Big Boy's neighborhood agnez mo in the neighborhood first off welcome to the neighborhood and I would say with all the accolades you stop that okay watching you listening to you you're the legend I'm so honored to be here stop that at one time I might downside of getting away these compliments please and I do have to ask you with all the superstardom right what are you doing here you don't like me you know what I've always believed that my journey is like a learning process right and some of the musicians some of the you know artists that I've always wanted to work with happen to be here so I just thought you know what might as well no I'm not even talking about here I'm talking about here in here okay because your fan but I would figure with all the accolades and everything I would be like dude like why am I going to go see Big Boi not appreciate it too and just just knowing what's going down with you man it's been a long road you don't have seen in a long road of you know the ups and downs or accomplishments you know what I'm saying but now that we that we kind of taken you as ours as well does it feel like okay like there is a reintroduction and introduction and then there's also people that know what's going down which do you feel like like them I'm introducing myself to probably to a lot of people that don't know me or my music absolutely it's always been like that ever since I moved out here right you know but I think that you know one is your mindset is on the right on the right thing which is you know what I mean like the learning process and then enjoying the journey that all of those all of those things like it's it really doesn't matter you know what I mean cause like at the end of the day you actually I actually ended up having broader audience from the share not just my music but also my message you know I mean I think I've always been the kind of artists who don't want to just use my platform for my music but I'll write my message you know and grow you know growing up I literally I was born in Indonesia literally like thousands miles away from the US where people thought that Hollywood is not something that they can reach you know means like oh it's a movie yeah yeah yeah it's not a place it's not something not real you know and then for me to be able to talk to you right now and to actually have this platform it's it's humbling and it's you know it's encouraging you need to know that that I'm actually on the chart amongst with these amazing artists you know I mean and then to to to actually to be able to say to people that hey actually your music can translate and can and and transcends more than your skin color and where and where you're from why do the the desire for more you know seeing like when someone has so much and you worked so hard why more because I will tell you straight up you let me blow up like how you are I'm not doing nothing else I think this is how my family raised me both of my my family that was a little sneak diss right there but now you say it that hard work was in your family artitude to want more just both of my parents are former national athletes so they they they grow up and they the way they race me it's always about the process right you know what I mean and and to elevate to the next level it's it's never been about the height so they never really like congratulate me or whatever for my for my award they always congratulate me for like good job on putting that much work it's right you know I mean and I think because they they complimented the right stuff and not the hype I became this type of artist who always wants to okay what what else I can learn today you know from other people you know so it's not just about like oh how many files like whatever like you got someone so followers whatever you're still our little daughter I mean if always do you have 36 million followers on what on like social media Jesus Christ she gonna be like she gonna be like for real why was I in there right now I figured it out 36 million social media followers what do you tell 36 million social media let me send you a dollar a lot of people asking you the same question like how do you get those you know those followers I was gonna ask fine by not focusing on that literally by not caring about you I don't focus on it and I'm gonna tell my fans to blow your all right and they're gonna be with me for like a day then I got him like we did our charity are happy ha overdose you put that together with sea Breezie go ahead now chris is a I've been doing Chris for many years you don't have a saying are y'all boyfriend and girlfriend business in Christian movies as well how does one kiss in a video like that vile actually liquid without actually kissing I think he had a hard if I were to be kissed like that I'm telling I'm a married man okay the station is clean the show first officer Chris Brown you're not boyfriend and girlfriend what about man and woman it was just like we were just you know in the moment you know and a lot of things happen in a moment though have you been in the studio like for let's say for like cutting son like overdose you're in a studio ten hours and then y'all look and you're like oh she we recorded others we made sure that we recorded some music but you hear it all the time where people do ask right yeah absolutely but we've just been focusing on the music and even when we've you know quote unquote found each other on on Instagram and that was like back two or three years ago before this project even happened and one day we just decided to you know what let's just play each other's music you know we're familiar with each other's music and let's just see how you know how the vibe is and we were in the studio and he had the idea of putting me on his album his his deluxe album and then we didn't stop there we just kind of you know if I bow listen to music and listen to bees and then just started writing together but there was no business strategy like oh you're on this label oh yeah I'm on the label let's put it out because oh you're big in Asia I'm big you know right right never that like it wasn't like marketing you know there was not nothing and I kind of mimics authentic though exactly it's like I missed that from music business I've been I've been doing this literally my whole life my first single was when I was like 6 years old so it's like I've seen all the crazy things happening and I missed that authenticity you know I can imagine just to be in the studio not thinking about oh let's make it more urban now oh let's make it more risk exactly like there's there was nothing like that so so that's the reason why I feel like we and that's probably the reason why our works as well - absolutely go first on Instagram Chris you know I use a sliding you dance it was my first dam you Chris yes how did that start did he get in touch with you first however to where we are now I took my first thing we're seeing do we will go way back we want to go all the way back there yes can you walk around at home like home home like with you that's crazy dear fans miss you now that you are to move out here I always told them hey by the way I have this you know this