[Music] this is a zero shuffle sequence for peeking the entire deck systematically at least one quarter of the deck at a time it begins like this we're going to cut at half so you need to be able to estimate approximately half of the deck it doesn't have to be perfect but you do want to be fairly close now we cut off the left the bottom to the left the top to the right we're going to be peeking the top two-thirds of the left hand packet so we're going to first lay a short a small bed and then we're going to peek we're in a glimpse all of the indices as we shuffle fairly as soon as we see an ace we would then block off and complete the zero but just for the purposes of demonstrating how we can glimpse the entire deck in just a few shuffles let's ignore the aces for a moment so again starting over we would estimate half cut the bottom to the left the top to the right we would glimpse the top two-thirds of the left hand packet when we get to the top we could zero underneath the top card on the left hand which you'd be cutting that the top packet back on top again we're going to hold a break and then we're going to cut the top half to the left and the bottom to the right and we're going to peak the top two-thirds of this packet now which would leave only a small bit on the bottom of this packet and a small bit on the bottom of this packet that we've not seen so we'll complete that with another peak now we're gluing all the indices on the left then we would complete the zero again under the top card now the only parts we have Glenn's are the bottom parts of each of these packets so the way we're going to see those is we're going to do the sequence again but first we're going to cut about one quarter of the deck to the table and then complete the cut and that will cycle everything up by about one quarter of the deck so if we complete the exact same procedure again cut the bottom to the left take the top two-thirds finish the zero take the top to the left and the bottom to the right keep the top two-thirds of that packet and then complete the zero we have actually peaked the entire deck in a matter of four shuffles so again all together that would look like this [Music] that's about half of the deck cut one quarter repeat and we've actually peaked the entire deck even with a little bit of overlay so it can be done in a sequence of finding cards by using a zero shuffle to maintain full deck order you have an opportunity to peek now in the process of doing the cutting for a four of a kind or some other set of cards what you do is in the action of peeking the first moment that you see a desired card you would then zero to that spot and it will change the order a little bit after each card that you find we didn't see anything there so we'll complete the complete the zero cut the top to the left we'll go again and I see one in there now we're off by about 7 or so cards over here so we're going to complete the zero and then we're going to take the bottom packet where we saw that card now we might be right next to it we might be one at one or two away we'll cut that to the top and take another crack at it now we know it's going to be right near the end now if I see some other aces in there I'm just going to ignore them for right now we have to keep our eye on the ball so our aces at the top we would finish the zero and now we would just present the card in any way that we desire from the top so if we want it to feel like we cut to the center we would maybe do a double undercut holding a break and then cut to that card or hold the break and do some other kind of presentation maybe a one of these hop cuts you know something like that but we would find a way to present that in the center now I've changed the order of the deck up after each time that we locate a card that we want we just start the process over again in spite of anything that we've seen ahead of that so we would just start over again with a cut to the bottom and we'd start peaking complete the zero peak the top part I see a card so then I go for it I cut it to the top by the way you could do something like this as we cut that to the top I might do some false strips which would maintain the order that just gives it a little bit of variety we take another crack at that and again we would ignore anything else that we see we see in there we're after that one target card I know that I am zeroing right over top of it so I could just cut directly to it and then we start over again cutting to the left bottom to the left and we start our peak in I see a card cut it to the top continue along peeking that card until I see it cut to it start over again peeking the top two-thirds of the side complete another another zero taking the top two-thirds of that side I see the card in there complete the zero cut that packet to the top take another shot and I see that I have it at the top so all I need to do is I could actually complete a regular cut there if I can see that card on top all I need to do is find some other kind of presentation and present the final card so the goal is to peek systematically the entire deck if need be if you're coming up short you can't find anything once you get through that whole cycle if you are glimpsing about 2/3 of each pack you will within 4 shuffles see every card of the deck so high likelihood that you're going to run into the card that you're looking for the goal I think is to just make sure that you're johnny on the spot whenever you are glimpsing cards you don't have to zero immediately above the card if you're just one or two away you cut it to the top and it gives you a chance to get it again so we're just we're chefs we're I'm sorry we're peeking through we're looking for that ace I see it in there now I know I'm several cards away and that's okay I just cut it to the top again I know it's going to be near the top though and now now I know that I'm right over top of it so whenever I cut to it I'll be I'll be right where I want to be but anyway to do this in the least number of shuffles possible make sure that you put a variety of cuts in there you probably won't have to cycle through the deck more than once or twice in the whole routine you'll find that it's more like likely that you'll need to cycle through the whole thing on the last one or two cards that you're cutting out because you have a lower probability of running into desired cards but anyway those are some ideas that I've thought about using a zero shuffle I