hi welcome back to my channel i'm beth from bethpavlick.com and today i want to take you through a lesson of all about reading level two [Music] [Music] now if you are a brand new homeschooler and you're anxious because you want to teach your kids how to read but you don't know how or maybe you've brought home an older student from school and you realize that their reading skills are actually really lacking and they're really struggling with reading and that is something that is at the core of successful learning if kids do not know how to read then they're going to have a really hard time with any of the other subjects that they're trying to learn and so successful reading fluency is super important to all other learning and what might surprise you about all about reading is that it actually can be used for students that are older that are still struggling what i love about this curriculum is that it is for all learning styles as well and so i've talked in other videos about finding your kids learning style because every child is different some like to be more hands-on other kids are more visual and so they have to be able to see it themselves others are better at just listening to instructions and so they're all different but with this it works for all learning styles and so i that's what i love about it i have graduated my two oldest kids from this program they went through all of the levels and now they are very good readers and um it covers all the bases as well there's gonna be no gaps it's all in here i've used this for the last seven years my third child is in level two right now and i've never worried that i was not giving them a complete reading and phonics experience and teaching them everything they need to know about our language so i've always felt super confident using it and i just love it and want to recommend it to everybody that asks me how to teach their kids how to read another thing that i love about this curriculum is that it is open and go and it is scripted and so you don't have to worry about just getting curriculum to teach your kids how to read and then not being instructed on how to use it and it's also not complicated instructions in here either i've never felt like i was lost or didn't know what they were talking about when they were explaining how to use this it's super straightforward and easy for you so if you just open up to the lesson right now um we're on lesson 15 this school year with my first grader who is six years old and um it tells you exactly what you need and it tells you exactly what to do so we're gonna go and do a lesson with her right now so are we going to do a reading lesson today yes and do you like your reading lessons what do you like about it um you don't know is it fun to learn how to play how to read and stuff what do you do when you're reading lessons um cut you cut what do you cut doggy you got doggies and then what else do you read stories out of your books do you play games and you read a lot of words on the chart and we like cross them up mm-hmm yeah it's fun to learn how to read isn't it good all right so i have all of our stuff out this is my teacher's manual these are the two readers that come with this level and then i took apart the activity book and put it all in sheet protectors so that i could just grab everything that i need for this lesson and i don't have to like rip it out and like cut up all these things because there's a lot of stuff most of the time each lesson comes with something that you have to cut up and so i just do that ahead of time to save time so this is really straightforward and it tells you exactly what your student is going to be learning in this lesson and it tells you what you're going to need so you need your reading pages 125 and 127 and then the book so we're going to read a story today um before you begin it just kind of tells you how to present what you're going to be learning about today and it'll say like here's a few examples and then you can review um some of the word cards that you've learned in previous lessons this is the box that i have that holds all of the cards that we've done in previous lessons here's the yellow cards and the green on the next page it says complete your activity sheet so we're going to get our activity sheet out after we discuss some things and then we will do that game all right so characters in a story often have a goal or something that they want this goal is the reason or the motivation behind their actions so um remember in jack and the beanstalk have you heard that story before you've never heard that story of jack and the beanstalk what about the story of the three little pigs do you know that story what happens in the three little pigs three houses made out of a straw and um wood and bricks right and the wolf comes to pull the fourth one down then the second one then this other one he can pull down that's right yes so what is the motivation in the big bad wolf why did he tear down their houses why did he want to go into their houses i don't know you don't know why the big bad wolf wanted to eat the pigs [Music] so that was his motivation that was his reason to go and tear down their houses because he wanted to eat them he didn't just want to tear their houses down for no reason right because he was just a big bully or something does that make sense you didn't know that well see now you learned something new huh well um do you know the story of cinderella let's talk about the lion king that's your favorite movie right scar what did he do to mufasa what was his reason for throwing him off the rock that was his brother why did he do that because he wanted to be exactly that was his motivation to hurt his brother because he wanted to be king see now you understand motivation right because we connected it to something that you like all right so now we're going to do our activity it says in today's story the main character wants to earn some money before we