hey i'm alex radcliffe from board game co and today we are covering eredia the paths we dare tread and we're going to be covering the campaign the overview game details stuff like that and of course you know pledge level should you back it all of that and so earlier past the paths we tread is going to be a game from far off games they are going to be most known for their prior game zia legends of a drift system which i always say zia legends of adrift although i believe the technically the technically correct pronunciation is ja legends of adrift i probably butchered that too but either way this is going to be a game from 2014 that is ranked 147 on board game geek and is an epic sandbox space faring adventure it's the game that did firefly better than firefly did firefly as you fly around the galaxy slight polyamino shipbuilding uh trying to do anything you want in the galaxy pick up and deliver attacking adventuring whatever it is you want in ja it is a game that is well lauded for a reason and that's going to be far off games claim to fame here when they're now bringing eredia the pathway tread to kickstarter and they've had kickstarters before they've done kickstarters for his job before this is going to be their newest game a game they've been working on supposedly for seven years now which is a long time to be working on a game but we'll see what is actually done with it so what is aradia the pathway tread and the high level overview is going to be going i'm going to dive down to different elements the kickstarter campaign page actually does a great job on their own plus there are videos from man vs meeple and the dice tower that i recommend both from jeremy howard and mark street both did fantastic jobs i'll throw links to that down below but the high level overview is this is going to be a legacy light game or campaign game driven system i believe they are using the term green legacy which basically meaning there's legacy ish elements to what's going on but you don't actually destroy any components so this game and its price point of 165 dollars as the entry level price point before shipping before anything else that is going to be giving you a game that you can reset so it's campaign it has elements where you are semi-permanently altering things although not actually permanently altering things you'll have a campaign log you'll make changes but it can all be reset so that you or someone else can dive back into the system because this game is going to be a high level adventuring rpg a little bit of everything system as you go through this this universe as you go through the high-level world exploration to then diving down into you know whatever landscape you're exploring to encountering and making choices around those landscapes to then diving into the actual exploration dungeon crawl aspect all while leveling up your character all while engaging in rpg elements which that sounds like a lot to go on well it is a lot to go on and so let's go ahead and dive down into it and they again do a great job guiding you through the campaign page so let's go ahead and dive through it so to begin with they have everything in this game is going to be pre-painted miniatures and especially when it comes to your character creation variable character creation you're going to match the the type of unit you have the ranger the warrior whatever with the face you want so you can see over here on this little gif as it's going through it you're literally going through a character customization screen which is fantastic i mean i don't think we've seen anything like that in board games nothing that i'm familiar with at least i think the closest thing i know of that's going to be somewhat akin is going to be oath sworn where they have those modular weapons being equipped on and off and even that's not really character creation so much as weapon adjustments to your character so i'm very intrigued by this system and like you see over here everything is going to be pre-painted miniatures from the the heroes from the monsters is going to be 60 plus miniatures all in this this system so you're going to go ahead and you create your system and then from there you're going to go ahead and explore the open world again we'll dive down into each of these a little closer but you're going to be going around a world map exploring different locations along the way you'll then go ahead and dive down a level to explore and discover those locations and then interact with the character with the landscape making choices around there experiencing events points of interest and then diving down a further level as you go through the dungeon crawl elements and start fighting monsters and doing all of that gathering loot leveling up all of that in this game so let's go ahead and scroll down a little further they have some of the paths over here so you have the paths of valor the hardy warriors you can have the path of shadow the formula stalkers use every available and advantage with no regard for honor honestly that sounds completely up my jam it's basically a rogue and i like rogues we're gonna have the path of light seek the light by pursuing healing casting all of that and the path of the wandering which is gonna be you know your typical ranger this is by the way a one to four player game you can absolutely play its true solo as a single character if you want so going back to that high level overview but drilling down into it a little bit more we have the world map where you'll be like i said going around traveling around the world map two locations diving down further into the locations to actually experience the interaction systems you might have you might find a house and then choose where to open a door and choose whether to go into the seller you're making choices rpg ask choices along the way choices that you can have other players read off to you or you can engage with it yourself because there will be two sided cards where you won't necessarily see the outcomes of the actions as you go through it once you get you dive down that level you'll explore the landscape here's where you can see an