frustrated with his neighbor's request to cut down a tree he obliged leaving the Fallen mess in their yard prompting the neighbor to realize the aftermath of his demands the Second Story Joe faced the wrath of a lawyer who relentlessly seized his assets leaving him homeless and without a truck a powerful lesson in karma the third story in her quest to encourage her dyslexic child's reading a mom confronts a teacher about a band library book highlighting the power of reading today's first story is keep telling me to cut your tree down good luck cleaning it this happened last year my neighbors have a fairly big tree and have branches hanging over our yard I know I can't really say anything about it so I annoyingly collect Dead Leaves and branches that often fall into my yard so I had enough and bought a pole saw and sawed off a few until my neighbors excitingly ran up to me and said I can saw the whole tree off so it won't ever grow back I blankly looked at him hoping he would at least offer money or something but I basically said I'm only sawing off what's on my side of the property he kept trying to convince me I'll never have to worry about branches if I cut off his whole tree I kept saying no he shut up for maybe an hour and then offered me a few skewers he happened to barbecue this was literally our first time interacting so it was pretty insulting how much he's sucking up I declined L his food and he got a bit hissy I saw that there was a lot more branches left for me to saw off so I thought even more it actually might be a great idea to saw their whole 20ft tree so I gladly went up to the neighbor and said you know what I thought about what you said I think it is better off I cut down the tree so I don't have to deal with it even while taking the skewer he offered me earlier his smile became bright again as I walked myself around the fence and went to town trees timbered down I went to the neighbor and said all right glad to help have to go back to my yard to clean up he became hesitant and said when can you clean my yard up clean your yard you only told me to cut down your tree this isn't my yard I'm not cleaning this up he instantly got so red and I could tell it's taking him a long while for him to process what now he has to deal with I took my saw back and even told him it's a rental and have to return it soon I decided to make this post because this past year it was left in his yard and wasn't touched he just hired someone to Simply get rid of it hasn't spoken to me since and had to say his skewer tasted really good edit it's it's legal what I did it's my yard and I can do whatever I want in it I'll enjoy the other trees that aren't in my property a different branch ripped off and broke part of my fence and he didn't have to pay for any of it so it's another good reason to make cut more off also this guy kept bugging me while I was trying to do yard work and it was really annoying he pretty much said hey it's okay you can cut the tree down just the audacity the next story is a lawyer's Pro revenge on a wife beater let's call him Joe I have to call him something the the man I ruined but I can't call him by his real name so let's call him Joe Joe was a wife beater I was hired by Joe's brother-in-law the brother of the wife that beat Joe my client was also Joe's ex- business partner aside from the whole you beat up my sister thing my client had another beef with Joe a serious business beef my client took it to court and gave me the case to handle Joe and his lawyers fought me long and hard Joe was confident that his BS and outright perjury would carry the day it had always worked before his BS and his fists had won him a good settlement with his ex-wife free of Child Support so maybe he thought that threats and lies would carry the day once more but he was wrong and after the trial I had a judgment against him a big judgment far bigger than he could pay Joe twisted and he turned and he shimmed and shaked but after a while I'd located and taken all his assets it was easy really Joe had no thought of consequences and so he didn't lyer up until it was too late if one of my clients ever sues you you're in trouble because my clients lawyer up before they even know your name but Joe didn't lawyer up until the process server threw the papers at his feet and by then it was far too late I went through Joe's finances like a meat grinder and after a while Joe had one property left a house and he clung to that house for it was rented out and his sole source of income Joe lived in the unfinished basement and he survived on what the upstairs tenants paid him he cashed their rent checks at Payday Loan places paying Hefty fees but it was worth it because he knew that I'd garnish any bank account that he opened Joe managed to to hide his rental place from me for a while because he owned it through a numbered company but my investigator found him one day and followed him home Joe self-re his way through the next stage which took a couple of years while I punctured his corporate veils and his sad efforts at a fraudulent conveyance but in the end I had his last house the house where he lived in the unfinished basement Joe stepped out one day to get a pack of cigarettes and when he came back the sheriff had changed the locks can my client at least live in the basement Joe's lawyer said to me pro bono because by this point Joe had nothing to pay lawyers I knew the pro bono guy he practiced law nearby as I was talking to him I could see pro bono guy's office window across the parking lot from my office tower window asked the purchaser I said it's out of my hands and it was I told Joe's lawyer that the new owner a nominee one of my client's employees wouldn't let him back into his sh basement apartment Joe a man who had owned this and that here and there and all over town had just lost the last thing he owned on earth except for his truck he's still had his truck left Joe's truck was this big a gas guzzling Beast that he drove around in it was too old and too frail to be worth seizing so I let Joe keep it and I was glad I did that because now the truck was where Joe slept until he made a mistake and lost his truck too he lost his truck the day I got a phone call from the tenants at the house that Joe used to own he came back and parked his truck across the driveway the tenants said adding that Joe had gone nuts he' parked his truck there in a rage out of spite then walked into town saying he'd be back later that day to sleep in his truck can you get around the truck I asked the tenant could not the driveway was blocked I called one of the tow truck guys that I used to defend back in my criminal lawyer days and in a couple of hours that truck was gone and parked somewhere else somewhere special in accordance with my Specific Instructions my guy wants his truck back the pro bono lawyer said the next day when he called me not happening I said