humility humility bible studies taking from 1st peter chapter 5 verses 5 and 6. luke 14 7 to 11 and then proverbs 29 23. you are somebody to read hospital chapter 5 5-6 5-6 quickly let's be fast introduction very short one yes [Music] [Music] thank you very much that is this short introduction you know this lesson today humility is coming under the umbrella of christian maturity christian maturity [Music] so the series of lessons here will be dealing with things that has to do with christian maturity when one becomes a christian how do you mature how do you grow so because this is the first lesson in the in this series in this unit under this unit we are going to read the theme thoughts so somebody please read the theme thoughts for us that have idea of what we are going to be going through in this quarter yes thank you [Music] and [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] thank you very much so we can see that there are a lot of things here as christians that peter is advising us to add to our lives to add to our lives we need to add one thing to the other [Music] add to your faith virtue and virtue knowledge and to knowledge temperance and to temperance patience and to patience godliness and to godless brotherly kindness and to brotherly kindness charity so all these things are the things we are going to be going through in this quarter and even though humility is not mentioned there but we know it's one of the christian virtues that we need to have so we are starting with humility in this quarter and if i may ask what is humility what is humility yes yes yes whether you want to define it or you want to give us some words that also are related to humility yes nobody is making an attempt okay by dictionary definition he says humility is the quality of having a mood dust or low view of one's importance the quality of having a modest or low view of one's importance in other words you are looking into yourself and you are not rating yourself higher than what it should be you are not convincing yourself to be high up there while all others are below here but when you have humility you want to have a modest view of yourself a low view of yourself okay we will see more of that as we go on in this lesson and then for somebody the attributes attributes that are expected from somebody who is humble okay for somebody who's humble we expect that that person [Music] will acknowledge that they don't have it all when you are humble you will realize we know that you don't have it all you don't know it all okay when you want to claim that you know it all and you have it all that is the opposite of humility okay one other attribute is that uh you will seek to add value to others you will seek to add value of the others okay you add value to other people that is why in the bible it says in honor doing what preferring one another you are preferring the other person over yourself you are trying to rate other people over yourself not that you are rating yourself over the other people okay you add value to others then you take responsibility for your actions that is humility that's an attribute of humility of somebody who has humility you take actions for your responsibility okay it is very common that people want to want to shift responsibility of their faults or something to other people but when one is humble if you make a mistake you want to accept that you have made a mistake is that also that is humility then when you have made this mistake a glaring one and you are still trying to defend yourself try trying to prove your point that is not humility at all that is not humility okay and then when you are humble you will be filled with gratitude for what you have you will be filled with gratitude for what you have you will realize that realize that it is not by your power just like i said in zechariah 4 verses not by power not by might bought by what by the spirit by the spirit of you will realize that i didn't have all this by my own power i didn't get all this by my own strength but that god has given them to him so you will be filled with gratitude to god who has given those things to you so with that i think we understand what we are going into humility so we have some questions now that will ask ourselves to throw more light to the topic question number one please we want to be very active we want to be lively you want to be fast excuse me so it's a lady here sorry osha let us have the floor question number one what is your explanation of the principle developed in james chapter 4 verse 10 and saint luke chapter 14 verse 11. okay thank you what is the explanation of the principle developed in james 4 10 and luke 14 11. let us read james 4 10. james 14. humble yourselves in the sight of the lord and he shall lift you up thank you and then i believe we have read luke chapter 2 chapter 14 verse 11 says what for whosoever exalted himself shall be abused i need that humble earth himself shall be exalted so what is the principle being developed in these two verses yes contribution just quickly how would you how would you interpret those verses how would you interpret them how do you see them how do they apply to us or how do they apply to you one says humbled yourselves in the sight of the lord and he shall live thee up and the other one says for whatsoever whosoever exerted himself shall be abased and he that humbles himself shall be assaulted yes they are very there are no hidden meanings to die to those services