know that this is something that's been looked at by some others in the past and talked about before I've not really seen any of those resources I've only heard about it this is just the way I think about it there may be some overlap with what I'm talking about and what some other people have discovered as well but it's just the way that I look at it using a very simple 0 shuffle nothing more complicated than that and then just some straight legitimate cuts and basic false cuts so 0 shuffle thumb breaks false cuts retain the order of the deck until you find the desired card and then start over same procedure so there you honest ace cutting actual ace cutting from a shuffled deck in use without any kinds of aids such as a crimps or shorts or any other kinds of gimmicks or controlled stock so there you go ace cutting good luck with that [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] a few considerations to take into account when doing something like this first of all it makes for a lousy trick this this procedure is not a very good trick or routine it is more so a phenomenon something that you would do in an opportune moment that people notice not that they are necessarily specifically drawn to to pay attention to which is something that they notice or it's merely just a practice skill there is a sense in which peeking using some kind of a you know reason kind of a hybrid Stevens call and control and certainly the zero Schieffelin there in order to facilitate our blocking this is this you know is probably more of a practice thing that might help you when things don't go well if you need to you know find something or shift gears or something like that in the middle of a trick or routine being able to do this might be helpful or beneficial it might help to release some of the tension knowing that you're able to do this fairly effectively but otherwise just doing this is not really a good trick so we'll just start by saying that if you were going to do this as a trick you would probably use some other kind of means to do it you would you know do Marlo's estimation aces you know to cut two aces or or you would use you know one of the other means that we've talked about the crimps or something like that or other kinds of markings or indications so or controls you know controlling a stock and then cutting to that stock every time so there are other ways that are more effective because they demonstrate less difficulty in accomplishing something that should be extremely difficult and that is you know that that's a good way to create high drama in kriste now doing something that looks difficult is not that interesting necessarily as a good trick because it isn't a trick we're not doing a trick here so that's the first thing it's not that interesting as a trick because it isn't really a trick we're doing some tricky things but what we're doing actually is somewhat mentally difficult now it's not physically difficult to you know land a zero shuffle and keep a break and you know do those kinds of procedures but it is it is somewhat difficult to mentally be you know paying attention and peeking and trying to respond in the moment without any kind of preparation so that's where the difficulty is now in addition to that because what we're doing is difficult because what we're doing is not a verb rather it's supposed to be difficult because what we're doing is not a very good trick in and of itself it's probably okay if things look a little strange so for example that the first thing is the zero shuffle itself normally you want to try to hide the operation of a zero shuffle you want to give it lots of cover and I've talked about that on my channel when talking about the zero and trying to cover up that front edge or the various ways that that can be done in this circumstance though we are not merely mixing cards the phenomenon that is going on is just the opposite what we're doing is we're finding things we're not mixing them it's through the process of shuffling that we're finding but we are we're finding something it's kind of like placing the needle in the haystack rather than than you know trying to find the needle in the haystack right we're in the process of finding it we're not in the process of putting the needle in there and mixing up the hay to lose it when you're shuffling it's mixing the the hay that's that's what that is so normally speaking when you're using a false shuffle like a zero shuffle the idea is to make the shuffle look legitimate it to look like everything is mixed very evenly all the way through the deck and and once you know you want to make sure that everything looks as fair as possible in that riffling and squaring motion we're not concerned with that because that's not what we're doing we're not really mixing the cards and it's not in the phenomenon of the procedure it's not an impact of mixing cards it's the opposite the impact is finding something so if you see you know a shuffle that has a moment that looks like this to the spectator that's no big deal it really doesn't matter I mean the assumption is is that you're trying to find something that you would be blocking off in order to find it so just let that go don't don't think so hard about making your zero nice and neat and clean and covered because the action of shuffling is not is nonsense in the action of finding something and that's what we're actually trying to do okay so first thing you know aside from the fact that this doesn't make a very good trick is that it doesn't need to look really really clean with respect to the normal conventions of doing the fall shuffle okay so don't worry about that making mistakes obviously if you're doing something somewhat for real here you're going to get it wrong sometimes so probably one of the biggest mistakes besides not being able to find anything which can happen and we'll talk about that in a minute here but aside from not finding things as you're peeking and coming up kind of dry one mistake is cutting to the wrong card so more often than not when you get it wrong you'll probably be in a position like this where you think you're holding a break at the desired card and you open to the cut and you show and it's not the right card so there's a few things you can do here because this is supposed to be difficult in a sense it is difficult you have a few options the first one is that you show Cardon you go put it back and hit you carry on and you start over okay so that's option