[Music] so you can see this is a very old piece uh from the 1800s and it had quite a bit of water [Music] damage so what we've done so far is the carpentry and rebuild uh segment of what we're going to do to it you can still see there's a lot of water damage in the finish and that's all going to be addressed next um but we wanted to get it structurally sound first um so when we're talking about restoration it's more than just the surface level of refinishing it's really getting in there and seeing you know what's missing on the piece what's broken what's going on with the structure and how do we make this this piece as close as possible to what it was when it was first made um so when you get in here uh lot of these moldings were missing so we fabricated those um this will all be stained in later uh over here on the mirror this carving was made from scratch um respecting the same design as down here um this piece was actually cast out of a resin um because we had a copy right here we could make an exact copy um by making a mold and casting it with resin we can make it out of wood also uh but the customer wanted to save a little bit U of time there by um just making a copy of the other one and then we have more moldings down here that were broken um that were filled in and then uh probably the biggest project was over here on the drawers and this is when you really get deep into the piece you start to realize how how bad it can be sometimes um but these drawers were not only very old and rotten but uh they had been used so much that the bottom section of the wood was just eaten away it was just um rubbed back and forth on its guide so many times that it wore away the bottom inch or so um so when you pulled the drawer out it was too small for the space and it tilted down and had all kinds of problems because it just wasn't shaped right um so what we did was uh we cut a clean Edge there and patched new wood into that spot so we have a nice smooth even surface to run on the guide so it comes out nice and straight now works on its guides really well and we put a new back on the drawer um so that it would be a solid box again because these joints were all breaking down um and just wasn't structurally solid anymore um so those are kind of the details that you get into uh when you're doing a full restoration you can see in here too we also uh replac the support guides in there for the drawer to run on um and then I can pull out this other drawer then when we're doing restoration we try to save as much original as we can so if there's good material there there's no reason to get rid of it so this drawer back was okay up to about this point so again we made a clean cut and uh patched in a new piece of wood there and of course the new wood is all going to get stained uh sanded and stained so that it matches the old um so it looks like a you know a true restoration anybody with an eye can tell it's been patched but it's been patched with techniques and materials and quality of what a Craftsman would have done in the 1800s when this piece was made [Music] oh [Music]
