(rock music) - Hey, I'm Alex Honnold,
and this is my pimp van. Come check it out. (rock music) So I lived in my last van for nine years, I put like 200,000 miles on it, or a little bit less than that. Yeah, basically I've lived
in a van for a decade now. And so, having this van and
being able to stand in it and train in it and have
refrigerated food and all that, it's a pretty big step up
after 10 years of living like all bent over inside my car. I don't think van life is
particularly appealing. You know, it's not like
I love living in a car, but I love living in all these places, like, I love being in
Yosemite, I love being, basically wherever the weather is good. I love being able to follow
good conditions all over, and be relatively comfortable as I do it. And so that I've pretty much just, just I've just stayed living in a car. Or, in this case, like a really nice van. The thing I love about this van is getting in my nice, warm bed. It's so comfy. I mean, do I even really need to explain why the van is so nice
when I'm in this comfy bed? (rock music) This is my urinal. It's very convenient, very accessible. Very reusable. I dunno, I mean, there's
not that much to say, like, people find it novel
to be peeing in a bottle, but, it's like, pretty freakin' normal when you do it all the time. It's always within reach. If I could like,
miraculously teleport a house from place to place, I'd
prefer to live in a nice, comfortable house or something, I suppose. Though honestly, I mean, the
van actually is kind of nice. I like having everything
within arm's reach. 'Cause like, when I stay in a hotel room, sometimes you get put up in
a really classy hotel room and it's like, really big, and
you have to walk quite a ways to the bathroom, and you're just like, man, I wish I had my bottle. It's like, who wants to walk
all the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night
when you could just lean over, grab your bottle, and just go. (rock music) My friend Mason built out my
van and he's like an artist. I mean, he even etched the side of El Cap into the side of my door. He's an artist, he's a craftsman. My cupboards all latch with
these cool little cam lobes. And the handles are all extra cam lobes from the Black Diamond factory. It's kinda fun. And the metal grating is
supposedly the tops to ice screws, it's also just like, scrap metal from the
Black Diamond factory. Which is kind of cool. (rock music) So this is my storage closet. My trunk, where I have all kinds of gear. I mean, one of the
challenges of being a climber is just all the different
types of gear you have. And I mean, I have
thousands of feet of rope, I have a pair of skis, I have
two pairs of skis, actually. And then, tons of climbing
shoes, climbing hardware. And then my camping gear,
sleeping bags, tents, just all kinds of stuff so
that you're pretty much ready for whatever kind of adventure
you wind up getting into. Concluding thoughts, you
know, I mean, living in a car totally cool, everyone should do it. Very low overhead, very easy, I mean it's funny when
you think how much people spend on rent, and then how
much less it is to live in a car you're like I dunno, it's
not a bad way to live. I think people will get used to it. And it's sort of also,
it's cleansing in a way. You realize how much less stuff you need. People are like oh, you
don't shower everyday? And you're like, you definitely don't need to shower every day, you're like, pretty-- Although right now I look
like I need a shower, so it's not the best time,
not the best example. But, you know, living in
a car sort of reminds you that you don't really need
that much to be totally content and to live a fulfilling
life, and to be happy.
