Good criticisms tbh. IPP is just overpowered and overpriced for its software. If they were to offer the 2018 version but with miniLED, it would probably sell more since they’re way cheaper without the M1, additional ram, cameras, etc.
This gets down to one of my frustrations with mobile devices in general. The $2,199 model could literally replace my desktop workstation, one that's admittedly old, but the specs are close, if not better, than my desktop machine with the exception of graphics. Slap a monitor, keyboard, and mouse on it and I don't have a need for a separate laptop for when I need to be on the road. The only problem: it's an iPad, not a Mac. Yes, I can get a comparable MacBook Pro, but it can't convert into a tablet. Give me an Apple Surface and I'd only need the one device.
If you actually listen to what Linus says in this review, he basically says that this is the finest piece of hardware for tablet on the market, with the best SOC and best screen you can buy. Yet it is held back by apples software
Which I personally think is a very reasonable and justifiable conclusion that I personally agree with
It was a pretty obvious review and echoes what people have said for a while.
If the iPad works for someone as a computer, let alone a professional computer? Cool, glad it works for you. But for lots of others it is just straight up not a computer replacement or alternative. And to me personally, the people who use it like that (outside of maybe artists who need a good stylus) are trying too hard to live in the ecosystem and be on the cutting edge. So much so that they’re using a less efficient tool for the job.
But most of the things the people unsatisfied with iPadOS want will never happen. Because what they want is essentially a desktop OS with all the freedoms, flexibility, complexity and risk that entails.
It took me a while but I made my peace with that. The iPad Pro 10.5” I bought will be the last high end iPad I get. I’m just waiting for a base iPad with a laminated screen or a good deal on a used Air. Because for me, the iPad is only good as a bedroom or patio web browser and ebook reader.
It’s dang annoying that photoshop is bothering to remake its ui for the iPad. Now that we have m1 on both desk and tablet, just port PS over. Clip Studio did it with small buttons and it’s great it works perfectly.
Affinity has small unintuitive menu options on the iPad, we can handle a typical Adobe UI.
That video is pretty on point.
The top of the line iPad Pro is really in a weird place: best hardware in Apple land for a really high price but can do much less than the bottom end MacBook Air which costs half (and which I personally absolutely love).
I would just love to have a M1 machine with a proper operating system, the pencil, the screen and the new front facing camera.
I think the YouTube reviews would be even less favorable if the machine wasn’t good at video editing which is something that youtubers but few other care about.
As an owner of the 2018 model, I'm content with iPadOS 15. They implemented title bar buttons, expanded the right click menu, Quick Note is such an underrated feature (instead I've been using TextEdit on my Mac since forever), center window seems pretty cool but I haven't been able to get it to work, and I like the idea of the shelf.
But that's as a 2018 iPad Pro owner. Linus is spot-on. If I was an owner of the new $2,000+ 16GB iPad Pro... I'd be angry. Why put an M1 and finally publicly address the RAM configurations if it's still just an iPad?

I legit loled at Riley doing the Tim Apple bit
20billion dollars in R&D?! Dang that’s a real compelling case to make for something not being here is a conscious choice on apple’s part.
