ah what internet world i'll start by saying don't try anything you see here at home this for educational purposes only um if you've been following me on bit shoot which you should if you're not subscribed on bit shoot please go and subscribe because i could post pretty much anything there and not have to worry about getting taken down like i do here on youtube okay with that said uh and in the past over a bit shoot i made a video using some of the homemade ammonium hydroxide uh in order to make ammonium nitrate using this o3 generator ozone generator so i get to thinking if you got some really cheap ammonia from the store like this was only like three bucks i don't think it's very concentrated like has much in it i look at the safety data sheet okay and all i get in the safety data sheet is concentrated concentrated and you know most people that have anything to do with chemistry know that when you say concentrated it means something very specific it doesn't just mean that they dumped some stuff in there and voila good to go and how cheap this was there's no way this is concentrated because if this was a gallon of concentrated ammonia it would be around forty dollars prior to like say the shipping or something this was only three dollars at the store so i'm going to guess this is under 10 by a lot so anyway i just wanted to see how and i don't have the what do you call it burettes or whatever to do the titration right now so i'm i'm not going to try to do it that way first but let's do an experiment um and before i go too far i had a couple people asking me what i used for uh ozone generator uh these are made for i believe cleaning things like big spas or pools or water pipes and things like that for bacteria infections and of course it's a regular fish tank pump but we i should be using two not one so anyway so what we're going to do is we're going to bubble some o3 through this super cheap ammonia here and find out how much ammonium nitrate we get out of it it's probably going to take a week or more and what i will do is there are two ways you can really do this and one is to fight if to find out how if it's depleted of ammonia and it's been turned into the nitrate is one uh it won't freeze easily until it's all been used up once the ammonia is used up it'll freeze easily otherwise if it's around 10 or a little less which i don't believe it is it won't freeze until like 98 degrees negative fahrenheit so it's pretty darn cold and the other way you can do it is you can always just do a ph strip over the top to see if there's still ammonia coming off it basically by smell if it freezes or by testing for the ph you can tell how much ammonia is gone you're never going to use all of the ammonia out of it doing it this way i don't know why but i just discovered that you will not and uh so what we're going to do here brand new i'm going to dump a little bit uh from there into here because i'm afraid the bubbling will just make it splatter everywhere and ammonia stinks so we're going to turn a fan on and this is going to take about a week so let's get a little bit of that into this other jug we don't want much out just enough so the bubbling doesn't cause a problem then we got a piece of line here fish tank line um a lot of minutes we got a piece of glass tube that'll help hold this in there let's go like that we'll put it through and we turn this on it's good it's not coming out it's not bubbling out you'll eventually start to see what looks like white smoke coming off it which is kind of interesting but it takes a minute for that to happen but we'll be back and i would guess around a week when we've used up most of the ammonia and paired it with the o3 and nitrogen making ammonium nitrate see you then just as i turned it off see the steam they started making the uh mysterious smoke remember always do stuff like this in a very well ventilated area ammonia is stinky and very corrosive okay uh i misspoke with talking about the freezing point i was using uh ms ds safety data sheets uh to try to get the information and they they weren't even giving me the concentration of the you know ammonium hydroxide i was looking at and this place here should be a lot more trustworthy as far as uh you know data on the ammonium hydroxide and what it's good for so here we got freezing point in solutions and so on so around ten percent uh rather yeah around ten percent which would be just just under ten percent would be around what is that like 17 f 17 degrees fahrenheit negative 8.1 degrees celsius okay and then if you go all the way up to concentrated which is eight uh 28 to 30 percent that's where you would get the uh negative 90 somewhat degrees fahrenheit freezing point okay so just figured i'd clear that up real quick okay so i brought it's been a full two weeks as of today i brought the experiment inside and the old stone foundation seller and uh i added an extra pump to it and some stones to try to uh speed it up because after about a week the ph really hadn't changed any but uh after about a week the ammonia in solution did get low enough so that with it being you know around zero outside it started slushing you know without heat so i brought it in here i added two of those pumps and then i had a splitter of the same kind like you can see right there but on the other side here with two bubbler stones in there well the ozone ate the uh uh tee that hooks they hook the two bubbler stones together so i'm gonna have to find another t or another way to hook up the uh the thing and uh hold on a second here darn ph strips i don't have a i don't have my camera mount down here tear this in half so as you can see the ph strip there we'll put a little put a little uh the solution on it you can see that it is still very alkali here's the thing about ammonium hydroxide though it doesn't change much in ph from being fairly concentrated all the way down to being like one percent or less so that doesn't surprise me but it did drop the amount of ammonium um hydroxide enough so that it was slushing outside at zero um so that's why it came in again but if you take uh the other half of the ph paper here i wonder if i can wonder if i can show some of these tripping over [ __ ] if i can show some of the acidity that was still coming out of it because just to show you that it is indeed making it is indeed making ozone and small amounts of nitric acid as they all do so yeah i gotta fix it and let it run longer or maybe i'll just boil it down we'll be back okay so here we are six weeks later yes you heard right six weeks later it's a very slow process um this isn't totally neutral either or slightly acidic like it should be it's we got it down to about a ph of eight which isn't real great which means there's still a small amount of ammonia left in there only by dark side not much at all nothing it took a lot longer than i thought it [Music] would see before it was outright black now it's a green color the stuff is destroying these stones as well as what appears to be some ammonium nitrate built up on the outside so this may be ammonium nitrate don't know we'll have to see if it's water soluble and how much is actually in there because i i doubt