read the story let's explore some ways to earn money i'm going to do a little activity before we read the story all right let's do it what's this thing um i'm not sure what that's for all right so the instructions say remove the page from your activity book and cut out the cards arrange them on the table with the illustrations facing up so i've already cut them out can you put them all flat instead of in a pile thank you and it says have your student read each card and then discuss the various ways to earn money and then it even like just scripts it out for you like the questions to ask and the way to do things and so you're not just left trying to figure out how to present this curriculum to your kids all right so let's look at these different jobs what's this first one can you read that what's it say shake spoken thing ah what is broken in that picture a bike a bike so would you like to earn money fixing bikes would that be something you would like to do do you know how to fix bikes [Music] kind of all right what's this next one wait rake what can we rake leaves have you ever helped mommy rake leaves you have daddy rake dead grass that's true yes do you remember last year when i raked up leaves and you helped me pick them up and put them in the bags yeah would you like to earn money to do that yes and mama yeah what if a big leaf pile was there when i jumped into it that would be fun we'd have to live somewhere where there's a lot more trees all right what's this next one do i chill do a chore hmm what kind of chores do i ask you to do [Music] get dressed sure what other things around the house do i ask you to do put mine put it away yeah what if you earned money by doing those chores would you like that yeah that would be easy what is this plus dove brush dogs would you like to have that job what if you like knew a lot of dogs in the neighborhood or something and you earned money by brushing them would that be a fun job yes all right what's this one baked muffins baked muffins what if you had a bakery and you got money from selling your muffins would that be a fun job yeah there's lots of different ways to earn money isn't there it does look super good what kind of a muffin do you think that is i don't know i don't know either it looks like there's some maybe some slivered almonds on top and maybe this is peanut butter it's a peanut butter almond muffin that doesn't sound very good does it so here's another option like what other kind of thing would you like to do to earn money your own idea [Music] brush the dogs and [Music] do a vet be a vet is that what you want your job to be when you get older that would be a fun job well there's just lines that you can like draw on you don't you can just choose one so now that we're done um talking about those jobs we're going to read the warm-up sheet and so this is words taught in previous lessons and then there's phrases that are actually in the story that she'll practice before she reads that way she will already be familiar with them and it will not trip her up when she's reading the story which i love and then there's names here and so we're just going to read this and then we'll read our story are you ready okay [Music] she's getting kind of tired from reading this practice she and she still has a story to read so we're just going to cut off the practice sheet just go straight to the story and when we have readers that are brand new and they are unsure of themselves and they still struggle to pronounce words the right way you can't help them enough and it's really okay to go ahead and help them with those words that they're struggling with and i have to stop myself from like jumping in and giving her the right words right away um because i don't want to like just dampen her spirit and try to i don't want to try to dampen her confidence in herself and so i wait for her to you know ask me what that word is but sometimes i do it still and it's a habit that i can't break um but i i just try to help her go slowly and always help her as much as possible so that she can practice without feeling really stressed about it okay cake sat on the red well it's a black and white picture so it's hard to tell if it's black or red [Music] wow the end you did such a good job reading i am proud of you high five did you like that story what did you like about it um the cupcakes i like the cupcakes if you had a bake sale and you got some money for them what would you do with the money um get um a new cup get a new car you'd have to make a lot of cupcakes all right so now her lesson is done and this is the progress sheet that she just likes to color in um the little lesson numbers after she's done with them and it's nice for her to be able to see like how far she's come and how much farther she has to go so i hope this video was helpful to you um and just seeing what goes into and all about reading lesson like i said before i just feel like you you cover all the bases with this reading program not only does it teach them how to read but it also teaches them phonics rules and it just teaches them how to decode the words and it also teaches them a lot of spelling um the all about learning press curriculum company also has all about spelling so if you have a student no matter what age they are um if they're having a lot of trouble with spelling then you can also look into this program that they have as well um i bought this for my oldest um when he was learning how to spell and um it worked really well for him if you have a struggling speller like a really big struggling speller or if that's something that's really important to you um to make sure that they really have down their spelling then this is going to be an amazing program for you too so thanks so much for watching i'll leave the links down for this down in the description box and if you have any questions you can always email me at teachfromhomebath gmail.com and i'll see you in the next video [Music]
