have you Sabbath everyone I have good news and I have bad news the good news is that I'm really excited about what I have to share today the bad news is I was told to try to wrap it up around one o'clock so you know III was told I think lunch is at 1:00 have you ever had the Bible for lunch okay well at least for a portion of our lunch time we will be having the Bible to eat amen so Wow let us pray a blessing over the food today Heavenly Father we we lift this bread before you today Lord asking that you bless it Lord may it be broken in such a way as to feed the multitude today father I pray that you would speak through me allow me to get my message across in the allotted time and Lord right now there is someone here who needs to hear this message please Lord reach that person reach that young man reached that young woman reached that old man reached that old woman and Lord may something happen within them that will draw them closer to you Lord hide me behind your cross as I speak Lord I am but a child in your eyes so lord I pray that you would use me despite myself in Jesus precious name we pray amen I'd like to talk to you this afternoon about a subject that I think is extremely important for us to understand in the light of this this conference I want to introduce a character to you it's a character that I have made up and I call him JL I want you to listen for for a moment to this made up figure that actually represents something that happened in ancient Israel and what that would happen quite frequently so JL is one day out in the fields working and an accident takes place JL has accidentally killed a man JL runs home and he he speaks to his family and he lets them know what happened and immediately the family begins to cry because they know what's about to happen they know that JL must flee you see in those days God had set up a system where anyone who had who had an incident like this happened they could run to a particular city which the Bible calls a City of Refuge a City of Refuge you see when JL killed this man he knows not this family this man's family and and in the Old Testament they had a figure that was called the V Avenger of blood and what would happen is is that the closest of kin the nearest of kin to the individual that was killed had the right to go after the person that had committed the crime turn with me in your Bibles if you will to the book of numbers 35 numbers chapter 35 and verse 11 the Bible says then you shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you that the Slayer may flee thither witch killeth any person how unawares so get the picture there was there were these cities that were set up where when a person are killed someone unawares or by accident they were to flee to one of these cities to find safety go again with me in your Bibles to the book of Deuteronomy chapter 19 Deuteronomy chapter 19 we are going to trace this morning a very powerful illustration in light of this theme American Idol Deuteronomy chapter 19 beginning with verse 1 the Bible says when the Lord thy God has cut off the nation's whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee and thou succeed as them and dwell in their cities and in their houses thou shall separate three cities for the in the midst of our land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possesses and thou shalt prepare thee away and divide thy course of the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit into three parts that every Slayer may flee feather and this is the case of the Slayer which shall flee feather that he may live whoso killeth his neighbor how ignorant Lea whom he hated not in time past as when a man goes into the wood with his neighbor to hew wood and his hand such as a stroke with the axe to cut the tree down and the head stood from the hill and lighted upon his neighbor that he died he shall flee onto one of those cities and live less the Avenger of blood pursue the Slayer while his heart is what hop please remember that while his heart is hot and overtake him because the way is long and slay him whereas he was not worthy of death in as much as he hated him not in times past the Bible lets us know that if a person accidentally killed someone they were to run to one of these cities of refuge where they could find safety from who the Avenger of blood imagine with me if you will Giles on the run Deuteronomy 19 verse 3 says that a way was to be prepared now beloved when I read that I get really excited a way was to be prepared if you look on the front of your bulletins you will see there show me what thy way show me thy way beloved I want to let you know I want to let you know that when you realize that you are in sin and guilty God always has a way of escape we are told by the spirit of prophecy that along these roads along these roads were signposts and these signposts were to point to the City of Refuge in fact on these posts were written refuge refuge and the streets were to be are clear no stone was to be in the street so that the person who was running did not have to stop and pull out a map and figure out ok which way from here or stumble as he was running beloved do you realize that every day they are there are people seeking refuge do you know what those signposts represents you are those signposts you don't sound exciting you are those signposts belong you are the ones that when a person realizes that he is lost and he needs to find salvation as he is seeking that City of Refuge there are to be signposts all along that way saying this is the way walk he in it but of it every time you put a tract somewhere every time you share an encouraging word to someone you are directing that person