example of you know while in adventure mode you can enter caves open doors climb stairways all of that so they over here they're going to open the door they're going to go into the house into location they explore the cabin now they're heading into the basement of the cabin or whatever it is and now you go down the stairs discover the cellar and now you're engaged with wealthy baddies the enemies of this world because they have that multi-tier system like i said already the the world map then the interact interaction on the closer level location you're in and then finally the dungeon crawl aspect experiences of the game where now you have to face off against these these three rats these rabbit rats in the cellar that you're facing off which brings us to combat combination is going to be very focused around your armor your suits where where you have armor and equipment and gear on your character as well as you know the actual weapons you're using combined with dice roll combined with their weapon strike pattern you see the enemies you're fighting off against you can see it a bit over here let's see maybe you'll scroll down a little further if we scroll down you can see here's a good example you see this rat location this rat has three hit points on it we have this location this location and that weaker spot and then you have a weapon pattern and depending what you roll if you roll 20 plus you'll hit once if you will so if you roll two plus you'll hit once if you roll 11 plus you'll you'll hit two in that strike pattern and then if you hold 20 plus you'll hit three directional so you're gonna be able to be applying wounds to your enemies directionally and potentially crossing different critical points doing more damage potentially hitting them at trigger points that will trigger a response or reaction or some sort of engagement from there because there's different systems going on in this game you can see over here this triggers their threat over here when you hit its weak spot assuming you didn't kill it on the way because what's going on is they're going to be attacking back with different actions you're going to be rolling dice to determine where they attack and at which point on your suit on your body they attack you so you have this again this lots of stuff going on here but this combat system with all your equipment your right shoulder your helmet your legs all these different locations you have you're gonna have your own combo system you're engaging with in the game that you can generate and build combo combo you'll use to trigger different skills and abilities all while the enemies have their own threat building up in combat that that threat's going to be used to trigger the opponent's abilities so you're manipulating this board state over here you can see a good example over here where this character is going to use a taunt combo to pull the two rats closer to that character so he can then go ahead and perform a spin attack using his combo a spin attack making an attack against all enemies position taking out both rats one at a time so it's going to have that leveling up system and you are going to be leveling up it's going to have that let's say the comboing system as you engage in different aspects from the equipment you have from the enemies you're facing off from the positioning from the combo the taunt skills and abilities and you're going to have leveling up in order to augment all that all that to develop your character to develop how you're going to grow and increase throughout this game making all those choices that is a high level overview i mean high levels a bit of a stretch because we spent a decent amount of time in it but that is a general overview of our idea pathway tread if you want more information like i said already you can check out uh mark street you can check out jeremy howard the dice tower and man vs meeple both have excellent videos covering well everything i just talked about the skills the interactions the rpg elements to this game now before we go into pledge levels and all of that we're going to talk briefly about the the faq has a relevant question which is first of all is how replayable is our idea because that's going to be a big thing over here we have this world map you're exploring that you're going through congratulations well is it going to be different because the way those slots trigger together it doesn't necessarily look like they're different and it doesn't seem like it is because it seems like you're going to be going through this world map and the replayability is going to come from the fact that you will not engage in every single thing every single time you will not make the same choices when presented with a landscape or a character or a development as you go through it and additionally the different character paths you have both within the same character and the way you can develop them as well as choosing different characters so eredia is a con is a consistent world it's a world that is stuck in the same place and to a certain degree going through it a second time will mean that you have seen and experienced things that you saw the first time around does that mean it's not replayable that's going to be a question you have to determine for yourself in terms of weighing up the way you play games when you go through eridia with its roughly 40 hours of gameplay in that base game when you're done with it to begin with do you even care about replaying it or are you just asking from a sense of you feel like 165 dollars should be replayable even though you may never actually get there that's a you question you'll have to determine that for yourself but let's say you do go past that 40 hours is it something that you do want to replay question prior games you've had that have that same aspect where going through it a second time does give you a degree of knowing what's happened think of gloomhaven if you've ever played gloomhaven once if you go through scenario one and you go through scenario one again you are going to walk away with a better understanding of what monsters will spawn and how the scenario will