yes my brother you want to try something [Music] thank what is the opposite of humility yes pride pride okay so he says if if you if you humble yourself god in the sight of god god himself will lift you up but if you uh want to exalt yourself if you want to be proud what do you say will happen to that person he will be abused he will be humbled okay there are so many ways we are people how uh how people exult try to absorb things as themselves yes can we quickly mention some of them some of the ways people absorb themselves or put their themself forward that's the best yes yes maybe if they've attained some um qualification educational qualifications and then you'll boast of it okay boasting of your academic qualification yes [Music] say what titles yes people boast them their titles rendering help to other people and boasting and letting everybody know that you are the one that's rendered maybe you need to remove that mask rendering help for to other people and letting everybody knows that you are the one that actually helped themselves they exalt themselves more than they think of themselves more than they ought to think that's what the bible says some people seek position see position and some people in one way or that they want to put some other people down so that they can be seen as a person up there okay so the the point we are starting to bring up here we can we can we can see it in the parable that jesus told about a pharisee and a republican that went to the temple the republican got to the temple he started talking about all those things that he was doing i pay my tithe i am not a fornicator i am not an adulterer i don't steal i don't do this i don't do that but i pay my tithe i do this regularly and all of that he was praising himself talking so much about the things that he was doing he may have been doing all those things so in all honesty means i've been doing all those things but he was too full of himself instead of humbling himself before god he was trying to exalt himself did he go home to justified no he didn't go home justified but on the other hand you have the the the republican who came gently into the temple [Music] and in in fear in reverence to god he could not even look to god he knew that he was unworthy and he just moved inside by the dead lord all i'm asking for is that you have mercy on me and jesus said that the republican went home justified rather than the pharisee okay that is what that lesson is that the those two verses are bringing before us if we humble ourselves the republican humble himself god exalted him but the pharisee exalted himself but god humbled him okay may god help help us to be able to humble ourself before him all the time he has question number two two what characterities if exhibited would cause god to resist us why see james false shrimp james chapter four verse six okay read james chapter four verse six james chapter four verse six james chapter four verse six but he give it more greece wherefore instead god received the proud but given grace unto the humble okay thank you god resisters the proud but giveth grace unto the humble so what characteristics is if a characteristic if exhibited will cause god to resist us yes what kind of service is that yes pride pride which we have identified as the opposite of humility okay says god resisted the proud and it says the question says for that why why yes why does god receive the proud yes i can see him there please come to the mic because god resisted the proud god he says that you are just repeating what you have said god resisted the proud yes is that wali no isaac okay we have seen on various occasions how god resisted the proud yes we saw him resist lucifer when lucifer wanted to equate himself with god god himself made it clear that he is a jealous god he doesn't want to share his glory whatsoever with anyone the same thing was exemplified in nebuchadnezzar when he when he tried to raise himself and prove that uh the the work that god has used his hand to do it he took the glory to himself we saw how god punished him so god does not take it lightly with the crowd at all thank you god resisted the prayer the proud because god hears pride he has pride okay um let somebody read proverbs 16 18 proverbs 16 18. proverbs 16 18. 18 pride god before destruction and on holy spirit before r4 thank you pride goes before destruction and an holy spirit before our fall so god god is his pride so this shows the danger of having pride in our lives if somebody is proud he says that god resisted the proud let me just what does it mean to resist what does it mean to be resist to resist god resisted the proud yes to do away with something yes to fight against okay god is against [Music] i'll take the word god is against those who are proud okay so may god help us to be humble because we don't want god to be against us very very essential if god is against you then you are not going to have it easy at all they are going to have this result he mentioned the nebuchadnezzar there god was against him when he was proud and he didn't have it easy it was easy for him to go into the bush like an animal and be eating grass for seven years no question number three question number three to what people do god give grace why is it important to receive the blessing from god okay to what people that god give grace yes to what people the humble the humble thank you we are afraid that that god giveth grace to thee to the humble okay and he said