I've got something to show you guys today that you're gonna absolutely love behold the magnificence well what is it well the excellent folks at Graham bird you know they're the ones that make the my Alaskan chainsaw mill that I have a big fan of have came up came up man I struggle with that one have come up with a with an awesome guide system I have really struggled with this in the past of getting that first initial cut which is so critical and chain saw milling because if the first cut isn't done properly you know all the other mill all the other pieces of timber the rest the way down they all suffer and they follow that crooked line so this is a very welcome addition to my chainsaw milling tool so I'll bring you inside and kind of show you how it works and why I'm such a huge fan I don't think I've ever shared this with you guys but the first time I saw a chainsaw mill I was in Yosemite Park in California and a gigantic ponderosa pine had fallen down it was a windfall and the parks the park rangers were using a couple of chainsaw mills a couple of grand birds to mill these just beautiful Timbers and they were long they were like 60 feet long they were like 24 by 36 they were just absolutely massive timbers and they were doing it out in the field right with a log lay and what was so I just they weren't working when I was there they had they had quit for the day but I just walked around the site and looked at that and I thought man that is I didn't know that was possible that you could mill your own Timbers with a chainsaw and make those beautiful works of art so one thing that uh that I really like about this is that it gives you the ability to to mill any length you want problems that I've run into in the past using ladders you know maybe extension ladders is I was really limited by the length of the ladder and it wasn't very adjustable what I like about this system is that you can add to that and you can simply just continue to bolt them together and you can cut as long as you want if you wanted to a hundred foot timber you could easily do that with this system the other thing that I like about it is it's so easy to level you can have it too you can slap it on top of the log no matter how thorny it is or how uneven it is or how many limbs or knobs that it's got and easily level and get that initial nice first cut so I'll show you how this leveling system works with this ingenious dog system and then we'll do a little cutting and see how it works so this particular log is actually pretty thorny and this wood opposed a lot of problems for me in the past trying to get a nice level surface I would have to take my chainsaw and cut off the knobs and just it was just a bunch of extra work now those days are gone I can put my level here on these cross braces and just by setting adjusting these set screws here I can change or just fill in or just run those down there until they come in contact with the bark and I can perfectly just dial in right there with my level there looking at it dial in exactly what I want to be once I have that set in I can just take my hatchet I can set that that dog there now that's not going to slide with the vibration of the saw that was another thing that the chainsaw mill would cause so much vibration that the ladders would fall off it was it was just not very great another great process this is ideal so now here's the cool bit so I've got this first section on there the main sections little over 8 feet long so I can easily cut an 8 or 8 foot piece of material there you need to back these out here so I've got an extra section here which is another 5 foot so I can cut more I think I can do like a 12 footer here so these simply lock together put your dog up and tighten your set screws here the half-inch wrench hey Granberg how about you change the size of these so we can use our chainsaw tool instead of the half inch wrench you have to carry an extra tool around I'd like to see that that I could use this tool here instead of having the complication of an extra wrench so there are wild strawberries in our field so I just took them and put them on a piece of straw and then you can just pull them off how they taste these little alpine strawberries they're a little sour but they're pretty good very robust flavor so it take quite a while to pick a bowl of those so it's not a big deal on my father's bill to keep this fabulous little clipper little leather clipper and drill a hole in my chainsaw tool put a piece of cordage on there here's a quiz for you type of knot is that anyone who can say in the comments step and knot that is is super smart tie a knot in it and then you always have with you don't lose it I've lost so many of these and I've never well I still have this one haven't lost it yet have I but it does work well also put my wrench on there so something like that works pretty good when you're milling I like the ability to have this type of precision when lining everything up I can just turn this and just watch that bubble just go right into exactly where I want it no shimmying no messing around it is very quick very easy to do so there's the setup with those two pieces we can cut a timber that's what it comes out to like just under 14 feet like 13 feet 8 and by adding another one we could cut it indefinitely or just go as long as we wanted to but look look how nice and level and straight that is a good solid