lot a multiple champion coming back for a six-year-old season monomoy girl's already twice been named a champion twice won the breeders cup distaff and she will bid for a third try at that inner six-year-old campaign it all begins in the grade three by a koa coming up later this afternoon that coverage of this race will happen starting at five eastern on fs1 here's the field monomoy girl will tackle she is the even money favorite in this race no one comes close to the type of credentials that she has produced so far in her career she is expected to roll right along in her six-year-old debut with me champion jockey richard migliore as race fans this is a treat really for us to see a star like this one of the biggest stars in the game come back for a six-year-old season very rare to see a mayor come back at six years old after being a champion twice she missed her four-year-old season but came back as a five-year-old and it sounds like she's trained just as well as ever now she's never run at oak lawn park before but she has one at six different racetracks and she's two for two in wet going which she'll encounter today and certainly from this video we're looking at right now is training with the kind of enthusiasm that you want to see a horse train with she's gotten a little bit of extra time to try and prep for this return as a six-year-old this race rescheduled because of that rough weather they had at hot springs arkansas a lot of the country saw and as a result of that she's probably even more fit than she probably would have been well we saw brad cox with the two-year-old returning two-year-old champion yesterday in essential quality he was in the same situation with that one as he is with monomoy girl and he said it was just two more work so if anything it helped them get to their their three and now six-year-old debuts with ultimate fitness maybe the biggest star we have in this game right now at least in terms of returning stars on fs2 that race with monomoy girl of course will be on fs1 again 5 p.m eastern start time on our show here on fs2 we're going to see the dixie bell at oakland 6 for a long sprint it's for three-year-old phillies and abrogate two starts so far make for hall of famer steve asmussen she has shown a ton of talent and in her second start she fought off a couple of challengers to win on a muddy race track yeah she had challenges surrounding her inside of her outside of her looked like she might even been headed in mid-stretch here and then kind of found another gear and kicked on again when she broke her maiden on debut she did it very easily so you don't learn a lot other than she has raw ability you learned a lot about her in her second start taking on winners that not only does she is she fast she's tough too and she's not afraid of a fight she won on the lead in her debut she was able to sit off the leaders in that second start and make that big run she'll try and make it three for three coming up at her stakes debut with more on a big afternoon in hot springs arkansas let's check in live with maggie wolfendale thanks greg and once again the weather hasn't necessarily cooperated here in hot springs we had some serious thunderstorms overnight the rain has been threatening all day here so yet again we are left with a muddy race track and as far as your two-time champion is concerned making her six-year-old bow here today she's only been on a sloppy or muddy race track once before in her life it was that first start off that very long layoff back at churchill so at least she's shown she can handle it but that definitely wasn't her best effort so she'll have to have her a game here today but she is a two-time champion but looking forward to the dixie bell coming up in the next race after this one which is warming up on the track as you guys mentioned abergate looks to keep that squeaky clean record clean here today another one is doing the same but she's only making her second start and that is on the outside with number eight windmill as she is coming in off of a blowout win in her debut broke from the rail which is sometimes not the easiest thing to do she was lightning quick out of the stalls and she just powered home you could visibly see this larry jones trainee really extend and quicken her stride when called upon by jockey luis quinones joe talamo will be aboard today for her second start first time against winners and she's jumping in the deep end of the pool here greg and taking on stakes company in the dixie bell yes sure thank you matt you're the big speed figure in that debut it was not expected as well she was nearly 13 13-1 first time out that secret is out now she's gonna be a much shorter price here coming up at start number two and her current odds for this five and a half for a long sprint ten thousand dollar claiming race makes scarlet position the three currently favored yeah she's she's been proficient at this level at ten thousand before she moved up to the twenty thousand dollar level off the claim last time was a well-beaten third drops back to 10 looks pretty formidable she has speed but she also is versatile meanwhile you have the seven tony anne's miracle who is a multiple winner on and off track although she struggled over the mud last start that was a much tougher spot yeah much tougher spots she drops in for the 10. and she's you know at times been more of a deep closer recently she lost a little bit of her speed over time and if the track is playing anything like he was playing yesterday you kind of want to be the horse drawn you know making your outside kind of move you had an outside flow all day at oakland park it just wasn't beneficial to be close to the rail yeah we saw that all afternoon long staying off that inside with that weather they got let's head back to maggie wolfendel yeah and i have no problems with the current favorite here greg but again as you said riders on the inside will have to work out a trip once again it is visibly wetter down there in the one to three path and anything beyond that it's actually pretty dry there's no lying water there so taking a look at though the horse to her inside in number two brecken's command i thought she looked best of all had a little bit of a trip in her last granite she was 22 to 1 that day steadied at the quarter pole had to wait for room duck back down to the inside on what was again a muddy sealed race track so we'll see what kind of trip she pulls here today as on the outside the other horse who also looked best was the 14-1 shot in number 10 war ballad last win came albeit at mountaineer against much weaker she's stepping up i get it she looks like she's up to the task here greg so she was just one that really caught my eye at a price maggie thank you fourteen to one on that outside runner war ballad five-year-old mare has one on and off track and then miggy have a speedster in the six armory her only try on and off track she was a winner and she's very quick yeah she's very quick although i i'm seeing at least to my eye candy cabin just speed in here i don't know that she's gonna get loose i think she'll make the lead but she's gonna have to work for it yeah triple scout from the rail with speed as well and drawn inside you would think they're gonna have to go as we take a look at fleeta bell waiting to step in race five here at oaklawn scarlet position the three still the two to one favorite dixie bell still to come and later this afternoon grade three bayakoa and the return of two-time champion monomoy girl here's vic stauffer with race five from hot springs arkansas texas music sweet tatum two more jp's gladys and war ballot they're at the post they're off very even start scarlet position shows speed armory and sweet tatum are close up fleeta bell is their triple scout is at the rail and between horses goes texas music then tony anne's miracle and war ballot followed by short lead from texas music and armory sweet tatum's on the move four deep and in the white blinkers sweet tatum within a length and a half of lead scarlet position still very much part of this race though she's at the rail needs racing room top of the stretch with our marie scarlet position trying to squeeze through a very tight spot meanwhile sweet tatum is running up four wide fleetable is still very much part of the battle and sweet tatum in scarlet position now kick on sweet tatum is the leader she's now a length and a half in front of scarlet position and fleeta bell late charged tony anne's miracle but sweet tatum is clear and she's got it sweet tatum has opened up three gonna be close for second maybe tony anne's miracles sweet tatum wins sweet tatum won by two tony anne's miracle was second scarlet position third several horses and a photo for fourth seven-year-old mayor who finds some of her better form going back to some of the strongest connections on this circuit seven-year-old mayor last start slightly moves her up in class and she takes to the off going six to the off going and comes down the center of the track we were seeing that all day yesterday uh the three horse i thought ran extremely well scarlet position had to squeeze through tight quarters and probably down towards the inside we really didn't want to be made her vulnerable to be picked off by the seven tony hens miracle late for the play spot two dollar trifecta eight seven three three hundred and seventy dollars diadoro cohen and empire racing stables team up with his mariby to honor and that we talk about but the biggest step a horse takes is from breaking their maiden because they're facing horses that are all in the same position as them they have never won a race going against winners well abrogate has already showed she can run against winners and fought off some challengers that day so she's got a little bit more foundation a little more battle tested if you will that is coming up next six race it kicks off a pick five at oaklawn as well and part of that sequence the champion back in action monomoy girl she wins the breeders cup dis staff for a second time in her career completing a perfect campaign in which he'd returned meg off an 18-month layoff the very next day sold for 9.5 million dollars and new connections say let's bring her back for the six-year-old campaign yeah and again it's our reward as fans to see this mayor campaign again at six and i applaud the connections that raced her again as five and then she sold and subsequently coming back now as a uh six-year-old thank you spencer farm for bringing her back allowing us to enjoy her again and she has a lot in common with the race's namesake bayakoa bayakov's champion at five monomoy girl was champion at five bayakova was champion at six mauna boy girl trying to repeat her championship season and bayakoa won the apple blossom that's one of monomoy girl's main early season goals yeah that's coming up on april 17th and this is a prep race for that apple blossom at oakland you have bayakoa two-time breeders cup distaff winner as well monomoy girl two-time breeders cup disstaff winner a lot of similarities it's interesting to see her in this race obviously she is the standouts and she really has never been shut down since that breeders cup victory she has sort of been kept at least likely in training here's her trainer brad cox on the champ she was 14-14 in the oaks and i think 11 of 11 in her first breeders cup and uh 10 of 10 in her second breeders cup so you know post i'm a big believer post is overrated period but uh you know if she's got enough speed to to be up where she wants to be and and hopefully you know i think it's a good good can be a good trip from being out there florence obviously going to be able to see what's going on to this left and go from there our short term goals the apple blossom and you know this is our you know prep race for it so we'll um you know hopefully it all goes well and this is uh the