An update on our French farmhouse kitchen renovation

Bono everyone welcome back to another video both of our parents were visiting this week and so we decided to celebrate Father's Day by treating our fathers to a really nice lunch so my mom and I spent the entire morning cooking which we both really really love and we had such a wonderful morning just taking our time to prepare all the food and we were chatting about my grandmother and my grandparents my father's parents had a huge vegetable garden and my grandmother had owned a restaurant before and every summer they would always come bring us all these wonderful fresh vegetables and while my mom and I were preparing the peas and the sweet peas we were remembering how much we hated this back in the day when we felt we didn't have time for this well mom felt she didn't have time for this and I must have been only like six or S and just thought it was so much work but I also do remember really enjoying spending time in the kitchen with my mom and my grandmother is here vegetable bches yeah for so see get over what you have bought oh by [Music] and as Mom and I were getting the most delicious and amazing dishes out of this what we call the crappy old kitchen I was thinking to myself this is the sixth year that we're using this kitchen and I told myself that last year that would be the last year I kept telling to myself and to my boys this is the last year we'll be using this kitchen next summer dad will have finished our new kitchen but that is still not entirely done and I am getting a little bit sentimental about this crappy old kitchen because it has really served us very well it allows me to cook for guests it allows me to cook for my family it allows me to cook for all of our friends and family who come and visit and somehow it just has this really cute little vibe to it I have to say though that the building were for our new kitchen are really progressing it is really starting to come together and I can't wait to share a little more on that later in this video [Music] [Music] [Music] Je [Music] [Music] that's [Music] [Music] [Music] spee spee we are finally getting to the final stages of getting our kitchen finished I'm going to paint all the doors and the windows and Olaf has started making the shelves for the velier the cabinet that we're creating for all of my Brant plates and bowls and Dish wear [Music] we are using Pinewood for the shelves and I'm staining them with what's called broa in French I think the translation would be Walnut stain or maybe even Walnut ink and it's actually made from I don't know if you've ever seen this I had never seen that before but we have a walnut tree in our garden and I know walnuts like the brown shell that they're in but actually when they grow on the tree they have another shell that is green on them and when that dries even we because we have them on our Terrace and you touch it your hands are all brown so there is a a liquid in there that's that stains so you use this to stain any wood that you want to stain a little darker so we're staining all the shelves and putting them in and while they dry mom and I are washing all of my beautiful Brant we've lived here for a little over 5 years and I've spent the past 5 years searching for ter defir Ironstone transferware in blue and I've had a few very very lucky finds and I am so happy that I finally have a place where I can really properly display all of this so that we'll use it a lot more because ever since we're you know I found this maybe 3 years ago but it's been moving around the house because we keep doing our building work so the kitchen's never finished so I am so happy to see this all in this beautiful cabinet now so it's during moments like these that I'm so grateful that we are crazy enough to take on these crazy projects I don't know if you remember we found these well they're not even doors they're actually windows they're old windows and we found them locally here via a website so we picked them up and I have spent days sanding them taking the glass out trying to strip them from from the paint and then Olaf spent a lot of time installing these in this cabinet that we built ourselves but I think sometimes you don't know up front how much work something is actually going to take and sometimes it's better because maybe you wouldn't have done a lot of the projects that we've actually done for this house if it would have known up front how much work it would be but we do really have I think a very personal style now and a very personal house with items that we've sort with so much love and that we've installed with so much love and it is really turning into our dream home because of that so I am really happy with how this turned out I do still need to clean and spray paint the hardware and we have a couple of other finishes we need to do before it's entirely finished but this kitchen is still one big work in progress but we are getting there one step at a time these I just pulled out of the ground by the side of the road last year and put them in they were a little sad looking last year but they look really good now they're big though and I want to put them in there see if that works the farm field looks pretty messy because the farmer has still not hay and it's because we keep getting rain it's such an unusual year but the abundance of wild flowers is crazy and I know noticed there was lots of yo growing here already as you can see and there is lots in the farm field as well right here and I think he will not wait much longer because they're predicting dry and warm days so I am quite sure that he's going to cut all this this week and I want to pull those out and plant them and see if I can make that work again just like I did last year for just to give you an idea I paid pretty big money for these when I was in the Netherlands and uh I think in March or something I don't even remember when I was there no in April I bought these at the Garden Center in the Netherlands and the Netherlands are known for having really nice quality plant plants and I bought these but then pink ones because I never really see pink ones here and I planted them in my garden I think I'm going to put these with them because I want a really nice full bed of these next year cuz I don't think these will survive when I plant them there but we'll see it worked last year so we have all the time in the world to see how this turns out these are stuck somehow oh boy there we go oh that's got a real B before I kill everything oh boy see I lost it and this is something else okay so as you can see here these are the ones that I bought in Netherlands and they are pink for for I think we've just been just in time cuz it looks like our farmer friend John Lou is going to cut the grass and start haying finally that feels so late in the year there he goes [Music] and Olaf and I were just saying all the birds of prey are showing up immediately because they know all of the mice and other little animals that were hidden in The Tall Grass will have nowhere to hide after this so you always see them show up immediately afterwards there he go there he is to go find things and food here there's another one I It's A Feast for them after this for oh oh yeah oh as you can see there is still plenty to do in the kitchen and I hope to share
