two weeks ago at CES AMD showed us their new ryzen 7 8700g Apu be with you in a second and they told us you can play triaa games at 1080p on the Apu no graphics card required and I thought that's quite a bold claim I look forward to seeing that not you understand in a test [Music] room but in my own environment at home and you know what they were quite [Music] correct Estus for Leo not only can I play Dark Souls 3 on medium settings at 1080p as you can see no graphics card in the PC I'm actually powering two monitors the monitor you can see and the one I'm looking at so this Apu is running two monitors in I consider it to be at least a decent quality game maybe not AAA these days get in before you transforms and kill kill kill and the frame rate 60 FPS right let's shut this down and I can talk to you and give you my undivided [Music] attention the PC I was playing Dark Souls 3 on is the simp simplest PC I've built in many a long year took me moments to put together the parts involved we have the processor sent To Us by AMD memory sent by AMD and motherboard sent by AMD the case is a fractal design measi 2 Compact and the power supply is this seic Focus GX th000 rated gold and it's atx3 and I can tell you here and I can tell you now that cic was not working hard for a living the cooler on the processor is an AMD wraith so it is the boxed cooler that is supplied with the CPU as you can see in the main compartment there's very little to see a motherboard assembly obviously no graphics card a small air cooler and let's take a look around the back the bare minimum of cable mess we have the stock case fans that come with the fractal I don't think they're entirely necessary and now you can see it's an absolute barebones PC one thing you might be wondering is why is this system so large the motherboard supplied by AMD is this MSI b650 gaming plus Wi-Fi and it's an ATX board costs around 150 I would have much preferred to had a Micro ATX board to show off the PO itial of an APU system you can make it more compact here we have a meshify 2 mini for comparison why not save yourself a couple of inches on the height and a few liters on volume in an Ideal World I'd like this system to be Mini ITX but that costs I've looked around I can find a couple of motherboards that are socket am5 of course that means they support ddr5 and those boards cost £250 I've also looked upstream and I've found boards costing £500 in mini ITX so £250 for Mini ITX £150 for this ATX let's remove the motherboard assembly eight screws out and there we have the guts of the system and as you can see I'm using a thermalite contact frame because they are dirt cheap costing less than £10 and I think they help thermals certainly they look smart and I cannot see a downside to using a contact frame apart from that trivial cost clean off the thermal compound and there we have it ryzen 7 8700g and you might be wondering what on Earth is a ryzen 7 8700g and that's a very good question at CES 2023 AMD announced their Phoenix range of mobile processors and these new ryzen 8 000g apus are Phoenix processors in desktop form as we can see when we look inside these new processors we have an npu which is an AI engine using AMD xdna we have a CPU based on AMD zen4 technology and we have a GPU which is AMD rdna 3 technology there are four processors in the family the ryzen 78700 G that we're looking at here 8 coree 16 threads 65 W TD p and the graphics are AMD radian 780m the US price without tax is $329 stepping down we have the ryzen 58600 G 6 cores 12 threads again 65 wats and now we have radan 760m Graphics the price a lot cheaper at $229 and then we have the ryzen 58500 G and has radian 740m Graphics there's a fourth option the ryzen 3 8 300g however that's only for system integrators and we won't see that in retail this table from the review guide breaks down the Technologies further so we can see for the ryzen 78700 G and the ryzen 58600 g the spec of the graphics we can also see when we look down at the ryzen 58500 G this part does not have the ryzen AI npu engine and neither does the ryzen 3 you can also see how the cores are arranged the top two parts are both pure zen4 on 4 nanometer the ryzen 58500 years is a combination two zen4 cores and four baby zen4 C cores the ryzen 380 300g has one zen4 core and three zen4 C's moving further to the right we can see PCI Express Gen 4 support on the top two parts it's full support for a full fat graphics card the bottom two parts have restricted PCI Express support AMD then makes claims about how the integrated Graphics in these apus can deliver full HD gaming 60fps without a graphics card clearly this is on low image quality settings but that is quite a claim and that in turn means these parts are cheap $329 for the ryzen 78 700g with radan 780m Graphics alternatively you buy a budget core i53 400f and you add a g41 1650 graphics card to get similar [Music] [Music] performance to put amd's claims