stepping stone to the the apple blossom for her but uh it means a lot to bring her here like i said this has been a huge part of our operation for several years and for her to be here it means a lot first time that she's going to be at oaklawn and as you mentioned earlier in the show wherever she has gone i mean she takes her game with her yeah she brings her a game 13 victories two seconds actually finished in front and 14 of those 15 starts was disqualified at park's race course in the catillion but it doesn't seem to matter she's one on turf she's one on fast track she's one on off tracks and she's wanted six different race tracks she doesn't care she's going to show up and run our race she does it all yeah and floren giroud he has been the regular pilot been on board for each at every start with the exception of the debut so he knows her extremely well it's gonna be a lot of fun to see what happens uh in her six-year-old campaign the starting point again comes later today grade three buy a koa that will happen over on fox sports one and we kick off that coverage at the top of the hour beginning at five eastern time you do not want to miss it two-time champion returning first start back since her second win in the breeders cup disstaff good one coming up here at aqueduct in the seventh and allowance optional claiming race this is seven eighths of a mile let me take this call this is a six-year-old mayor taking on the boys in this spot she's taking on a very good group of males as well herself she's a 12-time winner she's won four of her last five starts and there she is trained by james ferraro dylan davis will be aboard she's got a tall task in here but she couldn't come in any sharper no she couldn't come any sharper and a terrific post position for her she possesses speed but she can also stalk she basically gets the the run of the race she gets to look at what's going on inside of her dylan davidson can make a decision how much he wants to engage i think she's very well drawn against the boys and when we talk about off race tracks sometimes it benefits phillies that are a little bit lighter frame than the boys because they don't get down into a track as much they kind of run over the top of the ground you see in europe on soft ground phillies and mares beat the boys quite often because they don't get bogged down as much there she is two to one co-favorite along with a six-year-old mayor male excuse me who's going to be next door who was probably the horse to beat in this race for linda rice who loves this racetrack he's three for five over it and he too like let me take this call proven on and off track yeah he's proven on and off track he looked tremendous in the paddock while they were saddling and he ran extremely well last time under mike luzy to rally gets eric cancel today we'll get to him in a minute that was the six wicket trick we were talking about here's on or up who will have the rail on her up good record and off going three for five uh and uh good recorded acquit up two four wins from nine starts at aqueduct mad money did you go two starts back he went gate to wire for a win if he can get loose on the lead it could be dangerous here he certainly could be that was going a mile might be a little bit of a sharper pace in here but it's up to the philly to keep him honest t loves a fight he's at 701 seven-year-old as well who's an 11-time winner yeah put a line to his last race completely lost the race at the start when he left up in the air um needs a little pace in front of him not sure he gets it to set up for his late run former graded stakes winner grade one place sunny ridge though his comeback race after over a year's layoff left a lot to be desired yeah he just was a complete no-show off that long layoff i have my questions he's nine to two here's wicked trick for linda rice we mentioned the three for five record here at the big a well it makes a lot of sense uh a horse that really ran well last time likes an off-going certainly the horse to beat put together a six-race win streak during late 2019 and good part of 2020. let me take this call here's the six-year-old mayor who has taken on the boys she has won again four of her last five starts yeah and very well drawn outside kind of has the run of the when a rider gets confidence in a horse too you just have so much belief and i really believe that ryder and horse feed on each other's energy they just have ultimate confidence in each other jimmy farrar has done a terrific job and she's just been in terrific form and i love her draw you know elongated one turn races i just think having an outside post position is a benefit you can kind of size up how things are going you know what's going on inside of you because you have over almost three furlongs until the turn so you don't have to worry about you know saving ground until you get closer to the turn and the race is already kind of taking its shape she used to be very quick she used to be on the lead and i was talking about this with anthony stabile and talking horses earlier this morning sort of changed the way she does things so she can sit in stock now and that's kind of her run meanwhile wicked trick second choice at two to one comes off a second place finish here in her his excuse me six-year-old debut and he ran extremely well he stumbled a bit at the break that day i thought he stumbled but kind of kept going forward he didn't lose position so i don't want to overstate what the stumble was but uh that certainly was a winning effort he runs that race he's going to be tough it brings in pretty strong credentials this is not an easy spot for let me take this call to tackle the boys here's sonny ridge who back when he was at his best obviously for a trainer was under indictment right now so who knows what was going on but sunny ridge was tackling some of the best in the game at his peak well i think that's the questions he coming out of a barn that again you talked about under federal indictment for performance-enhancing drugs with the horses went to a very capable trainer in john kimmel we saw him win two yesterday here at aqueduct one with the stake the stymie with mr buff but he was so sluggish and lethargic last time off that long layoff and now he's turning back a bit in distance where the pace should be even sharper i've got to take a wait and see approach he's going to have to show me some life before i could you know be make him a contender against this kind could certainly make the argument though that you know gear plus layoff needed that start under his belt and now that maybe he has a run under him we're gonna see at least some of that talent that he's shown in the past oh no doubt no doubt i mean he listen he has ability if you go back to his toboggan going seven furlongs here at aqueduct back january of 2020 that race is certainly good enough for him to win and we talked about the three mad monies two-time winner on an off track two back when gate to wire has shown sprint speed in the past as well rudy rodriguez romero mirage there's the mayor tackling the boys let me take this call from the outside post seven with dylan davis for trainer james ferraro and she's the key to the race to how it's going to be run i don't think dylan davis is going to allow mad money's too long a rope and he'll be close to her if not in front of him there she is in line anthony stabile with the call here's ray seven to kick off win trained by linda rice eric cancel and this runner now four for six here at the big a yeah and he just got a nice trip made that outside move no excuses for the seven uh let me take this call she was heads up with the winner turning for home and just had no response when he kicked on by and she actually weakened late looked like t loves a fight who broke extremely sharp under jorge vargas today uh rallied up looks like he got this place spot to round out your exactly close between him and mad monies but it does look like t loves the fight got the place yeah six four three is what it looks like here and you know wicked trick let me take this call when they were head and head didn't last long as the six-year-old son of hat-trick puts away the six-year-old mare she weakens late and this horse does go off your eight to five favorite at post time to kick off this cross-country pick five yeah and he was a very logical favorite a horse that you know has shown a affinity for aqueduct affinity for wet tracks he worked out a nice trip eric cansell aboard for the winning ride we're gonna shift gears head back over to oaklawn park and the dixie bell coming up windville who just has that one start on the resume it was a gate to wire win impressive debut earning that 84 buyer speed figure currently the nine to five favorite we bring in our hall of fame rider gary stevens hey gary let's get your thoughts on how you've seen this racetrack playing how would you ride this track at oakland today not a lot different than yesterday to be honest with you it's not carrying as much water on it as it was yesterday this track dries out very quickly but i'm still seeing a bias and i heard richie yesterday talking about how important it is to sit in there even if you're not riding a race and everyone was fighting to get to the outside i still say today advantage outside tactical speed huge advantage and and guys are trying to stay out off the rail i did see in the last race horse get through on the inside that finished okay so that tells me it's getting a little bit better in there but it's still advantage outside um stocking speed or speed and listen when we get to the big mayor and florence uh giroud with monomoy girl i think he's got even though he's got the best mayor in the race he's got a huge tactical advantage being out where he is he can look over see what's going on he can control the race and when you have that controlling tactical speed you can control a race in this particular race right now windmill on the outside with joe talamo and larry jones they always improve second time out well she won first time out she's got a tremendous amount of speed and i think joe talamo from this outside post and the eight can kind of dominate things from the outside there are some other good phillies in here it's a great race well gary thanks yes she's nine to five right now and obviously abrogate who has that extra start under her belt when she she got a challenge and she got tested and she came out the victor in that spot she's the nine-to-five favorite and there she is yeah i think they're both extremely talented but i'll always lean to the horse that's shown they can get in a fight and come out on the right end of it and and that's what abrogate has shown already that she can get hooked she can get tested and she's not going to wilt from that pressure and and i'm not saying windmill can't do that we just haven't seen it yet we'll see if she can prove it this afternoon you also have mariah's princess in the spot the two she's at 3-1 with more though on windmill who was so impressive in that debut let's bring in jonathan kinchin jk how you doing wolfie i'm all right i'm doing good i'm happy to be here excited to see monomoy girl but before that we got some other things to accomplish uh you heard gary talk a little bit about how the outside has been where you want to be and that is why i like windmill in this spot now if you flip the post positions of the five and the eight abrogate and windmill i would take abrogate i like the horse that's gonna be drawn towards the outside will always be able to stay in that comfortable position won't get pressured from out there we'll get to dictate what happens in this race i love outside tactical speed on dirt race tracks anyways but especially on a day when that's where you want to be i think windmill's going to be tough to beat she's got a little bit more of an opportunity to improve off of