Are SQUARE Subwoofers Any Good? | Kicker Loaded VL7R Review

what is going on youtube it is parker here bringing y'all another base head video does a square sub actually make a difference or is it just pretty much the same as a round sub or does it not sound as good being square we're gonna find out now y'all i am filming this on christmas eve now to be honest i really rather be inside just relaxing but i needed to get another video out for y'all and the grind doesn't stop so if you all appreciate the youtube grind i got going on here guys please smash that like button really helps out more than you all know all right guys let's get into it we have a square sub over here from kicker first time looking at a square sub on the channel so we're gonna kind of take a look at this guy see what we got and then run all the normal tests on it and see how it does this is the vl7r 10 inch sub so i've got the little spec sheet over here sensitivity is 88.8 db rms power is 500 watts frequency response 25 to 100 hertz then it gives some specs for the enclosure as well now what i love about these kicker setups is that they come with an awesome box that is uh engineered to go with this specific sub that means you don't gotta go build yourself a custom box you don't gotta figure out what box is gonna work best for this sub they already have that all figured out here so that's what i love about these kicker setups let's see what we got over here on this little tag of course this says it's a high efficiency vented enclosure extra thick mdf construction with advanced internal bracing easy to wire installation the impedance is two ohms and the max recommended power is 500 watts rms okay now i'm thinking this would make a great great giveaway sub guys let me know in the comments if you would like to see this for a giveaway on the channel christmas got a lot going on over here guys but we are making it happen well let's get a look at this thing y'all the carpet on this thing is done really really well they do an excellent job with these it's all tucked in all the seams again just such a clean looking setup love the logo i love the red stitching we of course have the little bumps around here just to help with the excursion of this thing let's take a look at what we got going on inside here of course here is the sub now they've soldered all their wires together very very nice there got these only thick wire here looks to be 12 or 14 gauge it's all wrapped up very nicely even if it is 14 gauge that is plenty for a 500 watt rms sub you can of course see those tinsel leads and that spider again everything kicker does guys they really put a lot of work into making sure it is done right and that is just going to last again little things like just soldering all the wires you know taping up stuff just making sure everything is secure they also they do have inserts so you just have machine screws going into them that's very cool got a ton of polyfill in there hey guys overall nice looking setup all right guys first square sub on the channel hooked up and ready to go let's see how she does [Music] foreign [Music] my channel hmm [Music] so [Music] okay guys well who would have known but it sounds just like any other subwoofer and of course this is just a 10 inch sub so we're not getting any crazy crazy just windiness or just loudness in this car but it does sound really clean and it does get you know decently loud if i was just driving around every day bumping honestly this wouldn't be that bad my car is quite large if you have a little small car you need something that's not going to get much space to throw in your trunk or something i think this little guy would have you covered it does do really really well for what it is now overall quality seems pretty good for that normal bass music that your normal person is playing from spotify or something like that if you are listening to decaf music some of the really lows did have some mechanical noise to them that could have to do with my cabin you know who knows but again this sub isn't meant to be a low crusher sub necessarily it's meant for that everyday person that's wanting a really solid system that's just going to last them a while and again it's going to be great for that normal music you're listening to on spotify or apple music or pandora or one of those things so let's do the rms test of course 500 watts rms playing a full song through that just to see if this guy makes it through that or not we'll find out this is the smd a mm1 this will tell me the real-time power go into this guy let's go ahead and make sure it's reset and let's play a song and see how it does [Music] okay now i went to go do the db test and my meter was going crazy my meter is messing up hardcore it's just going crazy over here guys don't know what the heck is wrong with it kept reading all kinds of crazy numbers was with nothing going on it kept building up to like 50 something db so don't know what's going on with that meter it could because it's absolutely freezing in here i don't know but anyway it doesn't really matter we weren't going to get a crazy crazy score out of these guys anyway because it is just a 10 inch sub in a pretty small box and this car is absolutely huge so somebody buying the sub is definitely not going for spl necessarily so it's what it is but let's throw a couple of 40 hertz test tones through it though just so we can see how much power this little guy can take in a burst okay we'll start out on some low power let's see what this guy does that was 83 watts 200 watts 430 watts 652 watts 800 watts 300 watts 2 000 watts max it out pretty bad there that was 2800 watts yep that is kind of going to the max that we're gonna get there but that was 2700 watts well guys in a burst this little fella took over five times its rated power and uh did fine didn't have any issues no spiders tore nothing blue so pretty cool there oh guys cool having a square sub on the channel overall opinion really sounds just like in the other sub a sound wave does not necessarily need a round driver to produce a good sound wave just not how it works kicker has made several videos going over that that i've seen before and the nice thing with having a square sub is you do technically get more surface area with it being square as opposed to rounds so that could help some maybe sometime i'll do a head to head with a square versus a very similar circular sub just so we can see which one is really louder let me know in the comments if you'd like me to do that here at some point all right guys if you are looking for a really really clean setup that's going to look good that's probably going to last you years and years and years and that you know it's just going to sound good it's going to have a box that's really meant exactly for this sub this is a great great option to go with now if you're wanting something that's going to get super duper low probably want to go to something else and or if you're going for sbl or if you have time to build a custom box or you have time to do the research and the buying a box that's going to really go well with the particular sub that you want you know that's that's a great way to go guys you might even be able to save some money going that route but again this is more for that person that wants something they can throw in looks good it's going to