one option two is may end up in the same place but you can give it kind of another try you cut you show the wrong card and then you know reach over with the other hand and see if you have it there if you do the phenomenology of this moment is kind of a gotcha right the spectator is not likely to notice that you made a mistake more so they're likely to assume that that was intended intended okay so it looks you know it looks like this in in the moment cut wrong there it is okay then you throw that one out and put the put the wrong one back and carry on like nothing ever happened so that's that's one you know that's option two now secondary to option two could be something like this wrong wrong in which case you may really just be in the wrong place maybe you saw the wrong thing in fact I'll point out at this moment is another thing to consider in peaking fours looking awful lot like aces when you're focusing on the index I know there's other spots on the card but if you're only peeking the indices you know like we're doing here the moment of the paper flying by when you catch that four that is possible to you know try to block off near there thinking that you saw an ace when in fact your saw four so that's not uncommon so wrong card wrong card I don't think that's really a big deal I think that you can carry on here without worrying too much you just go back to option one ah put it back right or do the same thing but don't make a deal out of it wrong wrong just put them back and go on don't make any kind of acknowledgment that it's wrong okay you know if you wanted to put words in there which is probably best done silent you could say not here not there either you know and move on just don't worry about it if you if you cut to the wrong card just put it back and keep going I guess it's what I'm saying okay so don't give up if the first card is wrong see if the next one is it if you're wrong then then start the procedure over cut the bottom off and get to peaking again okay because the way the way we're doing this is that it's very likely that you're going to catch another one the next time around if there was nothing in that batch probably the next one that you peak because we're systematically going through the deck you're probably going to see one anyway okay so that's most of what I wanted to talk about let me think if there's something else in there coming up dry let's say you've been shuffling and shuffling and shuffling and you just don't see anything a couple options there if you've gone on long enough turn the deck over and start shuffling this way because now you can see everything over here and it actually looks pretty magical shuffling face up and finding something especially if you can get it to just appear there are a couple of routines out there right now that do this kind of thing Carl folds or full vase I guess is how you might say it had one where he did something very similar where he shuffled face-up glimpsing the indices like this but you can you know that that works almost as magical is doing it facedown but it could cut you a break again this is supposed to be difficult so if you're coming up dry turn them over and finish it okay another option if you don't want to do that is just to give it an honest shuffle if you're peeking is coming up dry and you're you know let's say you're down to the last card and you've done you've done this once already where you've been through the hole peeking process and you can't seem to find anything another option is to do this just do a zero for no good reason right into the middle of the deck and that will that will switch up the order quite a bit and then start over again with your peeking so that's one thing another one is to give it an honest shuffle now what I would do if I were you is if you're given on a shuffle probably follow at least the same cover procedures that you were using for your zero again it doesn't matter that your zero doesn't look like an honest shuffle but you don't want to look like you're doing two different things okay so give it a non a shuffle and then just start over again if you can find it and I would definitely say if after doing that you're still coming up dry you're not able to find anything you should probably turn the deck over and catch that last one you know some other way but those are a couple of considerations when doing this maybe the last thing I would say is if you've been shuffling into the deck for a while and you're still coming up dry once you do find something don't take the time to give any strange presentations as soon as you get that thing found either you have it at the break show it don't do double undercuts and add more moves to it or if it ends up on top just dump it off and be done don't you know don't feel like you have to add some more flashy cuts in there you want to try to keep it simple don't do that the moves that are required in order to peak the full deck are sufficient enough to make it look difficult because it really is you don't have to add a bunch of extra things in there the only thing I would you know suggest in there is that occasionally if you have to cut the bottom pack let's say you've zeroed into a location it it may be better to instead of just cutting it to the top to do some full strip cuts occasionally so it looks just a little bit more varied even though you didn't really add an extra move you switched up the way that you're doing something so that it adds a little bit more variety to what you're doing but don't add a bunch of extra moves that aren't necessary you really don't need to do that if you're really kicking along and you're finding everything maybe it's okay to do a couple of those you know herb neighs Falls table cuts or something like that something simple to retain the full deck order and make it look like you're mixing things up those are especially useful when you're trying to show the top card pretend that this is an ace for a moment you know I have it on the top and everything's going well instead of just showing that if I do a you know a false table cut triple cut I can show the top one is if I cut down to it that could be a little bit more interesting than just showing the top card but otherwise again don't don't add a bunch of stuff in there so small vocabulary of a few different kinds of presentations and you know a good a good false strip cut is pretty much all you need to to make this work so a few ideas there a few considerations
