ladies and gentlemen miss marlena dietrich [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] i get no kick pump champagne the alcohol doesn't thrill me at all so tell me why should it be true [Music] i think that smoking's insane i think that if i take even one with it boys and i get a kick [Music] out of you i get a kick every time i see you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you might decide to adore me [Music] i get no kick in a plane flying to hide with a guy in the sky is my ideal nothing to do i got a kick [Music] i get a kick [Music] out of you i'm gonna sing for you a few songs for my records and a few songs for my films but first i would like to sing for you the song that brought me into films i was a student in a theater school in europe when a very famous american film director mr joseph von sternberg came over there to make a film the name of the film the blue angel [Applause] he had looked at all the actresses and couldn't find the one he wanted for the part and finally looked at the students and one day i received a call to come and make a test for the part and i was told to bring along a very naughty song well i was so sure that i was never going to get the part that i went there without the naughty song but the director had great patience with me and he said you know you had to sing a song for this test and i said yes i know but which one and he said well as long as you didn't bring a naughty song sing any song you like and i said i like american songs and he said all right sing an american song and here's the song that brought me into films [Music] you are the queen in my coffee [Music] you're the saltine mice you will always be my necessity i'll be lost without you you're the starch in my colors and much [Music] and each dovetail you know each snowman but this is my own way you're the same in my love boats you're the captain and crew you will always be my necessity i'll be lost without you [Music] [Music] as you all know i did get the part and surely not because i sang that song so well and when the film was finished i was asked to come to hollywood to make more films now that thought did not intrigue me very much because when you're a student in a theater school you have quite different names but one thought did intrigue me very very much and that was to go to america i did not know america but i knew the songs and judging by the words of those songs i thought the americans must be the most romantic nation in the world there was one song in particular that gave me the idea and gave me the longing [Music] to go to america when whipper will score [Music] and evening is love i hurried you my heaven i turn to the right a little white will lead [Music] [Applause] [Music] little nest that nestles where the roses just molly and me you'll see a smiling face a fireplace [Music] the littleness that nestles where the roses are just molly and me [Music] heaven [Music] [Music] when i was in hollywood and great songwriters sat down to write songs for me and i was waiting i was waiting for those beautiful romantic songs here's the typical song written for me for one of my hollywood films [Music] go see what the boys in the background [Music] [Music] and when i die don't spend my money on flowers and my picture in a frame i just see what the world then the background tell them my son tell them and tell them i died and when i died [Music] tell them myself [Music] [Applause] [Music] and when i die pay the preacher for speaking of my glory and my fame just see what the ones tell them my sign [Applause] [Music] the same [Applause] and most of the songs i sang in my hollywood films were like that so i went to england i tried it there here i made a film for mr hitchcock the film was called stage fright and the song by cole porter the laziest girl in town it's not good i shouldn't [Music] not because i wouldn't and you know not because i couldn't simply recover and the lazy as again [Music] [Applause] [Music] my poor heart is they come [Applause] to bring home the bacon i'm alone and forsaken simply because [Music] though i'm more than willing to learn how these girls get money to burn every proposition i turn down [Music] and you know not cause i couldn't simply because i'm the laziest girl in town nothing ever worries me nothing ever hurries me [Music] i take pleasure leisurely even when i kiss when i kiss they want some more and wanting more becomes a ball it isn't worth the fighting for [Music] you it's not cause i couldn't it's simply because i'm the laziest the laziest i'm just amazing [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] it isn't by chance i happen to be the fam fatale the joseph barry over the noise the chalk and the smoke i'm good for love a drink or a joke i walk in a room a party or ball come sit over here somebody will call a drink for the beauty a drink for us all but how many times i stop and they called [Music] home that we walked lying in we used to play while the rounds were yesterday when the world was young [Music] wherever i go they mention my name and that in itself is some sort of fame come by for a drink we're having a game wherever i go i'm glad that i came the talk is quite game the company's fight there's a laughter and lights and glamour and wine and [Music] but sometimes my eyes see a different shine oh the arbor dress sunlit memories looking at the sky till the stars were strong when the world was young only lost july [Music] when the world was younger [Music] [Applause] here's the very first song i ever sang or ever recorded and i have to sing it in the original language because no english lyrics were ever written for it but i tell you what it's about it's very simple as a girl on the telephone calling her man asking him to come over if he's not free in the evening the afternoon will do johnny [Applause] [Music] finish [Music] foreign [Music] um [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Music] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Music] stuck [Music] [Applause] [Music] church [Music] now here's an old american folk song go away from my window [Music] go away from my window go away from my door going way away from my bedside and bother me no more and bother me no more [Music] i'll give you back your letters [Music] i'll give you back your ring but i'll never forget my own true life as the longest [Music] go and tell all your brothers tell all your sisters too that the reason why my heart is broke is on account of you on account [Music] that you're the one i really did love best i really [Music] go away from my window go away from my door go away way way for my bedside and bother me no more [Music] don't bother me no more me [Music] so [Applause] which became a beautiful love song in the english translation i ought to sing it as a love song it is a love song sung to a child [Music] [Applause] [Music] to give you a heart a song to sing and then a kiss but more than this i wish you loved [Music] i wish you helped and more than wealth i wish you loved my loving heart and i agree now is the time to let you be so with my best my very best i set you free i wish you shall walk from the storm a cozy fire to keep you warm but most of all when snowflakes fall i wish now's the time to let you be so with my best my very best i set you free i wish from the storm a cozy fire to keep you warm but most of all when snowflakes fall i wish you loved i wish i wish [Music] i wish [Applause] a song by charles merriwood a soldier coming home after the war [Music] white grass beneath the stones that once was my home bleach bones nothing more of a wife i adored the cradle i made no more rocks by little babe the war's over [Music] seems we [Music] white won't once was green [Music] white stones once housed a dream [Music] me and the mary young and brave but now the future yes i see lonely through my tears the war's over seems we won [Music] that one this was my home [Music] oh why mary did you pray god should save me for this day the queen [Music] seems we won hurry the war's over seems we won [Music] [Applause] [Music] now here's a song i brought back from australia the home of the boomerang this one is called boomerang baby [Music] fly away [Music] [Music] if you fly away from me you'll fly back my bum around baby it doesn't matter if you go [Music] [Music] bye [Music] hello there you're back already it was a short trip huh baby fly away fly away fly wait for me [Music] if you fly away from me [Music] my [Music] um [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] a [Music] [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] we
