Amish Gather for Last Time Before Prison

an Amish community in Ohio held its end of school celebration early so that family members could have a last chance to spend time together four women and one man go to prison on Friday following nine other Amish people already there we didn't do it for hate crime or for for kidnapping or anything it's more just a family dispute the Amish men and women were sentenced for forcibly cutting the hair and beards of their fellow Amish men and women married Amish men don't cut their beards and women don't cut their hair the Amish also don't drive cars or fly in planes that's why members of the community say the federal government's decision to sentence the men and women to prisons in several different states is an unfair burden I never dreamed I'd get a plane ride but it's just about too far for one driver to go to drive up there and back to me it's an injustice to our community because we've been told several times that when someone is moved the law book says they can't move in more than 300 miles so we can have visitation the Amish defendants didn't deny the hair and beard cutting but they said it stemmed from religious and family disputes and should have been handled internally sandy cozell The Associated Press