her second of her first start into her second start and she's the one i want on here and the prices are so close between her and abrogate give me the one towards the outside the eight windmill all right jk thanks nine to five right now joe talamo taking over for start number two i'll tell you one thing though triple digit buyer figure for uh jk shirt today always comes strong with his shirt he's extra strong this was like you know breeders cup kind of stuff oh he he has fortunately a little bit of uh money for the wardrobe after making a big play on monomoy girl maybe he'll share that story a little bit later on the show when we get closer to the buyako here's our post sprayed for the dixie bell and we're going to start with going good she too is a multiple winner but both her wins came on grass this will be the dirt debut both on turf the mother actually though won a stake on the dirt and was very good on the dirt has one sibling that has been better on turf though brad cox florengiro monomoy girl connections teaming up there mariah's princess she broke her maiden at fairgrounds and then she was second in a stake down in new orleans in her third start yeah and philly that is improved with every start she can continue to improve philly who beat her by the way that day she ran second in that stake three-time stakes winner who's four for seven in her career though philly she beat charlie's penny came back and won the silver bullet day miss 20 big long shot alex concharri rider change yeah this really is really moving up in company she's never faced the likes of this before big time at nine to one gonna cut back in distance i hope that things get hot on the front end that's our best hope to come and get some piece of this eight to five favorite undefeated two for two for the hall of fame barn of steve asmussen here is abrogate very strong connections very good philly she's going to have her hands full with the philly drawing outside of her but she's already shown some toughness and here is the philly drawn outside 84 buyer speed figure in the debut when she went off sort of unnoticed at almost 13-1 gate to wire win that day really like how laid back and quiet she is sometimes the horse comes back after they they debut their first race and they get a little keyed up she looks like she's very quietly confident and just walking smoothly towards the starting gate fox hill farm larry jones they have a way with phillies they've been some pretty good ones in the past harv de grasse comes to mind yes it was a horse of the year with more on the dixie bell and affiliate who's making a surface switch let's go back to maggie wilfindale yeah taking a look at the horses here out on the track greg and regards to number one in here going good she's going to see if she likes to go in here on this track and just regards to the wind uh weather really quickly it's toying with us it rains a bit and then it stops and it rains a bit so there's no way that this track is going to dry out um i think throughout the rest of the day so what it is is what you're going to get but sometimes when you do have that wet sealed race track it'll mimic a turf course a little bit and that plays well into the hand of going good who albeit looks more like a turf sprinter she is a ball of muscle though and i loved her disposition in the paddock she's a big price right now for especially brad cox trainee and i'd actually be more against her if we were dealing with a dry fast track so maybe this track helps her as we move on to number two mariah's princess as greg you pointed out she comes out of a very good race finishing second to joy's rocket with charlie's penny and third there i did think she hung a little bit more i think joyce rocket had to do more dirty work and she was in perfect range to beat her that day and she just hung on the money but george rock is a very good horse and she comes in here for phil bauer who i think has her looking fantastic i mean she's very fit she's a very athletic looking philly too so maybe a little bit of a freshening will do her well and then finally on the outside number eight windmill second start different surface she won on a fast track first time out but looking at her as a physical she suggested me that she had no problem with the going here because she's a very light on her feet type of philly very lightly framed very racy and athletic looking she came into the paddock she was very forward and into the bridle but she never did more than that as meg noted she's very calm when she got with the pony so that's what you want to see with the second time starting phillies greg all right maggie thanks well you have the philly on the rail who's switching surfaces but she showed speed on the grass you have the three a big long shot who's showing some speed but windmill we're going to show you the debut race here 21 and change speed in that debut she was really quick out of the gate as well yeah i mean she broke extremely sharp which you know sometimes first time starters they need a race to kind of figure it out she was very sharp away from the gate and when she was set down she found more even after setting those fast fractions so she obviously is extremely talented but you couldn't ask for a straighter more professional philly on debut the way she's running to the wire i think jk made some nice points that outside draw particularly on a track that is playing with that outside flow and having your main rival directly inside of you definitely gives you an advantage but if you're ricardo santana jr and you know this then what's your game plan well there's no way ricardo santana is looking to go to the inside he's going to try to park himself in about the four or five path and make that other philly adjust around him the only way that that doesn't work out is if joe talamo was able to get in front of him and ease him down towards the inside let's take a look at abrogate this was in the mud at oaklawn in her three-year-old debut after a six-length score to break her maiden is a two-year-old and it looked like she took another step forward in her second start well she did and again showing that ability to withstand a fight you know we talk about it a lot a lot of horses can throw a punch can they take a punch where she showed she can throw a punch and then this race show she could take a punch and kept finding and at one point as he turned home she was in between horses she had challenges surrounding her she seemed impervious to that she just seemed very focused about staying to the task at hand yeah she showed great determination she fought with the pacesetter put that one away and then you saw hold off and holding off southern grace there late in the race she remains the eight to five favorite in here of course steve asmussen a little later on this afternoon he knows exactly what he's up against but he's gonna send out a five-time stakes winner in finite to challenge the champ monomoy girl yeah and listen finite is a four-year-old she's still improving she's still developing so she's going to need to take a step forward but not to say she can't take a step forward and something that we don't talk about very much and watching monomoy girl train you don't expect this but there's usually a certain point in any racehorses career when they've kind of peaked they've done the best they can and they start to have less enthusiasm for the game watching her train i don't think that's the case but until they run you don't know that for certain meanwhile mariah's princess this is going gonna be her three-year-old debut maggie touched on this one coming out of that stake at fairgrounds and felt that she hung a little bit in that race yeah i mean she was head up uh coming past the eighth pole a furlong from the wire 220 yards and then she gave ground a little bit i think the outside two are just a little too strong for everybody else in this race now does it horses can lose because they get hooked up if you're on the five abra gate ricardo santana you've got to respect the eight windmill with joe talamo and joe thomas respect them sometimes they get over engaged and it sets it up for someone to pick them off late it's not a match race and really the only philly we haven't talked about in this entire race is the four big time who is undefeated sprinting she's three for three her only loss was at a mile 16th last time out she turns back in distance to sprinting she's done it on the lead she's done it from a stocking position she's done it on a wet track fast track and she's ten to one right now yeah and i guess because she's running against uh state brad's louisiana breads um in those stakes that maybe people are discounted but how many times have we seen dallas stewart hit the board at least with huge price horses there's a knack for doing that in the kentucky derby as well abrogate the five philly the favorite for hall of famer steve asmussen but windmill could hold the tactical advantage from the outside post under joe talamo here's vick stopper with the dixie bell they're off slow start going good fast start mariah's princess and abrogate windmill is with those two these three speed out going good after that tardy beginning is going to move through and come all the way up to challenge and here comes going good whatever the first fraction is she's about three fifths quicker then comes big time and the trailer is miss 20. into the far turn in the 43rd dixie bell going good has put her head in front of abrogate windmill four deep and at the rail mariah's princess now three across the track as mariah's princess has out sprinted two and a half lengths big time has five lengths to make up eight lengths last two missed twenty many chances around the far turn going good abrogate windmill and a resurgent mariah's princess gonna come up four deep she's still two lengths behind the leader going good at the top of the stretch windmill has run up to take a clear second as abrogates back in third these three final furlong three back to mariah's princess and here's windmill to charge to the front windmill a 16th out now leads by a length and a quarter from abergate and going good but it's windmill clear she comes to the wire in the dixie bell windmill undefeated windmill beat going good abrigade third big time fourth windmill she had to show a new dimension today she did not make the lead she's a perfect two for two for larry jones well it shows you what an advantage that outside post is particularly with an outside flow to a racetrack she was able to settle a little bit the first quarter went to put the pressure on abrogate but what about the run from the one horse going good who missed the break was probably a couple lengths slow rushed up the inside i don't think the place you know to be but she was drawn there but made up all that ground and then fought so valiantly through the stretch and still was second she got passed and you figured she was done dropped back good night and she battles back and actually finishes ahead of abrogate that was a talented runner-up finish right there from going good first time on a dirt surface but gary windmill now two for two and showing some versatility showing some versatility and uh joe talamo writing with so much more confidence than when he had left california i love what i'm seeing he's riding to a different level this is how you ride good phillies this is how you teach them she was on the lead in her first race he taught her something today yes he did have an advantage on the outside but what this tells me with going good down on the inside with florenza roo the inside is much better than what it was yesterday yesterday had that happen she was done at the quarter pole so not nearly as as ineffective down on the inside is what it was yesterday but still an advantage on the outside i love the way that joe rode this fellaini and this is a quality