(tranquil music) - Hi, I'm Anna and I'm here to speak with you about animals' death process and how they feel about this transition. When we have pets, we're faced sometimes with very difficult choices and decisions because we have the miracles of modern medicine that make it possible to treat diseases and prolong the lives of our loves ones. And we also can sometimes see how much pain and suffering they may be in. Throughout my consultation career, I've come to see that all non-human animals consistently regard physical death as simply a transition in a state of being, going from being alive in and with a body to existing and being alive without a body. They don't see it as an absolute end or finality point. So when it comes to sometimes very difficult decisions, it's great to be able to involve the animals in that themselves. They're not as attached as us humans to having to stay alive as long as possible at all costs. That said, there is the physiological and biological imperative to want to stay in body and to be well. And this is something we can consider. Let's make wellbeing - physical, mental and emotional wellness the filter through which we consider these end-of-life decisions, if there is a decision to be made. Euthanasia I find myself describing to animals as a possibility of getting assistance in leaving their bodies because that's practically what it is. Non-human animals do not judge euthanasia. They don't see it as a death injection with cruelty attached. And they may choose it or they may not choose it. Really, it's for us humans to examine what our role and our attachments might be in curating the animals' lives that we're blessed enough to share for some time as we walk alongside each other. So yes, being able to offer animals the opportunity to have assistance and relief from the pain or terminal illness is not something that they judge in a negative way at all. I also get asked whether it's a good idea to be with your animals at the time of them being put to sleep. The answer is that it depends. If you're going to be very, very distressed and emotionally expressing a lot of sadness in a way that might be disruptive to them and throw them off their centre, then rather don't be in the same room. They will still know your love and you may serve them better by holding space and feeling love in the form of a prayer or a blessing or being quiet while the vet goes about the business. But if you can manage to control your own feelings in the moment, and just be there with them at the time of their transition, that can be beautifully holding and comforting for them as well. So these are some considerations and I thank you for caring enough for your pets to consider how to be there for them in their last moments.