why is it important to receive this blessing from god yes why is it important to receive that blessing why is it possible to receive grace from god the importance of receiving grace from god for example the blessing the bible let us to know that the blessing of the lord make it one rich and yes ii corinthians 12 9 let's be fast let me first second corinthians 12 9 verse 9 and he said on to me my grace is sufficient for thee for my strength is made perfect and weakness most gladly therefore will i rather glory in my infirmities but the power of christ may rest upon me thank you lastly titus 3 7 titus 3 7 have been justified by his grace we should be made heads according to the hope of eternal life thank you thank you can see from those those verses of scripture that it's very important that we receive the grace of god in acts chapter 11 and 15 verse 11 he says we are saved by grace is that also we are saved by grace and then in romans 3 24 he said we are justified by grace and in ii corinthians chapter 12 verse 9 he says in any circumstance in a single situation his grace will be sufficient for us and lastly in titus chapter three verse seven it says through grace we are made health through grace we hope to inherit heaven that's what it means so grace is very important and if you want to put it i want to put it briefly i would say that we cannot survive without grace we cannot survive without the grace of god no we see people these days they boast about the the amount of work they have done and the amount of work they are achieved by their power by by resilience by all those things but i will put it to you that you cannot and you will not be able to achieve all those things without the grace of god even our existence our existence we owe it to the grace of god or how much are you paying for the air you are breathing how much it is the grace of god that's supplying these sins for us free or charged if you are alive it is by the grace of god because many people many people who are older who are younger than you have died if you are able if you are very good academically it is because god has given you the retentive memory some people will think it's because they have read so much it's not it may not be some people may have read more than you are and they may not have achieved what you have achieved academically you may think you have survived in your business because you have business equipment you are so good about going about your business and all of that but some people have worked harder than you are you have done and yet we have not have achieved what we have achieved so everything we have we owe it to god this grace is very important that we receive in our lives and it is grace that will last at the end of our life take us to heaven we will only enter even through the grace of god [Music] may god let his gifts abound in our lives in first corinthians chapter four verse seven says what do you have that you have not received and if you have received them why are you boasting [Music] why are you voting there's nothing that will have that we have not received that's nothing just think about about it there is nothing [Music] that we did not receive may god help us to appreciate god and to find his grace question number four question number four in this statement true or false the thought in first peter chapter 5 verse 5 and that young people should advise their elders what to do give a reason for your choice okay thank you maybe read again okay god sit down somebody read first peter chapter five verse five again first peter chapter five verse chapter five verse five five yes likewise you younger submit yourselves unto the elder ye all of you be subject one to another and be clothed with clothes with humility for god resisted the proud and giveth grace to the humble okay so this statement the thoughts in first peter 5 7 that young people should advise their elders what to do true or false everybody very very false very very false it is in fact the very opposite of what that verse is advising us to do he says you younger do what submit yourself unto the elders but what do you see this young people want to turn this vice upside down they want to be the people to tell the others what to do children want to be the people to tell their parents what to do students want to be the people to tell their teachers what to do young people in the church want to be the people to tell the the elders of the church the pastor and the leaders in the church what to do but that is not what this this verse is saying it says the young people should submit themselves okay in other words there must be respect for elders and what wait in what ways do we submit ourselves to the elders let me ask you in what ways i can see a lot of young people here so what we should we submit ourselves to the elders yes yes sir i can see it cannot be otherwise young people should just submit themselves to the elders the elders have experience they have the wisdom they've been in the world longer time before they come into the world so they have seen so much of the world that younger people will just bow down and submit to them so that they can take out of their vast knowledge of love okay thank you very much sir so so we have been told there [Music] our elders told us that young people you don't have the much experience that the elders have you don't have it you must accept that forget about the fact that we are in the in the jet age you know how to use