I enjoy talking about myself believe me it's fun for me coming up on this edition I don't like children I don't like animals don't like I don't like adults either so it doesn't matter wherever I look I'm unhappy this former stand-up comic is a true Hollywood success story [Music] [Music] Adams got a nice wonderful subversion to him you know and there's a kind of uncomfortableness about the world that Adam has that's really fun to watch so unbelievably funny but genuine he's not doesn't try to be a ham he's just a genuinely funny human being I think he sort of downplays that he's a really good actor I think you can really tell that there's a lot going on there and I love that he's funny and I think he's brilliant and he makes me laugh amazingly much but it's the fact that he has such a good heart that that makes him so special for success audiences identified with him according to screened international us editor Mike Goodrich Sandler plays low-key perfection Adam Sandler is America's everyman he is funny he's nerdy he's working class he's like the Jimmy Stewart of today's movies people come to my movies so like this 25 year old guys is 12 year old guys you know Sandler has been described as a natural comedian who makes people laugh even when his jokes aren't funny anymore Adam Richard Sandler on September 9 1966 in Brooklyn New York music was an early passion I think way back when I was a little kid his mom made him take singing lessons so I think it started back then by age 17 New York University was practicing his comedy routine at small clubs I used to be addicted to it where I needed to get on stage as much as possible I remember we would do that to two or three shows a night and it was that choice you would make you have a good set on your second one you'd be like okay I can call it a night should I go do that third one and risk doing bad and being miserable all night long Adam had friends who provided me with psychological staged his college roommate Tim Herlihy shown here in a scene from mr. deeds help the Allen I just told him when I had 17 he was my roommate in school I was gonna be a comedian and he was he he went to law school and he's a really bright guy and he just said hey all right get some jokes I said do you write jokes he goes no it doesn't seem hard during his college freshman year I had him landed a recurring role on the hit sitcom The Cosby Show that led to the low-budget comedy going overboard Sandler became a regular on TV Saturday Night Live in 1991 after graduating with a bachelor of fine arts degree because of his success on Saturday Night Live Bob Coltrane picked Sandler for a bit part in his comedy bomb shakes the clown by 1990 Warren graduated to a larger role in the airheads and mixed nuts co-starring Steve Martin but Sandler didn't find big-screen success until he loved Saturday Night Live and started writing movies with his old college roommate Tim Hurley together they created happy gilmore and Billy Madison would you like to try writing some words in cursive on the blackboard today okay sure it's a lot of people's dream to get to do school all over again you just thought it would be fun to write about that my buddy Tim Herlihy we wrote it together he felt the same thing so we just wrote about a lot of memories we had growing up both Billy Madison and happy gilmore atop the box office after a few hit movies entertains Adam approached me on Saturday live when he told me you know we should do an action film together I said yeah then he you know a couple months later came with script that you know I really liked the premise of it matter the way did the project wasn't on my shoulders it was it was fun to have two two guys that constantly trying to think of the right thing to do out the area to just carry the story along unfortunately bulletproof misfired at the box office but Sandler scored a bull's-eye with a romantic comedy the wedding he was 31 this was his first five million dollar paycheck and typically Adam share the wealth with his college buddies the wedding singer is written by college roommate Tim Hurley co-stars friend Alan covert and is directed by colleague Frank Karachi you know we've been hanging out since then and we're thinking of romance comedy we kind of all came up with the idea of Adam playing a wedding singer who gets jilted at the altar and then he has to go back to wedding singing and then just destroys the wedding cuz he's just so miserable you know so that's sort of how it came to be it's an 80s movie it said the 80s and the feeling of the movies when I when I see it it feels like when when it's over at that feel and I used to get from some eighties movies so yeah the wedding singer co-starred Drew Barrymore she and Adam wanted to create a movie that would appeal to a wide audience we really wanted to make an attainable fun romantic comedy not only the kind that we would like as an audience member but it was fun to sort of create these two people that I think Adam and I both respect and admire and aspire to be Robby and Julia are really cool the chemistry between Drew Barrymore and audience oohs it was the wedding singer in 1998 she came out in February and for Valentine's Day and was a huge head that completely turned him into a movie star nine months later Sandler was back on familiar ground with the woman again it was produced and directed written and co-starred his college buddies this time I had a place of college football water boy who becomes a star linebacker I thought it would be fun to have a a guy who gets picked on a lot you know has a lot of pent-up rage get to release it and tackle somebody that's high quality 8qu already the Waterboys simple premise evolves into a huge box office head a year later Sandler was producing movies for his friends to star in he was also earning eight million dollars a picture and had another head in Big Daddy twin brothers : dylan sprouse played Sandler's adoptive son in the movie and at the premiere it was obvious now