[Music] and I remember dr. Scott teaching about the table of the Lord how something so simple and become so convoluted in the churches throughout church history and still today well I believe that the devil entered in the devil knows how to take the things of God and twist them just a little bit just slightly distorted so those who are not quite following the program wouldn't know any better and he was right it's so abundantly clear just that one subject for example it has been so perverted and so caricatured over hundreds of years that most people have an erroneous idea of what it means to go to the table of the lord and to partake an act that was meant a simple act that was meant as it was first implemented in a home it wasn't some high formal ceremonial act and yet the bulk of the churches today forget about the Catholic Church because it has its own view of what happens to the bread and the wine or the wafer and the wine but even within Protestantism you've got a great divergence of I don't even want to call it crickets or theology I want to call it demonic forces at work to corrupt and pervert the minds of people to implement examining oneself whether they be worthy or not to partake etc etc you get the point which is not in the Bible never was intended that way examine whether you be in the faith and whether you are looking at what you are doing looking at the one who completed it so why wouldn't the devil take other areas and cricketer them as well we've seen the same thing happen with giving how many over the years and unfortunately we can probably name them by name of the ones who have become renowned for their charlatan ways of perverting the gospel for the sake of profit devil knows how to tick something and turn people off on it or lure them away from the source and the same thing is true on the subject that I have been discussing these last few weeks on the Holy Spirit and it's so unfortunate because there is something so crystal clear to me regarding the filling of the Holy Spirit the baptism of the Holy Spirit the term receiving the Holy Spirit there's something so abundantly clear and using the book of Acts first and then on to the epistles we glean some very clear theology the nominations have been made and established based on time talking Pentecostalism I don't want anybody to think for a minute that I put myself above any other individual out there because I don't my problem is I'm in the word and I'm not making the things that I'm reading line up with the things that I've seen the experiences out there being a guest or guest speaker in another church being present well people make very strange statements or the songs that they sing regarding their understanding of the person of the Holy Spirit well I freely confess to you that you know I didn't have perfect clarity when I started out it was a confusing subject for me but we can glean as much as we will dig into the Word of God to get rid of some of the confusion that has been brought into the church now it seems so simple to me and I'm just gonna do some reading that it seems once we put these things in order you begin to see exactly why this is the subject that needs to be he talked about and taught on because as I said Pentecost in the Old Testament Pentecost was the feast of harvest the harvest feast or the harvest festival the book of Acts those weeks leading up to the day of Pentecost the harvest festival was no longer a harvest festival as the Old Testament recorded where people brought their goods there things that they had grown produced to whatever this was the harvest of souls and this is why and I'm gonna cover some familiar territory but acts 2 and if you have you do not have this written in your Bible I strongly suggest you write it somewhere and I strongly suggest this is the type of study where I tell you go check me out I really dislike when people form opinions and they are not willing to look for themselves in other words all put the information out there and believe you me I will not be offended not one bit somebody says I checked you out I encourage you that's how you confirm that's how you get confidence and what I'm teaching oh you can say well I trust you pastor I know you wouldn't do anything I'm I've asked you over the years I've never been a time when I said you know I don't want you to look I said get the tools and if you are even just a beginner just just a beginner with the Strong's Concordance just a beginner or if you have great language skills doesn't matter and I I really do I give thanks to G Campbell Morgan for pointing this out but again hardhead that I am over the years I've done my own checking there was a time early on when I took certain things that I had heard over the years and I just took them as that's that and I because of my language skills encountered places where I could not make the that's that agree with what my language skills had shown so I learnt the lesson the hard way your own research which is what I've done acts 2 begins with and when the day of Pentecost was fully come the Greek soon Blair was Trump Larousse Tai Chi Anto and when and this word for was fully calm in the Greek extremely important see this is why language crystallizes these concepts this word which is a compound is a verb in the infinitive and I'll talk about that in a minute present passive and dative and the most key thing here is present which means something that happened but is ongoing it is not finished and the infinitive tells us there is no set limit on the number we'll call it the number of people who might participate or the number of souls that might be saved or the number and the harvest or the number of celebrations of this harvest festival the infinitive basically removes the need to put in a set and determined quantity of anything because it's not finished so this is why G Campbell Morgan translated began