dream I'm going I'm going to have a problem with that earlier absolutely Wow what was the problem and why it's because like I think I was like 19 years old when I said that you know that I wanted to go international I wanted to win my first Grammy and then I think at that time social media wasn't big so you know it's just just it just looked like it's it's not gonna happen right you know what I mean and then there was actually an article and a man like I should have kept that saying that what are you talking what are you talking is like you you're just an Indonesian so for me to like was that really Indonesia yeah so so for me to like hear that and just read that as a 19 year old girl you know what I mean it kind of crushed my heart in a way that Wow like I mean not a lot of people I guess not a lot of people have the privilege to even have a goal mm-hmm you know I mean like for for y'all to even like bash yeah yeah yeah you know what I mean for thinking about my future but don't get me wrong a lot of people we're rooting for me of course my fans are rooting for me and I and I will always be grateful for that but my mom always taught me like just focus on the on the people that love you focus they're gonna hate you regardless I'd be the best I don't get your mom quite said it like that did she say don't focus on the haters I love it yeah how's the relationship with your parents do they understand what you're doing out here yeah absolutely what the course I mean I'm the only daughter you know and then I have older brother and she's always been like the protective one and I see you go leave all my friends go - they've been super supportive but it's been like what you said it's been a long interesting journey because growing up in a different culture I'm not the thing is I'm not just an Asian who's born in like I'm not an agent who's born in the United States an asian-american you know like I'm not Asian American I'm actually Asian who was born there and grew up there with a whole different like totally different culture what's so timmy was different they we would like man this is the way it is there as I just feel like you know the standard of beauty right like women needs to dress up like this and here are their yeah oh really you know I mean like woman needs to be more conservative right you know and then you can't show your skin too much and but yeah I mean like a lot of people when she's had a great body hello you see my bodies care about my insecurities about my I need to get Indonesia to my body too crazy I could play to cover up okay so so you you get here the and and this is really time to like focus yeah you don't know saying so now you're like okay well when it comes to an artist I want to make I want to make sure that I blow up here and throughout the world what's that first thing that you do when you touch when you touch down um man I just cuz okay when I was 19 year old what I didn't tell you before was that after I read that article after like all the media were talking about how arrogant I was to even say that out loud like talk about my dreams out loud I compiled this huge folder of all the names that I wanted to work with mm-hmm literally not not even like a vision board is a vision folder this thick yeah and the first page was Timlin okay so and then there's like that Noma kiba's named Esther Dean you know Justin Timberlake's and and and then now I'm managed by Justin Timberlake's manager and went along with our partner you know Johnny right and screw face yeah man um shout out to them for believing in me and um you know I worked with Tim Allen yeah so it was it was kind of you know it's a little was crazy the folder was christened absolutely what made you put Tim Allen on that list and you did accomplish that yeah um growing up in in Indonesia we have like 20,000 like over 20,000 islands and we have like you know you can expect a lot of different sound like percussions especially percussions so I feel like Tim Berlin kind of embodies that you know I mean like the beats and stuff and she's so Ginny genius I just wanted to work with with the best was there someone that you wanted to work with and you met and they kind of let you down not yet not yet it's gonna come oh yeah that's the thing like not you know like you always you always know how it is in the business you know what I mean like I've been in the business for so long again like I know how people roll sometimes you know and and I think that's why I feel like I have to focus on me what I want to do for me and what I can do for me and you're so really season 2 though you know see even some of the people that you think like okay they they said you probably lapped them in years and wisdom and you notice a less like success for real for real good lord have mercy just tell you who you have to be who you are and sometimes even my fans tell me AG that's not you don't do that first of all you don't do that type of music breaks up oh don't do that Chandra cuz that's not you and I'm like do you know what type of music I've been listening to like I grew up singing at church like gospel music influenced me along the first I think other than you know listening to Kirk Franklin it's really heatin and all gospel artists I listened to the first R&B album that I listened to was Brandy's Brandy's 1994 album you know and it's like it changed my life and so like who are you to tell me that I can't do this Andra just because of how I look like right you know what I mean just because I'm from Indonesia then then you want me to do Indonesian traditional sounds like I'm not my did you ever um absolutely okay and I try to infuse some rational you know traditional culture into even the music video would Chris like I did a little dance where it was a little you know Indonesian traditional dance you probably like that to things like do they get mad those would people get man hey swag my whole life swag swag so you see when she said your faces are swagged out the new video course new single is Chris Brown you and Chris Brown overdose alrighty what's going down album wise what's cracking cracking so I basically recorded 50 to 60 songs before I had that project going on with Chris and we also have recorded over 10 songs 10 to 12 songs with Chris O so we pretty much have everything you know done you know my album my solo album and the duet project will you do 2019 um possibly like February I would say around Valentine's Day I really want to have like one solo single outer I've been you know what I mean and then after that the album coming out probably around summertime is it is it a big name of album yet I will tell you straight up if if you go to to Breakfast Club and tell them hi they won't you up yeah but you got the name if we guess the name over the album will you tell us sure hands on hate the author says give me a sign my beanie my B I made it baby no not my beanie baby Nova do it what they do with that big-ass snake you got a whole Brooklyn ear he's seeing a falsetto and bass at the same foot every time he's singing lead in background that big-ass Google employees you guys we trying to get in touch with her next-of-kin but you do have the