the computer you know how to use the internet more than the elders but the adage is that what the header will see while sitting down the young person may not sit while he's on top of the tree okay but i'm still going back to that question in what ways do we do we do we as young people respect elders do what we do we submit ourselves to the elders yes i still want us to answer that but yes we need to be of assistance to the elders thank you you need to be of assistance to held us in those days in those days when we were growing up apologies to our elders here when an elder is coming and is carrying a a load in his hand once you see that elder fire or far off what do you do you have to run to grab me that header and collect that load from the elder is this the same distance uh young people just uh see that's carrying struggling to carry something like that they just they just pass by they just pass by nobody wants to help anybody you cannot see an elder trying to clean the car that means they cannot help you if they want to do it at all they want to do it because they want to receive something from you not because they have a mind to help see these are the values that we have that that are prevalent in the in the olden days but these days they are getting eroded if these things are getting eroded in the world it should not be in the church young people who are saved should be different from the people of the world we need to show respect to the elders we are not saying you should prostrate before them no but you need to show respect to them very very essential and more importantly more importantly we need to obey them the bible says obey your appearance in their lord obey your fathers in their lord [Music] when they teach us the word of god and we obey we make them happy we make them happy you see if you ask if we ask our father today how do you want us to submit ourselves to you they won't tell you come and give me money come and do this for me no no once you do according to the word of god they are teaching us they are so happy that's all that's that means a lot to them may god come and help us but in this days young people want to tell the others no no that's not the way we are indicate that change you must change it this way you must turn it this way no way no i know god will help us question number five question number five quickly number five according to our texts what else does peter tell us to do how can we do this okay so what else does this tell us to do yes industry first peter chapter five hospital chapter five yes is anybody reading it fine yes likewise you younger submit yourselves onto the elder yeah all of you be subject to one to another scripture in luke 14 7-11 is called a parable our certainly good instruction for those who are present what do you think it might teach us today yes i believe you still remember can you recap it for desiring to sit on the high table that seeking to go to the high table a more honourable person can come to that table and you might be asked to leave for the person to sit that if you go for such gathering we should sit on the lower table then the person that has that ceremony will come and put you to the higher table okay so thank you very much and he says what do you think it might teach us seeking the thought of placing praise again should not be in us question seven question seven question the sin of christ is the first in the list of sins that god considers abominable proverbs chapter 6 verse 16-17 it is believed that satan was cast out of heaven because of his pride he wanted to be equal with god israel chapter 14 verse 12-15 it is no wonder that his children tend to display his nature proverbs 29 23 says that a man's pride shall bring him low okay thank you proverbs 6 somebody read proverbs 6 16 17 quickly 66 17 these six things that the lord hates yea seven are an abominable unto him 17 a proud look a lying tongue and hands that shed innocent blood thank you yes isaiah 14 isaiah 14 12 15 how are thou falling from heaven o lucifer son of the morning how are thou caught down to the ground which this weakened the nations for thou has said in thy heart i will ascend into heaven i will exalt my throne above the stars of god i will sit up i will sit also upon the mount of the congregation in the size of the north i will ascend above the highs of the clouds i will be like the most high yet thou shalt be brought down to hell to the size of the pitch okay so we're giving those verses 107 and it says his children are like i like him and proverbs 29 23 says a man's pride shall bring him low he says we should explain that yes in context of those two passages we read a man's pride shall bring him low yes contributions [Music] nobody's saying anything are you coming to contribute are just coming in okay you can see that in that uh um proverbs chapter 6 verse verses 16 and 17 where god listed about seven sins that he hates and you will see that the one that comes forth is what pride pride is it accidental i don't think so i don't think so okay i don't think so and then that in that isaiah chapter 14 verses 12 to 5 you will see satan there trying to exalt himself trying to exalt himself and he says [Music] but it says that it will be brought low to health okay but there is something there is something in that passage that i want us to pay attention to verse 12 how are thou falling from heaven oh lucifer song of the morning how are that cut down to the ground which this weekend