to the City of Refuge so beloved the question I have for us this this afternoon is this what happens if you as a signpost are not on your duty what happens if when someone is running in the event of gutters on their trail and they're trying to find the way and you were the one that was supposed to share a word share some encouragement or be an example or witness what happens if you are not at your designated post at the designated time in fact what do you say as a signpost like are you pointing to Hollywood are you pointing to the things of this world when you should be pointing to the things of Jesus Christ what do you say as a signpost beloved the Bible tells us you are the light of the world right you are the light to people who are lost in what in darkness you are the light of the world and then what is the next word ah what all right come on hey what a city okay a city beloved what is what were these called cities of refuge you are the light of the world you are the signposts a city a city set on a hill cannot be hid unless those who are supposed to be the light are actually living in darkness joella's on the run he is running because he doesn't know who the Avenger of blood is imagine with me if you will the the it is it is dark Jael is running he hears the footsteps of the Avenger of blood on his trail can you imagine running and knowing this guy is on my back and if I slow down if I stop he's gonna catch me and I die Jael cannot see the Avenger of blood space go with me if you will to the book of Joshua chapter 20 Joshua chapter 20 Joshua the 20th chapter noticed with me beloved Joshua chapter 20 verse to speak unto the children of Israel saying I'll point out for you cities of refuge where I have spoken unto you by the hand of Moses that the Slayer that kill of any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither and they shall be your refuge from who the Avenger of blood let me ask you then you ever felt the Avenger of blood on your trail verse 4 and when he that does flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city they shall take him into the city unto them and give him a place that he may dwell among them and if the Avenger of blood pursue after him then they shall not deliver the Slayer up into his hand because he smote his neighbor unwittingly and hated him not before time so you get the picture here if you as the the one who had killed someone if you made it to the city before the Avenger of blood got hold of you you were safe if you didn't kill the person intentionally verse 6 and he shall dwell in that city until he stand before the congregation for judgment and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days then shabbos slayer returned and coming to his own city and unto his own house on to the city from whence he fled beloved this is an incredible and powerful truth that when you flee to one of these cities of refuge if you got there before the Avenger of blood got hold of you you were safe you see beloved here's what this this this this this illustration is showing us you see the Bible says that God is our refuge amen now beloved listen to me if God is our refuge that good news is it also bad news yes it's bad news why is it bad news why do you need a refuge what do you mean I need a refuge well the Bible says that all have what sinned and fallen short of the glory of God what me Lord seen when what did I do guess what beloved we the only reason that you were called to run to a City of Refuge is if you have committed murder if you had killed someone Lord kill someone me what are you talking about whoever I killed and then it hits you wait a minute we are guilty of the blood of the Son of God beloved I remember when I first discovered my guilt in the hip-hop industry living my own way doing my own thing and someone brought to me the truths of the three angels messages and it's like that truth of the three angels messages brought me to a realization that I was guilty of sin and beloved off I took because I felt the Avenger of blood on my trail and let me tell you some little bit of it I praise God for the people who God put in my life as signposts to say this is the way walk ye in it but beloved there's something here that that we need to understand because this parallel is is an imperfect type you see once you got to the city and you told the judges listen it was an accident I didn't mean to kill this man and they and they review your case and they come to the conclusion that it was an accident then you had safety however however if you had intentionally killed the man what do you think happened they put you out of the city and you would be at the mercy of the Avenger of blood you see beloved an incredible mind-blowing truth is here presented you see when you and I run when we realize man I'm guilty of sin Lord I need to run because the Avenger of God's blood is on my trail and you run and you make it to the city beloved unless you plead innocent are you with me if you plead guilty what happens you will put out of the city but I would think about what that means which one of us could say when we get into that City of Refuge which one of us can say innocent I didn't mean to kill Jesus innocent I didn't mean to listen God is going to say member all those times I sent those people to your door remember all the appeals from your mother and your father remember all the times that I tried to reach out to you beloved all of us when we get if you decide to run to that city when you get to that City you must plead guilty Wow you are at the mercy of God and isn't God good come on isn't God good that when you plead guilty and God has every right to cast you out of the city he says