forget yeah I a year with gigy before well yeah half a season before yeah he changed it I think gig was probably G me the most the most as well yeah CU he TI he give it away a lot would he but yeah to be fair he he kept like that yeah never must have got must get a few a couple a couple may be a couple you got one that I can remember can I can can I just tell you by the way I gave and Andrew Cole his most important goal ever which one Manchester United's most important goal I got to do you know what was that your ball the ball was fine but had to make you what I mean Happ seriously he had a bit to do but watch it yeah of course you can watch it get my go so basically left foot 50 yards away I've got to drop it in over the center back shoulder who was the center back call I don't remember the center back sa S Campbell it's not exactly no I don't think he was on that side it was sa and somebody else that skes John sces John skes SC joh sces I think sa was on that side if John sces so would play left if John scales was right definitely yeah I think it yeah it was Co just drifted over the shoulder spotted the Run little left foot you came up the bench on I want to say the you give me a few assists thank you thank you in training when more than you yeah cuz I had left and win as I see I saw giggy do it and they showed Canon I was on the other day Canon I's like icon Legends thing was on the other day remember that go what what he scored at the back post with gigsy where gigsy first time right across the hole of the box and Canon I just tapped it in man they showed a lot of stuff where gigy was in like assisting everybody bro coy roomed gigs call how long you Room Gig uh first the first few years before the manager changed everything was it five years four five years three four years yeah about yeah about that Jesus that's a handy double act to two in the room he was quiet he was quiet imagine up to preas I bet you a few you should move around by the way and should come up you having a tear of coffee do that sorry about that but we got to call to come up to the we ends up in in the L we ends up getting our own beds I'm not sure that works you know a hotel before a home match he saying that work we l it do who we who you obviously we who's we we liked it who's we I didn't I liked it Friday night yeah switch on everyone getting sleep no one's got kid problems like crying I think I didn't mind that it was like everything taking your mind away from everything before you get get there you get on the Friday already into game mode game League like the kids crying the day sport were it's the best for me the not not being there like that I hated that especially home games all of a sudden it started doing that foolishness [Music] right did you feel that at Arsenal that there was a sort of little bit of lack of love for you in those days that you% George didn't like me from day one how were you as a sub I wasn't a sub kind of guy and I never spoke to Yoki on a pitch it just happened basically me and Yoki played in silence for whatever reason he he snubbed me didn't shake my hand on my debut right and I that was you done I never asked what happened then I just had a fall out with the manager oh watching me he used to spend about two hours on his REI in the chain after honestly you should have followed I've seen football from a different level so now when I'm in it it doesn't really phase me that way I just feel like he's giving me all the tools where's the pride come from Co that's what I've been brought to have pride in yourself I mean so you can you can change now don't even now you mean you have that look on you is he going to hug me or kill me welcome to stick to football brought to you by Sky and this week I'm joined by a former teammate and a Manchester United Legend a Newcastle Legend someone who scored hundreds of goals in the Premier League one of the Premier League's greatest ever goal machines Andy Cole call how did you enjoy last week the uh very good Gary documentary thing yeah yeah I enjoyed it skip W I was doing a charity function I was everyone wanted you there knows me better than that everybody wanted you there were you the only one missing no it was Lord's missing Beckham flew in and everything I was like where's boy it's sure isn't it did you enjoy making the money yeah it was good inter you as well you wore the T was bed no I didn't know what the dress code was I just said watch the dress code tonight and everyone was wearing can we speak can we speak to the Our Guest so was the night good it was the premier good it was good good it was good it's a good show yeah yeah when it when is it next Friday so yeah I think so yeah yeah it'd be good you w't like it probably something'll know you I just relax 1299 the C that much can we film Roy watching it for the first time please is the next door how did you get that se last question for me what did you get that se how many goals uh 24 I think it 24 25 okay I'm actually ask you all a question actually on Coy mhm what was the most goals that he scored in a single season excluding penalties the most yeah yeah you didn't take penalties did you no you didn't get 41 did you I'd say 32 I'm going to say I'm say what Premier League or or this is Premier League I'm going to say t well no no if it's all get 33 League game is it it makes difference that new I think it's league if it's League I'd say 28 no i' got I've got 34 exactly and that season you got 47 goals and assists in that season how many assists 13 assists not bad why did you not take penalties if you were like the best I know why we starting there but how far that is you know how far 12 yard I I just I didn't I didn't believe that if I took penalties I would justify myself if I'm going to play and be a SC goal scorer okay that was my mindset you know if I can't do an open Play I'm not good enough but you would you it now you regret not taking penalties no I don't but everyone keeps saying to me oh you're an idiot you should have took penalties well you would have fancied the call it would you would have fanc yourself oh yeah go he must one in his shootout no did you take any n shootouts he didn't do shootouts did we no odd one didn't get there who took the P I was there I was there yeah I wasn't there fin were you gone then you must been gone right uh Den Brucey Bru Eric see I could I couldn't Yoki took a few I couldn't stand on the pitch while a center half Tak a penalty or fullback no hey but I be my 20 goals once bruy was a good finisher man I know but still he was good you know what as well with Brucey remember that Sheffield Wednesday game when obviously he was doing some Center forward playing that were you thinking wow this man could play up front man link play yeah he's really good he was clever Brucey yeah and call let's go back to Arsenal when you started okay when I was a kid when you were at Arsenal yeah and Ian I've got a quote here from you sure when I went to Arsenal Coy was someone that they said no he's never going to score more than 10 goals because he's lazy but when he played in games you could see that he did something and when he went to when he went to Newcastle he frightened the [ __ ] life out of everyone he's still someone to this day doesn't get the credit when people talk to me about the top end of the Premier League is absolutely ridiculous is that that's a fair quote for righty yeah uh yeah oh I want say I was lazy though no no I'm saying that was the suggestion yeah yeah you know the thing remember when I got to when I got to Arsenal Coy was Coy was obviously there he was younger he's coming through and like people like Pat rice and Jordi Armstrong you know when I'd watched Cody play when he was training remember we played we played down at Brighton in the reserves yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it was really cool and so how come what's what's going on with with Cody said yeah you know he's he hasn't doesn't seem to have that drive for goal he doesn't seem to have that hunger for the goal and it was really strange because when we played I think we played at Brighton we both scored you know and I I couldn't I couldn't understand it but then did you go to Fulham on loanh first Fulham yeah I was like how how come we loaning out loaning him out but then it's it just went on and on because you just noticed as it was going on and then some of the times like Cody would be training and they're warming up and Cody would be a bit further behind them and then they'll be they'll be they' be quite vexed about that obviously didn't have the patience with him but it's I don't know when it happened for him but I always use him as um as a goal scorer that can go from people thinking you're not going to do it to actually doing it when he went to Bristol you started to see when it was Bristol when you started to see but then Newcastle with be in that it just it went somewhere where I I I honestly it went supernova yeah did you think that did you feel that at Arsenal that there was a sort of little bit of lack of love for you in those days that you% yeah yeah yeah yeah I I W say it was hard but I just think understanding they didn't didn't want to understand I think especially with Georgia you know George was hard work at the best of times I mean I think in those days as well they didn't really have a lot of respect for the younger generation ation as his yts yeah just like proper mug you off um in what way call it just the way they used to just dismiss you I mean like right their perception you're not working hard enough is that um oh he's arrogant he's got an attitude and all that kind of stuff I mean it's not like the one to get to know the individual it's just like straight away the perception is oh this is what we think um so I remember when I left and Baldi and Lee Dixon and all those guys were saying to they said we all said to George you should never have sold him never have sold him and they was saying a same thing again oh he's not