[Music] good afternoon welcome to APN national news I'm CH NK and I'm happy to be your new host for our midday newscast we begin in Winnipeg where the indigenous identity front Summit is now on its second and final day it's a gathering for indigenous leaders to talk about how false indigenous identi ities have been impacting their communities and what can be done to change it ABN Sav jonza has more a video highlighting Infamous pretendian greets you just before entering the indigenous identity fraud Summit in Winnipeg names like Buffy St Marie gray owl and Joseph boen bring light to how many generations the issue spans and the level of prestige they were granted while living a lie cuz these people are after our rights they're after our resources and they're after uh a opportunity to take from us what we have suffered and waited for so long to get to co-hosted by both the Manitoba mate Federation and the chiefs of Ontario the rampant issue of People pretending to be indigenous brought together some First Nations in unit and Main te leaders from across the country to the closed two-day event in Winnipeg migma lawyer Pam Pomer spoke about how widespread the issue is we have hundreds of cases in the maritimes where they just they're like do you ever watch Jurassic Park and the Raptors keep testing the fences to see where the weakness is um yeah and one eventually gets out or a few of them well that's what pretendian are doing she says individuals and groups claiming one first nation's ancestor from hundreds of years ago does not make someone indigenous today do you have a relationship with a grave from 400 years ago or do you have a relationship with a community a nation a an extended family of kin and I think that makes the difference and it's not just individual cases of politicians and celebrities looking for clout Manitoba mate Federation president David chartran says it's Nations and organizations wrongfully claiming land hunting rights and financial resources in the Modern Age you look in this country there's no Nation indigenous nation in Canada that has not bled for their rights have not suffered for their rights have not actually fought vigorously for the rights and have a culture and history to protect there is no First Nation no R that's not gone through that people should simply ask the question to the Ontario Bill 53 legislation citizens tell us your history where did you bleed where did you went to war where did you die where did you suffer what did you go through to go what we've gone through to get where we are to protect ourselves there was a large focus on the controversial Bill c53 one that would recognize and give a effect to treaties of certain mate governments various First Nations leaders in the MMF have contested the inclusion of the mate nation of Ontario or M in the bill who they say have a faulty citizenship process and claims areas not historic to the mate Nation suffice it to say the M was not invited to The Summit in a press release they say in part this exclusion undermines the potential for a comprehensive and inclusive discussion on this critical issue affecting all indigenous communities in Canada Sav jonesa ABN National News Winnipeg thank you Sav a graphic novel that's currently on a University Bookstore Shelf has outraged the Manitoba mate Federation as well the mate National Council says the novel is cultural appropriation but a Halifax area University Professor disputes that characterization Angel Moore reports on the sh of this University Bookstore in Halifax is this graphic novel called rocking Spurs the anti-bullying tour the book is about colani Simone an Inu artist from Northern Quebec it tells the story of how Simone fights bullying on social media especially because she identifies as mate te from Eastern Canada as she explains to her friend in the novel they claim that anyone identifying as Eastern mate te is a race shifter and doing it for benefit tax evasion and money the novel was unveiled during this event at D Housey University back in March it was the brainchild of History Professor Lisa Bley Bley says the project encouraged her students to discuss bullying and identity was we were discussing these ideas of uh mess or mixedness that are sort of uh prevalent in the media these days and a lot of the misunderstandings um and I wanted to give students a class that uh you know really considered some of these ideas um because you know we're hearing the word pretendian we're hearing that you know they the Easter mate are a myth Cassidy Kon is a president of the mate National Council she disagrees and says there's no such thing as Eastern mate te communities our communities come from the historic Northwest there is no such thing as a matey Inu Community um and we stand firm against uh this fight against the the Eastern matey so our our reaction is strong um we we don't support the book we don't support the work that the mate nation of Canada is doing and and we will never condone this rocking Spurs was a result of binkley's class called matey history and culture and the book does give a history lesson from the emergence of matey people in Canada from the mid 1600s in the East the migrations through Quebec and Ontario and the rise of the western mate in the 1800s David chartran is the president of the Manitoba mate Federation he says this description of matey history is false uh to to state that the matey of the Red River migrated from Eastern Canada from Nova Scotia that we migrated over there and we found our way in the Prairies is absolutely absurd it's insulting it's damaging uh and it it truly will hurt a lot of people to during the book's March unveiling Bly claimed copies of rocking Spurs will be given to high school libraries across Canada we'd like to also thank the Canadian race relations Foundation that generously supported its publication we were able to hire professional artist and print out, 1500 copies that are going to be they're being delivered as we speak to all Canadian uh high schools for their Library [Applause] however Kuran wants all the copies of rocking Spurs recalled it should be our matey governments who are telling these stories it should not be these false uh indigenous uh bodies who who claim to represent matey continue to spread this misinformation so we will be taking action and reaching out to the school boards that have accepted these books the Toronto Catholic School Board District confirmed to APN news rocking Spurs was received received and is currently under review by the indigenous education department and the Toronto District School Board