because you plead guilty because you confessed because you understand your guilt and have thrown yourself on my mercy I say innocent beloved praise God for His mercy beloved I loved that Jesus says I am the what way the truth and the life beloved when when we're told that these streets were to be set up you know not only are you the signposts but Jesus himself listen to this the very one that we were guilty of crucifying he turns around and says I will be your way of escape I will be your way to find refuge and I went like this in numbers 35 verse 12 we're told wouldn't it turn there again we're told that the person who had found a refuge in that city was - he would he would stay there until the death of the high priests until the death of the high priest when the high priest died the man was considered free is anybody thinking with me today but I want you to realize that it is a death of our high priest Jesus Christ that sets us free from the condemnation of past sins so because Jesus our high priest has died is it okay for us now to leave the city what do you think can we go right now to the way things were you know why not but love it because we're told that Jesus our high priest liveth how long for ever do you know that means beloved it means when you get to the City of Refuge it's not a matter of for us of okay I got here now I'm safe I can go back now but now that as long as Jesus Christ our high priest lives we need to stay in the city of refuge but only this sets the foundation of what we're going to talk about because you see beloved Jesus wants to get us into the City of Refuge it is his death that sets us free here's something interesting I want you to go back with me if you will quickly to Joshua 20 verse 7 the Bible says and they appointed here the six cities of refuge they appointed their appointed Kadesh in Galilee in mount Neftali and Shechem in Mount Ephraim and Kirchhoff Dubois which is in Hebron in the mountain of Judah and on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward their sign desire in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben and Rama in Gilead out of the tribe of GAD and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh I want to share something with you very interesting about this there are six cities of refuge and all of these cities were found in elevated places you must be really hungry these six cities of refuge were found in elevated places beloved Jesus said and I if I be lifted up will do one draw all men unto me but of it could it be that these six cities of refuge pointed to Mount Calvary could it be that these six cities of refuge points to Christ and him crucified as the one to whom we are to flee if we want to find refuge from the sins and the iniquity of this world in fact beloved the names of these place of these cities kadesha Kem Hebron Bezerra Ramnath Golan all have meanings and I want you to listen to this Kadesh means sanctuary or holy place secare means shoulder or portion Hebron means association or alliance that there means fortress Ramnath means superiority and golan means passage so beloved if we take all these meanings together and apply them to Jesus Christ we find that Christ is our sanctuary or our hiding place he is our portions he is our Alliance our covenant he is our fortress our elevation and our passage from captivity beloved it is time for you and I to run to the City of Refuge but you see beloved it is once we get to this city I remember getting to this city and I remember being so excited Lord I made it to your city I left the hip-hop industry I was doing this I was doing that and Lord I am now amongst your people praise God and then the Lord said my son look upon the walls of the city and I looked up on the walls and I remember seeing people young people looking out and I began wondering well Lord why are these young people looking out of the city and it's as though the Lord said to me they want to go to where you're coming from no Lord no I'm not so and no Lord I've among your people now no I just made it to the City of Refuge where we should all be rejoicing because we are all marching the Zion amen and God says yes but there are those who are looking to where you just come from wanting what you just left and beloved I remember I remember thinking Lord this can't be true this can't be true let me tell you something when I came into this church I was so excited about everything that I was hearing I shared my testimony there will be times you know when when you know when I first went into a seventh-day Adventist Church and and I remember it was about maybe 30 of us you know jeans sagging pants hoodies first time in church in an Adventist Church and I remember sitting there and I would remember listening to the pastor speak and I remember that uh the pastor it didn't matter what he said beloved remember to pay your tithe and I would be like flat nobody ever told us but ever remember that the seventh day is the Sabbath but now that Jesus Christ is God divine [Music] and then I'd look around and everybody was like this and I'm removing myself do these people not hear the rich word that this pastor is really a boggle my mind that the people could just sit there like it still boggles my mind but love it there's something I don't know what it is but it's almost like what you take for granted the city you grew up in you take for granted the things you grew up around you you think well I'm an adventist by default because I was born in Adventist no you are not born in Adventist I have a sermon coming up I don't know what I'm going to preach it is called 4G you ever heard that 4G and I'm 4G I'm a 4G Adventist full generation as though