to the test we obviously need a comparison and I've gone for a core I 514 600k there's a good reason why AMD is using core i5 13400 F in those figures and it's down to cost and also power rating if you put a full fat processor up against an APU which is limited on power that's a bit nonsensical however we don't yet have low power 14th gen processors I actually have some coming to me very shortly so what I've done is I've taken the i51 14600 K which typically operates at just over 150 watts Under full load it's a brilliant processor did very well in my recent review when I was looking at some Gab motherboards in fact I think this very gigabyte motherboard the processor for this test I've restricted I've let it boost to 95 watts and then pull back to 65 after but a few seconds and that makes it comparable to the AMD which is rated at 65 Watts but actually takes 88 Watts the motherboard is a gigabyte z790 aurus Elite ax for memory and the memory is really important for the AMD setup we were sent by AMD this trident Z5 Neo RGB which is Expo uh rather than XMP and rated at 6,400 megga transfers 32 GB dual Channel this kit on the Intel setup is very similar Trident Z5 it's rated at 6800 but I've restricted it to 6400 and that is XMP profile I've used the AMD wraith cooler which comes with the processor with the Apu in the Box for the Intel I'm using this rm1 cooler I had on the Shelf it's actually far better than it looks has a solid copper core I haven't mentioned ssds so far m.2 mvme in both cases and they are fast Sabin rocket 4 plus so Gen 4 also you will note I'm using a thermalite contact frame in both instances on low power processors it's not necessary it's really for higher power but I like them they work well and we are keeping the playing field just as level as possible and let's look at some benchmarks starting with pure CPU tests cinebench R23 multicore as we can see really high power processors are up in the 35 and 40,000 territory our two CPUs are way down the chart our ryzen 7 8700g scoring about 17,700 while the restricted power core I 514 600k scored just over 177,000 when it comes to power consumption these two CPUs are drawing next to nothing our Core i5 is restricted to a mere 65 Watts the ryzen 78700 G on a nominal 65 wats actually pulls 88 Watts underload 7zip bench mark is much like cinebench the restricted power core I 514 600k close to the bottom of the chart just above it the ryzen 7 8700g a 64 memory bandwidth traditionally Intel does well in this test and obviously the faster the memory the higher the bandwidth the ryzen 7 8700g with a dddr 56400 does quite well in this test however it is bested by the core I 513 600k operating on the same memory as we can see the ryzen 7 8700g performs in much the same way as the other AMD processors read is good and right is very good and then we move on to gaming Borderlands 3 and direct EX 11 mode and we're operating at 1080p at the top of the chart we have the core I 514 600k with an addin radian RX 6500 XT 4 GB that's a 150 graphics card on the medium preset we're averaging 94 FPS the ryzen 78700 G with the same graphics card also on medium only manages 76 FPS if we up the setting to the badass preset the cor 514 600k with the rad graphics card manages 44 interestingly the next entry in this chart is the ryzen 7 8700g running on the Apu Graphics at medium preset it manages 39 FPS below that we have the ryzen 7 Apu with the addin graphics on badass running at 33 FPS after that we have the ryzen 7 Apu with the integrated graphics on the higher setting at 24 FPS at the very bottom of the chart you can see what happens to Intel when you take out the graphics card and run the integrated UHD Graphics 770 it does function but the scores are terrible Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy the integrated Graphics won't operate in this game so both of the tests are run with the addin graphics card at the top we have the core I 514 600k with the graphics card very high preset 42 FPS and then we have the ryzen 7 8700g with the graphics card also very high preset 40 FPS the 1% low is significantly worse than the Intel Far Cry 6 at 1080p direct X1 mode at the top we have for core i5 with the add-in graphics card medium preset 78 FPS ryzen 78700 G with the radian graphics card also medium preset 67 FPS then we have the core i5 with the adding graphics card on Ultra at 59 FPS and then the AMD the Apu with the add-in graphics card on Ultra at 41 FPS significantly worse than Intel moving on to the integrated Graphics we have the AMD Apu with the radan 78m graphics on medium preset managing 40 FPS behind that we have the Apu with integrated Graphics running on Ultra at 33 FPS this time Intel on the integrated UHD Graphics 770 manages slightly better than before but we're still talking 15 and 10 FPS respect effectively and finally we have Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080P and direct X12 mode at the top of