going to score enough goals in the Premier League or whatever it's going to be this is that I I just I just decided I just want to get my head down and that's what I did that's why I went to Bristol sitting instead of going anywhere else go there take that step backward to try and move forward when did the goals click though Co because remember like I said when they said he won't scor one of 12 goals a season what happened at some stage where it just it was just happening did you get you know when you start scoring you just say I score all the time when did it happen no I I genuinely believe I could always score goals but when I was playing in the youth team I I I was doing different things just playing what what kind of player were you then call it me I always used to get on the ball right always used to get on the ball create score goals or whatever it may be and like it wasn't until you actually play League football as well you start to understand like scoring goals is very important I mean cuz don't forget when when you're a whs or a young pro you going loan you don't understand how the other other half live mean you got guys need to pay mortgages got kids got whatever you like Y and I'm might ask I've not got this you know so that's when the penny kind like drops and you understand it a little bit more what was it that George Graham didn't like about your style of play would it been thr pressing from the front or not being a Target man or what because obviously they did have a Q targetman around that time didn't they George didn't like me from day one George just thought I was arrogant CU I just you know me I speak my mind when I have to everyone says I'm a quiet guy but you know that when I'm ready I will speak my mind and it's as simple as that and I I did that a few times and obviously he didn't like that I was speak in my mind it's like Pat didn't like it at times or Jord Armstrong but for me personally I'll get it off my chest when I believe the time's right and I did that they didn't like it and yeah I remember I made made my debut for Arsenal um and everyone believed that right C's going to get a chance now and then he shipped me out on loan I ended up going to for him then went to Bristol City and then I remember I was um just about to play a game for brist City and Pat rice called me in the hotel and said to me uh Coy um do count your interest in you I said oh okay is George prepared to sell me he said to me Co I'll be back to you I'll come back to you I saw Pat about two years ago at Emirates and he still didn't tell me then I mean that's over 20 years you know but in that time that they sold me and that and that that's what I was dealing with you know a lot of nonsense like that when that happened col how did you feel to knocky confident or that really doubt or yeah that really really reved me up yeah because Denny Smith brought me to Bristol City and basically he done all his money like 500 Grand you know so he done all his money and Denny said to me from day one I will not stop you from going anywhere you know if a club comes in I'll let you go and he he was true to his word unfortunately before BR City so me to sact him so I was off thinking now there's no way now I'm going to move on also took over Russell lman same thing just said to M Cole you're too good for this level if we get a good deal for you you're who's the players that was helping you with the goals cuz that's when the goals started we had lero xen Wayne Allison um janovski he could play could absolutely play and they were all good with me you know I mean they was all saying look this level you shouldn't be playing at this level and he all pushed me on you're learning your trade then you yeah yeah am the stories that we hear from players who especially at a big club like Arsenal with expectation is to go and byy players young Lads it is hard and sometimes it is it all P out fine isn't I I think sometimes call his about learning his game and playing League football is a different animal to that you stuff and Reserve football so I think that was just part of your journey yeah part of your journey of course cuz you were enjoying it did you feel like that's why you were scoring goals relaxed did you enjoy that time yeah driven yeah you know me I've always been driven um yeah but I was in D I think the loan periods when you go away on loan as a young kid that's where you learn a hell of a lot you know because you understand football what football especially at that level yeah because you don't know what Elite level is about but that level you get it you know there's people doing things that they have to do they have to win they got to do this you got to do that so for me to go in there and experience that at such a young age you know I think late running life I'm talk s myself what I've been at that level I know what it takes [Music] yeah Newcastle was a great move here wasn't it the Newcastle yeah how did that happen cuz it came about quite quickly wasn't it and that's totally come out of the blue I me um when they spoke to Bristol City and I remember speak to Kevin he said to me I saw you play one night and you bandage his knee up and all that stuff he said yeah from there I said yeah I need to sign you CU you want to play when you're injured you know but for me I just want to play football you know it's like I said he totally come out the blue and I I remember Kevin saying to me can you come up like the following morning I was like no I can't make it I'm doing my laundry like he was on the phone like well can you make it in the morning and I said yeah I I could make it in the morning and I remember speak to Lee CL Lee cl's my big mate in that and he was saying oh coy coy just come just come I remember saying thing you hesitant about going call is that what you were saying you weren sure about it right why they pay why were they offering not you money what what was the deal they were giving deal uh 1.75 us I think us had 30% sell on right okay and I remember saying to clarky Clark's near Scotland by the way wheel massive Newcastle I it's a huge Club but I say you know how far it is and he just said to me come on call it I look after you I look after you and Kevin yeah to a certain extent yeah but when clar said come on you score goals I look after you this yeah go and go for it and that's I just went for it from then I mean I was in a team that we playing real good football they was promoted that I think 12 games to go and they kept saying oh we need you co to get us over the line I'm not saying that that's not I mean 12 games to go you guys are in a strong position I you don't need me to get over the line uh made my debut come on sub against Swindon and then the week after he put He put me in the team and uh I got 12 and 12 did you get 12 yeah 12 and 12 wow so from Bor in the team where you just in then and then 12 and 12 yeah I was surprised to be even in the team cuz they were playing so well yeah who up front of the time uh Ned Kelly yeah but he was just desperate to get in the team cuz he was desperate just to try and well get winning the league naturally but I just want to get promoted yes and Beardsley yeah see again you see when you get you get a player like Beardsley like like even with me AR you get someone like Limar they want you to score they they they would rather honestly honestly they would pass it to you if they're a yard out that's the kind of player you want to play with i i us grew up watching them too yeah obviously do yeah who was the left for a midfielder at Newcastle at the time L midfielder he was SC yeah sellers bro he was decent really lovely football got a few assists for your call yes yes when you said earlier on Coy that um didn't George didn't understand you I I must admit when when you first came to United I I I sat next to at one to you obviously you sat here and I I found it at the start thinking because you do have that look even now you know mean you have that look on you me got it now he is he going to me kill me you don't let people in easy I would say you don't suffer FS there no no no no what's the point of doing that no that's come on you know me now you know what I don't like people who take Liberties um I'm just me and I've always tried to be me you I mean so obviously like he said he took you a little bit of time to get used to me know but once you knew knew me you know what I'm about I mean you know I play football to win I said that I don't like people taking a mick you know but we all get another laugh and joke as you said I'm a quiet guy but when it comes to it push come to shove I'm at the front of the queue that was that time at Newcastle that's obviously when I was going up thinking like I really want to be a football player and going watching you that's I was like I was in a obviously there was yourself there was that the time Michel just come through fou all these sh all these players and I remember watching just think that's what I want to be was so good watching it and then like mid to late ' 90s unbelievable no I was going to say did you go so 1.75 million to Newcastle and then did you leave Newcastle 7 million was it yeah 6 million and Keith kesp yeah wow so it was a successful how long were you at Newcastle for uh two years oh two years two years I think everyone seems to think I was I was around a lot longer yeah you know um about two years you usually want to strike a comes to United obviously that was a big fear the time but I remember my mindset when you came in is I never doubted you I never thought you know usually just chat in the dress room or you know how will players settle in but I was they'd be fine you know it was never maybe because obviously my mindset what what youve done in Newcastle and it'd always be question marked particularly Strikers at United it can be hard going but I I remember I never once I don't think ever doubted you going to score loads of goals yeah had you had a bit of you had a bit of a Swagger about