that beloved let me tell you something you must there is in reality only first generation adventism adventism is not passed down that that's what the Jews thought we have Abraham as our Father Jesus like what Abraham's not your father they're like huh you must be born again and so beloved this issue that we're facing in this day and age is this that that God's people are standing inside the city of refuge and the devil's goal is to lure them out of the city his goal is to is to put up lights around the city and and and all kinds of things around the city to make our young people and and our older people to begin to look outside the city and say man it kind of looks good out there but other your safest bet you're safe is the safest thing you can possibly do is to stay inside the city of refuge you see beloved I want to share some with you about the amazing love of God and and sometimes we we look at God and we don't really understand what God is or who he is or what he does you see another coming back to this issue of the Avenger of blood there is something amazing about this Avenger of blood you see the Avenger of blood first of all was that was described as the nearest of kin to the person that was killed the Hebrew word is God L I'm going to come back to that word so beloved as we think this through our we we must ask the question who is the nearest of kin to the one that we slew if Jesus is the one we are guilty of crucifying then the Avenger of blood is his nearest of kin so now imagine this with me here you are running running for your life you Avenger of blood on your trail it's dark you can't see his face and as you're running you're thinking to yourself man I am so tired it seems like this guy could surely catch me but it's almost like he's playing with me you get to that city of refuge and you're you're there you're talking to Jesus here like Jesus you don't understand I'm so glad you forgave me I'm so glad that that you are here to redeem me old man this God the Avenger of blood was on my trail you should have seen him I was running as fast as I could and and and suddenly something begins to dawn on you you begin to realize wait a minute nearest of kin wait a minute was that you God wait a minute God was that you that was chasing me and God says that was me I wasn't chasing you to try to destroy you I was chasing you I was chasing you into the city they loved it listen to me listen to me sometimes we look at God as this monster who's trying to to destroy us but beloved you look back at your life and you're saying wait a minute God you mean when you took away that boyfriend that was you you mean when you when I lost that job and it made me have to find other employment that allowed me to have the Sabbath off you mean that was wait a minute God you see I you see beloved many of us especially as young people think that it's God out to kill us beloved no God is not out to destroy you he is trying to chase you into the city you love it listen to me how many of you ever had a little animal that you loved a little puppy or a cat or something and that cat you live on a busy street and that puppy your cat gets out of the house and you come running out of the house and you you know you're like this and the puppy thinks he's gonna kill me and you're just running to try to save the puppy from running into where the streets but none of that's how God is towards us he is running his and and we are so afraid of him he hides his face as it were and he chases us because he wants us to get into that city of refuge so that we can be safe I'm beloved let me tell you so let me ask you something how how fast is God just think about that how fast is God if God were to run a spring how fast do you think you would be I want you to realize how supernaturally slow God had to run I mean beloved God in His mercy slows himself down but beloved because he doesn't want to catch you outside the city he doesn't want you caught outside those gates beloved because if you're caught outside the city you will be destroyed I love you it's like God the Holy Spirit and Jesus all conspire in ways to save us knuckleheaded knuckleheads so it's like Jesus says okay I'll be the way and the Spirit says yeah and I'll be the conviction and God says yeah I'll be the Avenger of blood he set you up to save you it's a setup how good god is but of it the saying is true whom God loves he chases whom God loves he chases but ever God is chasing every one of you there are some young people here who are running in circles and God is like he's trying everything he can to get you to run in the way this is the way walk Eeyore run ye in it yes beloved whom God loves he chases and it was also true whom God loves he chastens but never listen to me the Bible says - the Bible says spoil or spare the rod spoil the child it lays around it tells us beloved do not spare the rod in fact in some places says beat the child with the rod and you will save his soul from hell and the young kids are going whatever you see we often look at that verse and we look at it in a in a physical sense I want to tell you something beloved that there is something deeper in that verse it's not talking about our belt will save your child from hell sometimes the belt can send your child to health even quicker and I'm not saying it has its application there but beloved there is something deeper you see the first time that the rod is introduced in Scripture guess where it is it's with Moses you remember that and and you remember Moses when God comes to Moses he says Moses was that you have in your hand and Moses says the serratus says Moses throw that rod on and we threw the rod down what happened it