play out does that make it less fun possibly it depends on who you are it might make it more fun it might make it less fun it might be or whatever you're gonna have to think through the games you played and the replayability once you know how something develops and how that affects your personal enjoyment in the game past that as far as pledge levels exclusive exclusivity words as far as pledge levels exclusivity and all of that so rd is going to have one pledge level and well two pledge levels and one exclusive and those are going to be we have the 165 dollar base pledge level that's 165 is your entry point into this rpg giant sprawling game it's a lot going on here but 165 is also a lot to ask additionally we have the 190 pleasure which is going to give you the epic hunt expansion let's go ahead and scroll down to that because that is going to be kickstarter exclusive additionally i mentioned everything over here is pre-painted and that's going to apply as well to the epic hunt expansion is going to be exclusive to this kickstarter or we should look through some of these because they're pretty but the epic expansion is going to be exclusive to this kickstarter to the point that even in subsequent kickstarters they will have a different paint scheme or color scheme so in some way shape or form even in subsequent kickstarters forget retail which is not going to retail the expansion not the base game uh that's going to have be different even then so you're guaranteed some degree of exclusivity even if we're just talking kickstarter to kickstarter so as far as components for this 165 game 240 msrp that's relevant we'll come back to that doing the should you back in aspect but we have you know your your pre-made player managers you have six bodies we have 12 heads mix and mingle and match as you see fit we have 300 map cards we have a 50 pre-painted monster miniatures there's gonna be all the monster miniatures which are pre-painted these ones are not going to be customizable or at least not from what we've seen we have 900 plus cars this is going to be your deck full of event cars of interactions of choices tons of things there we have travel cards npc cards threat cards 100 points of interest job cards a key cards monster cards the class class tuck boxes for the various characters 118 i almost had 180 18 player boards uh you have six character boards six equipment boards and six skill tree boards that's gonna be all the stuff you're laying out on the board to manage your character to manage the character growth to manage the development in this game because that's going to be a big part of the fun of building up and leveling up your character you have the dice the treasure chest tokens 100 loot tiles in this game that's gonna be all the various gear you can equip that's going to be the the gear system you have in this well rpg slash adventure game the punchboard tokens the world maps all this stuff over here and then the epic hunt expansion which is kickstarter exclusive the epic hunt is going to be giving you a small add-on with miniature expansion and they they're very clear about this this is extra content you do not need this content to enjoy and appreciate eradia pathway tread in fact you may never actually experience it you may go ahead and do what i sadly end up doing on a lot of things which is get all in and then they may not even utilize your all-in content that is something to be mindful of and aware of for myself i i i sometimes use my all in content other times i touch one or two expansions and other times the base game is more than enough every game is going to be different and yet despite wanting it all we don't always use it all so that's gonna be something to factor in but it is kickstarter exclusive if you want that if you get that it's going to include a pre-painted miniature 20 cards an alternate set of certain skills available from the start of the campaign so more variability which is excellent and important if you're diving back in less important if you're going to play this for 10 hours 20 hours and never even finish a full play let it let alone going back for play number two or three so oh shipping first shipping and then should you back it shipping is going to be 45 freight plus last mile is going to be 45 dollars for continental u.s and it's subsidy it's being subsidized by them to a certain degree so the way they're doing their discounts is they're doing a 75 discount on msrp so that 240 msrp being discounted down to 165 an additional a far off subsidy on shipping costs as well so they're giving you a subsidy and shipping cost as well as that msrp discount which again i don't really care about terms and terminology all i care about is practically speaking what are we talking about price point wise retail wise exclusivity is it something you should be backing is it worth it or wait till retail or wait the secondhand market those are the questions on the table and to that end i'm not confident here but that's not true i'm fairly confident here i'm fairly confident on the value of erida pathway treads whether you should or shouldn't get it but i'm not get there's no guarantees here because this is very different this is a very very different beast than many of the typical things i cover some games are fallen to a standard pattern they're they're the next you know come on or mythic or awaken realms kickstarter we know how the market will treat them we know how the second remark will treat them we know the retail availability we know the price points all those things to a certain extent become fairly standard our idea the pathway tread is certainly not it's 165 dollar price point is the entry level to this game that's a lot of money and in fact this is worth noting this is one of the first times i'm doing a should you back it dedicated campaign video to a game that hasn't even funded yet our idea the past we tread as a time of this filming is six hundred and ten thousand dollars on a seven hundred and twenty thousand dollar goal when this video goes up tomorrow morning it is entirely possible that we'll have crossed that but i don't think