hey everyone and welcome back to another video on Lumber Capital log yard today we're going to be talking about Poplar and its many uses but specifically what it is and isn't good for so let's get into this video [Music] [Music] today I have with me on the deck four lovely popular logs these are going to specifically go for targets for the Hatchet House which is a local hajit throwing business in our area so these already have specific uses but I would like to talk a little bit about some other uses for Poplar as well as where it lies on the Jenga scale so let's get into this although technically a hardwood Poplar is one of the softest commercially used Woods available on the market right now coming in at just a little bit harder than your typical white pine due to the low price of Poplar compared to other Woods it's used in a lot of industrial applications like pallets and crates and boxes it is considered a hardwood because of its grain formation but it is like I said actually pretty soft I haven't talked before about the Jenga scale and I'll probably make an in-depth video about how they find where the wood lies on the janca scale but basically Bass Poplar Pine Hemlock all of these Woods lie on the lower end of the scale meaning that the number that is given to them is lower because they are softer they are less dense less hard and it really is irrelevant whether they are a soft wood or a hardwood and so when you hear that Poplar is a hardwood it can be very misleading because it doesn't necessarily mean it's a hard strong wood [Music] foreign so Poplar lies at 480 on the Jenkins scale and just to give a little bit more of a reference here where White Oak would lie more at like 1300 or over even and that's not even close to the highest on the Jenga scale a lot of it's more exotic wood at the higher up you get but you know stuff like ironwood's just super hard so remember how I said that Pine is just a little bit softer than Poplar well it actually comes in on the scale at 380 or this like I said it's more like 480. this is just rough estimates Poplar is oftentimes used for stuff like picture frames actually a lot it's the main use for Poplar is actually picture frames paper also but I feel like the main reason why it's used is mainly due to the price it's like Pine price wise but the thing about Pine versus Poplar is that Pine grows really fast whereas Poplar doesn't one distinguishing fact of hardwood versus soft wood is that Hardwoods grow slower so that being said it's not as renewable as something like Pine and that's why pine is so heavily used in the end it's just important to know what to use Poplar for and what it's not so great for so I'm hoping that this video will help you guys out with that it's not so great for flooring like I already mentioned but surprisingly something like Furniture it's great for it's soft so it's good for carving and it's uniform grain formation I think is the appeal mainly of course price as well if you want to make a affordable piece of furniture something that majority of people can avoid versus something that's thousands of dollars that nobody can really afford except for those rich people that somehow made it in life anyhow let's get to cutting into this popular Poplar can be some of the prettiest wood when you first cut into it because it is so colorful not every Poplar is though so I don't want to get your guys's hopes up but let's cut into this wood and see what happens [Music] together [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] hmm so no rainbow Poplar today which I was a little disappointed about it's part of the reason why I like cutting Poplar because sometimes you just cut into it and it's just this burst of color pinks Blues greens purples it's amazing this was not I don't think that they wanted it their targets to be very colorful anyhow so it's not necessarily a negative thing but it sure is fun for me anyhow I hope that you guys learned something in today's video if you did make sure that you leave a comment down in the comment section other than that I'll see you guys next time foreign [Music]