to be fulfilled when the day of Pentecost began to be fulfilled because it was indeed the day of Pentecost that day but it marked the beginning of a new epoch a new way a new approach in the new dispensation of this New Testament harvest of souls the old dispensation had come to a close this is the new dispensation that begun on that day and has not yet been completed which is why the infinitive is there it tells you it still and present still ongoing now just think about this for a minute we often refer to Pentecost the day of Pentecost and we associated immediately with the outpouring of the Spirit but again I make the connection jesus said go and tarry there in Jerusalem all you got to do is go back just a little bit because they after they see Jesus ascend they go and wait just as Jesus had told them to what were his words he said you shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you but he said before that wait for the promise of the Father which he have heard of me and we know that that promise was declared in a diversity of places but most clearly in John with the most detail in John's Gospel but you shall be John truly baptized with water you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence now they went fifty days being in the Upper Room men and women they chose Lots to replace Judas a lot fell on Matthias he was numbered with the rest of them and the women that were in the Upper Room and when the day that day occurred fifty days after they saw Jesus we have the first fruits of what Jesus had declared to them and it's really important to separate some things that happen here they were all in one Accord in one place now it says suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting hold that thought to put things together properly what did Jesus say to Nicodemus after he said Marvel not that I said unto you you must be born again that is from above and by the way that is also a passive one receives the wind bloweth where it listeth thou hearest the sound thereof but thou canst not tell whence it cometh and whither it goeth so is every one that is born of the Spirit now not to confuse the event of the day of Pentecost with what Jesus is talking about but just imagine when you're out on the street and the wind picks up you can hear the wind in the trees you can't see unless it's a real gusting wind that's blowing your hair or your umbrella or something you can't see where the wind is coming from but you can hear and you can see the activity the wind is moving things just as I'm speaking to you and air is going through my body along with blood that's pumping oxygen right I can't see can you see the air coming out of my mouth I can't so kind of interesting if you read about this sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind it is exactly the same principle Jesus describes as he is in fact explaining about the method of salvation from above one can cannot see but they heard as just as Jesus says here the wind bloweth where it listeth thou hearest the sound thereof you can hear the sound but you can't tell where it's coming from so the description here and ax maybe a little bit more dramatic but I want it I don't want to go into but people have been indulged in what I call great mysticism or ecstatic ideology here I want you to just simply think of this day as a day where as its said the promise of the Father is being fulfilled this promise of the father that was declared long long time hundreds of years before this book is written by the prophets specifically the one that Peter will mention Joel but the important thing is when we talk about pictorial themes this is not something new we're not talking about something that this is a new thing when you talk about I just described the wind out of John and it says and it filled all the house where they were sitting now just indulge me to just kind of take baby steps here the sound from heaven and suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind and it filled the entire house where they were sitting your King James says and there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire the Greek kind of an interesting approach here divided tongues as of fire you know just stop and think about pictures unfolded we pretend him super spiritual eyes this event over the top but tell me what's the difference between appeared unto them like cloven tongues like as a fire sat upon each other tell me what the difference between this imagery and for example the imagery of Isaiah and a cold being touched to the mouth purifying there's that still fire purifying of the mouth or setting apart tell me why do we make this something so over-the-top and yet we read about Isaiah who it says you saw the Lord High and lifted up tell me which is more mind-blowing to you the Prophet saying that he saw the Lord High and lifted up or the imagery that's being described here don't answer they were all filled with the Holy Ghost you want to put something in your Bible coulda note about just around if you want to circle the word they were all filled with the Holy Ghost because that is a verb in the indicative which means it's a fact I worst an event in the past but something that is really important here this is passive they were filled now let me ask you what was the catalyst for this to happen well you've gotta go back a little bit because there's a whole chapter before the opening says how all that Jesus began both to do and to teach until the day in which he was taken up after that he through the Holy Ghost had given Commandments under the apostles whom he had chosen to him also he showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs being seen of them forty days and speaking of them the things pertaining to the kingdom of God being assembled together with them commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the Father which saith