the cuban beans that i eat are savory af this is too much vinegar for me too much vinegar hi everyone my name is dashay joslin and i'm from the dominican republic my name is alana and i'm repping cuba my name is victoria bukomi v i'm repping boricua let me tell you a little bit some about rice and beans real quick rice and beans can be both a side dish and a main dish you can eat it any time of day as a main dish as a side she's versatile okay it's just like the go-to thing that you eat every day my grandma used to live right next door to me she'll scream out the window victoria camila and then i'll just go next door and she'll always have rice beans and chicken arroz con pichuela is a popular dish in my home because we eat it with everything it's the perfect side it complements pretty much any dish switch i've been making rice and beans i would say honestly i must say since like 2015. my grandma definitely put me on my country's rice and beans is the best because it's savory other caribbean countries have like curry or some type of sweetness but ours is savory i will win today because i am a real new yorker i'll betray making mommy [Music] okay got the acaperado in this one okay this smells really good some peppers okay we got some olives in here too okay it's already like giving me a couple of extra points right there god these are good i've never seen the olives just in the beans itself personally usually i see it kind of with the rice and beans together so that's new i'm not like a huge huge red beans person but i will say objectively and fairly that this is probably like the best red beans i've ever had i think the peppers should have been a little more chopped and i'm not sure if it's like normal to have the olives in there but i could be entirely wrong and mistaken right now i think this dish is from puerto rico because of the olives i think with the mix of the potatoes with it the double starch i think maybe puerto rican i would give this like a solid eight and a half out of ten i'm gonna go with not seven seven because i just need a little more flavor there are certain things throwing me off a little bit but it's still very good there's actually nothing i would add to this i think it's really really well seasoned also wait wait wait wait wait i'm gonna have to bring this to an eye this is important if you know you know this right here is cocoon all right that's the crunchy part of the rice that you you when you make it from scratch and it's at the bottom of the pan and you scrape it up and there's a little tiny bits of burnt parts ciao fantastic all right this is a nine it's a nine because there's going in there [Music] first time i made rice and beans is when i moved to the west coast because i had to make it for myself my mom taught me how to make rice and beans who learned from my grandmother so it's just kind of been passed down what i think makes the dominican republic's rice and beans the best is the love dominicans like to say so dominicana hasta la tambor from the heart from the drum of the heart and i think that our food comes from that and it just kind of translates once you taste it [Music] okay this smells like a really bomb like dominican spot it looks a little dry i'm not gonna lie it's a little dry i don't know if it's because it was like sitting out for a while all right the consistency is good you got the aju the sauce if you will you got the onion which is crucial critical starting off strong this looked a little like i went to the dominican spot real quick you know quick rice and beans but i'm gonna try it open i love how this tastes it does give carry out a little bit but it's a good carryout i definitely taste the cilantro a little bit i just taste the different spices like they probably used adobo they probably use sasson what i would have added in maybe is a tiny bit more garlic i feel like it just needed a little bit more garlic or even some a little bit more vinegar to just kind of like oh you know what i mean this tastes really good i really love how this tastes this tastes dominican this definitely tastes like dominican rice i would give this a solid like eight out of ten i would give it a solid seven you know what i mean if i was at a cookout and there was a whole bunch of other meats with it and i'm like okay i need to balance out this plate and i saw these rice and beans there all right i'm gonna throw it on the plate am i gonna be like oh my gosh yes this this rice and beans right here nah [Music] i started making black beans and rice with my mom since i was a little kid she would sometimes quiz me on the ingredients to make sure that i had it down pat what makes my specific dish stand out is the a little bit of additions that we've made over the years to the traditional cuban black beans and rice one main thing is just the two capfuls of vinegar when you have onion and you have garlic and you just have that vinegar it just elevates all of the flavor profiles to the front and center of your mouth it just makes the dish turn into something completely different i believe that i will win because everything on this plate is made fresh for the most part there are some store-bought items in here because you know we busy but there's so much love put into this that i just can't see this not winning ooh i already know off rip these are cuban beans at first glance it looks like it's going to have a lot of flavor it smells really good though i can't even lie i'm still team dominican republic but it does smell quite good i think it's from cuba i think it's like this is a cuban rice and beans okay the smell this is not the smell i'm personally used to when i'm eating cuban style beans this smells more like jamaican a little bit oh okay i think it's cooked really well the beans are like soft but not like overly mushy the rice is pretty perfect it tastes like vinegar again i like savory um maybe vinegar is a savory like ingredient in some cases but i think the vinegar is definitely overpowering everything okay we got a contender here because this is quite good i probably would finish with some plate for sure this is not it this is not it like the cuban beans that i eat are savory af like i taste a little bit more saltiness this is too much vinegar for me too much vinegar on a scale of one to ten i'd give it like four this is a nine this is a nine it's very true it's so good i like it i could eat this whole plate [Music] i just want to thank jennifer lopez and fajo for you know putting on for the community and shout out to the one and only og abuela cause you put me on girl you put me on [Music] [Music] [Music] you