became a serpent and they said pick it back up again and it turned back into a wild well what does that mean listen beloved the rod represents Authority and Dominion think about this Jesus Christ left his authority in heaven came down to this earth just as the rod fell to the ground became sin for us died was buried resurrected and ascended back to his position of authority you see beloved the rod is used to show Christ and him crucified that's why when Moses lifted up the rod that the sea was parted and the children were able to walk through but other when Christ is lifted up that is our deliverance from our enemies so think about its beloved the best thing that God can do for us is to lay the rod up on our backs okay I'll give you a moment to think you see beloved if that rod represents Christ and him crucified the best thing that God can do is lay the rod up on our backs that's why Jesus says who serve will follow me let him deny himself take up his cross and follow me you see beloved when God sends the rod into your life powerful things begin to happen whom God loves he chastens you know what that tells us how do you think God felt about the Egyptians and by the way that's where he sent the rod didn't he Moses Aaron and they brought their rods what is that telling us about God's feeling for the Egyptians he what he loved them he loved the Egyptians pastor what in the world are you talking about how can you say God loved the Egyptians well how can you say God loves you you see beloved something powerful happens here you see remember when God sent Moses and Aaron back in the age of and he says okay I want you to take your rod and the first thing that the first thing that happens is heed Moses or Aaron Tveit they take their rods and we're told that they turned water - what - blood do you know what God was doing you wanna know what God was doing you see if you're in an area where you know let's say you're you know all of your staying here you know you're having a good time you come to the meetings and you go home this evening and you turn on your faucet and the water is coming out blood and said how many of you would go that's strange and let's say you walk over to your bed and you pull it back and you find that there are frogs just relive it all over your bed how many of you will go let me call up Tom and see if he's experienced in some of this said hey Tom I've got frogs in my bed and the waters turned to blood and then you got lice beginning to come in through your windows and it is coming in you're going huh what is this about I know I know I wouldn't do that what would you do what would you do how many of you would opt to leave La beloved listen to me when God sent these plagues to Egypt he was trying to convince them to leave it okay this is not such a good place to be if the water has turned to blood maybe we should go someplace else but Evan I want you to understand God was trying to save Egypt you see when water turns to blood something begins to happen you begin to create it creates a first in you for something better the Bible tells us that that that the rod was stretched forth and the land began to stink with frogs dead frogs beloved when Christ comes into your life that the things that you once used to like the atmospheres you once used to like to go to the places you once used to love to attend now it's something against the stink it just smells kind of bad oh this stinks I don't want to be here anymore but ever when the rod comes into your life the Bible says that lies began to attack their flesh when the rod comes into your life suddenly the things of the flesh now become distasteful I want to get out of this flesh and get into the spirit but of it you can go down the list of these things that that play the land of Egypt and you will find that what God was trying to do in corrupting the land was he was trying to create a desire in their hearts and in their minds for something better so they never listened to me when Jesus enters into your life the clubs you once used to like the foods you once used to love the people you once used to love to hang out with suddenly everything becomes untouchable I wanna go there anymore that's what begins to happen beloved that is what God is trying to do he is trying to lead us out of Egypt into the City of Refuge he's trying to get us to leave the things of the world and run as fast as we can into that city but I've been wide toy around with the devil outside the city beloved it doesn't stop there don't think that because you make it to the city and all a man I was I was once in the world but now I am a seventh-day adventists don't think that because you're seventh-day adventists you're free because if the devil can't get you to go back to Egypt he can sure try to bring Egypt to you he can try to bring Egypt into the church you see but no but I want to show you something go with me to the book of first Corinthians chapter 10 first Corinthians chapter 10 yea the devil is in - room service anybody every one service he'll bring it right to you or don't worry I'll bring it right to you first Corinthians chapter 10 first Corinthians chapter 10 notice with me 1st Corinthians chapter 10 the Bible says moreover brethren I would not that you should be ignorant how that all our fathers were under the cloud and all passed through the sea and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea and all did eat the same spiritual meat and all did drink the same spiritual drink for they drank of that spiritual rock that followed them and that rock was Christ Jesus but with many of them God was not well pleased for they were overthrown where in the wilderness now these things were