everyone thanks for watching school the American rifle today's video I'm going to show you how to replace or remove your rear takedown pin on your ar-15 lower now this is a easy process if you have a thick stock like an a.1 or an a21 those you simply remove the screw from the fixed receiver extension or buffer tube and you slide the stock off and then your detent assembly will be loose and you can just take that out and remove the rear takedown pin but when you're dealing with a collapsible stock receiver extension or buffer tube you have the buffer tube or receiver extension you have the castle nut and your rear end plate your rear in plate if it's installed properly should be staked and if you don't want to remove the staking that you've done if you've done it right then you don't want to have to take this assembly off to change this piece out now you may have damaged this piece maybe it's rusted maybe you want to put something that's lighter in there like titanium pins to make your gun a little bit lighter whatever the reason you want to put something that's more flashy if you have to get this for a takedown pin out it's called for in the military manual so I'm gonna bring the tool over the book this is the army TM 1005 3 1923 MP manual people just go up to 23 MP manual but this is a technical manual for the m16 I'm sixteen a2im 1683 a four and the m4 carbine also the m4a1 so pretty much every variant of the AR in the book there is a section where they talk about fabricating tools in the book they talk about fabricating a tool to remove the rear takedown pin and they fabricated it from a 1/16 inch socket head screw key 1/16 allen wrench is actually an nsnumber for it but all the dimensions are shown basically how you're gonna modify it if you don't want to modify one you can buy one of these tools from Brownells they sell this in Brownells they cost about five dollars here is the tool and basically it's just round right there on the edge so it comes to a point I'll show you how that point works I wanna set the book off to the side you can find that manual all over the place on the internet so if you want to read some technical information about the AR or m16 or m4 the book is fantastic but it's made for military armors mm-hmm now there are different ways you can try to take this out some people will attempt to use a jeweler's screwdriver and what they'll try to do is you're gonna go into this groove here that's how this pin is held in its capture so it will come out so they'll try to go into the groove and push the detent assembly back into the rear of the lower receiver so they can remove this pin and the problem is is even if you can get it to clear whether using this or maybe an exacto knife with a point you really can't push this out of the way and rotate the pin cleanly without causing some kind of damage normally you'll slip and you'll scratch the lower something bad so I don't like to use these but if if you have experience with it go ahead and go for it but what I like to use is the fabricated tool or the one you can purchase from Brownells the way you use the tool it's pretty simple you'll lay the tool into the groove that's cut for the detent and you will push in and that blade or angle disengages the detent assembly you can then rotate it and pull it out and there's the T tent right there and kicked out of the way all right so we have our rear takedown pin removed let's say we want to replace it if you're gonna replace it you should have something to replace it with and this is what you're gonna do to replace the pin you have to be able to push that back into the hole it's pretty hard to do if you're just trying to use some kind of tool to push it out of the way it's gonna slide all over the place you're gonna scratch the foot more than likely you can try to use needle nose pliers and pull that back but again trying to get all the way back in the end those pliers very difficult to do so what I advise people to do is to take the old pin that they took out and this is a warm pin let's say I wanted to put this is the one that I pulled out we're gonna put it in the other side of the lower and we're gonna push it up against the d-10 assembly now what we're going to do is use that blade and we're gonna push on this while we're pushing on this detent we're trying to put a little bit of pressure on this so it has some resistance so we're gonna push this back a little bit you can see that it's not moving again that's because I'm using the other takedown pin as resistance and then I can switch around if I want you to get a better bite on it see I'm still pushing it back pushing it back and you can get it almost all the way I don't want to push it all the way through now I can take my other pin you can see that it's retaining it I'm gonna take my other pin it doesn't matter how I put this in but I'm gonna keep tension like I'm trying to force these two pins together I'm gonna push it in my other pin falls out and then you simply rotate this pin click back on the clock so that's how you replace your rear takedown pin assembly without disassembling the lower receiver I hope you found this video of educational and thanks for watching
