[Music] asus's new R zephrus g16 2024 gaming notebook is likely one of the best looking gaming notebooks I have used in what feels like forever not only is Asus going for sophistication with the model by incorporating a Sleek MacBook Pro like design but the notebook promises some rather impressive power at Paxon RTX 490 and an intile core Ultra 9 from the outside you'll never say this is a gaming notebook because it lacks all the fancy lights and RGB that you typically find instead we're welcome by a sleek and clean notebook that really boasts a premium theme if anything it is almost as if the RGB brand has suddenly grown up and this notebook is the adult businessman version of the teenage RGB ridden g16 we had back in 2023 I won't lie I'm here for it of course this Sleek new R zephrus g16 does mean the RX 490 alongside the entie ultra 9 are both cramped into a notebook that is only 1.7 CM thin so we have to take into account all the corners that have been cut to get here and how well the notebook performs under General cooling too for example the peak power output has been cut from 150 watts found in last year's larger gaming notebook down to 115 Watts but more on that later I can go on all day about how sexy this R zous g16 is as a massive fan of Apple's latest space gray 16-in MacBook Pro this g16 is giving me all that energy and more The Notebook features a gray CNC aluminium chassis Asus calls this color Eclipse gray this model is the 16in version and is 35 cm long by 24 cm wide it is only 1.72 CM thick it is metal all Across The Notebook including the bottom in the keyboard area and the top lid speaking of the top lid there's a fancy strip of LED lights that are sent across the left to the right hand side these LED lights are encased in a cool looking silver strip Asus calls this/ lighting you know because you can't just have a strip of lights on an Asus notebook without the brand coming up with a name for it it looks okay I Won't Say I'm a huge fan of it to be honest at times it looks messy and distracting there's one thing having a cool light on the outside that glows but these white LED lights flicker all the time and if someone was using this notebook in a coffee shop it would come across incredibly obnoxious there are various settings you can change you can also have different themes as well as different animations for each theme I prefer the theme called off regardless of how annoying the light strip is it does look cool in itself it adds a bit of flavor to the notebook's design while the slash lighting can only be white the inner keyboard which features a half-sized keyboard board features full RGB however it is not per key RGB instead it makes use of one lighting Zone I did notice the LED lighting looked a bit patchy here and there it isn't cleanly spread across the top of the notebook and you can notice some dim Keys compared to others it is a small issue but it's still an issue if you're spending money on this expensive notebook here you'll also find a large trackpad which takes up a huge chunk of the body you know me the bigger the track pad the happier am so this giant touch space is good to see it stretches from the bottom of the keyboard all the way to the bottom of the notebook and it is a real joy to see it is also made of glass which means it won't wear out and get glossy over time Rejoice there's also a power switch on the top and some quick access buttons including volume mute and an RG switch that launches the Armory crates the OLED display which I'll get into in a bit takes up the majority of the top bezel it is then met with a glossy black border the top bezel houses the webcam and the windows hello infrared sensors the rest of the notebook follows the same minimalist design on the bottom there are some clean vents a lot of them in fact the entire bottom of the notebook is one giant mesh of vents it makes sense given there are no vents on the sides or the back of this notebook as for the ports on the left you'll find a power port an HDMI 2.1 port a thunderbolt 4 and power delivery port a USB a 3.2 Gen 2 port and an audio Jack Combo on the right there's another USB type a 3.2 Gen 2 port a USBC port and a SD card reader I have very few complaints about the r zephrus g16 design there are no shortages of ports on this notebook at all it is incredibly lightweight at only 1.9 kgs and besides the distracting SL lighting it holds up quite well it is the kind of notebook that looks busy while also secretly gamer and I adored almost everything about the sophisticated device when it comes to the performance of the RG zis g16 a big Focus for me was on the RTX 490 because packing a GPU of this magnitude in such a small notebook has to come with some compromises the Nvidia RTX 490 pack 16 GB of gddr6 RAM and has a tgp of 115 Watts it runs at 95 Watts but it can be boosted by another 20 wat to reach 115 Watts it also has a boost clock of 240 MHz and again this can be overclocked by an additional 50 MHz the Intel Core Ultra 9 185h is also quite a capable CPU and it