we've got the saturation if you get what i'm saying i think it's probably a diluted mix but we'll see i'm going to save this off to the side because i don't want it to uh i don't want it to get destroyed i'm going to rinse this off i think i should probably filter this actually i'm going to need this to filter brand new my girlfriend bought a bunch of these for me this is going to take forever to boil this down but in the meantime [Music] oh yes i don't have my funnel out here we got white crystals in the bottom of this so i'm going to filter this and uh run a little water through just to see if that stuff will dissolve or if it's some other byproduct that i was unaware of so i'll have to go grab my file and some filters i'll be right back [Music] okay while i'm filtering this i'm heating i've got a stir bar in there try to stop it from bumping um what i'm going to try to do in the meantime what we're filtering is i want to see if i can't dissolve some of this off in it often this bubbler stone and see if it's our product or if that's a part of the stone coming apart and if it dissolves i'll add it to this when i boil it it's amazing how long it actually took for this stuff to process and if you almost can't smell any ammonia left at all but boy six weeks that's an awful long time very slow process so we're gonna see if this will dissolve or not it looks like it kind of is but what we're going to do is we're going to finish filtering this to make sure i got no crud from the bottom here and then i'm going to boil this down until we get you know around 500 or 1000 milliliters once i get down there i'm going to uh shift it over to my trusty toolbox here which has light bulbs in the bottom of it and this glass pan to finish evaporating and drying it off so we will be back after this is boiled down this will take a very long time [Music] about a third of the way down and it's already pretty late at night but yeah i was noticing that i don't believe that uh that is definitely not ammonium nitrate on the surface of my stone here so we were probably wasting a lot of um of the uh o3 by burning the stone in fact it made the stone all soft it's white in the middle yeah so the six weeks to do what i did may have actually been lengthened by using the silicone soft that is may have actually been lengthened by using a bubbler stone not shortened we may have actually used most of our o3 on on converting this diffuser stone into something different so yeah if you ever uh do try this don't use a fish tank diffuser stones use something that's lab safe you know that's good for acid and alkali which is kind of tricky because it'll encounter both in this reaction well here we are it's the following day we're probably down to about 250 to 300 milliliters i got my uh i shut it off during the night because i didn't want to stay up all night and do it didn't have enough time um i got my tool box it has two light bulbs in it and my bread tray it's all up to temperature yet so when i pour this in here and do it real slow so this doesn't crack and explode hopefully but we'll put it in here until all the water is totally gone and uh we'll cover it with these it's really windy out just to try to keep dirt and dust out of it now here's something i kept forgetting to mention with the store-bought ammonia and store-bought ureas and [ __ ] like that i was reading that they put something in some of it not all of it to stop you from being able to nitrate it or maybe from nitrating naturally on its own so that could be that could have helped stop our reaction from going forward really well so that if we get up with a really low yield which we don't know really because we don't know what the concentration was then that would be a good reason for that but we don't we really don't know in fact i actually heard that they sometimes um use a citric acid for that small amount don't know if that's proven on it but so here we are we're gonna pour this in here really slow i don't want to do this fast because it's possible that we can crack the pan that i have in here which would just really suck because that would destroy our entire experiment so i'm just gonna pour it in slow let me turn this off [Music] let the glass come up the temperature and this stuff cool down it's a really cool day here it's friggin windy as heck too which tends to get all kinds of little dirt specs in the stuff as i make it talk about frustrating well we will be back when this is completely evaporated this is also how i purify hydrogen peroxide too same system works pretty good old tool blocks whole cut in the top and a glass bread pan after stuff that's sensitive to light you just put aluminum foil behind it obviously without holes well we'll be back when this is done okay so here we are we're finally done just gonna weigh it up figure out what we got hopefully the camera can see this we don't know what we got here but remember that was like almost six weeks this here was the same brand right same brand of ammonia i used same machine but that's three days look how yucky that looks too it's brown but this bottle was like years and years old it was only half a bottle so i did this before we did this experiment i just wanted to see you know how much i could produce in a short period so basically with this it was three day run we basically got three grams per day let's see if we increase that or not we would have we would have to have 42 grams or more here for that to work out here okay and keep in mind that we would never have had to go that long i don't believe if i had just gone with a straight hose or a different bubbler because that bubbler destroyed a lot of the o3 the ozone oh and one more thing yes i'm in the house here and i see people doing this a lot if you're going to make energetics don't do it in your house don't store in your house don't mess with any house that's federally illegal and i see a lot of people doing it this is not this is not considered an explosive it's just ammonium nitrate all right so let's get this out of the way let's see what we got toolbox is not too hot to touch all right i got some cups around here somewhere so you know you can obviously still buy ammonium nitrate so this is kind of a real pain in the butt long way around doing it but let's say you live in a country that you can't buy any nitrates whatsoever then this would be worth doing otherwise like here in america you don't need to do it but i mean you can use this to make nitric acid and all kinds of other stuff so if you're in a place where you cannot get nitrates period this might be your only option we're not going to get a really good weight because i mean i've been going through stirring and chopping so there's some still stuck to the tray we're just going to ignore that and weigh the majority of what we got that stuff this stuff looks really pure too i mean this bucket is brilliant white let's see what we got wow i mean it's not a lot but it's more than i expected we have 53.1 grams so six weeks with a three dollar bottle of ammonia i'm pretty sure i could have cut that time in half if we had just used a different bubble stone so very very pure nice well thanks for watching