he you have heard of me John truly baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence let me go to I have two revised and interlinear sitting beside me back to the King James when they therefore were come together they asked of him saying Lord without this time restore again the kingdom to Israel he said unto them it is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the father hath put in his own power but you shall receive power different word two different words for power you shall receive power Dunamis after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria and to the uttermost parts of the earth did he say but ye shall receive Dunamis power after the Holy Ghost has come upon you to spiritually one-up the rest of the crowd there was a purpose there he shall be witnesses unto me when he had spoken these things while they beheld he was taken up and a cloud received received him out of their sight and you keep reading then return they unto Jerusalem from the mount all of it which is from Jerusalem a Sabbath day journey we go to the revise now when they had entered the city they went to the room upstairs where they were staying Peter John James Andrew Philip Thomas Bartholomew Matthew James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the zealot Judas the son of James all these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer together with certain women including Mary the mother of Jesus as well as his brothers in those days Peter stood up among the believers together the crowd numbered about 120 persons and said friends the scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus for he was numbered among and was allotted his share in this ministry now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness and falling headlong he burst open in the middle of in the middle and all his bowels gushed out this became known to all residents of Jerusalem so that the field was called in their language health care Dhamma or house Adama that is field of blood for it is written in the Book of Psalms let his homestead become desolate and let there be no more to live in it and let another take his position of overseer some one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us beginning from the baptism of John and to the day that he was taken up from us one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection so they proposed to Joseph called barsabbas who was also known as Justus and Matthias then they prayed and said Lord you know everyone's hearts show us which one of these do you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and Apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go his own to his own place and they cast lots for them the lot fell on Matthias he was added to the eleven no chapter and verse in the original it's a letter when the day of Pentecost just kind of just goes straight on so the thing I want to point out here and there's something that is truly probably as I said grossly overlooked by those people trying to make the most important thing about the day of Pentecost be that these people were filled with the spirit and that they spoke with tongues no sorry it's not the most important thing the most important thing here starts with the fact that Jesus told them you go wait until you receive power obedience they obeyed the Lord and just to show you that I'm not can kind of read and follow and several chapters later so in the fifth chapter and I'll go back to the second chapter because I'm not done but in the fifth chapter that just dress my point in the fifth chapter beginning at verse 29 because they were they were forbidden to speak about Jesus in the name of Jesus then Peter and the other apostles answered and said we ought to obey God rather than men the god of Our Fathers raised up Jesus whom you slew and hanged on a tree him asked God exalted with his right hand to be a prince and Savior for to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins we are his witness witnesses of these things and so is also the Holy Ghost whom God hath given to them that obey Him this is always overlooked you know people want to play with ideas the right books and there have been hundreds of books written on how to but if you're not willing to read I was telling somebody earlier today now the problem with a lot of people who they may read the Bible but do you take the time to process what you've read to meditate on it and ask yourself this is between you and God how Lord does this apply in my life how is this even put into action in my life how does this apply to me and I hate to ask those questions and say you ask them of yourself but I do that because my mind says am I just reading an account of something or is there something that I'm to glean and I'm guaranteed there's something that I'm to glean beyond just mere reading and the only way that that can be gleaned is to go back and to reread and to not get so glib that you all yeah I've read this passage I you know all right the other dreaded word which I think dr. Scott would probably roll over in his grave to hear people say well dr. Scott said after Scott was the first person to say that if you are making an argument for something that you presented facts or ideas or concepts that he had not considered be one of the first individuals to while you still pressing for your argument he would have already shifted gears and he's already listening that's what smart people do stupid people form opinions and get stuck in them and never move out of them because that's that that's the final word just to prove the point of his genius it's the mark of any person who's truly smart stupid people get stuck in their own ignorance thinking that they are smart 50 years of ministry the man had behind him 50 30 here 20 before don't count the fact that he was raised a preacher's kid I don't know that that's a good education