one greg that certainly looks that way windmill daughter of street since goes off at two to one and now a perfect two for two with a stakes win on the thought i mean i knew we had a good philly i and i thought i had her fit enough to win i did not think we had a horse that was like that she won just easy uh and then and and i knew she was fast but i didn't know that she's gonna be this caliber per se right off the bat she's pretty nice she's two for two as you mentioned and i mean you go right to a steak with her do you think this philly is the greatest ace quality y'all no doubt and uh and we we do have a little plan match out for you know you don't try not to get the the the horse in front of the cart and uh or we are putting orange type of credentials that she brings to the table in this race with me former champion jockey richard migliore and we all win in this sport by seeing someone of her stature come back for a six-year-old season it's great for our sport i think it you know creates fans people are able to follow a horse over several seasons they kind of latch on and it really spreads the fan base around spent thrift farm b-way news bought this uh mayor right after the breeders cup win he also cam can behold her a champion into her six-year-old season so we're very lucky that we have such a sporting gesture well comes over it um it's always a fun night well her trainer brad cox has said as you look at this resume it is just incredible what she's done 13 for 15 overall and really she's crossed the wire first in 14 of 15. one of those was a disqualification brad cox says she's showing she's enjoying doing what she does as much as she ever has well that's what you want to see that enthusiasm and training particularly as they start hitting advanced stages you want to know because there comes a point with any athlete where you're just not as motivated as you once were it's same for horses as it is for people she's showing that she's still into it still enthusiastic so we're gonna have to wait a little while to see little monomoy girls running around her return grade three byakkoa still to come distance and cineshack sort of a logical favorite in this spot horse dropping to the lowest level he's ever run at before and it looks like cutting back to a distance that's better for him yeah they stretch him out to a mile last time and against tougher and you know he had a decent trip he was close to the pace and he flattened out he's turning back to a distance where he seems more comfortable eric cansell and there is cena shack we'll be aboard this horse right here he's been riding as good as he ever has but as good really as anybody in this jockey colony yeah you could see his confidence has really blossomed this winter getting good opportunities making the most of those opportunities and it's just interesting to see a young guy when they start winning realizing hey i can compete at this level he writes here for george weaver the last starts it didn't go well for cineshak ignore that was at a mile the six furlong events for this three-year-old son of shackleford they've been very handled off tracks she's traveled she takes her show on the road she had a year layoff a four-year-old campaign was non-existent because she had to overcome some stuff but came back as a five-year-old and put together a perfect season and i'm sure she's looking to repeat that again as a six-year-old life is good right now if you're trainer brad cox had mentioned coming off his first ever eclipse award he has one of the top three-year-olds in the country as well who we saw look impressive yesterday and now he has another champion returning today for more let's go to maggie wolfendel i'm here at the barn of brad cox's on the backside at oaklawn where monomoy girl will make her first start here in arkansas she is the mayor that really kind of put brad on the map as they both were eclipse winners last year but go back a few years ago that was his first kentucky oaks win and it really propelled him into the spotlight of one of the premier trainers that we have in the country so he's also brought her back from a year and a half layoff battling colic a pulled gluteal muscle so the training feat that he has done with this mayor to now bring her back as a six-year-old is nothing short of remarkable it's a testament to his program and the rest of the health that he has too because she's also not the easiest horse to train she can be a little bit quirky in the mornings too but let's face it we're all excited and i'm sure there's nobody more excited than brad cox to get monomoy girl back to the races maggie thanks i'm sure excited i'm sure a little bit nervous as well when you have one as good as she is with the resume she has and the chance to be one of the greats of all time in this sport every time they line up it probably makes you a little bit nervous as you take a look at the races remaining presented by claiborne farm sloppy at oak lawn where we'll see monomoy girl fast and firm at the fairgrounds maybe yeah we've been dealing with kind of the off conditions at oakland for a few days we saw a big outside closers track yesterday a little bit more fair today still think you want to be outside i think it helps monument girls cause being six of six when you're the best two you don't want to deal with traffic just stay out in the clear well we're gonna bring in our hall of fame rider who's had some pretty good long relationships with some of the better phillies and mirrors in the history of this sport gary stevens joins us and gary florengiro he's been the regular pilot on board for 14 of the 15 career starts of monomoy girl what's this relationship been like well it's not only the relationship with monomoy girl but it's the relationship with the trainer with brad cox he is his go-to guy he's been the number one writer since 2017 with this rise to stardom for brad cox all the way through an eclipse award and when you have this type of relationship it takes so much pressure off of you as a writer you know you're not going to get fired you ride with confidence you prepare them listen she's going to be a different mayor at six than what she was at five years old i noticed that with beholder it took a little longer to bring her around it's breeding season right now they get a little bit sluggish on you but i don't see that with her i don't see any problems for her today he's going to ride her with a lot of confidence and he knows he's going to take care of her leading to another breeder's cup classic later on in the year i know what the final goal is for this mayor that's why they brought her back and thank you for sharing her with us for another year uh you know i mean i don't think she has to win today i think she will win but i went through it i know what the end goal is and they're going to work back from when the breeders cup is at del mar this next summer and then come our fall and come all the way back and work towards that and i think this is a great stepping stone for her and the place she's in today at oakland park we echo those those sentiments gary absolutely everyone in this game who's a racing fan excited and i can't wait to have her back in action the starting point again it begins this afternoon brad cox fleur on giroux they have been a super tandem together and here's what they have left the rest of the afternoon out of sight looked very impressive last time out to break his maiden monomer girl chris josie in race 10 at six to one and what's that like i know early in your career too you were a contract writer for a trainer how did that help your confidence well when you're a part of the team you're not just like a a disposable piece of the puzzle right you know you you work with the horses you work with the trainer you understand each other's approach what you want to accomplish and if you do make a mistake it's like gary said you're not worried that you're going to lose your job so it frees you up to go out there and ride with a clear conscience and and confidence you have confidence one thing i notice and you know florent drew moved his tack to oakland this winter to stay close to brad cox and of course monomoy girl he's not riding as many horses only about 60 mounts so far he's winning it better than 26 percent but for a guy who rides year round this is great it gives him an opportunity to basically stay a little fresher it's a long campaign as you get older it's hard when you're young you ride over a thousand horses a year sometimes twelve hundred fourteen hundred this will keep him fresh throughout the year for aunt drew has really done a great job managing his career we're gonna see this team line up together in the very next race here at oak lawn florent giroud he'll be aboard for brad cox on out of sight we saw listed on that graphic coming off a maiden score first two starts of this colts career they tried him at seven for long so maybe the key was just going a little bit shorter yeah and again like a lot of brad cox every race has been a little bit better a little bit stronger out of sight three to two favorite we'll get to him in a moment we start our post spray with causeway jones blinkers on uh so impressive on debut or you went wire to wire at remington park didn't show too much last time do the blinkers on wake him up edge to edge with six to one morning line 24-1 currently yeah and it just looks like his form has gone a little bit backwards but also some turf races in there lawlessness connections tried them in the smarty jones on the triple crown trail that did not pan out no getting back to sprinting but he really would have to run faster than his speed figures suggest here's brad cox and florence giroud he'll team up with monomoy girl on out of sight makes a lot of sense very hot connections and uh horse that is improving with every start too bob's edge trained by larry jones terry thompson rides we saw larry jones get the best of brad cox in the last one this horse is one for one on a sloppy track at churchill downs yeah that was with windmill in the dixie bell here's extreme mayhem the debut it was an impressive win in the slop at laurel at laurel and that was very good and came from off the pace today like to see that with a first-time starter beta horse would come back and win a stake is a two-year-old whiskey double hall of famer steve asmussen sends this one out yeah getting back to sprint stretched out last time just didn't look like you really want to go that far lock up at 12-1 for d-wayne lucas very fast and dewayne lucas is not afraid to allow his horses to flaunt their speed and back to back wins for the ninth city charm but this is a big step up yeah this is quite a bit tougher but at least he has the winning habit seventh race kicks off the late stretch out now cutting back this horse should have some uh have a nice little bottom foundation to him and i also like the fact that he's drawn towards the outside uh the outside has been a place where you'd probably would like to be in the last few days at oak lawn so i think that's interesting i also like the fact this horse was working at fairgrounds they didn't have nearly the weather impact that they did at oaklawn park so this would prevent this horse from missing training whether it's just galloping in the morning or whatever it might be i think another one that's interesting is the one causeway jones this whole horse was extremely fast for jerry hollander for first out i wasn't crazy about this horse because they were on the rail and like we said that's not exactly where you wanted to be but if you watch the last race with us the one going good spent a lot of time on the inside and made a furious run up the inside so it's possible that the track could be changing a little bit in the one causeway jones is a nice price on the board but my top pick is going to be the seven whiskey double