Land to the Muslims in 1187 and the failure of the Crusades the Knights Templar lost its founding purpose the religious order of warrior monks was now seen as a threat due to their wealth and political power in 1302 the Knights Templar were accused of heresy by King Philip the fourth of France and later were officially ordered to disband by Pope Clement v on Friday October 13 1307 french templar knights were arrested tortured and killed our modern-day unlucky Friday the 13th is related to this event the Knights who survived went underground taking many treasures and religious relics with them legend has it that many escaped Scotland with their riches Templar sympathizers supposedly helped hide the Knights treasures under a chapel until the new world was discovered descendents of hundreds of gold pieces this led to multiple further attempts to drain Lake Guatavita one resulting in the deaths of hundreds of workers the most recent and successful of these edition's was in 1911 when the lake was drained completely however a layer of thick hardened mud had formed trapping the treasure at the bottom of the lake so was this mysterious chieftain El Dorado or was it the lake itself or was there another lost city of wealth called El Dorado the lake itself might still be a gold mine and there have been other lakes and cities around Central and South America full of gold and lost treasures the legend lives on number one the Lost Dutchman mine one of the best treasure tales in the history of the American West is the Lost Dutchman mine shrouded in mystery the mine is not only rich in gold but is also cursed before the Spanish arrived in 1540 the Superstition Mountains of Arizona were considered sacred ground by the Apache Indians who believed it was home to their Thunder God when the Spanish discovered gold in the area they began to explore the mountain range despite warnings from the Apaches that they would be cursed and meet gruesome deaths it wasn't long before Spaniards began to disappear sometimes even just a few feet from their comrades to later be discovered dead and mutilated future expeditions did find several gold mines and the Apache began to