which you need as we know had a big Club so it was um well never an issue where where did your game go from I know it I know where it went when it came to obviously United but where did it where did your game go to from what was the biggest change in your game from say arsenal to Bristol to Newcastle in that period where was sort of Newcastle big yeah yeah cuz Kevin just want me to stay in the box and score goals he that was his that was it literally he's just said to me Co I don't want you to get involved in any link up play Just 18 yard box but you hated that did you did you argue with him I remember there's a hattick against Liverpool which was which was totally TV gamei that just in there movement bang mov bam yeah that was a that was a time where no one really wanted to play Newcastle cuz you just couldn't you couldn't stop them certain games you remember in the goals you were slid in for one of them yeah yeah there's a goal against Chelsea from outside the box with the just coming into the box left left left foot yeah I'll take the box but it was just it was just on the in just on the inside Co but it went in this top corner right and you're thinking that he's going to go there and it flew in you thinking man he's gone somewhere it's like see mateta score that go for Palace he like when you think this guy's knows remember ready now but call that instruction that um Newcastle stay in the Box Score goals that wasn't enough at United was it no far from it uh when I came and kiddo appoint me one day and just talking in the corridor remember Kido saying if you think scoring 40 goals at this football club is good enough got no chance I looked at kid say he's talking about by the way I me I to score goals I got it I got it um understand the training though was the training in general at being at Manchester United you're not just in a team to score goals I mean you got to work hard you got to get involved in everything you know that newcas had the luxury with by I didn't have to do it so that's when I'm starting to say well things have got to change here it's going to take a little bit of time but I think ultimately I learn of great players and if you learn of great players you know you things become a little bit easier well that was the other thing for me to do that was um so I I played a lot number 10 and then when um I went as a number nine remember fgy saying to me just stay in the Box stay away and I I really struggle with it to have that patience to yes just stay up front I was like itching to come back and get on the ball I was like I need to play but then obviously i' done it and that was my best goal scoring year but I actually didn't enjoy the game yeah just give context to that cuz when you first came you were playing in a PA but you're talking about like the sort of 2011 season was it 9 10 9 10 11 when Cristiano left and he just said to him stay up front stay within the actual WI I hated it I didn't enjoy the game I come off I had score two goals and I come off the pitch and I was like happy it's hard is it disci feel like you being involved so is it all about the goals then for Strikers or would you go off your overall performance do you know what I mean like how much you got on the ball cre go i' go off how you play and even if you it didn't score if it play well I'd be happy yeah it's funny because as a striker me as well one of the things I always wanted to make sure I worked on was the link upup playing the first touch and even if I scored in the game if there's time I could look back where the touch is bad or the link UPS you feel you do feel that because you want it to be perfect the goals are not just the thing that makes you say Yes man I don't need to worry it's the play that helps the team to progress that breaks down off of you which is what which I used to worry about more than anything else but that's why you are the best of the best because there'll be some Strikers who probably would score a goal and think you know what I did all right today like you always want strange you say that but ultim well you need to score goals you know what I mean the contradiction are going be a team player but not good at the end of the season going I've got 12 15 goals CU for the big clubs you're going yeah you have to be a team player of course but if you're getting 10 15 goals only you know they're looking lot stri the way the game's played now if you get 10 15 goal everyone tells you've had a great season yeah yeah it's amazing I know what you mean to go STS probably disappoint you talk about link play still one of the most iconic moves I think is when you York when over at Barcelona still now if someone does that now you still like yor yeah it is yeah it's true co you got going back you played with Peter be then you went and you came to United and played with can now what was the big difference did you find that a little bit overwhelming when you first came a little bit like in terms of the aura the presence of can I found it a little bit you when you first come in no but if you look at them as players they're totally different players you know Pete was the individuals you get on The Bard but he' looked to try and take people on as well you know would uh no Peter his little shimmy and get on the ball lots of slip people in you know Eric played a totally different way to Peter in what way just the way he pitched himself on the pitch you know the position he used to take up you know I think we looked at Peter like we got to give every ball to Peter I mean to sorry to Eric you know I think when I played at the Newcastle he wasn't like that you know I mean people get on the ball when they need to get on the ball but everyone else would play you know I think Manchester United if anything was going to go to Eric give it to Eric everyone win the ball back give it to Eric it's interesting you say that yeah did you yeah right from an opponent looking in one of the things that we would U be saying with K is do not give him too much space don't let him have the space because probably if I'm playing for United and he's in space you want him to have it so I our match was to make sure that you'd make if he gets it you're in his face straight away I would probably say give it to him all the time as well if he's got space because he's can do something did you find it harder to play with Eric than Peter yeah yeah I did yeah I think like I said sometime Eric would drop real deep sometime you're getting off you guys I mean and ultimately that's when you're up front by yourself and if you get it in the wide ear as fullback and then knock it forward or whatever you're playing against you're fighting against three basically full back two Center offs or whatever then what can you do if the ball's not ideal or you're Sparky it's true yeah you know so then then like I said you one against it was a little bit bit tough at time but once I got used to it and understood it I just got my head down and got on with it did Ro give you many assists must got one or two maybe a few lucky ones yeah but even appar game you rable hold it up and Link it up Cory again you were just mature you obviously that was and maybe people look back at certain goal scores and you were way better than that than people probably give you credit for but that's life isn't it people sometimes perception of a player but you're linkup player certainly improved over the few years at United right yeah I mean I I I don't think I've ever se mean when he came he was quite clearly in my mind going to be the goal scorer The prominent goal scorer but then when you think of where he evolved to that actually he was actually a part of a partnership that was as subservient as you were prominent you equal weren't you in terms of you never when you played with even with actually with Ole or with Teddy you played in a partnership whereby you actually adapted your game from being sort of like the number nine to being part of a pair and that I don't think I'd ever seen anybody else do that is that what kid was saying to you is that what basically yeah but I think when when you're playing such a good team yeah you have to evolve because you realize the focal point you are not the focal point it's not about scoring goals I mean because your strike partner can do that as well so if you can play as a two and cause as much problem as possible that's what you're out there to do yeah I must admit I I at United I never judged the strikers off how many goals they scored obviously if they scored important goals great but I always thought someone would score in the team it was up to whether I could see them all the time when I was on the ball and you key for me as well yeah that was the key honestly if you weren't showing either in that Channel or on the dag or you weren't sort of honestly I'd be like I'm sorry that and to be fair that's where I think it got to where whoever played up front in that period when you were there you could see them you'd have to have that option somebody there and you'd have maybe a few Runners but somebody I when I got it wherever I received it I need to see the Striker's eyes would it be colie yorky Teddy to turn it around the corner you know but lad's but lad's coming in there but really wanting it some players come in there and go I'm free but you know I want to see I'm going to whip that in you you better look after it you have Runners off you you go I was going to say in respect of like so you so there's yourself um there's yourself Teddy Ole and and Dwight but like there was no State obviously people you teddy they talk about you and Teddy and how you got on but there was no time that I watched that four and you could feel anything other than danger whoever's playing oh he whichever two dead right yeah absolutely whichever two that that you know what I mean it was and such different types of players it was it was scary so whichever one of the whichever two was going to play it's going to be a massive problem imag