hey it's Meredith and I'm back with another premiere rush tutorial this time we're gonna be covering premiere rush on the desktop from start to finish premiere rush is really great for YouTube creators bloggers content creators anybody creating you know social media social video content right because it's it's kind of the best of both worlds it's simple and easy to use easy to learn you can use it on your phone you can use it on your desktop but it has all of the essential editing functions of Premiere Pro Premiere Pro it's kind of like a black hole it's not ideal for somebody that just wants to create social video content so premiere rush really kind of bridges that gap I covered how to use premiere rush on the iPhone in my very last video I'll link that for you here as you know with Adobe Creative Cloud the edits that you make on your phone will sync to premiere rush on your desktop and vice versa so I'm going to show you exactly what that looks like plus we're gonna start a project and go step by step start to finish over on my Mac so let's open a premiere rush here on my desktop the only project that I currently have in here is the one that I created in my last tutorial which was how to use premiere rush on your iPhone so he created a little pre-wedding sequence on my phone using premiere rush that's automatically syncing using the Creative Cloud to the Ducks desktop version and I'm not going to open that quite yet I want to show you how to create a new project with premiere rush on the desktop so we're gonna hit this blue button create a new project and we can choose media from really anywhere I have the these files from my GoPro Hero 5 black I have a lot of clips here and I don't know that I necessarily want to import them all at once so let's see I worked on like the beef for the wedding stuff maybe this one so just like on the app you can select these things and you can make them go in whatever order you want then you can always rearrange them also but I think I'm just going to select a bunch of different shots here this wedding reception was in a barn there wasn't a whole lot of natural lighting and so they're gonna be kind of dark but that's that should be enough that's plenty of clips so we're gonna put wedding reception as our project name and I do want to have it synching with that Creative Cloud just in case I want to pick this up on my phone and add it some on my phone and I'm gonna hit create so it'll take a few moments to put your clips together and get your project started but there we go so now I have my Clips down here the timeline is of course down here at the bottom and then you have your preview window as well and this is really it's the same tools that are available on the iPhone app is just there in different places so let me just show you around here a little bit on the upper left-hand side you have the blue plus button that's so that you can add more media to your project below that is this little file box this will open up your project asset so these are the clips that we just added to our project on the lower left-hand side of this menu is the little scissors tool that's where you can split your clip in half and if we do that let's see if I just put this somewhere and say I want to split it there it's going to take that clip and split it right in half I'm going to hit command Z and undo below that we have the duplicate button so that's going to duplicate whatever clip you have selected and then we also have the trash bin if you want to remove a clip you can also hit the delete button on your keyboard and below that is the button to expand the audio so that you can see your waveforms a little bit here and below that you can toggle your tracks and when you have this opened up here you can see that you have maybe hard to see on the video but you have of tracks available to you if you want to move some things around kind of like that you can also lock a track or adjust the volume mute the track and make it completely invisible while you work on something else or focus on the audio so I'm gonna put that away I want to come up here to the right-hand side the top right this is where you're gonna find where you add your titles and then below that your transitions your color your audio adjustments and your crop and rotate adjustment couple of other things that are almost a little bit hidden one is this ability to adjust your monitor size which then also adjusts your your timeline size so if you feel like you need to see what's happening a little bit bigger on your timeline you can just grab this and adjust things like that you can also zoom in on your timeline I don't see a button for this but if you press the plus button on your keyboard it'll zoom way way way in and if you press the minus button to zoom way way way out and if I hit play here you'll notice that we have the the audio levels here over on the right-hand side and while we're playing here just notice that you can press the space bar to pause or play where you're at in your timeline you can pause that there you can also advance one frame forward or one frame back and you can also go to the end point meaning it'll go to the end of that clip that you're on so this tells you here what let's see this tells you if you hover over these what to press to navigate so play is space play or pause you can press the right arrow to go one frame to the right or you can press the down arrow to go to the next clip or the up arrow to go to the previous clip and to find where you want to be on a clip really quickly and easily you can just drag this scrubber bar the time indicator bar just drag it where you need it to go you also have the ability to drag from up here okay and if you want to view your video fullscreen you can view it fullscreen there's my husband there and lastly I don't know why they hide this away but if you click these three little dots it says more playback and sequence options this is where you can switch to a portrait mode or square mode you can also select your preview quality so if your computer's running a little slow and your playback is a little bit choppy if you select low then your computer doesn't have