[Music] hey everyone Travis here lately I've been spending a lot of time with Blackmagic designs 810 mini switcher and its companion application the 8 M software control app today I wanted to discuss the difference between upstream and downstream key and also give you a tip on exporting graphics for use in the ATM software control app and more specifically premultiplied graphics now there's already a bunch of articles and videos on the web that are going to do a better job of explaining what a premultiplied graphic is than I ever could but a simple explanation of what it is is it's a pre masked graphic and we can create those right in Photoshop and over here in Photoshop I have a ripple training logo that already has transparency this is a PNG file and to create a premultiplied graphic I could do that using black layers and creating an alpha channel down here but there's an easier way and all you you need to do is with a file that has transparency navigate to the file menu and choose export and down here at the bottom we have an option ATM switch your media pool so Photoshop will actually let us export a file directly to the ATM software control so I'll choose that now and I get a window here where I tell Photoshop where I want my file to go now in order for this to work you need to be connected to your ATM over an Ethernet cable on your network so there's the IP form I am here I can name my graphic I'll leave it as it is and then here I have media pool location the ATM allows you to import up to 20 stills and graphics here I already have one in my slot one because I did this with another graphic before the video so I'll choose two and then here under colors we have pre multiply alpha and that's the whole thing that we've been discussing Photoshop is going to do the work for us so next we have after export we have do nothing or set to Media Player one I'm going to choose set to Media Player one and then I'll click export great now let's navigate to our ATM software troll app and here I'm in the media pool and you can see that graphic I was just working with is in my slot number two in the top left we have a one letting us know that it's in media player one now one note on that fact is the ATM mini only gives you one media player and what that means is you can only work with one steel or graphic at a time unfortunately so now we have our logo loaded up let's navigate to the switcher and here we can start to discuss what upstream and downstream keys are and before I get into that I also wanted to note that the output for my ATM mini is being recorded on an Atomos and if I go to my output menu you can see I have program selected so whatever program view is set to whatever's on air you'll be seeing in my atomos recording so now we need to set up our upstream key and to do that over in my palettes I'll open up the upstream key now upstream key you have several things to choose from you have luma chroma pattern and DV or digital video effects one no often times when we talk about keys everybody thinks of chroma key or green screen and key can also refer to you know graphics with transparency you're keying out part of that graphic to have transparency and we're gonna be working with the luma keyer here under fill' source and key source have my media player one selected if I go to media player you'll see that we have that still two selected back to my palettes and down here this is a section that we're really concerned with and now if I were to uncheck premultiplied these are the controls that you would use to get the transparency you need in your graphic if say you were just working with a regular PNG that had transparency but because we have a premultiplied graphic I'm gonna recheck premultiplied key and that's all we're gonna have to do now the upstream key the way that I enable that in my switching is going to be in this next transition area okay so right before we get started let's talk about our program and preview preview is what we'll be switching - program is what is currently on air so I'm actually going to in my preview select my color one and I'll show you if I click Auto we transition to a white background or a white color solid and if I transition back we transition back to camera 1 and that's what you're viewing right here might see 100 next let's talk about the next transition area next transition determines what will be included in the next switch so right now background is enabled and background refers to all of these options in program and preview these are our backgrounds and then next to that you'll notice we have key so if I enable key I've now told the ATM software control the next time I transition I want you to bring my upstream key on air so I'll do that now again we have color 1 selected in our preview and we'll be turning on our key so I'll click Auto and we transition off the camera to that white solid background and I've turned on my key my upstream key which is again mapped to that premultiplied graphic that we turned on now I also have the option to disable background and transition again and I'll just turn that graphic off I'll click Auto again that graphic comes back on I'll choose background and now we're gonna transition or switch our background or inputs and our key off air so I'll click Auto we come off of that graphic and then we're back to our input 1 so that's an upstream key upstream keys are tied to your main switching so if a stream or order of operations the upstream key will be upstream with all your main transitioning so now let's talk about a downstream key so to setup the downstream key I'll close my upstream key options and then in my media player I need to choose my other still that I had loaded earlier and that's my still 1 this is a ripple live logo on they have I'll navigate back to my palettes to my downstream key section and the downstream key is also a luma keyer just like we saw on the upstream key but in the downstream key you only have a luma keyer to work with and again this is a pre multiplied graphics we'll make sure that's checked and we're ready to go and to work with the downstream key you're going to use these controls here now the basic controls are auto that's just like your Auto transition button you will transition on the graphic and then on air it's not only an indicator if I were to click that button that would just flip on the graphic so now I'll just go ahead and click Auto and now you should see a ripple live logo in the bottom corner here and downstream keys are mainly used for like a bug or a lower third and the reason for that is they're meant to be more constant so with that said I'm going to change my preview to camera 2 which is actually coming from my iMac via an HDMI cable and then I'll go ahead and disable my key one in my next transition area because I don't want to work with that upstream key anymore and we're going my downstream key and so I'll go ahead and click Auto and we transition over to my iMac but you'll notice that lower third is still on it is happening downstream of my transitioning so it's happening after the fact it just stays on so then I can transition back and we still have that lower third in the bottom left corner and that's really the difference between an upstream and the downstream key where an upstream key is going to be included in your main transitions a downstream key is meant to be more of a constant element that happens over your main transitions or switching and I also wanted to mention guys that we just released a in-depth tutorial on the a2 mini you can find a link for that below and I hope you guys found this helpful please you know leave your feedback down in the comments if you had more to say about premultiplied graphics I'd love to hear about that in the comments as well and if you like this video please like and subscribe and we'll see you next time