packs a clock speed of 2.3 GHz which can then be boosted up to 5.1 GHz the CPU has a TDP of 45 wat and a max power consumption of5 Watts I then ran some benchmarks across select games to see how well this RX 490 performed I enabled turbo mode in the Asus Armory crate at the same time to get the most juice out of the components too here are some of the results I got during my tests the unit was using a Max of 193 W of power it also got quite hot with the GPU maxing out at 87° the actual unit itself measured 93° C in its Hot Spot fans were blowing like nobody's business too trying to keep the unit cool which was also expected they reached the max of 54 DB which is loud and you'll struggle to muzzle the sound out I am a bit concerned about the surface heat on this notebook though after 30 minutes of tests I measured 63° on the back chassis and it was quite a scorcher this could no doubt burn your hands and skin and is definitely a safety hazard at this rate even if you innocently pick up this notebook to pack it away after gaming this will hurt your hands you can use the debate of no we don't touch the bottom but there are times that you might pick up the notebook or touch the Bottom by accident after playing games and it will definitely hurt your hands however the notebook did manage to cool down rapidly as soon as I exited my games in tests it dropped down to 49° Celsius within seconds and I could almost feel the surface cool down it was actually pretty impressive to feel the metal go from incredibly hot to super cool so yes it does get hot it is understandable given that the int core Ultra 9 is sometimes sitting at 95° and the GPU is sitting at another 87° but it still performs quite well and gets cool quite quickly the display on the r zephrus g16 is also a big deal the 16in 240 HZ 2560 x600 OLED is an absolute portable dream to play on the colors are vibin and it comes with all the OLED black levels you would expect I measured 420 NS of Max brightness on the display which is quite good good enough for HDR games and content the panel is also quite glossy but you're likely expecting that with OLED I also measured 0.9 milliseconds of screen response time and a 20 millisecond input latency which both are fantastic the r zephrus g16 also includes a 90 W perh battery and it lasts a long time I measured 14 hours of YouTube video play back General us will get you beyond that too while the 90 W per hour size is quite common these impressive battery tests come from a combination of Windows 11 battery saving and the entire core Ultra being quite battery efficient when it wants to be of course the ruro G zros g16 then packs six large speakers there are speakers at the bottom that face forward and speakers on both sides of the keyboard they sound pretty darn impressive for Notebook speakers the last of the Nvidia rx40 series cards has finally arrived and this Nvidia decides to make an RX 490 super which would be pretty these are likely the best speakers I've heard on a non- MacBook device ever they still sound like notebook speakers don't get me wrong but they have a good kick of base and are quite clear the notebook is also upgradeable to a certain degree the removable bottom plate revealed an extra m.2 slot there's no upgradeable RAM on this notebook at all the current 32 GB of RAM is built onto the logic board itself so you can't replace it or add more while we have the device open should also mention the cooling system you can see the two down firing fans which help shoot heat outwards from the bottom of the notebook this is why the bottom face plate is just one giant mesh of vents it makes sense Asus has built quite a robust cooling system on the r zepis g16 which includes liquid metal on some models the 16in 49t model includes this liquid metal alongside a vapor chamber and Asus a second generation Arc flow fans of course the test show this cooling system is quite a capable one The Notebook gets hot but it seldom suffers from any sort of thermal throttling the throttling I did experience came from more the CPU side than the GPU this intercore Ultra n was sitting close to 100° C during tests I did see a throttle at 97° C the real question I have to ask is whether or not the Slimmer g16 is worth the asking price while there are clearly a few upgrades here and there compared to last year's model the Slimmer notebook does come with some performance bottlenecks and limitations in comparison to the 2023 model mainly due to its Slimmer design and less power usage which results in some cooling hiccups and lower performance in games keep in mind that these hiccups aren't necessarily bad The Notebook is still incredibly powerful and the Artic 490 does perform fairly well but Asos has tried to defy the laws of physics here and for the most part the company didn't get away with it but that doesn't mean there isn't a sophisticated and Powerful notebook here so those are m thoughts on this year's R zis g16 are you looking to pick this notebook up let me know in the comments down below while you're