to work so hard while you're editing to show you what it looks like so might look a little fuzzy a little bit low quality while you're editing but it won't be that way when you export so that's where you can find all of that stuff there I'm gonna keep mine on low because I'm recording a screencast and sometimes the main computer doesn't cooperate with me and we'll explore these other options for orientation in just a little bit when we make a vertical version of this video so now that you know where all of the tools and menu options are let's show you some of the actual editing functions as you go here so all of your clips are together with the audio so what I usually like to do is just start at the beginning and focus on any pieces and parts of a clip that you know that you want to keep I'm gonna delete this very first clip I don't think that's really adding anything so I don't usually make a whole lot of decisions at first I like to just kind of scrub through here this is where they're announcing the parents we're gonna keep this clip so in this next clip the DJ is announcing the parents of the bride and groom and then they're gonna announce you know the bride and groom are gonna come in and one's gonna clap and cheer and blah blah blah so I might use some of that audio and then have some b-roll over it I'm not totally sure but right here where my scrubber bar is this is where the DJ starts talking so I could either split this clip using the scissor tool and get rid of this first part where nothing's really happening but I'm gonna hit undo and I'm gonna hit undo again or you can kind of use the beginning and end of a clip sort of grab it like a handle and just drag it and then you're trimming right up to that point right where your blue scrubber bar is so you may have clips that you simply want to trim the beginning and the end off or you may have Clips like this one that may end up getting chopped up as you go and then removing middle sections of it so I know that this clip is gonna take a little more finessing because there's announcing going on there's cheering there's dancing but we know that at the end the bride and groom come in so we're just gonna keep this as as it is for right now now I know you definitely don't want to sit here and watch me you know edit my brother's wedding reception so I just want to make sure that you have all of the tools and everything that you need to be able to edit your videos so there's a couple other things you may want to look at I'm gonna expand my tracks here you can bring a clip up and just kind of grab it and pull it over so that it's over top of another clip to use as b-roll if you wanted to do that now this does this is going to have your audio along with it so you may need to mute one or the other but that's how easy it is to just pull pull your Clips out to use them as as b-roll so let's take a look at some of these tools up here we'll get two titles in just a second I want to show you let's look at crop and rotate so if we open up this panel you can see that we can move this clip to the left or the right so that would be the horizontal position let's leave it right in the middle we have the vertical position of course let's put that one back where it belongs and you have rotation so if you needed to adjust your horizon or something you could rotate it like that if you wanted to the other thing you may want to do under scale this would be essentially like zooming in so you could use this too let's just say you needed to adjust your horizon just a little bit if you if you did this you would need to scale up a little bit that looks a little bit weird so we don't want to leave it like that we definitely want our rotation to be at zero there but that's what you would do there it's a little confusing sometimes people always wonder how can i zoom in when I'm editing a video and you want to look for the word scale instead of the word zoom under the advanced menu we have the ability to crop so you could just you know crop it just like that so I suppose you could probably do something like a picture within a picture if you crop this clip move it over top of the others and then you can see that if I move the horizontal position here then we have a picture within a picture situation okay which it obviously looks terrible I would not leave it quite like that let's put let's put my husband back together there and then you have an opacity control you have edged feather which kind of makes it look like a vignette or something that looks terrible so we're gonna we're gonna put that back so that is the transformation or transform menu and if you click it again that menu will go away the audio menu above that gives you some options like adjusting the clip the volume so if you have background music and you want the background music to be the focus then you could adjust the volume of the people that are talking in your video down or you could do it the other way around you know maybe you want your background music to be down low but you want the talking to be able to be heard this is where you would adjust that clip volume here and you can see the the waveforms you can see them go down so you can kind of see see where you're at I just want this to be at a normal spot 50 there we go you can also mute your clip so if you have just a couple clips that you want to be completely muted select the clip hit that mute button you'll see that it's muted there if you wanted the entire audio track to be muted then you would come over to your to the whole track to the whole timeline here and just mute that whole track but for just one clip you want to select the clip and come into the audio menu to do that under the advanced menu here this is really going to depend on what's going on in your video what the audio sounds like and what what you want to have happen so premiere rush automatically sort of assumes what's going on in your videos and you can see that like in this clip right here there's a music symbol over here it's just I think I don't know miscellaneous or other it's calling it other types of audio if it was just somebody talking right here this thinks that it's just somebody