our example to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted see the Bible tells us that the things that happened to Egypt serve as an example of our for us upon whom the ends of the world are come now beloved I want you to think about this Israel had just been led out of Egyptian captivity is that right and and and now we find Moses at the foot of Mount Sinai go with me to Exodus 24 if you will hold your place there in first Corinthians 10 go with me to Exodus 24 Exodus 24 and notice what the Bible says Exodus 24 beginning with verse 15 the Bible says and Moses went up into the mount and a cloud covered the mounts all right how many of you know what's being spoken about here mm-hmm okay how many of you did this try that again how many of you know what's being spoken about here whoa there was a guy by the name of Moses who received something called the Ten Commandments anybody ever heard that story okay I just want to make sure you're with me yes yeah so Moses has gone up into the mountain look at this watch this let's show them Israel have been delivered from Egyptian captivity Moses is now going up into Mount Sinai to meet with God to be brought before the Heavenly Father what two things does Moses receive of major significance the Ten Commandments and sanctuary information are you with me now while Moses is up in the Mount the people are down below and the Bible tells us notice with me Exodus 24 or Exodus 32 Exodus 32 and verse one and when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down stop Moses has ascended I'm just going to wait Moses has ascended and the people are down below the Bible says that Moses delayed his coming and the people below began to say hmm he delays his coming American Idol anyone do you know what happens next they build and Idol they build an idol but this is not an evil Idol understand you you understand what I'm saying because you remember Aaron said no no no Exodus 32 verse 5 look at him right there with me 32 verse 5 and when Aaron saw it the idol he built an altar before it and Aaron proclaimed and said tomorrow is a feast to the Lord so so this Idol was a sanctified Idol blessed by the church you know the story they begin to to dance music sensuality the people have become idle this is boring why can't we have fun like we used to have in Egypt you see well of it I believe that this holds a very significant parallel for us you see in 1844 God's people were led out of Babylonian captivity amen praise God and at that same time we are told that Jesus was brought before his father moving from holy place to most holy place and Daniel tells us that he came with clouds could it be though that since 1844 the church has begun to say how our lord delayeth his coming well we gotta do somethin to occupy the time but that we're not going to just do straight hip-hop because that would be like Egyptian let's let's sanctified on to the Lord let's pray before we go box there lord help me to knock this man out in Jesus name let's sanctify these these idols these American idols so that they won't be so bad as what we needed and they'll have a disguise or a they'll have it an appearance of good and beloved the people are now doing just what happened back there at the foot of the mountain well you remember what happens Moses eventually does come am i saving he does come even though was delayed even though it seemed like man this sure is a long time even though it seemed like he must be gone today he may not be coming back he did come and beloved you know that he came with judgments in fact you know what he cried out and I could just name the sermon today who is on the Lord's side you see bit of it at that moment when Moses is coming down from the Mount with the commandments in his hands and and he sees what the people are doing and he makes this appeal he was on the Lord's side beloved again there is a slight off miss because the parallel doesn't match when Jesus comes again yes he might get he might say lose on the Lord's side but beloved all decisions have already been made so he basically says he was on the Lord's side let him come up to me let him come up to me beloved all decisions will have been made and beloved I am asking you today whose side are you on what are you allowing to enter into among the people of God and what are you allowed to say here you know what it's good because it's been sanctified whose side are you on anybody ever hear the day four-year principal I'm almost finished we won't turn to these texts I'm just gonna tell you what I'm going to tell you Hebrews 3 tells us that because of the sins sin of unbelief the children of Israel were not allowed to enter God's what rest do you know what his rest is it's the city of refuge you see beloved the time is coming we're told in Revelation chapter 20 that that at the end of the 1000 years the New Jerusalem will be seen coming down guess what guess who's going to be in that city those whom God chased there amen those who God chased there everyone that will be in the city would have been chased there but I got you know that was beloved who will be the ones outside the city those who refused to be chased by God do you understand why God is chasing you into the city because he knows at the end of the millennium anyone who is found out beside the city must come face to face with the Avenger of blood God the Father will avenge the blood of his son let me show your verse will click Isaiah 54 Isaiah chapter 54 knows it with me quickly Isaiah 54 Isaiah 54 verse 7 the Bible says for the Lord has called thee or for a small moment have I forsaken thee but with great mercies will I gather thee in a little wrath I hid my face from thee