whiskey double 875 thousand dollar son of into mischief trying to get the second one of his career yeah for the windshield thoroughbred steve ashmoleson trains for them for a very long time the asmussen family handles a lot of their young horses so they've had a great relationship the big he needed the last race he just so heavy i think that he'll improve with racing i wanted to take advantage of that you know he he didn't get that big being excited he's extremely laid back so i thought he needed a little urgency in him and i think there's a lot more in the tank yeah he was that impressive rallying as he did but lining up to have a pretty big next two races as well as the uh arkansas breads as you bring in a very formidable entry here in bye bye jay she's tried open company i mean her race record is by far better than anybody she meets today as far as things setting up taking the blinkers off she's affiliate that has had speed what's the decision took the blinkers off over or not break in the last two starts her last two starts she didn't get away from there thought she needed something different it very happy that under especially under these circumstances that we've tried something different expect it to work but it still hasn't happened but she'll need to be away a lot better than she has in her last two races you know competitive field it's the volume of runners the circumstances of it i don't want her behind all of it now finite obviously taking on a on the turf in this maiden special weight coming up and summer palace 9-5 favorite for trainer brendan walsh adam bisquitsa will be aboard and this will be the seventh try to try and get through and get that first win of the career beaten at short prices each of the last couple of starts has burned up a lot of money watching his replays greg he gives you the feeling of a horse that doesn't really want to go by he likes to run with horses not necessarily run by horses we'll see right now the public there he is little skittish in the paddock gonna give him at least one more chance although not odds on like he has been each of the last two starts so when you're looking beyond him in here right now it's the eight freddie flincher his dad of course was sensational on the grass when he came here to the states for chad brown he's in the barn of brendan walsh he's a stable mate here of summer palace yeah this horse has had a little bit of trouble getting out of the gate in north america so far but he adds blinkers maybe that will help his cause i thought the four reigning spirit coming off a little bit of a layup this horse had hinted at a lot of ability last year at times getting rank kind of making his own trouble he returns to gelding with blinkers on so he's kind of getting the total makeover for trainer al stahl and he is five to one at the moment and then you have a horse on the outside intentional walk we'll get to in a minute he'd shown hints to talent as well really his only turf start that he finished the race ran a real big one he lost his rider in his next start he's been off over well just about a year he's going to make the return off a long layoff today meanwhile reigning spirit lot of changes for the alistar runner you were talking about here blinkers on new gelding as he makes his four-year-old debut yeah and again this horse had shown ability last year a couple of races i thought he created some of his own trouble his tendency to want to get keen at points in the race if he can just put some continuity into his run and this is actually one of his most professional runs uh last year and he ran extremely well to be second but um this this is a horse i think that a price is a horse that i'm going to give a long look to and you know his turf races he comes from so far out of it with that late run and then he was on a race that was taken off the turf and he was forwardly placed they put the blinkers on him do they want him to be more in the game early well i think just giving him some continuity you don't want horses to run in stops and starts and even though he was rallying from far back in some of those races when he was behind horses he would grab the bit and try to run off with the jockey and then they'd have to get him to settle so you want continuity to a horse's run live look there in the paddock as we approach the six minute mark to post at the fairgrounds while back getting down to a short price again here on on summer palace but that can be the case where you've had multiple opportunities three seconds now and six starts where you you just don't see that killer instinct well it seems like he has certainly the ability to win he's run faster from a speed figure standpoint than anybody in the race but if you go back and watch his replays when he gets there he just doesn't seem to care to go buy horses he's very happy to run with horses horses are hurt animals some of them are just happy to run with the pack as opposed to dominating the pack we've got a first time starter on the rail trained by sheree devoe who's bred by celebrity chef bobby flay gabriel syez will ride 901 right now yeah and good steady works i like the spacing of the works when we talk about workouts i'm not as you know time isn't as important to me as the spacing of workouts i want to see a steady spacing means a horse is healthy and he's not having interruptions in his training post parade coming up shortly here at the fairgrounds for this eighth race my on the 16th here on the turf and the eight to five favorite remains summer palace still to come of course monomoy girl the two-time champ back in action making her six-year-old debut in the grade three buy a koa and i loved steve asthma isn't confidence you got to go in with confidence he knows what he's up against but finite obviously very talented in her own right didn't run a race as he said last time out but we'll see what she can bring as she tackles the two-time champ later on here's struttin buck and here's the one who was bred by bobby flay and making a nice impression on the racetrack defied it's 701 jimmy graham yeah horse that the turf race is really really good forms a little dirtied up with the dirt races eight to five favorite again summer palace well he looks great on his toes but i want to see a little more killer instinct at the finish here's the one adding blinkers new gelding reigning spirit i like this son of warfront i think he has ability if he can put it all together 22-1 on his first timer here by into mischief yeah and sometimes with firsters we let the board be our guide this horse is not taking any money conor murphy sends out the seven i'm not even going to try here new gelding who's making his state's debut seba audi i'll tell you i'll take a chance uh horses got been running okay in some big fields in europe freddie flincher blinkers go on for trainer brendan walsh the stablemate of the favorite just trying to get him a little bit more forwardly placed get him out of the gate a little quicker and 701 outside this horse coming off a year layoff and again the only turf start that he finished he was a runner-up beat less than two lengths also coming back as a first time gelding did show ability in that one turf start where he didn't clip heels all right time for our twin spires market mover we go back to jonathan kinchin yeah the twin spars market mover's gonna be the eight freddie flinchar this horse has taken some money it was eight to one morning line now the morning line is just a prediction of what the public's gonna do and so but when a horse starts off at eight to one and then comes all the way down to be the favorite and i think right now is it seven to two there's there's an indication there that there's some money coming for this horse and the money is typically right in this game this is a horse that doesn't have a lot of speed this race does not have a lot of speed in it that makes it a little bit of a concern for me he's gonna have to get lucky to get some pace to close into i'm gonna try to beat this horse while they're taking the money that they're taking i like the full reigning spirit you heard some of the guys mention lots of changes first time gelding puts the blinkers on this horse has been trying to get on the turf and keeps running into wet conditions and having to run on the dirt or deciding not to run on the dirt i think getting back to the turf this horse has some nice performances back in 2020 that suggests that as a four-year-old now you could see an improvement and i like the price at four to one on this horse tactical speed should been getting away well either under adam biskicha so they they they change everything up and sometimes you can read things into this i've been in this spot before you get the call out of the bullpen and it's mitch that gets called out of the bullpen today i like the move i'm going to say sitting in the in the great spot uh setting up shop just outside and making the last run just off of the pace guys all right gary thanks four to one on the stable mate of the eight to five favorite in here and gary's gonna go with a better price yeah and listen the source is taking money he did add blinkers mitchell morrow is a rider that tends to get horses more involved early in the race than adam biscuitza who has more of that european style very strong finish adam biscuits i love the way he finishes on horses but that's why you know to me it's even more problematic with the favorite the three summer palace with adam schizo aboard if he can't get that horse to get by horses and positions that look like he had to win the race i don't know that anybody can because he's one of the strongest finishers at the fairgrounds right now ricardo santana jose ortiz tyler gafflione three of the best riders in this game but they've had their opportunities on this horse yeah and you're talking about guys that know how to get every last ounce out of a horse this versus just again you they're they're personalities and they're herd animals and some of them are the dominant herd animal and some of them are very happy to run with the pack with the herd and it just feels like that and i'm not to say that this horse can't win obviously you can win and sometimes you almost got to fool them you got to get there so late that they get their head in front and then the wire comes before they have a chance to say no no wait i'll defer to you meanwhile the one we have not talked about much in here the two defied the only time he was on the turf he started out sprinting first couple of starts of his career they tried him on the turf in a summer palace race he finished two lengths behind summer palace he hit the board that was his only try on grass and he actually had a much more difficult trip i thought than summer palace did that day it was really not very much pace on and he got kind of keen up in behind horses before finally settling under sean bridgeman jimmy graham takes the call today he's definitely a player as we talk about him clicks down from 7-1 to 5-1 summer palace though remains the favorite in this spot for brendan walsh who has a pretty good older horse in handicap division as well in max field who we saw when the mine shaft he's come back as a four-year-old perfect two for two since he went to the bench yeah maxfield certainly very talented we saw a mystic guide from godolphin yesterday also extremely talented trained by michael stidham so nine to five on summer palace in here jonathan liking reigning spirit who's making those changes for al stall getting back on the grass for his four-year-old debut this on a war front this is who i liked before jonathan liked him so he gets a double check mark as far as i'm concerned either that or i'll slow him down and you see they'll kind of you know circle around on the main track until they get called to the gate to go on the turf they don't like them to continually walk on