talking and it's probably music playing but this will have a person talking and so it will adjust the sound of the audio in your clip based on what it thinks is happening in your clip which is kind of cool to have some automatic editing happen to your volume or excuse me to your audio which it's kind of cool to have that kind of automatic editing happen to your audio but you may want to check things out and make sure that it really sounds the way that you want it to sound and ingest these these clips here now I want to go over some of these other ones here so we're gonna close that audio menu we're gonna open up the color menu and this is where you can add a preset or you might think of it as a filter to your clips we have Fuji Beach mono matrix gold generally I don't really mess with the hose but you're welcome to do that if you want to you can also hit this edit button and this is where you can adjust your color manually yourself so you may you know if you wanted to bring up your exposure you could do that here so for example you know inside this barn the lighting is not that great you could come in here and bump up the exposure a little bit but you're gonna see that the quality is going to degrade a little bit so you can play with these if you want to but this is gonna be under the color menu and then you have to hit that edit button and then under the advanced menu you have a faded film look you have sharpening you have the vignette that you can create if you want to and if you create a set of adjustments to the color you can create your own preset so if I created a preset that was like inside the barn and I have a lot of Clips inside the barn so if I didn't want to have to go in and edit the color and the exposure for all of these manually every time save that as a preset and then it'll be down here under your presets and then I could just apply this clip or excuse me I could apply this preset to any of these inside the barn Clips right so let's get rid of this color menu over here we have transitions they don't give you a whole lot to choose from here personally I'm not real big on transitions if you've been following me for a while you probably know that I just like a good standard cut usually but if I have to then cross-dissolve is okay I'm gonna drag it down and it's gonna go between these two clips right here let me zoom in so you can see it so we have a cross-dissolve and I can make this longer just by dragging it either way and you'll notice that it's it's cross dissolving the whole the the image right and then it's also cross dissolving the audio but there's their separate adjustments right so that is actually kind of clever cross dissolve would just mean that one clip is going to start to dissolve in essentially or start to appear while the one that's going out is going to start to disappear so they overlap a little bit and then and then they they keep going so you also have a dip to black if I bring that down it's gonna come over like this so this is gonna dip to black and then from black gonna come back up on another clip so dip to black works really well at the end so does a dip to white I wouldn't put these between all of your Clips it's gonna get a little bit crazy and you can adjust the duration of your transition over here as well and above the transitions menu is the titles menu and I like to keep my titles pretty simple maybe something at the very beginning so this isn't the very beginning of the of the video here but I just wanted to find a good a good spot to add some kind of a title so you have a bunch of options available to you here and you'll have to play around with what what you want to do and what kind of makes sense for you in my case here I think I want to do this one here so I'm just going to click it and drag it down it kind of gets added to the timeline as its own clip right so you can treat it like it's own clip you can make it longer you can make it shorter but it does have some animation to a here right just like that you obviously would need to customize this a little bit you need to be able to put in your own words there so once you figure out what you want your title to look like you can hit this edit button over here and we're gonna drop this down you can adjust yeah you can adjust the typeface that you want to use find something that works for you or you can just keep keep what's already there see that looks bad but that's okay we're going to need this a little bit a little bit bigger here you also have a couple other whoo bass line shifts gonna bring it down a little bit and you can make it bigger you can make it smaller and you have the option to change your color here I mean I actually want mine to be white but if you wanted to change your color you could do that here with the color fill like so you can also select if you want to have an outline color so maybe blue got the outline to be black for this it's a little hard it's a little hard to see when it is um selected like that but if we bring our outline size up then you can kind of see what that looks like like that it's I mean I would that's not how I would leave it but I just want to show you what it looks like there you also have the shadow so you can change the color of the shadow to something crazy and then under the shadow you can select the opacity of the shadow the blur of the shadow and the distance of the shadow oh yeah what is happening so there's our shadow there I mean that that does look pretty horrible but that's how it works okay so under shape see how we have this purple bar you can change the color of that so let's we definitely want it to be as ugly as possible at this point right so let's go with something yellow yeah awesome and then what is our color fill gonna do I'm not totally sure but if it's green it'll be hideous so I'm not sure what it could we may not have any shape do you have a color fill because it's just a line so there's the title now we want to change what this says right let's just say can let's make this big congratulations like that and yeah I think we're good we're good with this let's see what it looks like awesome the colors could use some work but