we will have yet i think it's probably going to be later in the day today when we cross that number although we will cross that number this game a 720 000 goal is admirable i mean the last time i saw something like that it was going to be back when when conan when mcmahon tried doing this with their conan game they talked about realistic realistic uh goals in terms of kickstarters and how they're gonna have a seventy thousand dollar goal and they didn't hit it because you have what we see here right now six hundred thousand dollars that's a it's an astounding amount of money and yet it's not even the full goal for our idea the paths we tread and this isn't one of those kickstarters where they're going to have stretch goals or daily unlocks daily reveals left right and center they're delivering you a product they're showcasing the product and that is what you're going to get and the closest example i can think of when i'm thinking of eridia and how it will handle and retail in the second hand market and all of that is going to be eclipse second dawn for the galaxy eclipse second half of the galaxy which was a 99 kickstarter this is a long time ago by the way and this is before we had all these freight increases and and also the everything going on in eridia but eclipse at 99 dollars is a game that you don't see it for 99 on retail you see it for 160 to 200 dollars something's even more in retail that kickstarter was the best price point you could possibly get to get in on second on for the galaxy and i think rd is going to fall into a similar vein that 240 msrp if you break it down you have the 240 msrp but broken down to 175 165 but really is 240 msrp to 185 once you factor in the shipping cost because the shipping cost does have to be factored in now that's not a bad price by the way when you factor in typical margins in retail even with a 240 msrp if it does go to retail that might mean that even with shipping included you're getting an okay deal it might be okay it might be slightly better than okay it does range msrp discounts can range between you know 10 to 25 percent and this would be closer to 25 once you factor in the shipping so i think at the lowest base point i think eredia is going to be a decent pledge level option now you'll be getting it sooner than anyone else and i do not think it's going to have a wide retail availability that 240 msrp price point means that the stores that do carry it are going to be few and far between this is not going to be massively available it's just it's just too expensive if that msrp has anything is remotely close to accurate it's too expensive i think eridia is a safe back but all things considered i do not think it's a guaranteed safe back but i think it is a safe back that hundred and sixty five dollars plus shipping 185 dollars it is a lot of money for a game it's going to be akin to primal which had a 200 entry point and people lost their minds over that and was we're going to have the same problem here you have to be someone who's willing to sell out a lot of money on the promise of an epic adventure now i think this game is going to be good from everything we're seeing from the people we've played it and it's going the copies are being spread around to more contributors i believe undead viking is getting another cut as getting one of the copies i believe one stop corps shop is getting a copy i think there are only two copies currently in circulation and they are moving around and we're going to see more opinions but i know from jeremy howard and from mark street that they both did preview videos so their opinions are limited but if you look at their posts on social media they are both obsessed with this game i mean they keep that they keep the opinion parts out of the preview videos because it's a preview video but they're post they seem to be into this game they seem to be enjoying this game and that's a big deal and this is coming from far off games designer of ja and i think that a game they've been working on for this long with that kind of pedigree behind them combined with the reviewers opinion means i think we're looking at a good game if you are looking for an rpg adventure game that's going to have elements of rpg elements of adventure elements of dungeon crawl elements of character building a lot of different things which might make this game overwhelming it might make it not for you or it might perfectly combine into an experience you're looking for i think eridia is going to do just fine on the second-hand market i think this is going to be a game that people are going to be selling for well over what they paid for it when it initially lands and before we see that retail availability and then even once the retail availability hits i think we'll see it between print runs left right and center at the beginning and then as things stabilize maybe as things stabilize then the base pledge of rdf plus shipping versus the retail price then it will be equitable the rest of the time and in between print runs this will be your best opportunity to have got in the game and that's before we talk about that extra you know the the epic hunt expansion which which with its kickstarter exclusivity ignoring for a second the fact that you you and many others will never actually need that additional content there will be many people who want that additional exclusive content to a game that i assume a large amount of people will be really really enjoying in eridia the paths we tread that's basically it that is everything for early in the past we tried overall a an epic an epic game ambitious by nature and one that i think if you're interested in it it's a lot of money to cough up it's a lot of money so be certain you want this game it's a lot of money there's a lot of other things you can spend that money on there's a lot of other games you can get a good starting collection for 185 dollars including the shipping and whatnot but if you have decided you want this game then i don't think it's a bad back until next time i'm alex radcliffe from board game co i hope you enjoyed this video and as always have a good one
