a day after closure all was not quite dead at birth on this monday morning there's still some activity but strictly freight at bath green park assembling a trip train to leave about midday and there's the onion tank which so rumor has it has been detailed to round up stray wagons and generally clear [Applause] [Music] up the last hope of the line from bath to yate the gas works on this monday morning we spoke to some of the men still working at bath still working but for how long and then we watched our last train leave behind its two diesels [Applause] so putting the clock back even in wartime i had an engine my chums were pretty jealous come about 1947 i take my first photograph with my mother's box camera at ilfracombe the camera found its way to scotland but it couldn't cope with speed then along came the destruction of the somerset dorset at the same time as we were editing somerset and dorset material i started sending pictures of modern traction to the media enthusiasm for all things rail was persisting a safety net had to go up here thanks to levels of interest [Music] and it was nice to see patients rewarded [Music] even for a dmu too [Music] diesels were not quite the same for the photographer though he had to wait for glamour to come at last published photographers now eschewed the three-quarter view putting trains into context was the aim of wynn hobson's phoenix photographic circle win on the left and to his right brian morrison you might not even need to see the train ah motor rail many published photographers used just initials rather than their four names of course even so-called modernization's gone the wheel tapper is certainly gone except for the pub this tablet exchange operators at castle carey is remarkably lifelike the dmu was coming off the single line section from weymouth my morning commute into bristol was enlivened one morning by the pilot man there he is thank you for getting me to work sir the two dozen phoenix members had a great time discussing the merits of how you crop that picture in the event in the book dmu's countrywide we used it pretty much full frame dennis bradford barton published around 150 books some under his own pseudonym edited by h.l ford that book was a year's work i had to sketch out all the layouts for him good job they weren't published in general acceptance and rejection was a fact of life in railway publishing but very satisfying to see your work in print i was always interested in how it was used all an interesting foil to my day job of helping to make retail packaging and in particular this one yeah blame me now quick chips talking of branding this relaunched british rail western region in particular who had been struggling with diesel hydraulics and three-quarter views were suddenly appealing all over again covering the hst story took me behind the scenes that's the new service depot flips contrasting mood elsewhere not everywhere was so glamorous of course that's what they seem to be waiting for nicely framed so framing could produce a decent photograph more here at sedans park now disappeared sadly as of wonderful westerns this one running wrong line suntan's park was near to where i worked bristol was cut off one day in december 1968. this was the only way for the duchess of kent to get in for an engagement so royal train how things have changed sedans park station was put in to cope with urban expansion bristol could do with more stations like that to counteract inner city congestion keynesian and summerdale station as it was called then brutally lost the connection to the chocolate factory there on the left no more chocolate the motive power survives though at bitten there once was a station here at saltford it apparently even had a station buffet the pub opposite that must have been fun photographers everywhere capture much that passes away north somerset cold used to travel these rails those are the empties going back nostalgic spot for me i used to live nearby as a child this is particularly poignant long ashton station with a bypass being built over it this is it today thank you planners leaving stations for a moment how do you add interest to a dmu well this is one way and you can see which way this one's going at cardiff arguments raged over whether the hst was a dmu or not this is the prototype on its maiden paying voyage day or two later resurfacing was underway at steventon road the high-speed train dramatically put western region and the rest in time of british rail back on its feet london swinton bath and bristol all now within easy reach of each other on a daily basis for many patronized even by her majesty note the short form an embryonic classic class so royal train for a day and now almost forgotten species were the diesel mechanicals multiple units and fixed formations sent them on their way oh dear they could be interesting at times this was a denizen of mere headquary while the mas signal box is being constructed the line appears open to the docks bristol docks and how about this little fellow all a relic of loose coupled freight all this has gone of course upper big in south wales on a phoenix visit then and now though the good news is that there has been some partial reopening and more might follow in conclusion milk to basin bridge was supplied by hi-mix after steam finished taken away as you see here by imex then it's grouped up at hybrid station and away thank you for watching