you look now and you think of course man you look at them for you just mentioned then yeah and then you look now to Manchester United for instance one Striker yeah and and that was the difference back in the day we talk about and the competition to to play to keep that's what it is if you look back in the day just say United when we played the team was maybe having an half D up against it and just say York and Coy was starting our other way around and the manager looking over the shoulder he's got Teddy and Olie or Coley and York imagine going to get warmed up going on these two are coming on then you wonder why you get over the line in the with the big prizes you go that's they're not bad options Off the Bench but for Strikers though the point I'm making for Strikers there is a there's a natural selfishness that you do we that that you do when you're playing in no when you're playing in that environment it's something you have to temper down because it's you know that everybody's going to do their job some people can't get to that level and think no I want more I I I want more I want to be the you never you never personalities of OE and Teddy were good particularly That season OE particularly over his career and Teddy but Teddy had a difficult start to his United Career so Teddy I don't think would have been kicking and screaming when he was in the starting 11 at that particular time obviously yor and kley were the star men but there was times you were taking a squad rotation so that's where you go back that's where you have to praise Ali and Teddy the other kind of Fringe players to be ready righty you know these LS come on you see LS coming on now you can see it's a bit of a chore coming on yeah these Lads were CH the bit ready that's why they top Pros you couldn't knock him how were you as a sub when you were sub how yeah I wasn't a sub kind of guy no cuz we had had on Ollie would say how he was preparing and did did you just get I wasn't a sub gameer I remember one year I fell out with a manager and he asked me playing a reserve game I said I'm not playing The Reserve game not at United yeah yeah I'm not playing I was coming back from inja I'm not playing she said okay not a problem uh we went down to hyri and he put me upstairs to watch the game didn't he yeah and we lost 3-0 and he was OB obviously he was devil you know I said myself he's going to like wait me I got get on with it I mean week after that obviously I got back involved and got myself back in the team but I was just that mentality sometimes to be a sub at times was like you cheese me off you know and obviously that that gets the fire burning even more but it is what it is I look back now and say yeah yeah Pride yeah would you would you change that now Co is that something I couldn't because if I look at my city and look at my career now the things I did then that's what I didn't right I mean so I look back now and said could you have changed that a little bit no because without being the player that I was no yeah I mean I think the only thing I turn say yeah I left man united when I had the opportunity to stay but that was me just saying my pride saying you need to go play football you need to play as many games as possible but I wouldn't change anything when you came off the bench did you make an impact or you feel like you were better start no I I always tried to make an impact I think when you come off the bench as a strike you always want to try and get involved natur you want to try to get yourself a goal try and help the team or whatever maybe but I like to believe if when I did come on I did try and make an impact yeah you know I'm not sitting well coming on in a mood or anything like that I'm coming on saying right my team needs me I want to try and make an it's so hard coming on as a forward though I used to ha been on the bench and when you come on and you've got like 10 15 minutes yeah yeah yeah and then just to get your breathing going and cuz you're making runs intense runs just to get your breathing going it's hard to come before you know it the game's done you're like that you just warmed up at least you've got a chance to be a hero though cuz the defend Defenders will be knackered you're coming on I don't know I I've never been here so bad I thought you were going to [Music] say obviously it was it's been well a well told story about you you and Teddy and to be fair I it was never obvious in the changing room obviously he it was never obvious it was never obvious in the changing room I'm a nice guy come on man yeah but it was never obvious in the changing room but but I think back now because obviously you're playing together at time so you had to speak to each other on the pitch or give it never never never but information over or did it come from anything did it come from anything you love that one over you Valencia say say it again Co I never spoke to Yoki on a pitch it just happened I never spoke to Yoki I just look at Yoki I know you a quiet but yeah no no but you know when sometime too much information on football pitches too much so it alert the defender you think so we basically me and Yori played in silence glance looking at each other yeah we just look at each other I didn't so how did how do you know to how did you know to over and stuff positions Instinct I always knew where it was I had it with t where obviously for different reasons he didn't speak so he could more about but by I contact Coe was there any a particular moment where you and you and Teddy it didn't you just you you just bam like the Friendship couldn't happen did something happen you have a Vex this or argument something it it obviously all it started like when I made my my England debut and he he just for whatever reason he he snubbed me didn't shake my hand on my debut right and I that was you done yeah I was mortified I wasn't I was disappointed I was disappointed yeah of course as far as I'm concerned you're a senior Pro remember I've always watched England playing when someone's making a debut whoever comes off makes a massive beine for that individual to say hey Al you coming as a sub call yeah okay and I thought all right cheesed off naturally and just got my head down when he joined man united I was like all right get on with it I remember the first day preseason the boys were like couldn't stop laughing at me why because they knew that you yeah he didn't hide being pissed off very well everyone knows that and then come in pre-season playing a game you know when someone's like trying to coach you into positions I'm like y I've been at manit a minute now you I actually know what I'm doing yeah and then that happened I let him know don't try and Coach me the position cuz I've been at man united I've actually got a dub on playing for his football club and then um we play with do that and then I remember the final sh for me was at at Bolton we end up join 111 at old traford and um we they scored a late go and he said to me that's your fault that wow I remember say he was right he was right yeah no was it was it I don't know the story around I'm in the story if I can blame someone else for a goal I will you I said to myself okay um let just get to the full time now and like you I'm won the last off the pitch right that day I was won the first off the pitch you know so I've run down the tunn and I wait for him to come in and then we've had a little bit of a set to I mean I've just about CAU my my arm back and then wow Peacemaker peace Peacemaker come in for about you just ready to yeah yeah okay Peacemaker come in for about 30 seconds and then turn it on its head what did you say was I trying to break it up you you tried to break it up and then you got involved hey story my life story my life Cory yeah what happened what do you mean you got involved how did you get involved was you you're trying to stop it and then did I have a few words with Teddy or something yeah right right right I you know you know what's really important about all this stuff and I go back to co with hangups with Teddy and whatever and again we obvious say there's two sites every store but the key is for all this stuff this arguing it never interfered I don't think so people might go well that's not good for the team the main thing but it never interfered with our targets as a team and that's trying to win the following weekend or next game I think people have to remember that that's all part of that kind of you know what it's it's it's elite level professionalism righty did did that ever happen to you in yor because I couldn't walk into a change room thinking there's one of them that I'm not speaking to I just couldn't live like that me I have to go and speak but as Lord just off for calling Teddy does smik I had that though I had not getting on probably with someone but when we played together on the pitch we played really well together not names but when we crossed over the white line I would anything and she would have as well I think you don't have to be no I don't I don't you I don't think you would ever not speak to someone I think every part speak to everyone but remember vidage um he was a nightmare he he'd have an argument someone told remember he didn't speak to gigsy for six months didn't speak to Patrice for months didn't speak to have argu argument with someone and he just wouldn't speak to him and then I had to argument with him one time and he he was going down that same rout and she pulled him and said grow up what yeah the teammates but I think then obviously cuz gigy didn't bother with them to speak back then and it went on for months and he was Captain time so childish yeah did did it did it affect anything did it affect anything the way you played did you see any no not really I wouldn't say so that's the key is it that's the key I had to obviously you had as well it with the manager where we had a fallen out but come to match they had run through a brick wall yeah wouldn't let that bother our players for myself