the turf because it kind of chews up the course you want to keep the course as pristine as possible it's not like europe where they're changing courses every couple of days they have to make the turf course last meanwhile go back to that nine intentional walk all the way down to five to one now we'll see if he can show the same kind of ability he was in a barn of very good trainer john service and now he moves to the barn of matt shire for his comeback as a four-year-old yeah matt schreier having a really good fairground stand this winter winning it better than 24 percent and sean bridgeman has been riding extremely well there as well slight delay not sure what's happening here at fairgrounds but they're going to make their way into that turf course here momentarily get a good look at that run up to that first turn such a long stretch of the fairgrounds greg when you turn for home you have nearly a quarter of a mile straight away to the finish and particularly in turf racing it allows guys to kind of save that ground that's so important wait and then kind of sift out and find their path to make their final run every track you know has its little corks little differences but in terms of turf courses were you rode what was maybe the one that had the most quirks riding the inner turf course at saratoga was very difficult and you had to have a specific kind of trip in the first turn and two turn races was tended to be rough and and you had to know where you were and get your position going forward and then have enough force to hold your position just because you had position didn't mean you had enough force to hold it and you get yourself in trouble and the uh turf course we have two turf courses here at aqueduct now but the seven furlong turf course which is now the inner turf course very similar to that saratoga course could be difficult particularly getting positioned into the first turn loading up here for the eighth at the fairgrounds summer palace the three remains the favorite adam biscuitza for brendan walsh who also again sends out freddie flincher his stable mate here with mitch mural as the two breaks through the gate and does not get far luckily jimmy graham able to keep him from running off jimmy grant a really good hand on a horse you have guys that are good jockeys and you got guys that are good horsemen jimmy graham is a good jockey and a good horseman certainly did a really good job there to keep the two defied from going very far down the racecourse never a great thing though you want to when that happened when you were a writer then what's your role well i mean you know as a rider you just got to deal with it now it's the hand you're dealt but it always felt like the air coming out of the balloon the horse is all tense he's puffed up he's pumped up he's ready to go breaks through the doors and kind of the air comes out of that balloon now not that horses don't win when they do that but it's never a positive we'll see if palace still to three furlongs from home leads freddy flintshire silk train has lost the spot to third defied dao strides up on the floor outside for james graham and is moving in schlievardt is right there too intentional walk-in reigning spirit those left in the running as these maidens turn for home pulled up again with struttenbuck three-quarters woman at 16 point 18 seconds summer palace freddy flintshire here's defied's run for the lead has taken over with one for long to go summer palace against the rail staying on reigning spirit from the inside freddie flincher then schlievanti rose came off a long layoff and won and she was much the horse to beat that day she's gonna have to run i think a little bit faster here but second off the bench she's very very fit she got really as well who's i'm surprised you're seeing this big a price 901 on matapan has speed can be tactical as well and is actually going to shorten up to six furlongs this afternoon seven time winner who has one on and off track yeah and obviously she's in close proximity to your favorite uh here gave her pretty much all she can handle down into inside the eighth pole so um definitely have to respect this mayor and coming off a couple of good runs one at delta downs one at fairgrounds this was in this same race last year that was won of course by by by jay and matapan gonna have to deal with her again this afternoon she put in a big run on that occasion and she's still in in very strong form but right now double her morning line yeah and and you know big field you know and steve was very forthcoming about your favorite bye bye jane not breaking well lately so he takes the blinkers off on a five-year-old mayor sometimes as they get older you want to broaden their their line of vision blinkers inhibit them that keeps them looking more forward maybe opening up the blinker should be more aware of when the break comes and like he said just changing something up sometimes horses kind of get in a rut like people we get into a routine and we kind of just you know we're not as enthusiastic do a little something different you know 100 push-ups 100 sit-ups in the morning get the blood going you know about that right or maybe just take a walk around the block something like that well sure that's a short price though to take too mig isn't it on even money on america who the last intensity on these mirrors with their ears pinned their eye almost looking behind them i think that's something you see in champions they almost have that intensity and throw it off like this aura afford to figure it out i do think this horse could get involved early what i've noticed a lot of these made in special weight races is horses that have a lot of experience who start to look as if maybe they don't want to win it's that experience can still go a long way when you're facing a bunch of horses that are first-time starters and if you look at the tote board a lot of the horses that are being bet here are horses that are first-time starters towards the outside the nine is is a first-time starter taking some money so give me the horse with some experience i also thought diamond lady had a little bit of excuse last time lost a little bit of ground the performance was better than it looks on paper and at 18 to 1 why not all right jk trying to get home a big price here coming up but we say it a lot on the board when you look at the tote board that nine horse who just left our screen especially in these races with first time starters when they're taking money on the board check in with maggie wolffendel here with brad cox as we are approaching the big dance that is the grade 3 by akoa as he'll be sending out the dual champion monomoy girl first brad talk about what this mayor has meant to you your team and your career well she got it all kicked off for us as far as competing at the grade one level for sure we had some uh near victories and grade ones but she was the one that finally got got through it in 2018 in the ashland so uh you know she's been a ton for for our whole barn uh everyone involved with her she's touched so many lives in you know a positive way so she she means a lot to us and you know surprised and fortunate to have her back at six so uh you know she basically missed all of her four-year-old years so you know she doesn't have a ton of miles on her so you know just very happy to have her back for one more year take us back to that night after the breeders cup which she sold for 9.5 million your son let her into the ring what was going through your mind and then when you had the word from spendthrift that she would be returning to your barn yeah and i was it was an amazing night you know it was amazing weekend period i mean you know i think what she was able to accomplish that saturday in the dis staff uh definitely drove her price up i mean i obviously don't know what she would have sold for if she wasn't a winner in the breeders cup and maybe we you know they they would not have decided to bring her back but you know for her to accomplish or run the way she did give you know whoever was gonna buy her the confidence to try her back this year and here we are so i'm excited now obviously there's so many things that happen in horse racing but the end goal again is at the breeders cup distaff yeah in delmar yeah i think so you know we spoke it over with spin thrift and ned toffee and eric gustafson and and you know they're on board with trying to container all year our short-term goals obviously today and then the apple blossom uh you know it's obviously one step at a time but you know that i think that's a great plan for this spring you know we'll we'll spacer races and uh you know do right by her she definitely likes time between and hopefully back to the breeders cup this fall well brad wishing you the best of luck here i i mean she just has so many fans and thank you your staff and her owners previous and current for keeping her around for us to watch thanks maggie i appreciate it all right truly a sporting team that is behind monomoy girl kicking off her six-year-old campaign here at oaklawn greg so interesting he probably thought that was it swan song breeders cup diss death she wins again and then all of a sudden she's right back in his barn a chance to win a third here in her six-year-old season and two of them on a collision course again this year obviously swiss guy divers so made about so much made about the campaign she put forth last year she's looking at a couple of spots for her return this year beholder mile one of them the azeri stakes which is the next spot that happens march 13th here at oaklawn is a possible landing spot for her come back yeah the next prep race going forward to the apple blossom so i mean great to see a four-year-old philly coming back and swiss skydiver a preakness winner taking on the six-year-old monomoy girl hopefully down the road but first let's get through the bayakoa today and you know looking at brad cox and what he's done over a pretty short period of time he's in his early 40s and he's reached this level of success and a trainer can train we see wayne lucas is in his 80s now i mean he's got so much time to keep padding this incredible resume he's already started to create yeah great position to be in here but again obviously nerves got to be a part of it when you have someone this great this talented gary for florence giroud who's going to be on board monomoy today you've been in these pressure-packed situations you've been in it with a triple crown on the line what's it like from a writer perspective there's no pressure for him today knows this philly i'm going to take you back to uh 2018. i'd won the fantasy stakes at oakland park for brad cox a really nice philly i was setting the pace in the kentucky oaks that monomoy girl wound up winning i was leading coming in uh to the stretch thought i had a chance of winning and monomoy girl ran by me so easily and she made the lead and she threw her ears straight up and i said oh man she made the lead too early johnny velasquez actually passed her and the battle was on so i i can tell you that monomoy girl learned to fight that day and she went on and she won that day and richie keeps talking about the catalin and uh her not liking the whip this philly she's a fighter she doesn't need a lot of action on top of her just pointed in the right direction she's a competitor and i think they taught each other something on that one day of the kentucky oaks and it's continued to grow he's gonna ride her with a lot of confidence and he's gonna go out there he's gonna do what's right by her as a six-year-old today and and get her to move forward you just heard what brad said the end goal is a long campaign this year i and i would say the end goal is another breeders cup championship it'd be awesome to watch i can't wait for the rest this year and i can't wait uh for you know six or seven