I stood in my office 15 floors above the parking lot and looked down where I imagined my pro bono counterpart was standing in his office facing the same lot but you have no right to the truck he said he has no right to block a man's driveway I replied it was terrible really standing up high pronouncing words that took away a man's final asset the last thing he owned on Earth I imagine that this must be what God feels like before he strips a man of everything and sends him to hell are you really going to make me go to court over this said pro bono guy do what you got to do I said and pro bono guy said his client was coming in the next day to sign an affidavit and then they were going to court to get the truck back but I was unconcerned the next day was bright and the Sun was shining and it was 9:00 a.m. as I looked out the window and sipped my coffee my phone rang I picked up it was pro bono man why didn't you tell me that Joe's truck was parked right outside my office his voice was tight and I could tell that he must have been shaking with anger is that so I said staring out at Joe's truck parked 15 stories below me how careless am I bayith to leave the truck where your client could easily take it back I really must speak to him very funny my client's going to sue no he isn't he's going to get in that truck and drive away right now I told my toe guy to fill up the tank and he gave it an oil change too Grace tell your client to get in his truck and drive off and that if I ever see that truck again I'll seize it to satisfy the rest of my client's judgment pro bono guy tried to argue but I was firm then I put the phone down and picked up my coffee a few minutes later Joe walked out of his lawyer's office and over to his truck as he walked I saw that there was no longer a bounce to his step The Joy had gone out of him Joe wasn't the first guy I ruined and he won't be the last but he's the only one whose final ruin I witnessed from onh high from my office and it was one of the most powerful experiences of my life watching a man walk to his truck knowing that I had stripped him of everything else he had and that he owed his possession of his last asset his truck to my Mercy Joe drove away his big a ancient truck spilling clouds of smoke from the exhaust I was pretty sure I'd never hear from him again and I never did edit I'm not young I grow old I practiced law for well over 30 years and lately I decided that I would tell people about the things I've done and have had done to me and the things I've been through I have a lot of stories to tell the third story is when Petty creates a book Dragon this is from my childhood rotary phones AC and cars wasn't standard and written checks were common use my mom could not only be Petty she could be a Karen and take things extremely literal at times this normally happened when someone threatened her safety or her children's well-being and education the players are M for Mom t for teacher P for principal and me I'm also not completely sure this is petty enough I don't think it's Karen enough and all the tags I looked for within education didn't fit backstory I have dyslexia and as a young child had Beyond deplorable reading skills deplorable enough the school talked about holding me back a year to work on those reading skills so my mom knew I'd do just about anything for non- chore earnings took me to the city library and we made a deal for each book I read and each half-page synopsis and overview I wrote I would receive a quarter thank Dr SU and Golden Books were right up my alley at the start as my skills improved the books became larger and longer because they and reading became less daunting i' graduated from Dr Seuss to Popular Science Publications anthologies then to novels The Librarians were great help introducing and directing me to other books that seemed to perk my curiosity and also my mom didn't care what books I read as long as I read backstory done I was walking from one class to the next and a teacher stopped me and took my library book and refused to return it when I refused to go to class and let said teacher keep my library book the book and I were sent to the principal's office and mom was called Mom arrived to see me sitting in a chair outside the principal's office and after she was assured I had not been physically harmed she was introduced to the teacher and we were ushered into the principal's office the teacher waves my book my mom and the teacher informs her I had it mom confused tells them she was with me when I checked it out all these years later I still mostly remember the conversation of verbatim T this isn't appropriate for school m a book isn't appropriate s Taps book cover T this tap tap isn't appropriate M again it's a book Huff T grabs book and slaps P desk with each word this is not appropriate for school not liking being talked down to Mom's voice is sharp a book has words insides words inside a book educate this is a place of Education how are words bound into a book in a school not appropriate T grabs the bridge of his nose this is a place of educ this waves book is not appropriate in a place of Education M are you saying my child isn't allowed to have a public library book in a public school T looks to P who gives t a continue wave in motion T tosses book to mom who looks at the book and back to him T this isn't appropriate for a student mom hands me the book m to me I love this book when's it do back T to P really you're going to encourage this him stands and shushes any response that might happen to say something stupid I can't believe you've dragged my child here to be reprimanded for having a book this is absolutely deplorable t a child shouldn't have that it's inappropriate M it's a book she's reading how can you say a dyslexic child reading is bad T it's a band Book M I don't care she's reading P whoa whoa mom many school systems across the country have removed this book from circulation because it's been deemed inappropriate in those school districts T this book isn't banned on this school district your recom recommendation for detention is revoked mom to ensure this type of confusion doesn't happen again can the public library books stay at home me I'll lift any in all age restrictions on the school library you can check any of those out and they're approved for all reading ages in this school me Mom what's a band Book M books that make little- minded people uncomfortable me I want to read them all mom and I left the school our next Library visit I told the Librarians all about the band books how Mom stuck it to the mean teacher and I wanted to read all the band books they had mom said I can read all the band books I wanted after I read her favorite book The Death of Ivan ilich by Tolstoy I was in e8th grade when this happened and a freshman in high school when I finally finished Tolstoy if you're wondering what book I had that sent me to the