because while your kid you're trying so hard to get out of the grips of what you're in and he publicly said that but my point is if you look back at the man's ministry there are those solid points she never never varied from he never straight from but there are definitely developments in his understanding and in his theology that progress over the course of time and anyone who is honest and not trying to be a revisionist will recognize that just as it's true with me and it's true with you you started off in one place and one mindset maybe you grew up in a certain denomination or background and there is what genre right Follette called progressive revelation and as you are able to take more like Jesus say his disciples you're not evil to receive all that I have to say you can't handle it alright now you start off as a babe all you see is the wonderful fact that you've been saved by the power of Christ his shed blood on the cross that he died for you it's that very beautiful passage that were initiated if you will to condition our minds that perhaps this is all we need to know John 3:16 God so loved the world he gave His only begotten Son fill in the rest but as you grow in grace and as you grow in wisdom and understanding you can say wow I started there and it was like like a child just like jesus said like a child childlike faith but now I'm maturing and I desire more questions and I have need of stronger food which is why we often talk about meat versus milk there's nothing wrong with milk but you need strong food to be able to grow the body so we all have this progression but if you start out then the starting point is on this subject for example that the evidence of these people being saved as some have said the evidence of their salvation was the fact that they spoke in tongues you have missed about 85% if not maybe even 90% of what's underneath it all and more importantly and not the evidence by the way because we'll talk about that evidence goes in many directions in the book of Acts not just the glossolalia but in each instance for the we'll call it the initial outpouring this is the Holy Spirit person being introduced we'll call it properly for the first time and how would they know that this event happened if it was not an event how would they know how would they know that something has actually occurred remember they lived in the realm of when I use the term supernatural not not meaning more natural in fact that's what it means but they lived in the realm of seeing many miracles so caring for 50 days in the upper room until you be endued with power from on high how would they know that they've been in dude when they had been witnessed to so many wonderful miracles and signs from the mouth in the hands the person of Christ how would they know God is not stupid this event was like opening a door and making sure that from think about who's there from the doubting Thomas who was present on on that day in the Upper Room other we don't we don't hear about Thomas standing up and speaking doubting Thomas think about the people that were present on that day and the one who back there at Caesarea Philippi stood up and said thou art the Christ the same one this same one will be the one who will do the bulk of the talking so how would they know that something has happened they needed you may say whoa whoa whoa whoa you know they needed a sign and to be extra sure about this thing you see maybe it wasn't clear the first and their whole mindset was that only those of the circumcision would be part of this group that followed Jesus so to make double sure now that were clear we're perfectly clear that this event the day of pentecost event is what god spoke of and promised the same thing will be in like manner there were not there wasn't a mighty rushing wind and there wasn't tongues of fire recorded but the same event in its essence will occur to the house of Cornelius to mark a turning point of clarity for Peter particularly he's the one that had the vision that the Gentiles would it be included and how would they know what would be the proof that the Gentiles had received just the days just as they had received except the same thing it occurred now this is why I tell you just you know indulge me to kind of go real slow because as you can you take the time to slow down and not rush through this you realize that there's a lot of things here that God is laying out we just we can miss them see Peters sermon Peters sermon is not being delivered in an unknown tongue right standing up with the eleven lifted up his voice and said unto them the ones that were there you're gonna say use these men are these men are drunk no these men are not drunk as you say standing up with the eleven lifted up his voice as clear as day now reading English of course what slightly ridiculous this my my whole picture here falls apart because I'm reading English with you but imagine in the tongue that was spoken in that time he's speaking to them in that tongue that is analogous to me speaking to you in English right now we all understand what I'm saying now separate a little bit between what has happened here from the first verse second chapter until the 13th verse after this that they were filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance and you stopped there that's verse four we're gonna look at in a minute we're gonna look at this Greek word to speak which is different than other words to speak and it says as the Spirit gave them utterance super important and they were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews devout men out of every nation under heaven now when this was noised abroad the multitude came together and were confounded at this sound the Greek reads general Menace they and having happened this Faunus the sound after the sound had happened assembled the multitude and it was confused because I'll go back