ASMR at the museum | Conserving a clown costume | V&A

so this is the white clown costume it had been stored part of a collection of a circus collector and x clown i believe first of all i will surface clean it i will use a soft brush and the nozzle of my low power vacuum museum back which is this machine here and i will gently try to pick up dust all over it but i'm not going to actually touch my object i'm going to brush the surface dust onto the nozzle as i move along the area so i'm going to test the power [Music] so [Music] basically the coloration of the sequence there is nothing i can do about it the cellulose nitrate where sequins were painted and during wear and with abrasion and over time they have lost their color [Music] we're going to look at the area under the arm where the um there's a lot of sweat staining because of the abrasion between the arm and the body this eye is very corroded so i'm going to try to clean that a little bit so i'm going to start with the soft rubber first so i am removing some of the corrosion you see the difference between the two sides it's a more abrasive rubber which is used um to remove corrosion products from metals but has to be used very gently and in stages of building up the clearing of their products very very slowly all right [Music] [Music] and these purple sequins have a kind of 40 deposits i'm going to try with a very lightly damp swap i'm going to try to see if i can lift that up a little bit clean them a little bit um yeah that's quite nice you can see the difference where my slope has been to the edge of the sequence where i haven't really i can rotate my sequence so away from the thread and i can do the area where the dirt and the yeah so that's quite quite good so i want them all to look like that okay so i'm going to have a look at this this is the cotton of the of the sequin which is being stained with the mold and i'm going to see if i can listen oh yes it is i know it's actually coming off that's really good it's best not to be too optimistic sometimes with the outcome of treatment so you're pleasantly surprised so that's really all gone which is which is very satisfying [Music] you
