this is called an atomic Force microscope and it operates a little differently than you might expect from a normal microscope this device makes an image by tapping on your sample with a very tiny probe tip usually only 20 or 30 nanometers wide but because it's so small it's really hard to describe how it works so I made a bigger model to demonstrate the principle an AFM has a resonating cantilever with a sharp tip on the end it will move this tip across the surface of your sample and anywhere it makes contact with your sample it'll record the height at that position by doing this you can construct a three-dimensional image of your sample my device is cobbled together out of a 3D print and some pretty amateur hour Electronics so it can only achieve millimeter level accuracy but real afms can give you nanometer or even picometer resolution although usually in a pretty small field of view smaller than a human hair despite that afms are super important to research and Material Science