that's how you create a title and you can put as many titles in there as you want so once you have gone through your whole video here and you're happy with it one kind of weird thing with premiere rush is that you don't save your project it just automatically saves and syncs as you go and it's syncing to your Creative Cloud account so that you can pull this up on your phone and continue editing it from there but you don't have to worry about saving it however when you're done when you're ready to share this upload it to YouTube put it on Facebook or whatever you want to come over to this top left and hit the share button you can change you know you can say wedding reception and we have some advanced settings here right now it's going to export it automatically it's going to kind of make some assumptions about how what we want the quality to be and stuff like that so you can also choose whether you want it to be 1080 or scale down to 720 for Facebook or YouTube or what-have-you so we're just gonna hit with automatic from right now which is going to be 1080p full-hd that's perfect our frame rate is fine our audio is fine and we want it to be high the highest quality there and this is going to save see we have a local selected this is gonna save to my hard drive right it's right now it's selected to save to My Documents folder so if I hit that I should be able to select a different folder we'll choose the desktop and it will even tell you your estimated file size you also have the opportunity to have it go directly to YouTube Facebook Instagram or your Behance account if you have one of those and I don't like to upload things directly from a piece of software I like to look at the exported video first in preview it on my desktop before I upload it to social media but you could go straight to one of those places it's a little more complicated because if something doesn't work and it doesn't show up where you think it's supposed to show up then you don't know where you know who dropped the ball so I like to export it directly to my desktop and then upload it to social media from there so once you have all of your settings all situated you can hit the export button I don't think I want to sit here and export this whole entire thing for you though because I want to go back and show you what you can do we're gonna hit cancel render let's go back to our edit screen now we have this horizontal video right and this would be perfect for YouTube it would be perfect for Facebook but what if you wanted to take just a few highlights from this and maybe create an Instagram story or IG TV or something like that right well you could take this whole entire project in sequence and make the whole thing portrait by going to these hidden three dots and coda orientation and portrait and this is going to make your frame in portrait mode this is the exact dimensions that you would need for an a vertical video for IG TV or Instagram stories or Facebook stories but you can see that you obviously need to make some changes to to this because it's a it's a horizontal video clip right so if you come to the frame menu here this is where you can let's see we would want to scale it up a little bit and then if you needed to you can change the horizontal position or the vertical position so you can also leave it just like this and put a title above it and below it so that you're not losing quality by scaling up but you're still filling the whole frame with something and then you would export it just the same way that you did the first time if you go to share and it's going to export at the resolution and frame size that you have this set at so instead of 1920 by 1080 it's gonna be 1080 by 1920 so 1080 pixels wide by 1920 high and you would hit export and we're not gonna do that because I want to go back again so you could flip-flop back and forth between these two things landscape and portrait but I mean it's a good idea to edit one I want to edit the the YouTube version in my videos first and then bring what you want over into a portrait oriented project now if you are going to be creating different versions of the same video for different social media platforms like I just showed you you may not want to I chopped up the project you just worked on to make it work for Instagram stories for example so what you can do is make a duplicate let me get rid of this menu make a duplicate of this entire sequence and edit the duplicate so come over to your project assets and so this has our clips that are in this project way down at the bottom you're going to see sequence three that's the name of this project wedding reception sequence three if you come down to these little three buttons you can hit duplicate and you can even hit rename so you can say like so this is going to be a reception Instagram story and hit rename now you have two identical sequences and what they're both identical you just edited them and then made made a duplicate so now you could change this orientation to portrait and you could chop this up as much as you wanted get rid of a bunch of stuff and maybe just create an Instagram story highlight reel right if you will and the original project will stay the same so you have your original edit for YouTube and Facebook that a horizontal landscape version of the video and then you have another sequence where you can chop things up a little bit to create a portrait orientation video for Instagram or Facebook stories so that is how you use adobe premiere rush on the desktop if i hit this home button you're going to see the project show up here in my projects pane so we have our pre ret pre-wedding project that we edited on our phone we have the wedding reception that we edited here on our desktop now don't forget that all of the edits we just made on a desktop are gonna sync to premiere rush on your phone where you can edit them further if you want or add more media to your project if you're not sure how premiere rush works on your phone I've got a tutorial that I can hook you up with here stay tuned hit subscribe show me a like and let me know in the comments if there are any questions that I can answer for you in a future video