the nations you guys starting rather for thou are said in thine heart this is he was saying if you say i will i will do this i i i appeared about five times in that passage it was so insane those things in his heart did god here sometimes sometimes outwardly some people may may pretend to be to be humble they pretend to be humble but rice enticed them they are very proud and god knows god knows because he says here he was thinking in his heart okay and then we need to know that pride is at the bottom of all disobedience and rebellion against god when you see people who are disobedient to god who are rebelling against the the commands of god what is underneath it is pride because they want they don't want to submit their sense to god they don't want to obey the the worst of god okay so to set oneself above others or the law is in essence pride if you want to set yourself above others you want to set yourself above the law [Music] in any form it is it is pride they call come and remove pride from us may god come and remove pride from us question 8 question 8 he says write a paraphrase of proverbs 16 18 okay progress is in the senses pride goes before destruction and unholy spirit before in fall how can you rephrase this one how can you say it in your own words yes yes are you raising up your hand in total some when someone gets angry when you're always angry and you're always showing displeasure of yourself it tends to show that you will get hurt at the end of the day and for the pride it's a self-destruction thing if you have pride gradually gradually you see yourself to the lowest ground what you think you know at the end of the day becomes nothing and everyone will look at you and become zero from a high point in essence you are saying pride is destructive pride is destructive and that and that i think that aligns with that virus pride was before destruction and a naughty spirit before a fall somebody mentioned nebuchadnezzar earlier on before that destruction before that punishment what attitude did he expect pride pride he had been warned a year earlier and he didn't take to the morning daniel warned him he didn't take to the warning and one night or one one day he just was just looking around the whole of babylon from his yard and he said is this not great babylon that i've built with the power of my mind right go ahead before destruction and the bible says why those words while seeing his mouth what happened to him god struck him he became an animal he became an animal he had to be driven to the bush and he was in the bush for seven years seven years until he realized that god were left in the affairs of men okay you remember herod as well remember herod when he spoke to the people in a haughty manner and the people who are healing him and he was accepting was absorbing the all those praises to himself and then god struck him i was told that immediately there are worms hit him up that him up so the the the some total is that pride is destructive pride brings one law pride with pride will destroy if you don't live pride pride will destroy that person if somebody doesn't live life right pride will dissolve that person that is what it means may god come and remove pride from our lives so this because when we it is when we have when we when we when we have humility that we can gain fever from god and that's what question 9 is all about why is it necessary to have humility in order to gain god's favor why is it necessary to have humility in order to gain god's favor okay why is it necessary to have humility there's nobody saying anything yes sir only and only those who are humble will receive the favor of god always thank you sir it is when we have humility that we can receive favor from god can someone who is not humble get salvation from god if you are not humble you will not be able to confess yourself say sins you will not be able to humble yourself before god and if you cannot do that you cannot receive salvation from god so it is very very necessary true repentance is important for us to be able to receive the favor of god okay we have talked about the pharisee and the andy and the and the republican the pharisee was the republican was humble he was able to receive the favor of god while the pharisee was proud and he went home empty-handed with condemnation in his heart because not let that be our portion so what are we saying here humility is very very essential for our christian growth unity is very very important for us and it's not just for today not just for yesterday not just for today it is for tomorrow and throughout all our lives we need humility all through our lives because it is that humility that we bring god's grace to our lives and it is the grace of god that can help us to inherit heaven may god come and help us may come and give us humility and i pray that and i know that at the end of this lesson we want to pray harnessly it is not just something that you assume that i have it god knows your heart and god can reveal your heart to you you need to come before god even as you are telling yourself that as far as i'm concerned i am humble i have humility you don't it may only mean that you don't have it as you are claiming that i have humility the meaning is that you don't have it so we need to come and humble ourselves before god and said god i need humility not just for today for but for throughout my lifetime i need to be humble lord come and help me and i believe when we pray like that
