hey guys guess where we are we are still in Cambodia we're going to show you more of the Cambodian Countryside and we are in the village of Mitri about uh 50 kilometers away from Siem Reap uh heading north west on Route 6 almost to Thailand uh it's a very poor farming village where they do a lot of fishing and they grow a lot of rice right now it's the dry season so there's not a lot going on because there's no water so there's no rice or fish so uh yeah come along and join us sure we'll walk house to house talk to people see what they do see what it looks like I love the countryside so let's start awesome [Music] day I call these ones Robo cows a robo cow because it replaces uh what used to be a cow a buffalo yeah I've noticed the cows are thinner than in other countries these ones look better than the cows we see in siemery yeah real well taken care of clean yeah they do look quite clean this house must be one of the newer ones because it really stands out look at it it's all brick yeah oh it's brick yeah the older houses you'll see like uh this one behind us right how the top part of the house is wood okay so that was a wooden stilted house and the stilts would have been down here but now that the family's bigger and they have money then they build bricks on the bottom to make it a two-story house right so the flood is no longer an issue yeah because they built everything up and now they have drainage and irrigation which they didn't have before yeah [Applause] am I invited to the pool party a lot of people in this Village speak Thai because they go to Thailand to work because it's not not far from here yeah let's look at some of the street food yeah let's look at the street food I believe uh these are the duck duck fetus egg so inside here has a partially developed uh duck fetus uh these look like maybe pork sticks it looks like pork we got some hot dog kind of looking things sometimes they have chicken butts I'm trying to see if I could find any chicken butts they're actually pretty good but it's something that you have to try once in your life I think don't forget about it yeah probably I mean the cambodians sit down and eat like four or five of these together as a little wow so a little bit of bird feathers and feet I'm gonna be okay I hope I'm gonna be okay sure this is a popular sauce they give you know what it's not as bad as I thought it would be yeah like I said if you if you see what it is when you hear what it is it's kind of gross but other than that it's just exactly right even this portion right there like if you were to see that yeah it's like a hard-boiled egg so stiff yeah so much stiffer than an egg exactly oh yeah like a really hard-boiled egg potentially yes soft bones it's probably really healthy for you yeah look at the inside of the shell wow pretty crazy did you say they didn't have electricity some years some years ago yeah even just maybe six years ago uh we would use candles and uh oil lanterns now it's all changing yeah fans we have fans now yeah absolutely still no air conditioning but at least we got fans and honestly I was surprised to sell people driving SUVs and pickup trucks that means some people got a little bit of money yeah this is what fascinates me just seeing random mango trees so if you want gasoline but don't know how much you can buy it by the bottle [Music] [Laughter] oh hell don't drink it this is not Fanta so what was it like when you first came here it was exciting it was there was a lot of things I learned it was the right season because it was the middle of the rainy season so they're harvesting rice and planting rice and hello I think this is one of the village drunks I can tell by those eyes these are kind of cool you could talk about this guy's tattoos yeah so he was most likely a soldier in the war and uh when the soldiers I don't know if it's in training or one but they get these tattoos from a monk okay and it's protection tattoos so it might be like protection from bullets or protection from land mines or protection from a knife okay oh here's another one [Laughter] hey welcome to the Cambodian Countryside that's a Warren welcome no you're fast afford to buy a whole entire soda they might only have a hundred real or 200 real or 500 reel so they could just buy a single cup full of uh one of the sodas it's questionable if it's going to be fizzy or not who knows how long it's been out but right something sweet kids love sweet stuff here who doesn't yeah exactly you know I'm surprised to see all these houses in a in a typical regular Village in Cambodia you know when I was going to Cambodia everybody was telling me man is dirt poor so I was expecting a lot a picture that was going to be a lot worse so I don't know I kind of like it what do you think I love it here yeah well you load here I mean you've lived here for years this is a spirit house and this is where people come to pray and they come in here in the morning and they'll burn incense and they have these little cups that they'll fill full of tea and they say a prayer for the ghosts or spirits that are flying around here they want to keep them happy that's why they build these houses so Al you still eat those exotic tropical fruit yes definitely uh things like mangoes uh I have about five mango trees at home so to be able just to walk out to my garden pick a mango from a tree and eat it is pretty awesome yeah I have a pineapple it's only like this big it's probably going to be like the world's smallest pineapple but I'm excited to eat it because I I grew it [Music] so Pagoda is like a local church right yeah um yeah it's where the community comes to pray and it's a very Community centered place and the nice thing about traveling is there's been a few times where I was traveling and I didn't have anywhere to stay in the middle of nowhere No guest houses and stopped at a pagoda and you can either put your hammock between a couple of trees or even one monk invited me to his house and he slept on the hammock outside and let me sleep on his bed which I thought was a pretty awesome experience well that's kind of cool carved into the treat tree root like that let's take up the shoes let's walk inside all these vibrant colors I think it's whatever we've been growing up with you know that's what you depict mostly you know I Come From Russia so mostly it's white and black and gray come on oh good one great childhood girls are sitting over here watching everyone everyone wow [Music] [Music] hell don't you think people are happier with a simpler life absolutely I think life with less expectations uh uh is better you don't have to worry about needing