album title yeah all right and it would that be the album tighter you think are you still in progress we do have the title for you and what about any other features on your actual album oh yeah yeah well you know we're still working on it we got wissen I got Luda there too but right now I just want to you know put out something that's just me okay because I've done the collab with Tim GI and with Chris I just feel like it's time for me to be you know I want to know the name of the album but you know I would rather go Big Boy's neighborhood but if it is your project we put you first you don't now are you in competition with yourself tone and when I say competition are you in a position where it's like like man like you put a lot of prey are you putting pressure on yourself with your own project I mean it just kind of happens you know what I mean like the pressure and the responsibility will always be there yeah especially cuz when when I got here and then now that I'm charting high you know I realize it more that this is bigger than just myself you know like this is bigger than the music this is this is for my country is this is for the people who's been you know watching and then waiting for me to actually make it happen and you know it's for my fans so absolutely you've been making music for so long and I'm sure there's been you know different journeys that you've had in your life different layers you've already had to pull back how do you go this time around and give us something that no one else has seen but also it's an introduction I always think that my music is a form of diary you know like it might be you know it might be ugly but at least it's it's my truth you know and I've always believed that and especially when I moved out here people constantly pressured me for oh this is not you like what I said um you know what I said before like this is not you AG like why are you doing this and then I just at one point I was just like you know what let me just do me yeah I want to be real and yes it's it's taken me longer because every time like I I went into a meeting and people will but you're Asian like why are you doing this type of music oh oh you you need to be more like this it's always been like oh you too thin for this oh no you're to Asia is always something it's always something you know and especially when English is not your first language it's kind of like oh but what if like you there's always this worries coming from other people so there are people absolutely but then that's when I actually become more convinced that I should do me you know what I mean because I would never be able to satisfy everybody and with a country of influence a business of influence social media influence it's hard to kind of break away from that well you do have to just say you know let me shut down and let me do what I absolutely anything have you been gun shy your whole life yeah then you wouldn't have what you have already absolutely cuz every time they always won't want me to do oh let's do more pop AG you know let's do more pop dance cuz you know that's where you're right right right and I'm like wait like why are you putting me in your boxes though mm-hmm cuz I'm not in anybody's boxes like I'm here to move the boxes you know what I mean like I know me like I don't wanna be I don't want to be put in your categories you know like I'm just doing me everybody know what's right for you you know and then now that I'm actually you know I can back it up and I actually say hey by the way I'm charting on both rhythmic and urban formats then I can you know what I mean I have this leverage from you but then you gonna get all the I knew it's way back it's a really great though to because we saw just even and not to put like everyone in a box like you said but like there's a really great movement of people seeing more representation without music and with movies and got to see with you know people going out and going to see Black Panther and hitting sure the numbers are right when you know crazy rich Asians come out you know and it's celebrating constant whoo and now there's there's gonna be someone else that's out here here in the states that's gonna see you and say like she looks like me or she's my you know I'm Indonesian too but I live here and now they're gonna want to champion years and that's the reason why I said that this is bigger than myself this is bigger than the music and everybody do want to put people in a box man all the time and and we get it every bump written you know and especially if you dreaming big where people don't understand yeah you know sayin it's like people want you to just stop dream you shouldn't understand your dream though right think about it you know I mean it should be big enough that you can't even come from comprehend it mm-hmm I feel like that's when you know it's the real thing when it's scary yeah yeah yeah and see that that's good for some I like keeping mine on a you know look at you you make a difference apologies but they clown of course you gonna stay in right I've been following your neighborhood for my name's I know you know I'll see you again man that's crazy everybody know you found without braggadocious yeah sometimes when you say legend sometime it doesn't sound like you know you wanted in all capital letters you know the legend legend legendary you know you you hear it but I don't I don't like to say it legendary but you know what thank you for coming into the neighborhood just sit with me and I thank you for coming in and sitting down with us you know and just just knowing what I know and then looking at a back story and being able to be whatever we can be in in the next part of this journey or even if it's not a chapter the next book that you're writing I love to see where this is gonna go and it's only gonna go right because what you're putting into it you know saying and you are it's written you know and I don't think you're afraid of hard work you know I don't thing and the one thing also is I think people really don't understand how much work you've put in you know I'm saying and that's why when we came out and I did ask you about Chris I wanted to get that out the way because it's not just about a relationship or who you reporting with a whole you know or that's all girl because you already built a legacy that you continue to be like I've built my my craft I build my art you know what I mean and I've always wanted to focus on my art and not not about the hype yeah the social media is school and that's that's oh you know that's something that I always want to remind my listeners my my fans that when you know exactly what you want like just focus on that like don't focus on what people are telling you you who you should be you're like you know cuz you you never satisfy anybody if that was a case I wouldn't be married right now you don't know saying I focused on my wife I like I'm gonna get things right now I'm coming home get your trainer out I'm coming home all righty and whenever you want to come back please come back don't come empty-handed like you were today bear give some breakfast yozo-san a gizmo in the neighborhood big boys [Music]