for the team yeah did you pman say grow yeah was there ever what so with the manager call how was your relationship with him from the begin when when he first was he the first person to call you when you left Newcastle I never spoke to him until I was basically on the way down to Manchester that evening you guys just played in um the FA Cup against shefford United right obviously I went in Newcastle that morning didn't know anything till that evening spoke to him when you guys were on the way back from Sheffield just said I'll speak to you the following morning and that was that so I i' never spoke to him June that period I said I didn't know the deal was going to happen or anything were you posing Coy oh yeah like you're up in Newcastle things are going great and all this and you're listen you're on why did Kevin sell you or why did you leave cuz I that I was I say I was I was actually across that deal believe it or not a little bit unusually so Keith gby was one of my best friends shock you've got your fingers in it no no Keith no I remember Keith com and seeing me Keith same birthday as me used to take him home all the time and stuff so I knew Keith really well Keith came and see me and says look I've been off to go to Newcastle as part of a deal you be you don't need to go he was playing at United a few times yeah he yeah but the deal won't happen and you know I've been told it's you he was a million out of the 7 million yes that's right that was that was how it how it was structured and um he said no I've got to go up and he said Keith you know Kevin Keegan won't do the deal unless he gets Keith gpie that was the you but it was a good deal for Kei as well absolutely time my point is though why why would new why would Newcastle sell you were you asking to leave or no I never asked what happened then I just had a fall out with the manager oh tell about that seriously I've not known about the what with Keegan yeah in me Jesus Christ bro I didn't know that yeah we we had to fall out the um what happened Co the year before uh played Southampton at the Old Dell and in in in the those days it was coach yeah so imagine a coach from Newcastle to Southampton that's a fair track yeah played the Sunday and then from uh Sun Southampton he was up to London could was The League Cup midweek so uh we played the game Lost 2-1 drove up to London and we had a I think we had a warm down the morning after the day day off warm down and I remember coming out and I remember kin s oh morning Co morning morning boss you're okay said yeah you fancy it this morning I said I'll be honest a little bit tired just being honest you know he said ah so do you fancy I said yeah not a problem yeah he said to me well if you don't fancy it yeah you can f off wow so was he poking you you think yeah so I said not a problem to me I mean turned around got shed pack my bag and left wow no he didn't mean [ __ ] off he he didn't mean get in your car and gold call I mean he so I just said myself you know not a problem to me cuz I'm not having people talk to me that that was my mental where did that come from though why did it come for you like that it's mostly because we lost on the Sunday yeah did he think you didn't f it in the game or something no no not that Kevin Kevin was a very emotional manager yes yes very very we saw that you know and like I just said myself having anyone talk to about that i' actually I've done nothing wrong by the way you I'm just being honest you've asked me I said I feel a little bit tired I mean you don't come back with that one so so I left went missing for a few days what yeah she get car and goes back to Newcastle or what no no no I stayed in London at at a time I was seeing my girlfriend and I just said I love a few days with ain't got a problem you know and you missed the game there was a game yeah I miss fil good it all wrong you know yeah just few days listen don't be saying this is all good either what listen so basically You' gone for three days in London you've gone missing basically were they in contact with you was Kevin in contact with you no so no I didn't want to talk to him his phone was off obviously I I was speaking to my agent at the time he kept saying you need to go back and I'm like did you know anything there's no man united in the in the picture no nothing nothing nothing at all I just saying I'm not going back not going back and then um I spoke to um Freddy Shephard who who's no longer with us and he said to co come on we're going to have to sort this out so I think I went back up end of the weekish yeah might have been the Friday the Thursday night all Friday end up had a meeting with Freddy Terry M Kevin and a few other people and I said look we need to sort out I said okay not a problem sort it out they end up giving me a new contract I end up playing on the Saturday beating wi I think it's 3-0 I think I got a brace so I might have got KN myself on but I hadn't trained obviously all week I mean I I thought that was the end of it I thought yeah I'll just get my head down now and I do what I got to do but with Kevin Kevin holds on to things yeah you know and the year later by Christmas he moved me on saying look um everyone's found us out now so I'm going have to change the way we play and I thought it's great that you could move to a c black man united you got to win things and so he came to see you said that no Kevin only spoke to me on the way down to Manchester so who told you that even that's what he was saying okay that evening I don't forget I went in that morning before I left he didn't say a word to me so who told who gave you the first call from Newcastle to say look we've accepted a bid for you or oh we agre to didn't the only time I spoke to Kevin like I said was that night I mean my agent at the time knew obviously knew that the deal was going to go ahead but I didn't I didn't speak to Kevin or anything but like I said going down that evening spoke to him briefly on the phone and that's what he said wow that was a [Music] deal how do you feel about England feel you should have played more yeah yeah definitely but was politics man England was was crazy politics I remember sitting in the room at Maiden Castle Newcastle training ground and remember David Davis yes sat in the room Kevin's got the phone and says might C listen to this and then David Davis was saying why Terry wasn't going to put me in the squad and whatever which which one was which Squad was this not 96 was it no no this is just a basic normal International game obviously he doesn't train every day cuz I've struggling with Shin spits ten I still scoring goals in that and saying like these are the reasons why we're not going to pick him so like well you're not want to pick him but he's playing every game he's scoring goal that's when I went on that crazy run he's scoring goals he plays every Saturday he might not train every day but he's still scoring goals yeah we know but these are the reasons why okay and I think from then I knew my England career was never going to be a starter um at Glenn Glenn come out and said what he said here we go we back to square one against so I've had to put Glenn on blast that that was that was a killer that was it really yeah yeah it was a mammer blow really to say that it was rude you know it was disrespect because I'm playing for Manchester United Man United playing Champions League football and the teams we playing in Champions League football are better than what England are playing qualifiers yeah but yeah I'm scoring in Champions League games so I was like make what was his exact quote Co was need more he needs more than five chances game to score one goal and I've always said now if I took them all I was noise I was went crazy on is that bad L I know it's not a good thing to say but would get I think's bad that but if he comes and says it to you of course I'm not saying this a thumbs up for what he said but that everyone Strikers you know the thing with that as well though Roy the thing with with that as well no no I can see why he's upset obviously but when P going really bad like some managers most Strikers need a few chances no Striker scores every chance he he's not player I get it and the second thing is to be fair you don't say that publicly about anybody I get it I'm not I'm not sure that's not depending on the character of Glen but manager if he's if his character is not that that strong and you can't just blast through that because of where he was and who he is that is a that's a that's a killer that's that's the kind of thing you hear from somebody good who's at a level where that is it's irresponsible it's an irresponsible thing to say i' probably go as far as to say how did the England Journey end was it your decision did you play 15 times yeah in the end I'll just said myself you know he's getting faral I'm I played against um aan I think uh got a ticket suspending for the next game and I remember Fen saying to me oh okay I can't put you for the next Squad because you suspended you being after that so I said okay not a problem I'm still waiting for spent to give me a call M so I just say myself what's the pointy me hanging around you know there's a younger generation coming through so I said you know I tap out now did you retire then C yeah yeah that's that's when I tapped out yeah okay for me there's no point there's no point like trying to stay around to try a Nick an England cup or what how old were you then uh 30 does it come a point for a player do you think where you feel like you feel like you have to prove yourself all the time you're and that can creep into at especially International level because generally you're doing well at your Club level then International manager listen Glenn would say that manager going you're in the next Squad and then you're not I think there is that there's come to a point in your career you go have to kind of toward proving yourself all over again is is there a bit of that when I was still