base when you grab it there's no wiggle in it it's rock solid because of the dogging system and you can see here's what the I like about this adjustable feet you can see right here we've got we got this one that's coming down there it's coming quite a bit long ways to hit that low wait and then we've got other ones you know that are short and long so it just compensates for all of that because if you look at the top of this log here as I pan it you'll see that it's it's not flat and it has to be flat for that first cut so this is a super super system so I want to share with you my tool roll that I use chainsaw milling it I wish my ever subscriber who builds these really nice little bags and wallets and different things out of recycled fire hose it's called recycle firefighter and he sent this this tool roll to me years ago and sadly I don't believe he makes them anymore because it is I wished I wished he did maybe we can put pressure on him to put these in his catalog and start making them again because I'd like to have a couple more they're so great for something like this with the chainsaw milling and tools or even if just having a automotive kit for your wrenches and screwdrivers I mean it's just nothing better I keep my we call this the we call it a scrunch scrunch here with wildland and I don't know if loggers call with that because it's a screwdriver and a wrench that's your chainsaw tool there pair of pliers a small file for filing depth gauges rakers raker gauges they're flat screwdriver carburetor adjustment screwdriver half-inch wrench two files Swiss spanner wrench oak wedge and a file but that makes up the kit but you can see once you roll it up such a nice design well I mean this is been used for ages huh reason why is because it's so good but it's got this nice soft strap on it and you can lock this in here not learning anything new here are we but it is good I'll tell you that's a that's a good set up right there recycle firefighter let's go over to his website and put some pressure on it maybe he'll make them again for us so we can buy them that's really when you get acquainted with the tool that you've worked with for so many years and you I guess you kind of well you kind of really get to know it would say you get to know each other such a messy inanimate object here but I this this off it's it's cold haven't started it for several buds I can probably tell you how many poles it will take to start it it's so it's so regular let's say it's going to be five until it kicks or pops we'll see hit ah three I should have known that three it's the other one that's fine I'll choke it up three more little start so I just learned a valuable lesson make sure that your saw depth is deeper than your dog's maybe you saw there I think I got that on video I came in and ran my chainsaw blade right into that steel dog look at that just about cut all the way through before I could even realize what was going on and so now we get to put a new chain on all right Granberg please send me another dog that one's not looking so good lesson learned that's okay not all is lost now to give us an excuse to talk a little bit about ripping chain how chainsaw mailing chains are different than regular chain so to change our chain we got to take the saw out of the bamberg mill actually you know what Granberg I owe you an apology these half inch bolts that you use on the chainsaw mill and everything that are all the same that actually is the correct size on chainsaw tools I just happen to have an oddball one so sorry about that carry on well done can you think of a manlier tool in a chainsaw and you think of a more useful tool that a chainsaw far as pound per plant pound per pound just they really are they are really modern marvels you really appreciate them you know what I I think that everyone who's going to get into using a chainsaw a lot a lot I think you should it should be mandatory for you the young guys to have to end witness to have to go cut with the old tools for a while go a Hugh a few trees down with a crosscut saw on an axe and you'll have a fully different appreciation for what a wonderful tool these are a lot of resin on this chain here isn't there so this here this is not a ripping chain this is a standard cross-cutting chain looks like one that's about worn out here I've probably get one or two more filings on that that'll be it but you can see look at all the isn't stuck on there this is pretty typical for Doug firs there they got a lot of SAP in them but fortunately here I got I can show you I got two brand-new ripping chains now ripping chain this is going to be a bit of a review for many of you guys but a ripping chain is a different whole different breed of cat here see if I can focus Lockean there all right we're focused so ripping chain is a file at a 90 degree excuse me 5 degree angle it's almost a 90 I've I've random at 90 it seems that five degrees works a little bit better where your crosscut chain is going to be much more much deeper like this is going to be you know closer to 25 28 30 degrees and you also with a ripping change you're going to see that they've got to to every two teeth you're going to have one that's thinner see how it's how it's that's thin there and this one here is wide that's going to be really indicative okay you can make these yourself I've made them out of standard crosscut chains several times or