everybody in the BBC television I said even venture the opening of what we hope will be a commended afternoon Saturday August 7th 1954 35,000 spectators filled Empire Stadium at home hundreds of thousands watched and listened as the Miracle Mile unfolded live from Vancouver Landy's 300 Hallberg is 548 million is 6:30 to Bannister is 329 that is definitely not an indication that those four men are the men to watch because the other four are fine competitors but those are the names that you have heard and read about for a long long time the call on your marks the officials are asking for quiet from the crowd we are away and running the question is today whether Bannister's tremendous finishing kick in the last quarter can offset the blistering pace that Landy likes to set that is Bailey of New Zealand who moved into the front land he is currently running fourth Bannister is behind him Bailey of New Zealand is still the number one man they are down the middle of the backstretch England represented by David law has both in front and Landy has made a move early that has got the crowd gasping just a little bit and wondering what kind of a pace he is going to slam set John Michael Andy of Australia unofficially the world record holder at 3:58 said insert to Finland is the number one man right now they give you quarter by quarter times paddy has a lead of at least five yards approximately 58 6 unofficially for the first quarter so the race develops now is Landy going to hold it all the way around a gif he does can he offsets fantasy's tremendous blackwater manager actually in a flow mile race one time fifty three and eight Tests seconds for the last lap a coatl final quarter the lead remains the same and mr. Bannister is not going to be our distance so far he is the number-two man Landy is holding it coming around the turn if anything it may have been Langston just a little bit Harvick is running third rich Ferguson of Canada is running fourth and they come down the stretch with a half mile mark Landy Bannister Ricky Ferguson of Canada in Wahlberg forth 1:58 unofficially for the first half mile and there is beginning to come from the crowd a roar of approval and encouragement with their particular favorites Landy and Bannister are now began to pull away from the rest of Mac but the gap remains almost the same between the virtual insanity Jessica liberal principle interior minister was as manager is during the closure Ferguson of Canada is third Wahlberg in fourth most men running a delays but the race is between the suit top men in the world at this moment the gap is has matter about four more strides and manager is beginning to make a movement Randy the Bell Labs affirm 2:58 seven in in no time one 3/4 landing still hanging on to the pub my opinion Roderich Ferguson Canada is a good third Harburg is dropping activist it is very definitely a two-man race the gap is about five feet no more dr. Roger Gilbert manager of England / John Michael Andy of Australia 1 - and rich Ferguson of Canada was third what else you think and so the race of the century lived up to its billing both runners broke the four-minute barrier it truly was a Miracle Mile your time 358 and a census fastest you've ever run river run that fast and competition before no that cross this time I've ever done you find a doctor that's running in competition you will get a faster time or a slower sign then yes on time trials Oh always always it's faster to run against an opponent um it ended in England is not easy to come across an opponent who can do a to tip the 257 340 miles John Landy did today was no doubt system my great respect for him as an athlete well the greatest on the days of smilers in the world made me bring the very most ask myself he's a very great runner the privilege for me to run in that race but I feel about this John do you feel that maybe you pace yourself a bit too quickly in the proceeding laps no I had no alternative I had nobody to help me I tried to run a lone-wolf race if I couldn't shake Roger off I had to lose and when I looked round on the final back straight and I saw with me well I knew it was curtains but I think that it is a very good race oh I have no excuse I couldn't beat him under the circumstances and he just out kicked me in that final 70 or 80 yards and that was all there was to it but very pleased that we both ride with a break for a minute the good clean race and it definitely went to the better man on the day of the race good describe there is to be put

If you haven't yet read "the perfect mile". It's my favorite book and it chronicles all the attempts and lives of Bannister, Landy, and Santee leading up to the eventual breaking of the 4 minute barrier.

It's always important to point out they're basically running in sand.
