Dr Lawson not long ago Andy Stanley famously infamously said that we should unhitch from the Old Testament since then we've got all sorts of chaos about uh homosexuality from him dumbing down position saying that you should never say you should never say that the Bible says and you should never say the Bible says so you should um doing the loss and chop yeah yeah that's a PowerPoint that's my power the power point why in the world should we absolutely reject that and preach the Old Testament instead and preach it fervently without apology oh my goodness do do you want to just discard 2/3 to 3/4 of your Bible I mean that is the stupidest most sinful counsel that you could give another person um that's the Old Testament is the Bible that Jesus had the Old Testament is the inspired and errant infallible word of the Living God the Old Testament is the very Foundation uh upon which the New Testament rests the Old Testament is the Bible that the early church used it wouldn't be until the middle of the 40s or the end of the 40s ad ad 40s that the New Testament would even be begin to be written and it wouldn't even be compl completed until the end of the first century and we wouldn't even have the first list of the 27 books that were um recognized as Canon until towards the end of the 4th Century so yes the Old Testament is what Peter preached on the day of Pentecost Joel 2: 28-32 and then he supported it with Psalm 16: 8-11 Psalm 132 vers 11 then he went back to Psalm 16:1 and then he concludes with Psalm 110 ver1 the Lord said to my Lord sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for him it was pure sheer Old Testament preaching of the word of God it was the greatest sermon ever preached in the history of the church and it won 3,000 souls to Christ wow and you're telling me to unhitch myself from from the Old Testament at best it's Fool's talk at worst it's a heretic's talk and so that kind of uh influence is is is is you're going to give an account for that you you're not going to get a free pass on that you you're going to stand before the master as you downgrade and downplay uh 2/3 to 3/4 of his word no it would be terrifying that is why James 3 vers one says let not many of you become teachers my brethren knowing as such we shall incur a stricter judgment it's a stricter judgment for the preacher who makes a boneheaded comment like that um we need the Old Testament it gives us the account of creation it gives us the establishment of male and female gender it gives us the pattern for the home it gives us the the the activity of Satan it it it gives us the first mention of the Gospel uh Genesis 3:15 all of that I just said is in the first three chapters of the Old Testament to say nothing of the entirety of 39 books in the Old Testament there's power in the preaching of the Old Testament and as you trace this out in the book of Acts the apostles just continue to appeal to the oldest Testament read the book of Romans and see how much Paul how many times Paul uses the Old Testament in direct quotes he you know he he doesn't just give this loose paraphrase it kind of says this someplace no he gives direct quotes in the signature text of the entire book of Romans which many people would argue is the most important book in the entire Bible Romans 1:1 17 I mean he says the just shall live by faith for the righteous man shall live by faith uh it's a direct quotation from the Old Testament For Heaven's Sake wh what fool would the the the the book of Romans would implode if you pulled out the Lynch pin of the Old Testament passages of scripture Romans 9 Paul is basing his case Jacob I loved Esau hated before the Twins were even born God had already made a determinative choice as to who would be saved and then he quotes from Exodus I will have mercy upon whom I have mercy I'll have compassion upon who I have compassion and I will harden the rest he he draws from Jeremiah the imagery of the Potter and the clay from Jeremiah 18 his whole argument is based upon the the sure foundation of the Old Testament uh read the Gospel of Luke and with a ballpoint pin just draw a box around every time Jesus quotes from the Old Testament I wouldn't say it was a hindrance to his ministry not at all um so I mean it just kind of rils me up I can tell just just to even hear the stupidity of that kind of comment and it calls for a public repentance um to to cast that kind of an influence upon people who are being duped and conned by by that kind of talk [Music] amen