in his mid-30s Santa was riding high he had just accepted 20 million dollars to make a comedy about the son of the devil little Mickey very quickly that him soundless joined this phenomenally elite club in Hollywood called the 20 million dollar club you know it's very rare he's right up there with Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks and continues to get that kind of level of salary for a movie me and my buddies we write the script and then we put it together and director Steve Brill he's an old friend of mine and one of the writers so we kind of do it do it all together we write it together we shoot it together edit it together mix it together we do it as a team usually it starts with Adam walking in the room and going I just had a great idea I want to play the goofy son of the devil whose mom is an angel you know and that's how it'll start and then everyone people leave a go oh that sounds good oh yeah you know on this one everyone went oh let's get going that sounds great was created by Sandberg new production company happy Madison named after his hit movies happy gilmore and Billy Madison but Little Nicky had a devil of a time finding an audience his most famous career misstep of course was Little Nicky was a very expensive film it was overblown it wasn't very funny it came out on thousands of screens and flopped hugely and his famous for being a flop but he he managed to come out of that intact and his next few films after that were huge successes in 2002 share the diversified in story taking risks after producing and styling the remade mr. deeds he lowered his salary for the art house romance punch drum loved the film co-starring Emily Watson won awards at the can and Toronto Film Festival's and Sandburg under Golden Globe nomination the difference between a comedian and a comic actor I think the great comedians like Peter Sellars are also tragic figures you know they mix comedy and pathos and I think Adam Sandler did that to perfection and punch-drunk love he took his laugh out loud funny image and turn it into a character that you could sympathize with him and feel sorry for and feel empathy for with punch-drunk love under his belt Adam Sandler was ready for new challenges he found one with eight crazy nights an animated movie with a Chanukah theme I remember when I was growing up it was always me and one other kid who were Jewish in class and and then like 30 people who weren't Jewish and I so I figured one day we would make a movie that included two Chanukah and there you go 2002 ended with yet another Sandler production the hot chick starring Rob Schneider Adam was featured in an uncredited role as a bongo player Suzy that's actually 2003 brought an unlikely co-star Jack Nicholson he plays Adams court-appointed counselor in the comedy anger-management hey I was laughing when I read it I was laughing thinking about Nicholson doing it I thought I could handle my part well enough and just cool Jack Nicholson wanted to do a string of comedies of different types of comedy he did about Schmidt and he's just done something's gotta give and anger management came in the middle and he wanted to work with a major mainstream comedy star like Adam Sandler who had his own style and his own technique and learned from that so you've got Jack Nicholson learning from Adam Sandler a painting of your luck Sandler was in demand but he took a break and married his longtime love model Jackie two-tone in 2003 wedding guests included former co-stars Jack Nicholson Kevin or the rider then 2004 Sadler and Drew Barrymore teamed up for their second romantic comedy which topped the box office charts again said know why 50 first dates is about a man who has to win over his true love thought of a sweet sweet movie and I thought we could put a lot of jokes in there and make it as funny as we could make it and now I'd like to work with a little drew we wanted to not repeat ourselves and and reinvent what we had done already I also stayed true to ourselves because we do really adore and admire each other and it's just it's such a pleasure to go to work every day with someone that you love so much yeah Sandler's next project while still a comedy was a very different sort of comedy I get what it's like when you do your kids being messed with so Lucas it seems like only a mythical juicy horse get the message bangla SHhhh as the title implies deals with a clash of cultures and miscommunication the movie co-stars tale Leone and Mexican actress paz Vega and is directed by James L Brooks when you look at a bulk of Adam's work and these incredible comedies that he can do that and then it seems even as close as I was so effortless how he walks through drama and truthfully we shot it like a drama Jim made it a great comedy and and I admire that that Adam has that talent and that intention Brooks an Oscar winner for terms of endearment route Spanglish was Sandler in mind after a chance meeting I ran into him on the beach one day and just seeing the way he is that I didn't know him that well and just seeing the way he behaves started to feel very right for this guy in this movie because Adam is somebody who lived you know who just always engages you he's just you know he's just he's just a deeply good guy honestly Jim Brooks wrote it that's all I needed he I heard he was writing a script and he wanted me to do it and I told them I talked on the phone even before I read it I said hey I'm in baby oh hey ever gonna stop Spanglish was a risk that didn't pay off at the box office but ultimately may prove to be a savvy career decision for Sandler and it's another example of him working with established Hollywood talent which I think it's a really smart move and he will continue to penetrate that establishment until he is one of the oldest stars in the business Sandler gave his audience what they wanted in the longest yarn a remake of the 1974 prison football calmly the whole scene the scene idea of the movie is the same we put some of our