more things or wanting more things you spend time with your friends and your family and you smile and make jokes together and enjoy life not as much competition everything's everything's pretty much going according to plan right yeah it's all family it's all friends the job is guaranteed there's a field yeah yeah exactly here's some seeds plant it these guys are so happy Food Water Shelter yeah what else we need hello oh look at this lady getting her hair done oh let's take a look whoa nice [Music] thank you [Applause] all good all good yeah thank you [Music] that's how you keep a whole village entertained just flying a drone and kids running after it so much fun look at that [Music] there it is you almost got it almost got it [Music] like a pro [Music] wow I am done now what happened [Music] so what do we have for dinner so tonight we're having uh some steamed rice probably local rice it's produced just behind our house from one of these farmers I think this is some liver maybe I'll turn my light on you can maybe see it better so we have a little bit of liver I believe that is okay and then something else underneath which I'm not quite sure maybe more intestines yeah we've got some fish and then we got some fried fish and cabbage and cucumbers this is a fish sauce with maybe some shallots warm beers and ice cubes yeah what else do you want that's perfect I really enjoying the local hospitality they cooked a lot of food for us and we seem to be enjoying it very well [Laughter] yeah yeah [Music] I can hear the music hello hello hello hello hello [Music] that's that's the Cambodian thing to do [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all right results good morning Village [Music] good morning Village [Music] Google okay come on [Music] we have no idea what's going on it's a part of the story yesterday and just continues drinking rice wine vodka uh probably stronger wow those guys are getting drunk in the morning at seven o'clock in the morning welcome to Country Style all right we figured out it was a housewarming party and it's a party that don't stop they literally parted till like three in the morning and today I woke up at six and there was already loud music going on so it's like ain't no party like a Cambodian party because the Cambodian party don't stop [Music] um foreign [Music] so I don't know what it's really where it stems from but a lot of the older people here will have some scars on their stomach the parents I believe burned there's their child uh with a cigarette you can see this this guy here has this one here and here and here yeah maybe makes him strong as a child I don't know total right pain yeah maybe okay he was so young he doesn't even remember okay I just couldn't imagine doing that to my own child like I don't know let's burn my kid to make them stronger I don't know that's some serious fish right there look at you Al you lost all the cows I think I'm going to give up on those ones I think we'll have to reconsider your job as a Shepherd yeah I think that's why they need a dog right your skills are questionable hmm [Applause] when it comes to Cambodian economy it's known for textiles it's known for farming and of course Agriculture and right now we're on the countryside look how green it is but matter of fact right now is a dry season and the wet season will start from June and probably about November and everything will look just as beautiful as that Green Field the rice field well enough of that talk let's go okay being a Shepherd is a tough job I'll tell you that I lost all my cattle I don't know if I'm gonna be fired or not [Music] laughs [Music] [Applause] [Music] hell I find this just fascinating now the story you told me how you met these people you don't even share the same language and you've been friends with them for years now and they've been so welcoming how did that happen well I used to play a game called the get lost game how I would drive my motorbike into the countryside until I'm completely lost and then try to find my way back and I was out in this Village and it started to rain and there was a little shelter here with a little shop and they graciously let me inside their little shop and just became really good friends with them visited Emory every weekend and they accepted me as part of their family wow even today 10 years later where my Kamaya is still a little bit better yeah I still really can't have a fluid conversation with them but every time I come here it's like the Ritz Carlton for us it's just yeah they roll out the red carpet they cook dinner for us they cook breakfast for us and they just lovely people and what's that word they use uh sorry means happy you know it's all about being happy and uh walking around this Village I see that people are just happy simple life but very very happy now how does that work they have a house and then they have a like a small grocery store yeah there's a lot of houses in this Village have a little shop in front where they sell gasoline they can sell uh some cookies some snacks some beer they might even cook something there's a restaurant a small restaurant just down here okay but they also sell gasoline and things in front I always wonder about competition yeah because if everyone's selling the same things who comes to the shops to buy stuff just your next door neighbors I guess because they don't get very many tourists out here so you're you're one of the few yeah I'm the second one yeah pretty much here's a petrol station gasoline so this is gasoline by the leader and uh yeah a little funnel with the strainer get your gas we got shampoo for black hair to keep your hair black actually these are some lotions some washing liquid for your clothes some snacks some juices they like these this is a combination between juice and soy milk the kids love like the combination this is orange and soy they got balloons always a kid's favorite it's nice and simple now let's take a look at the house so yeah when I first came here this was just a typical stilt brick house or still wooden house within the last maybe a year they started to put the brick bottom on it which looks really nice I slept down here last night it was pretty cool uh come inside and we can see the bathroom the shower area yeah here's a very simple type of Cambodian bathroom and shower so the toilet's over here and then as you saw this morning or last night when you took a shower you just fill up the bucket like this and take a shower yeah so simple it gets the job done [Music] yeah take off your shoes okay on the steps very steep Cambodian steps yeah up to the top and we see the sleeping