minutes until they get out on the racetrack and we get this game game on the road it is an opportunity to watch just true greatness on the racetrack she has been one of a kind and that's why you're seeing one to nine here on monomoy girl and again if if it did have we have a we have a racetrack that's sloppy she's now a six-year-old mayor who's making her comeback start if she somehow were to lose this race um as gary was talking to i don't think it takes a lot of luster off of because the end goal even short term right now is not this race the end goal short term is that apple blossom here at this racetrack you have to remember this is a starting point yeah and i'm sure she's not cranked up to to run her very best race today your best trainers get your horse their horses to win with c efforts b efforts there's only so many a efforts in a horse obviously the better the horse the more a efforts in them but you don't want to use those races up in what we call prep races she should be good enough to win this with a subpar monument girl effort you want her at her best for the biggest dances and it's six years old she's it's a starting point so yes if she was to happen to lose i don't think that'll happen but if it does happen she loses nothing in my eyes let's get a panic report from maggie wolfendale coming to me and taking a look at monomoy girl here in the paddock you know it does not look as though she's had a break in racing it looks as though she just run possibly last month and she is so well conditioned she's so fit uh here today and what i noted from her last year when she came back as a five-year-old she was so much more relaxed there was so much more mental maturity that she possessed and we will get a quick peek at her hopefully as she comes around here i was trying to time it so i'd talk about her and she'd be right behind me but you know best laid plans but here she is and you know i was talking to brad cox back at the barn about her and he said you know nothing bothers her she's so calm in the paddock and it almost makes you a little worried and that she's kind of has that weirdness in the best way possible and he said those really good horses you would think they just would take everything in stride and they're just forward the really really good ones they have their quirks and well that's monomoy girl and this is what i've seen from her throughout last year and into this year she looks ready to go but i will say finite as we heard from steve asmussen earlier here on the show he's felt pretty confident in number three finite and her chances and coming back to the races off of that fourth place finish in the la brea she has done well i mean the last time i saw her albeit was uh two years ago as a two-year-old so she's changed completely she's so much bigger she's so much longer in her frame she's ten times more athletic looking so while i thought that going back to when she was younger i didn't think she wanted to run long now this amount of 16 seems very much well within her wheelhouse she looks fantastic this is the best i have ever observed from finite here and she looks like a happy horse too now another broad she is an outsider albeit for steve as well and i thought she had a little bit of a trip last time you know she was stuck down on the rail at laurel never where you want to be and then when she got out and in the clear she ran on a little bit she'll be picking up the pieces late primarily she knows she's so laid back she doesn't possess that early speech she never really breaks that sharply but i will say in a positive note physically she has put on some weight some conditioning all things you like to see with your six-year-old mares greg maggie thank you there's another broad the two the only time she won a stakes race he was on a muddy track in the top flight at a mile on an eighth back in 2019. yeah and she's very accomplished on a wet track six starts on wet tracks four wins the second and the third and joel rosario who went in yesterday to ride jackie's warrior first steve esperson stays over for this to to take a shot at the champion i don't see her getting beat but it is a horse race one to nine favorite how do you play a race like this i know jonathan monomoy girl holds a special place in your heart she does uh last year the breeders cup betting challenge i got second place and it was in part to a 40 000 win bet on monomoy girl so you're right she does hold a special place in my heart but um you know look that was then this is now i still think she's the winner here but i think there's a lot of things you have to be concerned about one this is not the goal we're talking about one of the greatest female horses to ever run this is not where they brought her back for it's an exciting race because she's in it but other than that the the bayakova was not on their schedule when they paid 9.5 million dollars and decided to run her as a six-year-old i'm also a little bit concerned about the racetrack she's had one experience over a sloppy racetrack and that was a win off of a long layoff it wasn't very impressive but i think the layoff probably had more to do with that and there hasn't been a lot of people in her family that have run that well on off tracks it doesn't matter she's supposed to win this race despite the surface but it is something to take into account if you're trying to get creative and find a way to beat her the other horse i think that's interesting in here underneath is the four iston council sources run two times off of a break this will be the third start a lot of times conventional wisdom will tell you that that third start off a layoff is the one that you you'll get a horse's best performance so maybe istan council is the one you want to use underneath in x-actos and trifectas jk thanks and you know to that point of what jk was talking about with the off track in monomoy girl the exception of the first two starts of her career that came on turf and i know it was our first start off on 18 month layoff so we can probably forgive it but it was a sloppy track at churchill it was the lowest buyer speed figure she's ever produced on dirt yeah but i i attribute that more to coming off a very long layoff sure and she was carefully handled that day by florent giroud that was certainly a big stepping off point coming off that extended layoff this time i mean she has much more recency she ran in november that's not even a layoff compared to you know what she was coming off of that day um so i i do think you'll see a better performance but it is a fair you know uh statement observation yeah just throwing it out there for what it's worth here's the two this is another broad that was the top flight winner steve asmussen part of a pair of phillies and mirrors he's sending out this more highly regarded one right here finite who last year you know at the end of our two-year-old campaign into her three-year-old season last year she was the top for a moment the top three-year-old feeling in the country yeah i mean she really threw some good races together and uh certainly a player this stan council looked phenomenal walking out of the paddock 42-1 everyone an inflated price as you take a look at the champ right there the two-time champion monomoy girl coming onto the track because of her presence everyone just a massive price on the board and a good look there at that race track listed as sloppy right now yeah they've just had so much inclement weather down there in hot springs arkansas and they seem to have the track in really good shape considering what they've had to deal with post parade coming up and if you're again flarangerou and you know your job you know how this racetrack's been playing it seems like she's in perfect position to do what he wants to do but what's your game plan out of the gate well you want to break cleanly make sure she gets her feet up underneath her and if nobody goes allow her to stride out and take the lead control the race but i'd be staying out five six wide i wouldn't even think about heading towards the fence in any circumstance that's been the case all afternoon long all weekend long with the weather we've seen in hot springs arkansas and we're going to kick things off here in the post parade in just a moment with a big long shot chance to shine with a race like this too when you have such a massive favorite and someone of her stature are they going to gang up on you a little bit you know in a bigger field and maybe a different post position drawer i could see that happening i just don't see a scenario that happens here 51-1 on this five-year-old mayor for chris hartman chance to shine yeah her best races have been on synthetic and or turf she's up against it here another broad it's been a long time since she's once she has one of the best riders in the country aboard one of the best riders in the country hall of fame trainer and she loves wet going here's the stable mate and more highly regarded finite a five time stakes winner five-time stakes winner six for 12 lifetime has one on the wet and is very accomplished 33-1 on east end council for larry jones and joe talamo aboard she's also accomplished in the wet and she looks phenomenal in the flesh she really could not be better turned out meanwhile 21-1 on a daughter a mine shaft this five-year-old mirror our super freak who does own a victory on and off track and she has speed if they want to use it she you know raided last time but she has the ability to go to the front too and i think if anybody leads monologue girl early it'll be our super freak and impressions here of the two-time champ here's one of my girl she looks very fit maggie said it she didn't look like she's coming off any sort of a layoff she looks great and composed on the track and i'm just you know excited as a fan at the heart of it we're all fans and these are the kind of horses that made us fans to begin with one to nine favorite she's back for a six-year-old season trying to win a third championship you saw her go through that sales ring 9.5 million dollars in connection say let's bring her back one more time this was her last race a second victory in the breeders cup distract doing it from an outside post and powering home down the stretch to an impressive win and just me watching her and her demeanor she kind of waits on horses a little bit kind of looks around where's my competition always feels like she's got more in the tank if she needs it that she can reach down and find some more that was a pretty comfortable length and three-quarter win as well it really was um and again she's one that you don't have to override she's generous she's going to give it to you you don't want to you know punish her for giving you her best close to post time soon they'll load let's go back to gary stevens here and gary get in the mindset here of of the riders in this race and specifically floren giroux well greg richie i i just noticed something in this post parade uh the swagger of monomoy girl uh with her strut just walking and being ready uh for the the duties at hand she's not sweating anything and i can guarantee you that florent giroud is not sweating anything either she is prepared she's ready you give her the same type of warm up that you normally give her and he is confident well within himself right now my belief is that that she's handled the off track already once granted the speed number the buyer figure was not one of her highest maybe that was by design i throw that out the window as a jockey when i look at that stuff i throw it out i put it out of my mind florenza rue has put that out of his mind right now all eyes are are his brain and eyes are the starting gate getting a clean break as richie said getting around that first turn in good order getting her feet up underneath her and he is completely focused right now not only for today but her whole 2021 campaign