appliedVR patient stories: Helping a chronic pain patient regain hope

[Music] my name is val bascardi and i live out on the eastern end of long island in new york i was diagnosed with chronic daily migraines and trigeminal neuralgia for when i was a child i had a mild traumatic brain injury and then about 10 years ago i was diagnosed with fibromyalgia i was a commissioner for housing and human services for a local government here so i was in the helping people business i couldn't do it anymore so i retired early this one is my depiction of fibromyalgia feels like needles in your skin and your muscles feel on fire yeah that's it that's pain manifest itself throughout your body throughout your central nervous system and that you feel like your central nervous system is on fire well since i'm a long-term chronic pain sufferer i've tried many things from massage to acupuncture to medical intuitives to live red blood cell analysis i've had surgeries i've had tmj surgeries i've done so many things that there was literally nothing left to do but to learn how to live with it sound first oh there we go i see a big crystal and now you have to breathe to get the crystal to change colors she just said excellent pace only you're breathing too quickly oh this is like a nighttime campfire it's like it's like magic it really is it's very cool what it does is you can totally disengage from from saying to yourself all the time about how much pain you're in and you totally immerse yourself into something different during the day when my pain would uptick i would remember the visuals from the applied vr software and i would be applying them to my breathing without even using it i felt that i was a little kid again at the beach when you wake up every day in pain you change your entire life to try and manage it you ask your loved ones to change their lives to help you manage it and it's not easy the applied vr made me feel hopeful you