going with England G you come to the come in as manager and obviously har had come through and um he was the main Striker then and I was there and I was still captain and I was like I don't really feel like I should be so I I pulled got and said listen minino coming in Manch United I we playing every week I just said I don't think it's right that you pick me in the squad said obviously I want to play but I'm not playing for me Club I don't think despite me being here so what age were you done when 30 maybe hard thing to say to somebody that that leave your best but I I always felt that if you're not playing for your Club you shouldn't be playing for your country so I went playing so I said you pick me as Captain I said it's recognized as well you you got to remember the levels as well with Wayne yeah I get it with Wayne being in there the discourse is always going to be like how's he in the squad I know but on one hand we say players about wanting to play for their country listen I'm not saying there that wrong with it when a players was playing for his country they played that many games to all of a sudden they to say you know you you know it's his decision to leave me out you know he pck he did pick me again though when I went back to Everton and then I retired them right didn't go back Co how did it end at United just talk us through that experience how it came yeah it was kind of like the same time before retired with England and I was saying myself I know I should have gotten the squad uh the World Cup squad that year and I was just saying myself like you need to go just play as many games as possible score as many goals as possible and force yourself in doing the squad I remember saying to GA look GA I want to play more games and that's when we were playing that one up front was that with rude and Skol off yeah or when when seber came in yeah how many games are you playing though call like were you like proper not in so what we' been doing we play play like for inance it's no disrespect a bolting on a SAT or whatever you'll be playing you can get yourself a brace or whatever and you knew we got Real Madrid midweek in the Champions out right you're not going to play and I'm like it was when you trying to trying to change the team from 442 into sort of like Roy seber and Sky wasn't it like a three and rude up front by himself and I was like no I need to play games I need to play gamees I just kept sing the manager look boss I need to play games he always kept saying me look you play games you play games but I'm like I'm 30 you know I want to play as many games as I can because don't get that that rule was like oh once you got to 30 leg areon you remember that one people signing new contracts at 32 for another 3 four years now yeah you know so it was I was in that position I kept saying to manager I want to play games I want I just need to move on to go and play games he kept saying to me no no no no you can stay as long as you want and then one day he just said to me Coy okay I know I know your your pride is everything for you and I've always said to your pride will kill you I know it will you know but what's a man without his pride and I just said myself he just said right I'll let you go I don't want to let you go but I'll let you go and that was it it's interesting because my my recollection of my United Career in terms of thinking about how we played so it was up to that point where Roode came and then after Roode left nothing to do with rude but that change that we tried to make to suit Europe in that period of three or four years I found to be the most difficult y we I think we don't we didn't win a Le we only one league in Four Seasons the style of play the patterns of a partnership up front could hit Strikers was gone completely and then actually came back with you with Louie yeah if you remember so in 2006 this was 2002 that would been yeah that's right C four years I remember the patterns just being like completely obscure to me overpassing too much sort of like not getting it into forwards feet no sort of sharpness no Counterattack that we always had and then it came back when you started playing with Louie and we had the Partnerships again and then Tas came in and we then went back to two up front I wonder if he'd hung around couple years whether actually we' have gone back to that you know what I mean with rude you could could you have played with rude cuz what was I could play with rude look I I love rude I'll be very honest I think rude was an unbelievable goal scorer you know but rude was very selfish to play with oh he was hard work to play with you know I mean rude was the individual your makeer run and by the time you look rout in exactly the same space so you try to S yourself what he L that one he played out wild purp a bit wider so we can get in the box back in the box clever he knows he the best clever a bit wide just Square for me yeah and he he was like that and people say oh you should have held about Co but I was like oh man I God pride pride is Pride's terrible where's the pride come from K that's where I've been brought up I mean I think my parents have both come from the caribbe and they came from the crib with nothing yeah and that's what they ever try instilling their kids to have pride in yourself I mean so you can CH you can change now don't he stuck in your ways forever it is I a chat with you later one a man to get you right on telling you exactly but we when I come in I always thought it was a pleasure of Cu obviously the last big thing he's done was win the treble in 99 and and the CL hadn't really had won the league for a few years so coming in I always thought there was a pressure of how do we emulate what as a striker what used you you and yor done that was what I looked at and with r that was difficult to have that as you say there it was difficult to have that partnership yeah that was always a pressure I felt and then obviously bit after that you we go on to um the preseason tours and yourself or your he might be there we're want to like like natally we want to leave our Legacy and want we want people to say oh these are better than what yor was so I always found that was can't easy said talk about position I know we've had discussions about the toughest position at United goalkeepers listen huge you need big personalities the spine your team blah blah blah but that goal score that's that Striker you look at all the great players yourselves included Canton is Mark Hughes the great goal score is rude scored big goals you need them Lads you need them Lads top end of the pitch if you haven't got that real top world class Strikers particularly at man united it's it's it's it's hard gone you think that's what's missing a little bit now when you say about like looking at the legacy of the club and do you think that's a little bit what it is like coming in do they want to emulate what went before you hope they'd Embrace that J the whole idea know we're talking about where man united are now it's chalk and cheese to back in the day it's you hope you Embrace that pressure like the L when you come to a club to be a goal scor man united it's not easy yeah people say you're going to get chances you have have to again missing chances have that bit of Bravery that courage but that um that's the difference that with players but again I hope you'd enjoy that pressure like you look enjoy you're going to that club W has touched on it as well I think for me personally you know obviously when when your time comes to an end and obviously people like w coming in the team to go away on tour and to have that conversation that interaction with you know for them that actually want to come out and do it it's like when I first moved to man united obviously so Bobby and people like that kid you can have that Convoy you want to take it all in that's changed now a lot of them look at you as to say when we were there like s to see more senior Lads then would push you and keep you on your toes where when when you left then we do that to the younger players now there's no one you know the younger players on man united I I worry about you about L you're a bit younger than me that do they understand do they embrace the history of the club you were around the place lad you going to towards Dennis P Robo did be looking at these Lads got you Bobby CH when we were there Robo coming towards the end when I was about you going yeah listen I'm I'm all years here I'm all years but now younger play maybe I'm not knocking all of them maybe they're not lovers of the game that much they're playing and they're good players but they didn't look back at ex players and go yeah listen I give me all the information I'd look maybe something man united have to look at in some as part of the restructure did you AR did you have an AR was any Lads around the place ex players not yeah Frank when we Frank mlto and Charlie George and all those guys are still around there you have a chat with him when you said law you you could I think that um when you look at where man united are now it wouldn't be something they should not look at because they the players because whatever we say about man united you have to understand that it's through the club what they've done what they've achieved and when you come into the club just like I'm sure it would be with with Liverpool you have to understand the history of what's going on so you can understand the levels because because ultimately that's why you want to be joining the club likeit yeah mean the level you're going to the place I was grown up in the '90s watching man united like in all what I was seeing and obviously being an Everton fan we weren't really going to win anything so my best way of having a go with Liverpool fans was Man United win I grew up watching him then the minute I knew manchest United would inting me I was like that's the only place I'm going everon way were you was ex players Everton obviously were brilliant in the 80s and