alright hey everyone Dustin isse here and in today's video I'm going to share with you my new push shot box which I just got in the mail from alla prima posad this is the yellow stone model which is 11 by 14 and when I was researching this for myself there were a few YouTube videos that showed the box but I didn't think that there was one that showed in depth how incredible this is without reservation I can say that this is the most beautiful painting instrument that I have ever owned in the 20 years that I've been painting and it's making me like even more excited to go out and paint just because when you have the right tools it makes the process so much more enjoyable so not this video is not sponsored I just bought this box you know a couple weeks ago and literally I'm just so thrilled with it that I wanted to give you guys a walkthrough of it so you can see what it's all about when you're considering what type of painting box to get for yourself so let's dive in alright so the first thing that I want to emphasize is how well crafted this box is it's clearly a handmade I know that been hand makes each and every one of these and as an artist and somebody who really looks at craft and cares about craft you know it's just such a pleasure to have such a beautifully crafted object everything is just tightly constructed and you can tell that you know he took a lot of time to both screw together all of the joints but also glue them together and then all the wood is just finely stained with oil which is just like beautiful and you can just tell when you're holding it and using it that it's extremely tightly and well constructed so the way that this box opens up well is you know pulling down his front latch and it's held in place by magnets which is just beautiful they're really strong magnets so you don't have to worry about it coming apart when you're carrying it now you can see this is actually a spot to hold canvas panels I have a bunch of other stuff in there and I'll show you the inside of it a little better in a second but what's nice is when you open this up let's zoom out a little bit when you open this up these hinges in the back actually support the the top of being in place at any angle which is really really nice it's very you can tell that it's like very solid it does not feel like mechanical hinges that are gonna wear out anytime soon they feel very strong very stable you can get in custom engraving and I did that because I thought it would be nice to you know cuz often I'm out painting and I sometimes I don't have my business cards on me so I thought you know be really cool someone can like just come up and take a picture with their phone in lieu of handing out a business card which is awesome because you know as plenty of you're a plein air painter you know you're outside you meet people alright so I don't even know where to begin let's start with the drawers okay so the drawers have these nice little handles I'm gonna make sure you can see everything and they come out they slide in and out like beautifully like so easily so seamlessly and there's plenty of space I don't actually paint with all these colors most of the time I usually only use about five colors so I don't really have to worry too much about space but I wanted to put all these tubes in here so you could see just how many you could pack into it I mean you could probably fit at least fourteen tubes of paint plus a big tube of white I think I think there's like twelve or more in there right now and you can see that there's just plenty of space also the drawers lift out like that and they're very very easy to take in and out if you lift up and slide in where they go right back in but if you pull it all the way out it's not gonna like just flop out on you anytime soon and you can see that like I'm gonna hold this up and make sure you can actually see so you can see that the groove that the drawer rides on is angled at the end and has that nice subtle edge that just holds it right in place which is so cool because that means you know it's gonna slide in and out it's gonna be removable and yet it's not gonna fall out on you you know same with the other drawer with the other drawer I like to put some of my other tools in there you know I've got like a little thing of linseed oil which actually he provided this with my purchase which is really cool some pallet knives mirror sandpaper pencils just great so there's really like just plenty of storage and one of the nice things about his design is that I'm gonna zoom in again and show you guys he's got these little I want you I guess there are screws on Springs or something I don't even know what that looks like on the inside but essentially what happens is essentially what happens is when this top is closed this is pushing down a locking mechanism so that the drawers don't just come open while you're carrying it around right so they're locked most of the time they're locked when this is down and when it's they just slide out like nothing and all right so when I first received the Box this looked just like this this is just comes as oil polished wood and I painted it gray because this is the actual pallets intended to be used as a palette and I just wanted to get myself started off with with a nice gray tone so this is actually just a gray that is all of the colors of my pallet mixed together from a painting session so it's really like the perfect gray for my pallet and that's a really good technique actually at the end of every session I'll take all the paint that's I've been mixing and I'll mix it all together into a gray that I can use next time so that's what I've covered this with and you can see like it's all ready to go so now with the top part of the box this part is designed to serve two functions which is really cool one of the functions is actually to be the easel part of the post shot box right so let me grab a painting here this is a piece that I did about a year ago and it's mounted on a board and so this part right here which slides up and down and is spring-loaded on the inside and he said that the spring that this is held on with down at the bottom of the inside of the box which I'll try and give you guys a view of is rated a for 5,000 pulls up and down which is a lot obviously and so and these move individually on magnets which sit right in here I don't know if you can see that right inside these grooves