and it starts right here there she is one to nine favorite let's head back to maggie wolfendale and watching these horses warm up today taking a look at the champ monomoy girl she is moving so well she's moving great over this sloppy sealed racetrack uh i cannot fault her whatsoever but she is a mare that has that tactical early speed but i think that the horse that you guys obviously were mentioning will be on the front end is number five in here our super freak who was the only horse to be turned away immediately from the lead pony by david cohen really vigorous and animated gallop over to the far turn here so she is sharp he really got the blood flowing with her too she'll be looking to possibly she can steal it on the front end and the record the wet track record speaks for itself for number two another broad but just to kind of compound that fact is the way she was moving out here i mean she just skips over this wet surface so she is one that's not nearly as good as monomoy girl but because of the wet track i think she could run a little bit better greg maggie thanks she had four for six record on the off track for that this two the six-year-old mirror another broad who you're looking at you know it's interesting steve ashmuston trains the two another broad he trains the three finite for the winchell family monomoy girls sire tapazar steve asmussen trained for the winchell family who owned and bred him so his fingerprint is all over this race but he's trying to beat the champ and you know we give so many props to to to spend thrift who are bringing this just once in a lifetime mayor back for another season but you got to give hats off too to the connections that are lining up against her a lot of times in this sport you see people stay away from one to nine favorites and let alone champions so credit to everyone else who showed up in this race you know no doubt but again it's a great at stake it's a grade three when we talk about black type from errors it's that bolder type on sales catalog pages it enhances their values and enhances their falls values so it's important for these mayors to even get placed in these kind of races so that when they have falls in the breeding shed again it enhances their value starting point for monomoy comes here and obviously the target we know short term is that april 17th apple blossoms she could actually wind up facing her stablemate she dares the devil the surprise kentucky oaks winner uh in that spot as well potentially swiss skydiver we'll see but it's gonna be fun to see how they sort of map out this year to try and get to the breeders cup again yeah and gary said something very prophetic before that they probably start with the breeders cup and work their way backwards and figure out the preps they need to get there the two-time champion back for a run at a third championship season and another win in the breeders cup distract there she is it's the grade 3 by akoa on fox sports 1 vic stopper with the call they're at the post they're off perfect start chance to shine broke well our super freak finite between horses monomoy girl is into the bit early she will be no better than three or four wide at the clubhouse turn as finite has the lead monomy girl is outside of our super freak and she sits third at this point from istan council chance to shine is taken back and the trailer is another broad as they turn into the back stretch in the 29th running of the bayakoa and finite will be the leader it is finite just a length in front of our super freak in second two time champion monomoy girls sits in third she's in the clear and less than two whenever i want hang on for the final eighth of a mile and she strutted herself stuff in the final eighth of a mile and uh i'm really pleased with what i saw for her first start of 2021 guys almost as if she's saying yeah i got this don't worry yeah i think as riders sometimes we tend to start worrying and the horse is kind of like gary silly just relax i got this we're good we're good it's got to be incredible to have that feeling too to be on some of this kind of talent and in terms of looking at florence rue and what he did in here obviously late in the race he didn't have to do much no and again he kind of kept it to her task because her ears did come up a couple times where she was losing her focus and you don't want a horse to completely shut down but she won with something left and she's so good she's kind of like you know go over those horses you know pretty easily and uh the most part is trying to keep her busy all the way to the wire what has it been like for you to be on he's got so much confidence in her now and the fact that they've kind of gone through this experience a couple of times now it gives them the opportunity maybe just to take a little bit of a breath not completely but a little bit one to five month boy girl gets it done in the comeback for her six-year-old and likely final campaign jonathan kinchin what would you think i mean i think that uh one of dynamite and i loved everything i saw about him yesterday i think his future is great i think he's going to improve upon this race i love that he ran on the muddy racetrack he's tractable he has speed he's tractable he listens and he loves to get into it when the going gets tough that's an important point gary brought up as well proved he can win on an off going you can get rain that first saturday in may at churchill downs yeah absolutely and and what gary said talking about his versatility and you know when you talk about a horse gary said it he's not very big but he's so incredibly excellent performances and uh when i was back at brad cox barn i got to meet both of the champs obviously modern war girl before she ran she was feisty and just wanted no part of saying hi she wanted to get out there and do her thing or she wanted mints but essential quality he as you guys were saying he's incredibly balanced and athletic and like i said he grows a bit once he gets the tackle and he knows what his job is he is all about his business i love the fact that too at the barn today just resting peacefully in his stall but the champ the dual champ returning to the races today she is just i think she's just really smart and and we saw that she while she's you know a good teammate of laurent giroux that she doesn't really need to be told what to do she knows what she's doing out there and it speaks of her greatness and we're just so so lucky to see her back at the races and as you guys have said numerous times on the show so sporting of the connections and a brilliant training job by brad cox with both of his champions he has a lot to look forward to uh in the coming months here of 2021. greg yeah thanks maggie great job all weekend long reporting out there in hot springs arkansas and we said it a lot a lot of pressure on brad cox with two champions coming back but if you're in this game that's exactly what you want you'd rather be in that position than scrapping and trying to get horses that could win at that level and he just does such a good job and his horses are so well prepared and they it shows on the racetrack by their physical uh you know presence they just look fantastic meanwhile down in florida we talked about it on the show yesterday a hall of fame trainer who does not put a horse on the triple crown trail unless he knows that horse has the ability to win it and greatest honor he believes has that ability and backed it up again in the fountain of youth and has that closing style which doesn't always you know serve horses well at gulfstream although i thought the track was very fair there yesterday but i like this horse he just keeps showing up with his run he's figured the game out look at how covered in dirt he is he'll run through the kickback and he drops his head and he finishes and i certainly believe he'll get every bit of the mile and a quarter in the kentucky derby and beyond there were moments his trainer suge magahi was in this race he was very worried says oh boy we're not going to get it done and then when he swung to the outside and he got in the clear he really kicked it in and suge is very happy he's not going to have to go a mile on 16th anymore yeah because he's going to appreciate more and more ground and uh sigma he does not send the horses to the kentucky derby unless they belong 10th and final at oaklawn on what has been a tremendous weekend one mile here money earned allowance and it's wildwoods beauty the four who is the favorite coming off a big big number that she ran sprinting though six furlongs last time out at oakland yeah and that's the thing she's got to stretch to a mile does that intensify her kick or does it actually hurt her chances what about the two slight delay here and as we heard from big stopper it's with the five grayson's macho gal who's acting up in the gate and they're trying to looks like take her back there walk around a little bit and calm her down and also they look like they backed out the six horse as well josie sometimes when a horse acts up next to another horse they'll inadvertently kick the other horse in the stall so they'll be checked out by the attending track veterinarian to make sure that they're both okay before they're either scratched or put back in the gate meanwhile how difficult is that for the rest of this field who's patiently waiting all this time well you know thankfully it's older phillies and mares so they have more experience they'll tend to hold their cool a little bit more than younger less experienced horses but it's never a good thing the longer you're in the gate the less ideal it is you you want to get in and out of there as fast as possible so waiting on the 5-6 and then that outside run of the 12 miss moon pie to step in as again the majority of this field locked and loaded and ready to go and we don't have a great vantage point to see what's happening here with grayson's macho gal now being told it has been scratched so the five is coming out and wait and see what they're going to do here in terms of the field if they just leave that space empty which looks like they may do yeah and they're going to run it here we go vic stopper with the call the nightcap from oakland off wildwoods beauty and lady mackenzie break well miss moonpie in the center between horses goes mocha kiss and there goes miss moonpie from her outside gate to try to get to the front and she's got the job done miss moonpie crosses and clears and can pick her path wildwood's beauty and lady mackenzie second and third then aura to the outside followed by josie the gray and at the rail goes she's all wolf so they run to the back stretch with miss moonpie the leader she's two lengths in front of wildwood's beauty and at the rail lady mackenzie then comes aura and she's all wolf josie's the gray mid pack and about five from the front she's a length in front of glamour girl then comes escape fund followed by at the rail and mocha kiss and it's two and a half lengths back to the two trailers who are auction fever and hashtag winner so they run into the far turn and now the lead for miss moonpie is only a half length as lady mackenzie moves through from the inside meanwhile wildwood's beauty is in good striking position and here's glamour girl to race up three wide and glamour girls in good striking position as well we're gonna have a new leader around the far turn i think it'll be wild woods beauty who puts her head in front josie is moving from the center of the race track and there goes josie to take over a second then comes glamour girl in third they're at the top of the stretch gl wildwoods beauty and josie these two off the top of the turn and josie has taken the lead wildwood's beauty is battling in second then it's two back two miss moonpie glamour girl and auction fever but josie is clear coming to the wire and it is josie josie beat wildwood's beauty
