prices haven't been this high since 2012 that is 10 years ago supply chain issues causing inflation are part of the problem but the bigger problem says aaa oregon is the russian invasion of ukraine foxos marilyn deutsch went out this morning scouting gas prices and reports from north portland most gas prices in oregon now are above four dollars but here at fessenden and columbia we found a shell station where regular is 6.29 a gallon paying that price today was jason roberts we asked him why he would pay that much did he know he could buy gas for a lot less i don't know i just stopped in because it's the closest place to my house so and i was about to run out so it was kind of an emergency we tried to find out why the price here at the saint john's shell was so much higher than elsewhere more than two dollars and 20 cents higher than oregon's current average of four dollars and eight cents a gallon sir can i ask you why gas prices are so high here over six dollars a gallon i just work here we reached out to shell oil they told us this shell branded operators are independent business people who make their own operating decisions and set gasoline prices as they believe appropriate while we do not have control of prices at independently owned shell branded stations we do encourage them to act responsibly when setting prices at the pump shell also says it takes allegations of price gouging seriously and will investigate sites with prices not in line with the market and we also reached out to shell management at the saint john's station we will let you know when we hear back in the meantime we talked to aaa oregon's marie dodds who told us she can't really say whether the alarmingly high price of gas at that north portland shell station is an example of price gouging every gas station can set their prices how they want to and there are as many business plans as there are gas stations from north to south and east to west today at every other place we checked prices were above four dollars but no higher on average prices are now at least a dollar more than they were one year ago analysts say it's mainly because the price of crude oil just skyrocketed dodd says the price of crude oil accounts for more than half of what it costs you to fill up your car or truck the big factor is we have a war in europe involving one of the world's largest oil producers the markets are very nervous about how long will this invasion last what will the outcome be will russia pull its oil from europe in response to harsh sanctions from the west it doesn't look like the prices are coming down anytime soon are we going to see five dollars a gallon gas you know a five dollar a gallon gas is always possible but i think we'll probably top out lower than that but again no one knows what the future holds if you do suspect price gouging you can report it to the oregon department of justice there are forms for you to do that and we have a link to them on our website kptv.com just go to the as seen on section in portland maryland deutsche fox 12 oregon
