hey guys what's up it's Charlie here and today we're going to be looking at airplane pilots answer questions you've always wanted to know we all see airplane pilots every time we go on a plane that's what actually goes on behind those cockpit doors nobody really knows but today we actually have the answers to these very mysterious questions about pilots from how much pilots sleep while flying the plane to why pilots never have facial hair or piercings but before we take off why not subscribe and press the notification bell - coming up first we have how do you get into the cockpit if it's locked it's common knowledge that you can't just walk into the cockpit if you're a passenger so how do the copilot and pilots get in and out of the cockpit well there's actually a secret special code flight attendants and pilots use this is sometimes necessary for flight attendants as well as pilots for example in the rare situation where both pilots lose consciousness before every flight the captain of the aircraft points out the code for that flight and gives it to the whole crew after that code is entered the door will be opened for one minute unless the pilots disabled it also did you know that the pilots have CCTV inside the cockpit this is a camera which can see who's at the door so if they see someone trying to get in who's not a co-pilot or flight attendant they won't open the door instead they'll actually press the button that completely locks the door off this means no one's able to get inside even if they have the code many people don't know this as it's very secretive as they don't want the information falling into the wrong hands but it sure is reassuring to know someone's got a way to get into the cockpit even if both pilots lose consciousness or fall asleep coming up next is why do pilots never have facial hair or piercings you may not have noticed this before or maybe you have but look at any pilot and you won't see moustache or beard anywhere you also won't see any earrings or piercings anywhere on their face well this isn't because all pilots like to have an old-school look bids moustaches and piercings and kind of decorations on their face are not allowed that's because all pilots must be able to properly wear an oxygen mask this mask has to be fitted very tightly onto their heads so that's why their faces should always be very very clean and clear only small stubble is allowed on their face otherwise they'd be putting their lives in danger as well as all of the passengers on the plane if the event something bad happens with the plane it's essential the pilots must be able to wear oxygen masks and not only wear them but wear them very tightly and securely after all they can't pass out as they're operating the entire plane a Pearson could easily tear or damage an oxygen mask and if their beard or moustache is too bushy this could lead to gaps in between their face and the mask so that's why you'll never see a pilot have any facial hair or piercings the next question you may want to ask a pilot is what's the worst thing for a plane to hit you may not know it but when your planes in the air it's likely hitting a lot of things for example on many flights birds are hit by planes this can be bad if it goes into the turbine and messes it up also if the bird is large enough it could cause a severe dent in the plane this can damage the planes aerodynamics and make it much harder to fly especially if it's a small aircraft another terrible thing for a plane to get caught in is a hail storm if this happened this could severely damage the plane also if the hails big enough to crack the clasp of the plane this could make visibility very low sometimes the planes are even hit by lightning this is obviously very rare but it can happen in this event small parts can fall off the plane but luckily most modern planes are built to be lightning proof but it's still pretty scary and can happen on many planes however most passengers likely won't know if their planes hit something like a bird of course the pilot would notice but they don't want to worry any passengers so they don't mention it next up is do you sleep while flying that's a question you probably wanted to ask a flight attendant many times after all on long flights pilots literally have to sleep just ask the passengers well a scary fact is 60% of pilots have once accidentally fallen asleep during a flight and 20% of those times they four woken up and found their copilot also asleep that's right some of the time your plane may actually be flown two by two people who are sleeping but don't worry too much many modern planes actually work fully in automatic mode also when planes land air traffic controllers wake up the pilots they simply ask for confirmation they're awake in their headphones and this wakes up the pilots however on long flights pilots sleeping plans are mapped out on longer flights there are often two or three pilots present this means they can sleep in shifts to make sure everyone has a rest there's also a special room in the cockpit called the sleeping room but don't worry air traffic control makes sure at least one pilots always controlling the flight next up is if a baby's born onboard what citizenship do they get it may sound crazy but babies are sometimes actually born on board flights remember sometimes births can be spontaneous and it's actually not too uncommon for pregnant women to give birth on a plane many long-haul planes actually have birthing kits in case this happens but if a kid is born on the plane at what citizenship do they get well there's actually three different options for their citizenship the first is the country which the airline is registered in that's right you could be anywhere in the world but depending on the airline if this could affect your baby citizenship for example if your baby was born on a British Airways flight it could have British citizenship or if your baby's born on an Emirates flight it could have United Arab Emirates citizenship the second option for citizenship is the country over which the child was born for example if you happen to be flying over Iceland at that time the kid could have Icelandic citizenship or if you happen to be flying over Brazil the baby could have Brazilian citizenship and the final kind would be the citizen of the country the plane landed in without right your destination could be the citizenship of your kid so you landed in the u.s. age would have American citizenship or if you landed in Russia it would have Russian citizenship in most cases the first option is actually the most popular that is the country in which the airline is registered in not only that airline babies get some free bonus gifts for example the chance to fly free to any part of the world during their entire life that's because it's very rare for a baby to be born on an airplane bird chances are if you're born on a certain airline you're going to be using that airliner for your entire life just out of nostalgia next up is what a pilots eat while flying you may assume that pilots get to choose from the same menu as passengers but no there's actually a separate menu for pilots which have a few different dishes they can choose from but the captain actually gets the first dibs for example if the captain prefers chicken the copilot will get the fish or the other meat but that's not just because the captain's the highest-ranking person on the plane it's actually the best way to avoid food poisoning from having the same ingredients the pilots are not allowed to eat the same food in case one of the foods has food poisoning this means the fun of the pilots for Lille during the fight the other pilot can take over however there are some airlines that don't follow this rule and the pilots get the same food as the passengers the next question we have is why don't pass injures get emergency parachutes let's say something terrible's happen to your plane and is falling down from the sky you may wonder in that situation why don't they give an emergency parachute to every passenger on the plane well while it may seem logical it actually isn't it may sound weird but a parachute likely wouldn't save your life if a plane starts to fall even in a calm situation most people can't put a parachute on correctly and land safely also to jump out of a parachute with a plane safely you need to be around 16,000 feet in the air if your plane is falling rapidly you're likely going to fall below that altitude very very quickly however there's no laws against you carrying on your own parachutes and some very scared passengers to actually take parachutes as carry-on luggage you could try this out but you should also remember that parachutes are very expensive high range parachutes can set you back as much as a good car that's right some professional parachutes can cost around ten to twenty thousand dollars so maybe it's worth just risking it and not taking a parachute at all and the final question you've always wanted to know from a pilot is our pilots ever scared of flying it may sound like some joke to think of a pilot who's scared of flying but pilots actually say sometimes they are scared but funnily enough it's not of flying instead of their plane malfunctioning did he know the biggest plane crash in history didn't even happen in the sky it happened on the ground in 1977 two airplanes collided on the runway and 600 people lost their lives one fact put your mind at rest is most instance happen in the first three minutes of takeoff and the last eight minutes before landing not only that 96 percent of people who are in a plane crash actually survived however unluckily for pilots the safest seats are in the back five rows and also any seats within five rows of an emergency exit are very safe too but some pilots have actually admitted to being kind of scared sometimes when flying so to reassure them they do something like take a picture of their family or a stuffed toy on board with them it may sound silly but it gives them peace of mind when there are thousands of miles above
