today we are changing the front and rear shock absorbers on this 1997 rear wheel drive GMC Safari the van has been lifted and is being supported on jack stands the Jack we will need later on there's another Channel on YouTube called Revit Auto and he's already posted some good videos on how to change the front and rear shock absorbers the thing I didn't like is that he broke the stud in order to get this nut out he's also using a lift so an alternative method is to use a floor jack and the lyo 2400 tool basically this gray part is going to sit on top of the stud and then this black tool is going to go over that then you're going to use a 13 millimeter wrench to make sure this part doesn't move and then you're going to loosen this guy turning to the left real simple right the last part of getting the nut out is pretty tricky because when it's almost out it gets sandwiched in between the two tools so whenever you feel the slightest bit of resistance what you want to do is start pulling this up at the bottom of the lower control arm there's two bolts loosen them and then just slide the old shock absorber out for the new one put the washer and the bushing the washer is going to be facing up like a bowl like a plate and then you can just finesse your shock absorber in there there you go what I'd like to do first is thread the nut on the top stud and another top is secured his hand tightened finger tightened and then twist this the bottom piece until it is at an angle so this would be the incorrect angle because this is going to go up it's going to hit right here instead of right here that's the correct angle but then I like to use a jack and a block of wood to slightly push the shock absorber up and then you can get your threads in adjust it while the jack is there after some adjusting the bolts are in there slightly now we can lower the jack and turtles both down to 18 foot pounds easy right now do the other side here are four types of shock absorbers that are recommended if you want OEM quality go with the AC Delco pair part number 530 175 for the front 530 176 for the rear about 40 each if you want decent quality for a low price go with KYB xlg part number 344 081 for the front three four four zero eighty two for the rear about 25 each the KYB guests adjust is much smoother than the OEM kg 5458 for the front kg 5459 for the rear about 40 each last pair is the heavy duty KYB monomax monotube these are much stiffer than the OEM part number 56 50 49 for the front 56 50 50. for the rear about 60 dollars each I went with gases just for the front and xlg for the Rears for the rear I'm not even lifting the vehicle there's plenty of space for me to come in from the back for the driver's side you'll hold on to this boat with a 15 millimeter and you'll loosen the nut with an 18 millimeter you have plenty of room the spare tire does not get in the way using this angle that boat that goes into the frame slides in and out the hanger that is on the passenger side won't be a problem next remove the nut and bolt that is on the bottom you'll remove the 18 millimeter nut and slide out the 15 millimeter Bolt I recommend placing the Jack plate under the shock absorber it makes sliding out that bolt easier here I slid out that 15 millimeter bolt and lower the Jack but the shock absorber got stuck on the bracket as it expanded to get around this I use the pry bar and a dead blow hammer to free it from the bracket don't forget to include the parking brake bracket on the bottom of the passenger shock absorbers bracket to reinstall start by tightening the bolts at the top the xlg shocks were easy to compress by hand to line up the bottom both holes top and bottom nuts are torqued to 75 foot pounds and when you look at the horrible condition of the front shocks that were on the van incredible