it were were them players around the place so my man my utam manager was K Nai right so obviously was that great to plug into all these buys you yeah going into training got K Nai ala was there so we had a lot of the players Peter re was always around was a coach for a while was you have all MX players there and it's it's so important hist important I think leg like when we played for England like if you had the number 10 shirt it's like I've got Kelly Smith shirt like I need to do a proud and when we won it's like it's for everybody that's gone before like it should be a journey there shouldn't be any gaps in it so I think it's so important youed to England do you go into the women's Camp do you yeah all the time all the time everybody's still you love it you love going in and helping any of the young players yet yeah I think it's just like one big family really and it should be I think with Mel Mikel the training ground is open to any of the xros you can just could just go you could just literally turn up you could just turn up and you know what I mean obviously they know you bam you go in there you can have lunch you can watch from the side he's everybody can come into that I've heard about ax maybe apparently their Academy when they're having 11 the Els the underaged kids they get two or three the X players back just for example they get a striker back a midfielder and a center half whatever and you just watch the player in that position so you're just an ex player having a day back at the club you must go down to training and you just watch the midfielder and after 20 minutes it might stop a game and I'll just give feedback to the midfielder I forget the rest of the yeah imagine that Snippets information I could give a midfielder or you could give a striker whoever it might be should clubs maybe do that a bit more I don't know May I'm at United most days now obviously with me kids and I don't go in that building yeah I'm a bit like that when I go but would you want to or would you be invited or would you be to be fair that the new owners who've come in have obviously said come in anytime you want but I just know I just don't feel for me it's got to be a manager but imagine your chat yeah the manager I'm just saying but imagine you having a chat with a current United Striker just I don't mean a big debrief but just a 20-minute check on I watched again the weekend I just thought you were a bit isolated or you were G I imagine him that's better on any coaching lesson has to be I was going to ask to co about Rasmus hland who's coming this season he's obviously only one striker in the club he's still young he's 21 years of age he's to be fair alone up there on his own just talk to us a little bit about him in terms of one maybe advice in a more sort of a Guardian Way really because obviously it's not he's not the problem at Manchester United at this moment in time but he's been asked to do a big job which is I think that playing for Manchester United and goal is the is the hardest job in football but I think playing as a striker in that club is W goal goal goalkeeper yeah if you you're not you're not having that RN anyway no don't AR on that another week so talk about Rasmus H in terms of how he's done and what you think maybe a little bit of advice how he can improve because you improve your game so much from joining United to obviously the point where he left I think especially watching him again on Saturday um because because the game's changed so much he has an obsession and want to fight the center half don't need to not in a modern day game you know back in the days when you got Sparky yeah that's totally different you know but now he has this big Obsession I've got to fight him I've got to know where he is I've got to have a little tussle with him and then we can go from there he's fighting and tussling so much he doesn't get hold the ball yeah you know just play freely get hold the ball so what comes to the side of a defender or because in the the way the game's played now yeah you can do that all day long because you're Nick a foul you know so when you hustling fighting whatever what Center for do you see play like play like that now in the Premier League is he getting good service do you think is he service the service he gets so service is is poor but you know what makes even harder as well you've already touched them when you play one up front if the service is not bang on yeah as a center forward what you do so yeah he's chasing a lot of loss causes because the service is not very good you know but then for me personally you got to get yourself in a good position to where by right I can actually get old the board one one up front actually I can't make the rund down and channel every time because it's only me and I just kill myself after 20 minutes so as a fullback you got to start demanding the ball where you want it not where he wants to put it because he's under pressure because the fullback should never be under pressure to about he can't deliver you a good ball I think it's it's one up front as well but man united very rarely cross the ball now yeah wide play for the number nine if you're up front on your own the chances you get is making little time runs to get across someone now it's not coming in the boxing espe the white players the don't know what they're going to do and the same thing as well when you look you know when you when you're playing when you're playing a game and say you haven't scored for a couple of games as well and then you're playing in a team like the United side what I watch now even when he shows he doesn't get you know when you try to get a couple of touches just to build yourself into the game nothing like you mentioned there they don't cross the ball into the box you see him making moves you see him making moves someone like Garo who is somebody he's not even looking he's looking to shoot all the time you're not seeing a lot of people trying to bounce off of him and stuff and you think to yourself you see him do stuff you see him try to and you think okay if they recogniz that might have been a good move for him but I think his confidence is getting worse in respects of not getting it not getting the chances so then when it does come he's anxious you saw him the other day he got a brilliant chance unfortunately he slipped and you know what I look at I feel really sorry for him because he does not get enough Supply and that's why you know when he when he does just enjoy it yeah you know cuz no one can lump it on him and say oh blah blah enjoy it you get all the ball you know enjoy the ball do you know when you speak about the crossing of the ball when news play like did you know kind of where the cross was going to come cuz it's a Tau thing isn't it you know what I mean it's not whacking the ball the Box Beckham I I don't GS Beck GS 100% these people are not looking to Twist and Turn you know what I mean I I knew with Beck I dropped my shoulder make a run I know straight away it's coming bro gigy I know I could open myself up and he Lo to fade it straight into so I already knew you know by line crosses from deeper with Becks and that and that's what that's what made M and yor or Tedd and knowly job a lot e cuz you're no guaranteed yeah when the ball's coming in you know what's good about that as well though ro oh yeah you know what's good about that as well is that being able to be a striker like we talking about hland being able to be a striker knowing that you know what I mean I might it might not be going well for me but if I make the right move in the box that Ball's coming in at least two three times in the half he does he doesn't have that RAF ran just announced that he's leaving Manchester United today that's a strange time it feels like for him to announce it yeah but it was it was under his cont wasn't it yeah but it's just strange time with a couple of weeks ago in the season I trying to give him a bit of respect by announcing and else maybe but is he going to be fit for the cut final as well though I don't know I'm sure he will [Music] be on this show of stick to football we've been working with better help life does move fast things change and if you're having a bad day or a bad time it really just sometimes help to go and get therapy and just take stock of things and get some support that happened to me back in 20 000 after the enormous high of winning a treble within six months I was playing terribly I'd given away two goals uh in a world Club Championship and had had a a relationship built a breakup of about seven years and those six or eight sessions that I had with that therapist psychologist back at that time those coping mechanisms I still use to this day visit betterhelp.com sstf today to get 10% off your first month that's betterhelp hp.com sstf [Music] Cole just talked to us a little bit about the illness that you had obviously in your post football career just to sort of how that's been yeah you know it's I'm not going to lie it's been tough I think as as I've got older and I'm start to understand it a lot more it gets a little bit easier but when I first went down with it was like okay here we go let's crack on let's just go to the gym and continue to do what I was doing before and then like do actually saying you know you can't actually just work it off it's not an injury in that but mentality is man up that's the mentality man out get on with it you do what you got to do so when when I did finally get my head man it hit me really hard to know that my life's not going to be the same anymore there's things that I want to do that I can't do just for people that don't know Co tell us about what it is and actually sort of how I had I had a kidney transplant and when when you obviously you have have kidney illness it's fatigue it's a fatigue illness so you're constantly tired you also so that I said me believing that I could still do it realized that before I my transport I could have been sleeping what 10 