hey guys welcome back to record ology okay today we are going to be looking at finally and you may be saying finally I'm saying finally because I've been working on this one for a long time but I finally got my hands on a brand new audio technica LP 120 USB turntable now this year Audio Technica came out with a whole new line of LP 60s and LP 1 20s and very excited to share with you guys this is the USB model of the 120 so this as you know is a mainstay for a lot of people it's a direct-drive turntable this is the turntable the vinyl eyes uses it's his favorite turntable I really really really like this the Crosley c100 which is very similar so I'm thinking I'm gonna love this one as well so I'm very excited to open this we're gonna open it unbox it you know take a look and a listen and I can't wait to hear your thoughts and I'm sure you guys have seen and heard and maybe you own one of these LP 120s so tell me in the comments down below what your thoughts are on it as well but in the meantime guys let's get into it welcome to bracketology now before we get started the artwork on this box is just amazing my favorite is this picture of Hideo Matsushita who was audio-technica's founder this is a picture from 1965 and that is awesome you guys they're playing homage to their heritage and you can just tell the quality again guys just from the packaging ok guys let us go ahead and open her up and see what we got I'm really excited in reading the packaging just looks really good ok right off the bat the packaging is very good look they even like label where the accessories are ok even looking at the dust cover and the way it's wrapped up here and it's like sort of pull apart foam insulation it's really really cool smells like a new car you guys smells like a new car alright we've got the instruction manual we have the flip cover which is taped down and it is very well attached to this piece of cardboard and wrapped in plastic I mean the packaging you guys again this goes back to the pride that they show the pride that they have in their own product how important it is to them to have you receive the product in the best condition so there's our felt flip mat feels like a good one set that aside I'm just gonna lift it right out and pull off these blocks it is heavy it feels quality right off the bat and in the back of this styrofoam blocking material we have the accessories it looks like we got hinges for the dust cover it looks like we've got a queueing light head shell assembly the counterbalance and all of that good stuff let's go ahead and unwrap the turntable itself oh it's just so beautiful oh that's beautiful quality you guys there is a difference you can feel a difference it's apparent from the moment you open it it's apparent from the moment you see the package and then it's really apparent as you begin to unwrap everything and take a deeper look inside here is the platter it's gonna be an aluminum platter or maybe steel I'm not sure that's steel or aluminum and yeah so we got some cool unwrapping to do there's also a couple of boxes that come wrapped up in here so let's see what we got here I'm guessing a power supply no oh okay so it's pout with the end of this power supply stuff so their power it's a power brick with adapters depending on what country is so and here's a 45 spacer and some cabling so that is awesome I'm gonna go ahead and set it up and we'll take a closer look [Music] okay guys so here is the back panel and here is the phono preamp switch so you can use an external preamp or there's a built-in one that works just fine also these audio cables they give you include a grounding wire so definitely use that and the power port is right here on the right-hand side now looking at the bottom of the unit you're gonna see some very nice cushioned swiveling rubberized feet that do a fantastic fantastic job and down here on the edges there's even a little grip where you can grab the edge of the turntable with your hands alright the first thing we need to do in setting this up remove the stylus protector and we need to balance the tonearm so I'm going to unclip the tonearm I'm gonna swivel it out and now to move the counter balance on the back until the tonearm is resting in a completely floating position it's not drifting down and touching and it's not drifting up it's going to be completely floating now it's pulling back to the set to the outside edge because we haven't set the anti skate yet but right now we don't need to worry about that we just need to make sure that it's totally floating in mid-air once it's totally floating in mid-air we can bring it back to the rest and put the clip back on now with the clip back on we're gonna rotate the outer edge the little plastic thing until it gets to zero and then rotate the entire balance until it gets to 1.5 finally we're gonna set one point five on the anti skate as well now the anti skate and the counter balance are set now we can flip on the on switch right here and you'll see that it lights up the edge of the platter just like this now when I change speeds you'll see a different set of dots go into a pattern that you can recognize right here so depending on if it's 78 45 or 33 a different row of dots will light up and we've covered this in other videos but basically if the dots are stationary then that means that the speed is set correctly and the way that you set the speed is with a pitch slider which we're gonna look at in a minute but this one and you'll notice when I switch speeds that it adjusts really quick I mean it locks into the set of dots very very quickly that's a feature of the direct drive motor it's a very quick very high torque motor now here's the pitch slider so it increases or decreases the speed and you can use this to along with a strobe light we were just looking at to set the correct speed if need be it also has a button here for a quartz lock so in the center position that quartz light will light up and the quartz button can be pressed also in any position if you want to manually set a different speed and lock it with a quartz lock that actually uses a quartz mechanism like a watch to lock in that speed all right here's the head shell assembly a really good audio technica stylus and if we look at it from above you'll see that it's got screws and a half-inch mount so you can upgrade it you can do all kinds of cool stuff so again unclipping the tonearm here you'll see that we have a queuing lever and down here we have a queuing light so you can cue up your records in the dark if you want which is really really cool anything with lights is cool I think personally alright let's go ahead and place a record on and give it a listen you guys this right here is what it's all about this is a direct feed from the record player before I do that though let's clean it off really quick and then we will lower our stylus and listen to a pristine direct feed from this record player guys alright guys and now let's listen to it along about 1825 aleph Tennessee very much alive and it never would have got through the Arkansas would if ahead [Music] [Applause] call All Hands prepare to surface All Hands prepare to surface All Hands prepare to surface have them gather in the chat room aye aye sir professor you conceal an itch stay below decks all right guys that was awesome so fun to finally get my hands on the LP 120 we reviewed the LP 60 a used one a few months ago but this is the granddaddy this is what many people claim is their favorite unit and it's a very venerable unit because so many people use it and they say this is good you know it's a it's a fully manual experience but it has you know all the bells and whistles you know that you would want on a record player it's not automatic it's got controls I prefer that I think over like a minimalistic design although sometimes I'm in the mood for that as well and when I do I turn to the u-turns because they look beautiful but this is just fun this is just like I love buttons and switches it's tactile you guys and that's what this is all about right is that whole tactile interaction with your media and this is very much a tactile experience I just you sit down and you look at it and you control things and it's just awesome and it gives you great audio at the end of the day and great control over the experience so hope you like that if you would like to own an LP 120 USB or any other product from Audio Technica like the LP 60 series the LP 120 series click on the