the chart the core I 514 600k with addin Graphics medium preset 97 FPS the AMD ryzen 7 8700g with the add-in graphics on medium 90 FPS stepping up to highest preset Intel at 72 FPS and the AMD at 62 FPS and then we move on to the integrated Graphics ryzen 78 700g with a 780m graphics on on medium 38 FPS bump up the setting to highest preset 33 FPS once again Intel with a UHD Graphics 770 Trails behind on 16 and 13 FPS [Music] respectively let's return to Dark Souls 3 and let's talk about what I think about the ryzen 7 8700 years as a gaming platform using the integrated graphics and you may be wondering why is Leo running around at such an early level in this game the answer is I play Dark Souls 3 and other games on PlayStation 5 I only installed this game on my PC for this review hence I'm at a very early level and I found it rather more challenging than I expected I thought I'd just zoom through the early levels but oh no you can see that although the AMD graphics drivers have all sorts of clever Technologies to improve your gameplay it is obvious that the GPU is pegged close to 100% while the CPU is practically idling the graphics in this ryzen 7 are absolutely the limiting factor and that applies whether or not we're playing on low or medium quality settings and this required me to re-calibrate my brain slightly with PlayStation 5 and yes I know that's also an AMD Apu it is responsive Snappy and instantaneous here I sometimes had difficulty killing a character that was stationary it would seem my brain re-calibrated and I adjusted my game play slightly to suit the Apu and I made my way through a handful of battles while the game play looks good and the image quality is absolutely fine for my eyes it was still a slightly difficult process and not the same as a console or a more high powered gaming PC and this gives me mixed feelings on the one one hand I'm impressed the ryzen 78700 G Apu is able to play Dark Souls 3 at 1080p on the other hand the gaming experience was not quite as good as it might have been and I died even more frequently than usual so what do I think of the ryzen 78700 G let's start with my pros and cons pros the good points the radian 780m Graphics are the best Apu Graphics we've ever seen no argument there hands down a winner the ryzen 78700 G specifically gives you a relatively cheap way to start 1080p PC gaming I.E you don't need a graphics card and I've demonstrated that and you get an AI engine in the processor because it is a laptop chip in desktop form I've barely mentioned AI or the xdna engine and that's because at the moment frankly there doesn't seem to a huge number of applications that you can do on your own PC as opposed to you know AI I cloud services undeniably this is going to be a thing of the near future and forever more Microsoft's co-pilot for example it's here already and it's not going away so AI is going to be unavoidable Hardware in your own PC or laptop or phone is going to be welcome cons the negative points Apu systems are effectively limited to ATX and microatx because mini ITX motherboards cost a load I mean obviously you can build a mini ITX system around this Apu but what's the point if you're going down that route you might as well put a graphics card in it already spending money spend more money have a better system budget graphics cards can get really noisy uh it's something I'd almost forgotten the 150 RX 6500 XT I was using when it was hoing away it made a racket because of course the cooler is a cheap piece of Hardware I'm sure Dominic suffers from this all the time but it's a while since I've had to endure it so if you do put a budget graphics card in your PC bear that in mind and finally if you use a GPU I.E you're not using the essence of the Apu the core I 514 600k is a better choice than this particular ryzen 7 even when you limit the power and that's the fundamental problem I've got here if you know you're Building A system that is never going to have a graphics card this is a brilliant piece of Hardware love it to bits if you're building a PC with the expectation you'll spend some money on a graphics card in the future then perhaps literally this hardware and the case and the power supply is all you can afford say £800 you can't stretch to a, I appreciate that we've all been there in which case this is a good choice but if you can stretch that bit further beg borrow steel from your friend friends and family and you get even a budget graphics card then to my mind this Apu is a really curious Choice as an APU it's excellent as a CPU it's not that brilliant and that makes it a really Niche product for people are going to game on the integrated Graphics the 780m GPU it's really good frankly it's overpowered for regular desktop use it is a budget gaming chip within a CPU so while I'm impressed by it it's also relatively hard to recommend I'm going to say it's a worth buying but it's only worth buying for certain [Music] people