11 hours of the day you I so just so tired and I said once I took it on board and grasp it a little bit Yeah mentally it did mess me because I've been an elite Sportsman all my life basically and then all of a sudden someone says you're right Mr Cole at best you can pot around the garden I'm like no I don't do pot of garden I got to do it full Pelt so just trying to understand that was was hard hard work but the ups and downs the medication all those kind of things some days you're good some days you're bad some days you can't get out of bed but I just got to man up and get on with it I know we we shouldn't say man up but I brought I've been brought up in that culture you know I don't that's going to be Ono call yeah for Life yeah for life you got the donut did you you got the donor yeah yeah yeah yeah my nephew I'm got uh six need to come out to S years in with my kidy now yeah so yeah I said there good and bad days that the medic for me is the hardest thing because medication is what it is it messes with your whole body is that for life you got take yeah for life I'm for life now yeah yeah how's your nephew was he or was he my nephew I remember when I had the transplant let me out about a week and he had to stay in he was in for about two weeks cuz he felt ill right so where took the kidney out of him he got uh caught with gas I mean he was struggling you know so yeah I was like oh my God there we go in fact I remember saying to the surgeons I would go back Ill now for him yeah to get out how old was your nephew to make that decision cuz that's incredible yeah he was young he was 28 wow yeah he was 28 so I can't even get into the the the vicinity of how you how you dealt with that that you know yeah like I said at the start of course it's it's tough and then I went for a lot of other nonsense as well at that time and mentally when when you start seeing things like all falling apart mentally it does mess with you I'm not going to say oh no it didn't it was really really tough but when you start working out and start putting things together and you got good people around you a lot of people say see you later and there a lot of people say puff the chest out and say look I'm here for you yeah once I sorted that out and mentally I start to get my head right yeah I've it's become a little bit easier but I'm not going to sit and say I'm better because I'm never going to be better but I accept it I accept that the is going to be days when I call it a Kidney Day When my kidney says well my body says to me it's not that day today me man it's tough and there days when I'll say yeah I feel good today well you look great thank you stuff always look great to be honest with you used to spend about two hours on his regime after the Train on in the training room after the honestly you should have followed and finally you've got your boy here today come come in come on in you come another goal scorer another goal scorer here he is a striker how's it going bro big man look at the size of this man this is what you want Coy bro you bro out a proper six4 man is he tough on you from a caution point of view or does he just let you get on with it he wasn't so much when I was younger yeah I think now yeah more so but I've accepted that because I I know what he is MHM I know how he was brought up so now I actually want it right and there's days where I don't need it but he gives it me and probably day we didn't speak for a bit after it just got Lon for four days but I knew why and I needed it and I went back at him and it was just it's one of them but I I know why CU you expect a certain standard and if I don't hit it then it's funny I the same with sha D at the same we you go and you see things and you think and then you say something and there's nothing wrong with a friction because like when when when when they were younger I don't know if you don't with Devonte I never got involved in anything apart from saying listen do if you want to a high level do not give the ball away and pass to all your teammates you know what I mean don't you not pass to all your teammates you know and that's the only thing I used to say to me when you pick them up and then as they got older now you wanted to start and then they start you starting to see aptitude you start to say right you're going to need to be tighter on this you're going to need to be better on that and then without forcing it into them because it that puts them off and you don't want to hear from your dad yeah yeah for sure but what was it like what would what would you have seen what did you say to him what would that be specifically about what game you played in what you what would you said no I think when when you play center forward and like my son does you always want to try and see yourself in I want to see myself in him yeah yeah what you do yeah and the way I play the game like there's some things that I'm doing I'm turn around say myself you shouldn't be doing it but I'm going to do it anyway you know and when I don't see it from him I'm like no I can't let him get away with it you know because I I don't I didn't mind you know putting my foot in every now and then and all that kind of stuff when I see like Cent kicking I'm like no that's not happening there you know because that feisty part of me comes out me I'm like saying well you got to do this you got to do that yeah Dad well XYZ I'm like I don't see it that way yeah I mean I I see it a totally different way different character man yeah yeah I know that I know that and I look at him game changed as well so game now is so different you looking at him thinking dinosaur what's he going on about a little bit are you just think completely different yeah do you follow with managers no have you follow with yeah it's funny because like you your your calm demeanor that's your personality is it and it's come it's obviously come through obviously when he's younger he's in a he's in a cool calm environment that's why probably when we were younger we're in this kind of aggressive half to J so you want that like you see like for instance I see people kicking sha Bradley all the time thinking come on man you know what I mean but then they just said no I'm cool with that I don't need to worry about that until it actually makes you go somewhere you think right okay yeah yeah than that just my boy now I can't walk past him without some punch me it's just got aggression in it's just it's probably middle in my character what I was and so yeah what's the best thing about having him as your dad and what's the most difficult thing about having him as your dad best thing I think I think growing up I think he probably doesn't know that I've watched all his tapes the videos like cassette tapes you so I've watched it all so like I love football probably in a different way where it's I watched all of that growing up so now when I see it I mean even I watch your podcast I watch all the five ones so I love it in that way and that's because I was raised in it so I think the best thing for me is I've seen football from a different level so now when I'm in it it doesn't really phase me in that way I just feel like he's giv me all the tools and then probably the worst thing is people because of who he is they expect so much because but I feel like with two different people so I don't put that pressure on me but everyone else puts it on so it's they see it through like their vision is a bit tinted so I thought they saw me for me I'd be seen completely different so I think that's that's probably the worst thing but people don't really understand that and they just see my dad they expect the same you're doing well that yeah you're doing well yourself never forget how difficult it is to become a professional football player and play at the level that you're at striker there's only how many Strikers are there in League football or in professional football you think three or four in every Club there's clubs there like 300 Strikers in the country and there's millions of kids everyone wants to be a striker I want to be a striker yeah but then you look at you look at this the way Strikers are going now we're just talking about money they got all the money don't unit got one you know Aral we've got a different player playing as a striker you know You' seeing teams who haven't really got an out out or got a couple of Strikers it's an unbelievable position if you can get it right it's you know are your sons Strikers as well matter how your kids have ended up being youngest more of a ball player me second one yeah did you ever a follow with Nev did you ever a follow with Nev I disagreement Jes a question just me and like Ro saying that did you fall did you Ser everyone makes everyone makes out here that I fell out with everybody yeah but yet to turn around and say yeah I never fell out of you not yet we've never fall time time we' had cross words we laugh and joke it off but I don't actually fall out with people I mean because everyone says is really quiet and then NE says but you don't have C thinking I'm going to kill you love you I kill you a serious wrestling face that's all it is that's a beautiful place stick to football oh thanks so much that's brilant thank you so much who's the better finisher you more natural I'm serious I'm so happy honestly me who's the better finisher all of you who's the most natural finisher what is a natural yeah that's what I'm saying people say a natural because I tell a question I remember I think your goal maybe your first goal against Newcastle at Old Trafford the one where it came across the right foot it was the right foot that went back in there that that is like yeah but you forget I scored I scored that game as well but no one remembers that Phil picked me up Phil Neville I think he was Pi up baby rememb your I us you my team you know me n hor man got my best goals against ever Abus he's a darling of the nation he's a horrible NY bastard when he plays you know what I mean [Music] what