you can buy and get them from Granberg I don't know if Oregon makes them still makes them or not I know Granberg still has them but what they do is they leave a nice clean much cleaner cut finish I can't I don't know if they cut me faster maybe but I do notice they leave a nicer finish so we'll put this brand new it on here and this one will read this one really really cut nice don't forget to flip that bar which time you change that chain whip that bar so it'll wear even leave the last twice as long and critical take a pine needle or something right here at your oiler right there keep those clean when you flip your bar and you see that there when you flip your bar right there so this is the side that wasn't being used you'll always be gummed up with saw chips and oil get that cleaned out or you'll burn your bars up at these light bars at 150 $200 apiece you just don't want to do it something necessary I apologize guys I can only imagine what the audio must be like on this video I MyLab mic is broken and I ordered a new one it won't be here for another day or two so we're making do with stone knives and bearskins here turned out nice huh man that looks it's a nice pieces a good old that's a it's a good chunk of fur right there isn't it betcha looks nice alright so what's this for you're probably asking well I have got a very ambitious project that I'm looking forward to getting started mrs. dub you informed me that she wants her kitchen done first so actually tomorrow we're going to be getting back to work on the remodel so we're going to put the island in and the gas range and all that stuff so that we'll have some fun content for there that too and many of you have been asking about that so so stay tuned that should be coming up in the next day or two so we'll get going on that but I've got to finish her kitchen and then we can get started on our amazing project so you know what time it is it's time for a manly manners mainly manners Liva done a manly manners for a long time if you'd like to watch the mainly manners why this one was a really struck right to the heart for me anyway you can click on the video thank you over to manly matters if you're watching on mobile again I always have to remind you because not everyone knows this well it took me a long time to figure it out but top right you see a little icon there that'll open up the card system and you can access that video that way and then of course I'll always put them in the subject heading so head on over there for manly manners now is a good time to thumbs up we appreciate that so what you can support the channel you haven't subscribed invite you to do that as well so a couple questions you know you may have noticed that the videos are I'm kind of getting into making them a little bit longer in the 20 22 minute rate or 18 20 minute range or so and you know it's it's a I enjoyed it's easier for me to do that because sometimes I felt like I couldn't really get all the all the clips or enough time to tell the story or to share what I wanted to share in the 9 10 minute segment and what I've been watching is audience attention what I feared what might happen was that people would drop off and that was just too long for most people but what's happening with YouTube it is with me and I think with a lot of people is it has become it's essentially replaced television and to be able to sit down and in the morning over coffee or in the evening and to watch your favorite channels and to have something that's longer you know more feature length or the length of what a traditional sitcom would have been when you strip out the commercials is is agreeable so that's kind of why I'm doing the longer videos and it's usually working out well so long as that continues and you continue to watch then I'll be happy to do that well some questions on the timber-frame mailbox that came up you know why do we put the mailbox on the outside of the street I'm only I must I'm kind of under the impression that maybe those questions are coming from our European just European subscribers or I don't know but they're always that done that way the suit because we drive on the right side of the road and the male's typically have right hand drive vehicles and you know they they like to have everything on the same side so it just makes it more efficient and also why question is why I didn't put it in concrete I didn't put it in concrete for a couple different reasons concrete has a tendency to hold the water so you pour concrete around the wood and the would inevitably will shrink up a little bit the water will hold down in there and basically holds a little Bowl that can't drain out and it will rot the wood very quickly so that's one reason why I didn't put it in concrete and the second reason was that post is buried and shanked in pretty good a couple feet deep it my idea was if it does get hit by a snowplow or something it will simply twist and fall out and won't damage or break the the joinery and I think that that's probably the case it's pretty burly so we'll see we'll see about that but I appreciate the support and thanks for watching and we'll missus W and I'll be working on the house remodel today getting back on the kitchen we're going to be installing a gas range and putting in the island and and we'll bring you along for that providing there's interest so all right we'll see you guys on the next video