are very high-powered magnets which which these attach to on the backside so if you want to or need to you know or whatever these can these come off right you could actually remove this completely if you didn't even want to use it but you can see really strong magnets just hold that right in place so if you're using it as an easel out in the field which I may do on occasion but I usually work in larger sizes so won't be as convenient for me you can see that that just holds that right in place really nicely and you can make sure that it's level right but I mean I just think that that's so cool all right so it functions as an easel but then also this is also the brush quiver which so I says I said the inside of this I'm not going to use to carry panels because again I usually work in larger sizes so it's good for holding other tertiary materials like I have a glove in here I have a black and white viewing filter which is great for seeing values more clearly and then I'm gonna keep my you know a bulk of brushes up here just because you know that's going to be convenient for me but the inside of this as with every other part of the box is super well constructed he can see that he uses these very thin pieces of gosh I want to say plywood but I don't even know if that's the right term it's probably not even technically plywood I shouldn't even say because I honestly don't even I don't know but I know that it's it feels very tight and solid but very light so it's obviously not going to add a lot of weight to your trips in and out in and out side so you can see the grooves here for carrying panels and then he's also provided this magnet power insert that can sit on the magnets along this along a groove right here right or along this groove right here so you have the ability to pull multiple sized different panels which is pretty cool so as I said this can be used for two purposes so this is actually so it functions as an as the bottom part of the the easel of the box but it's also a brush quiver which I mean how cool is that so basically at the end of a painting session or I mean God even when you're on your way out to paint the box can hold a number of brushes and they slide into this leather thing right here which is really pretty easy to use I imagine the more that I use this the more that this will you know get even you know act more acclimated to holding brushes and I'm sure like you could see I had to like kind of carefully slide them in because this is very firm but I'm sure that over time it'll it'll adapt to just having brushes slid right into it so this is just a nice piece of rubber so as you can see basically like this bottom part of the box right is elevated enough so that even with these brushes filled with paint at the end of a painting session you can close the box completely and those things are just gonna like hover right there right and they're not going to get like a ton more paint on them and when you close it again with the magnets in the front of the box and lift it up you know in in your head you know that these brushes are angled downward into the pocket right so they're not going to go anywhere which is just phenomenal and let's see the last thing I want to show you guys of the box is the bottom of it so just gonna close it up and nice little leather handle there so on the bottom of the box you can see that it has a gosh don't even know what the correct technical term for that is I'm just going to zoom in and make sure you guys can see that but it has I'm not sure what that's called like and hey tents screw or whatever but it's essentially so that it can be mounted on a tripod and I imagine like obviously that's the way that this was designed to be used and again I probably won't use it like that I have a Gloucester easel and I'll just have this sitting on the shelf part of my Gloucester easel underneath my painting area and are underneath my painting and so I don't have to worry about that for the most part but I imagine that eventually I will get a tripod to mount this on because it's just so convenient for doing smaller studies that you know it's just you know it's so well designed it's kind of would be silly not to use it the way it was designed at least some of the times all right so the only other thing I wanted to mention was Ben did provide an extra pallet insert which can sit on either the top of either drawer and slides in and out very very easily I mean it's it's so everything so seamless you know you can tell that like it doesn't there's not a lot of play in any aspect of this everything is very tight and very solid so anyway this sits right on top of the drawer and can be used as like an extra pallet surface if somebody wanted to extend their mixing area and I imagine that that would be pretty easy to clean at the end of a session and then just you know pop up there or you know let it sit in here whatever so that's nice you know it's a convenient little add-on oh yeah right okay sorry and one more thing all right so the last thing is that I wanted to make sure you guys could see and I'll show you on the other drawer actually but each drawer now this is true on both sides right so each drawer has holes to hold wet brushes that you're working with either vertically right you could like slide a brush in one of these things to hold it up while you're working or these grooves to hold brushes flat while you're working as well which you know I tend to just wear a glove and hold on my brushes in my hand so I probably won't use it that much but it you know it's just another detail and another aspect of how you can see that like every little thing is considered all right so I also want to show you guys my my last painting box just because we're kind of comedic purposes you can see that I put it right on top of this guy so this was my last painting box and this thing I used for 20 years literally and it finally fell apart after many many many years of use so you know basically you know I'm I'm excited to use this but I'm also a little sad because I know that it's gonna end up being covered in paint and not being ever quite as beautiful as it is on day one like this so thanks everyone for watching this video if you're interested in learning more about Ben's Alla Prima post shot boxes go over to Alla Prima post comm again this video is not sponsored in any way I just wanted to make it because I really appreciate a
