[Music] [Music] what's going on everybody this island hopper tv coming to you from antigua guatemala we're going to show you around this beautiful old city let's do it antique was about an hour and a half away from guatemala city you can get a taxi or you can try and drive it yourself but do be aware the roads are windy [Music] yes we've arrived at this hotel it's 35 a night let's show you around when you visit antigua you'll discover a very rich history associated with the spanish establishment that was in place here [Music] [Music] antigua is a unesco world heritage site and it actually served as the capital of the kingdom of guatemala which expanded many many miles away from the current borders sitting in the central highlands of guatemala it's known for its preserved spanish baroque influenced architecture as well as several colonial churches which have now actually become hotels [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so here we are at the central park known as plaza mayor right here is a church and a central commerce area with a beautiful fountain hello [Music] [Music] so if you look over my right shoulder here you have a volcano known as agua you look over my left shoulder here you have fire fuego volcano fuego and right next to it the name is hard to pronounce for me but i will tell you it translates to sugar cane so three volcanoes right next to antiqua oh so something interesting about guatemala there's actually 32 languages that are spoken here spanish being the primary language but many different dialects of mayan oh so you'll notice these cobblestone roads they were actually put in in 1920 the original stone road by the spanish was about 10 feet below where it was they had to redo it because the drainage did not work correctly and it would build up water so that's why they had to replace the cobblestone road with the new cobblestone road in 1920. [Music] so what we're going to do now is we're actually going to try some local uh mayan candies or guatemala candies [Music] this is coneyita so uh let's give it a whirl it's got like a creamy flavor with a little bit of cinnamon dust so this is called pepetoria it's a pumpkin seed with some sugar let's give it a whirl it's like a pumpkin seed peanut brittle [Music] so i just got done eating that good uh candy that mayan candy now we're going to go to the mayan jade museum the interesting thing about the jade is that in the mayan world that was the currency along with quetzales feathers the bird feathers and lapis lazare obviously the spanish the romans the greeks they transacted in gold but here in the mayan kingdom they were transacting in jade and catsales feathers because green is a significant color to the mayan people this is the mayan museum for jade [Music] so here we are at casa santo domingo this is an old monastery that's now been turned into a hotel when president or former president bill clinton came to antigua here in guatemala he came here but before it was a hotel this was considered a prestigious education center [Music] so in this area right here is a cemetery where they actually have uh skeletons of the old spiritual people who were at the monastery uh out of respect we're not going to film that but if you come here they do have that in the cemetery right on location at santo domingo picasa here [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] all right we've made it to the arch of santa catalina or arco de santa catalina this is known as caye norte all types of variety i'm gonna pick some out what's this uh a little bit of pistachio okay half or one pound after all this walking we're going to get a popsicle something refreshing to indulge in [Music] so i got the maracuya basically said passion fruit so let's give it a try [Music] hello i still got my popsicle but she offered me these really cool scarfs what are they called centro de mesa table runner a table runner okay but you say you can also wear it yeah i have a scarf too this one is the scarf american dollar yeah american dollars twenty dollars yeah these are written by hand not to machine yeah you're pretty sure too the table runner the kettle birds the coffee the sun and the volcano [Music] well since i bought it i might as well wear it at least in the short term uh it's a scarf but we're at puerto santa well that's the entrance for uh the church here so it's one of the oldest churches here in guatemala and antigua now no oh yes [Music] all right everybody thanks for watching this episode of antigua guatemala if you enjoyed it please hit the like button that's the currency that works around here and we will see you on the next one thanks for watching [Music] you