quarters last night yeah your your bed is here I'll tell you it was comfortable nice fan yeah the fan was so helpful it was the next best thing to air conditioning this very typical of a Cambodian family there's usually not very much in the house that's the extent of their mattress in their bed this is their simple wardrobe where they keep their clothes and then these are probably some of the family members that passed away and um and they have this little Shrine sort of dedicated to them while they'll burn incense and uh just give respect to the elders that died absolutely then they have a hammock two hammocks matter of fact almost left in that one last night hammocks are so popular here so the reason why I slept downstairs last night is because the position of this hammock if I sit like this just isn't really it's like I'm sitting it's not really a sleeping sleeping position it was great with the fan but uh I need to sleep on a flat surface and I slept great on the little cot downstairs yeah I thought I would be miserable slipping on this bed because it's so hard it's not like a mattress it's pretty hard and but it just felt great you know maybe I was super tired from yesterday I don't know because we went to this crazy party and danced watch your step man it's pretty steep oh before they had electricity they would use car batteries car batteries and then there was one house that had a big diesel engine and you'd go up to the house and there was probably a hundred batteries hooked up to it and the the engines just like almost a really slow idle all day long to charge the batteries and then the people would come at night uh pick up their battery go home and that's enough for a simple light charge their cell phone have a fan for maybe a couple of hours wow that was about it they eat the red hands here everybody's so excited about the fpv Drone what's up you speak English come on say something look at me they're good at copying so if we say something hello what's your name what's your name my name is that's all my name is okay everybody in the picture come on come on come on yeah all the village kids in the picture yeah okay that's right Warriors strong how are you okay [Β __Β ] it oh those folks seem to be friendly let's say hi [Music] today until today hungry yeah the word is did you eat rice oh yeah not are you not are you home in Chinese eat rice eat rice yeah you go standard like you eat rice yeah because it's like there's nothing else to eat but rice right yeah Ma 'am sit okay we can sit yo fancy look at this brand new radio what you got over there she got herself you younger kids probably won't even know what this is because it doesn't use the internet but there's these things out there called radio waves we can't see them and we can tune this to listen to music on this it doesn't need the Internet happened looks like uh straws these are straws and then it's an old water bottle watch out Etsy these kids are coming for you [Music] so you first came to Cambodia what year uh uh 2000 good question 10 years 2013. okay yeah been here quite a while so how have you noticed the country developing since the first time you came it's almost been an exponential change since moving here um since electricity has been introduced into the countrysides it's changed everyday living people can have a refrigerator or a freezer a television just some typical modern amenities that we sort of take for granted coming from Western countries the education system is getting better um I think smartphones uh how smartphones are getting a lot cheaper and that it's allowing people to use Facebook and Instagram and to Google search things and to see music from other countries to see fashion from other countries to see shows from other countries their cambodians are kind of obsessed with Korean culture they are okay pop culture so you're starting to see the younger generation dressing different they're dressing I don't want to say sexy but they're dressing more trendy more trendy perfect perfect word for that trendy and there's a huge separation between let's say the kids that we see in this Village and the kids that grow up and see him reap or Phenom Penh oh okay a lot of money right like City kids are different yeah look at this we have here's our lunch talk about Hospitality what about for lunch by the way looks like some pork looks like fried pork right yep looks delicious and probably some fried fish can't go wrong with that yes and what kind of sauce is this the soy sauce oh probably fish fish sauce fish sauce okay we got some veggies cabbage and cucumbers okay like always and there'll be a big bowl of rice pretty good what more do you want so what you're saying is before 2013 Villages like this did not have electricity right how did they live a very simple simplistic there was uh even still today you see guys drive around with trailers full of blocks of ice oh okay this is for people that don't have a refrigerator that might have a small shop like this one that they have these ice chests and they buy a piece of ice and keep their beverages cold that's why we're kind of drinking kind of cold beverages it's because they haven't brought the ice yet to cool it down yeah well thanks man thank you unless enjoy the meal I'm really glad that you're enjoying this so somehow I've noticed the love energy drinks what's what's up with that I don't know I think because Red Bull was invented in Thailand oh it was okay um they kind of had that taste let's see if you want something so in this country you have winners that one just says thank you but some of them sometimes you could win this morning I want a free a free can of soda good for you yeah so I think it just comes from Thailand and they're just used to the sugary extra sweet caffeinated isn't that bad for you though you can't have too many of these that are bad on your heart absolutely yeah they're like there's got a lot of caffeine yeah and something else but we know this because we're educated properly right so that's not good to have too much sugar and too much exact caffeine but places like this Unfortunately they don't teach that sort of thing in school do you eat from this one uh that's yeah so this is yeah that's yours okay [Music] rice just comes tender right every time you have a meal yeah so we were talking about before they don't even ask people if they're hungry they say yambai which means eat rice yeah funny how the same thing they say in China did you eat rice did you eat rice thank you foreign 100 country living and that's how you do it in the countryside now neutral and let's park this thing [Music] oh [Music]