own jokes in here we take some great jokes from the old one in there and now some of the hits are a little uglier I think the project reunites Adam on screen with his Saturday Night Live office made Chris Rock at first he wasn't gonna do it somebody else was gonna do it that wasn't I was gonna do the movie anyway but I wasn't somebody else was gonna play Paul Crewe but then he decided he's gonna play Paul Crewe and that's like the luckiest thing that's happened to me all year we know each other for 20 years already we've been buddies a long time I know him when he was even skinnier if that's possible and it's showing up on the set every day and seeing that kid made me happy looked like he could use some help seasoned Burt Reynolds who played Sandler's role in the original Longest Yard was drafted to play coach Nate Scarboro Adam we come over to say I can't tell you how great it is to look up and see you here because it makes me feel I'm doing it right so you know it's been an incredible wonderful warm fun experience the only reason I felt comfortable being there every day is cuz Burt was there too and he was giving me his blessing at the end of the day some reason all me and my buddies are all hitting 40 this year clique which co-stars Kate Beckinsale she's acting ability I don't call my guys up and go come on baby let's show the world that the Sandman can cry like a baby I think it's a real surprise actually the movie because I think you know it's gonna be funny and it's gonna have laughs and it's gonna have a fart joke and it's gonna have you know whatever and then you'll probably cry at some point during it and you'll be kind of embarrassed and sheepishly so never saw the movie and you're falling another serious role in rain over me looks at the aftermath of September 11th Adam and Don Cheadle play former college roommates who rekindled their friendship after one man loses his family on that day let's go on hey you want to go out you get out go up right now yeah yeah okay go out is he allowed as someone who's been through a tragedy like my guy asked it isn't uncommon for them to want to just talk to nobody and just be alone get the ritual they don't want to be on the street they don't want to see anything they don't want have anyone speak to him that could trigger a memory cell becomes their life like let me just stay away it's just an interesting examination of two friends that have to deal with this tragedy and how they find their need for each other the title reign over me comes from a song by the rock'n'roll group them after an artistic departure from his usual returning will pronounce you chuck and Larry Kevin James co-stars in this story about two straight firemen who pretend to be husband we enjoyed we enjoyed each other's company we became closer and closer as the movie went on Adam received the worst actor Razzie nomination for his work in I now pronounce you chuck and Larry which didn't stop audiences from flying into the manner of underwear 2008 Adam bulked up with muscle and what the plan is really Special Forces soldier he wants to be a hair stylist him you don't mess with the Zohan Israeli guys when I was a kid I always thought they were you know ever they were known for being incredible soldiers so I always got my eye on those guys and then I thought it would be funny to see one of them have a secret dream of becoming a hair stylist and you don't mess with his own when he's told the idea I really laughed and he had the character and the voice and we started talking about it about seven years ago and finally we got up the courage to do it this family comedy features kids in fantasy which seemed in that whole choice for this time I do have a kid a couple of kids now one of them that I've been trying to get taught you know rolling and thinking of her own stuff and but yeah it's much easier to throw a TV on and just say alright watch that and then you start feeling bad I better not get addicted to TV I'm gonna you know try reading try coming up with stories try talking now Jeremiah Skeets was our farmhand looking to make a name for himself in the Old West bedtime stories water boy was Disney but this is the first PG the first one that all the kids can actually come and see then they get to they got to the water boy too but this is a non guilty version of it Adams wife and daughter have cameos in bedtime stories next sample return to a more serious way in the dark comedy funny people written and directed by his friend Judd Apatow me and Apatow have been friends for years and remained even when we wouldn't see each other all the time like we would remain good loyal loving friends and always rooted for each other hey George now why didn't you write me any jokes oh you don't like my movies ISM what you never asked me write jokes here I asked you and I were to write me jokes I read he went crazy on me you did nothing you got a LensCrafters that day is that what it was funny people is about a stand-up comedian he learns he has less than a year Adam returned to his comedy roots for the wool - Utley like every other comedian look for look look to get a laugh and there as quick as possible when something unfortunate comes around our tragic or anything that requires you to to feel I like running - to the joke and yeah that's that's that's I guess it's a defense that every comedian has let's just get let's get to the Laugh and quick and I think that's what my character does when he finds out about what he's going through Sandler's next film the comedy grown-ups a group of high school buddies who reunite after 30 years for a 4th of July weekend Adam Sandler's career certainly has been blessed this remarkably versatile actor has managed to stay on top while remaining true to his roots I don't know what the hell's going on time slipping away and you're getting old and I'm still a loser thank you for watching this Adam Sandler Act issue join us next time for another inside look at your favorite stars of the big screen