did not reply by the time the story went to air as well Del Housey University declined to comment on this story chartran says that is problematic but this also draws the the question to dely how serious is your pro procurement policy on on the on the promise of assuring us as indigenous leaders indigenous Nations as the r at of the West how how how uh secure is your policies to ensure that you're not allowing this to happen again Binkley however defends the message in the book I I think students need to learn how to talk about it and they need to know how to understand the politics that are going on between the various mate Nations and those that are self-identifying as Eastern mate te or mate te when they're not uh part of one of the recognized groups in Canada Angel Moore APN national news juk also known as Halifax Manitoba RCMP is continuing their investigation this week after a death of a teen girl it happened in the chamama win Cree Nation in Manitoba 450 km north of Winnipeg on Monday at 1:25 a.m. RCMP were called to a nursing station in chawin where a 14-year-old girl was suffering suffering from serious injuries she was pronounced dead when officers arrived on scene and RCMP determined her death was a homicide later in the morning a 19-year-old male Kingsley Laos was charged with second-degree murder and failing to comply with a release order wildfires in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories has caused major Internet outages for several communities during this past weekend despite the Yukon being so far away from the fires that territory lost its internet service for a full 24 hours now leadership is thinking what can be done to better protect its important infrastructure APN Sarah Connors has more for days raging wildfires near the communities of Fort Nelson BC and fort leard in the nwt have caused concern and anxiety for many on Friday evening the fires burn through two fiber lines in Fort Nelson in Southwestern nwt causing internet and phone outages across the north including the Yukon the territory's outage lasted about 24 hours and was restored Saturday evening a perfect storm of situations happened for this major of an outage in Northern Canada telecommunications operator Northwest H says it has geographically diverse fiber routes that come out of Northern Canada but both were impacted within a few hours of each other if they would have happened like a day apart or several more hours apart we wouldn't have been in the situation we were our whole society is dependent on on technology right uh these uh in in in in in these times the chief of the Kwan Lindon First Nation and white hores staff and Community safety officers went door-to-door checking on citizens while no major issues arose from the outage he's not eliminating the possibility other emergencies may arise this summer he says the effects of climate change have created a new reality for Northern Communities and it's time to be proactive how we prepare and respond and adapt to these to these Changing Times you know because we will see further changes and we will see further emergencies affecting people Northwest H says another outage like this weekends is unlikely to happen but Yukon government emergency coordination Center says it's important to be prepared in case another outage or emergency happens in the future CU those wildfires still are burning around Highway 97 um and and up in the nwt so it you know it's certainly within the realm of possibility Sarah Connors APN national news White Horse when we return the Woodland cre first nation is gaining more support after a peaceful blockade was put up in its territory we'll be right back [Music] welcome back to Alberta now where at least 14 other First Nations are showing their support for Woodland cre First Nation including some non-indigenous Industries talks between the first nation and obsidian energy seem to have fell through after a recent Monday meeting at a hotel in Peace River Woodland cre First Nation Chief Isaac labuan aam and his Council along with obsidian energy president and CEO Steven Lucas were both seen walking out during their very brief meeting on Monday in this video from reporter Brandy Moren with Ricochet media a councilman said there was no intent on an obsidian obsidian Energy's part to negotiate in another video obsidian CEO walked out the back door only saying Rangers in six it's been more than a week since the Woodland cre First Nation set up a traditional camp and blockade on an access road used by obsidian energy to one of its oil well sites Woodland pre leadership wants obsidian energy to come to the negotiating table they want a fair share of the profits that obsidian is making from drilling on their traditional territory a court injunction was issued against Woodland cre last week however Chief labuan aam placed it in the fire pit so far RCMP has chosen not to enforce the injunction in a statement sent to APN news the obsidian Energy company said the Woodland cre first nation's leadership has been providing what it calls misleading statements about blockades at two of its sites and the breach of a court order obsidian energy CEO Steven Lucas added the Woodland cre first nation is attempting to coarse us into providing payments to them that are similar to production royalties even though we already pay royalties to the Alberta Government for production on these Crown lands they also want to act as an exclusive agent for services used by the company and charge excessive amount for service contracts these are now reasonable these are not reasonable terms for a resolution to the blockade end of quote APN news will continue to bring you more updates on this story the Saskatchewan book awards announced their winners this week an indigenous Talent swept the competition a mate organization and a matey author took home four Awards collectively reporter Rachel may sat down with the winners repatriating these items is an AC of reconciliation because uh it's um recognizing our grandmother's hands repatriating mate te material Arts by Gregory scoffield the book focuses on bringing matey artwork back to where it originates and having it correctly attributed to matey very generic term the Gabriel Dumont Institute won two Saskatchewan book awards the publishing and education award and the indigenous people's publishing award author John Brady McDonald also received two Saskatchewan book awards best non-fiction and the indigenous people's writing award for his book carrying it Forward he says the book is a series of essays about his experiences growing up and