to the King James that they heard every man speaking in his own language this event obviously is different than Peters sermon they were all amazed there's gonna it's gonna point to one thing though and we need to not lose track of the one thing they were all amazed and marveled saying to one another behold or not all these which speak galilaeans how hear how hear we every man in our own language when we were born parth in Ian's Medes Elamites dwellers in Mesopotamia Judea Cappadocia Pontus Asia Phrygia Pamphylia Egypt in parts of Libya about Cyrene and strangers of Rome Jews and proselytes Crete's and Arabians and here's the most important part of this whole passage do we hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God do you know that most people focus on the first few verses in that passage but first 11 we hear them speaking in other tongues the Meghalaya to seal the mighty the mightiness wonderful works is OK the mighty you get you hear mega mega Leah it's an adjective speaking about the greatness of God the great things or the greatness of God that's what they heard put a note there somewhere they didn't hear their own language but some other message what they heard was about the greatness of God again everything is going to point back to drawing people's attention remember what Jesus said back there in John when the Spirit is come he shall speak of me he shall glorify me now I just want you to just pause on this for a second because as I said it's so easy to race right by this this first event that caused such a tumult it says we do hear them speak in our tongues every man that is named their heard in his own language in his own ear about the wonderful greatness of God anything freaky about that I don't think so you know it's like if you take the time to really think about this God was using the megaphone in that we'll call it the megaphone of all of these diverse people 120 gathered there maybe they were all talking at the same time who knows if they were given and will talk about this may not get to it tonight but we'll talk about this word about how the spirit was giving them the ability to speak to them though this particular word that is used in the Greek versus the regular word that's used for to speak but in any event when people say tongues immediately although this word in the Greek can be understood as unintelligible they all understood the wonderful works of God and that's what I want to make I wanna strike this home as God is not the author of confusion he doesn't bring people to be unless there's a lack of understanding for which some of these said they were amazed some were in doubt some said these are they're full of new wine they're drunk and listen to what Peter's response is now I want I really ask you to read this with fresh eyes putting in your mind you already know what type of individual Peter was already thou art the Christ very good Peter Simon Peter flesh and blood hath not revealed this thing to you but two seconds later he says when he says he must go and suffer all know be it far from the Lord that that ain't gonna happen yeah no no we're not gonna let that happen you're not gonna go die you know I can't go suffered so much for that so that might have been the greatest utterance second after that might be him walking on water for the brief amount of time that he did and then crying out lord save me that's the second best thing you said but Peter if you read the account in the gospels is not the most it's not the sharpest tool in the shed nor is he the most eloquent and yet when he stands up to speak his thoughts are organized his speech is organized and as crystal clear as you can declare something this is the power for service Peter standing up with the eleven lifted up his voice said unto them he men have G day and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem be this known unto you and hearken unto my words again this word declared to speak and to declare I have to come back to that be it known unto you and give ear hearken unto my words arrematei not logos these are not drunken as you suppose seeing that is but the third hour the day but this is that which was spoken by the Prophet Joel just again let's slow this down to come to pass in the last days saith god I will pour out of my spirit he's quoting Joel 2:28 pour out of my spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy your young men shall see visions your old men shall dream dreams and on my servants on my hand means they will pour out in those days of my spirit and they shall prophesy stop right there we know the Hebrew word for prophesied Navi I have the Strongs on my lap that's everything find the word here so beginning with Strong's 50:12 from the Hebrew neva prophesy speak or sing by inspiration in prediction or simple discourse the prophecy or prophesying and if you keep going NABBA prophesy and then you've got the plural the prophets and so forth what is important is some definition and this Strong's is we'll call it the very starting point of digging but what is important here is naba to speak or sing by inspiration most people immediate when they think prophecy they think prediction of the future now there were prophets that foretold repent or and this is gonna happen unto you and your people will be carried away and but that always came with the word the Lord came to so-and-so and they became the conduit to carry out and bring forth the word of the Lord if it was a future prediction if it was the word of the Lord coming to that individual speak unto the children of Israel speak unto these people here go over there go and say this go to these people or by simple discourse Moses was called a prophet did Moses prophesy but by the definition of naba simple discourse now you have to just you have to indulge me to try and convey why when people start to engage in this interpretation and begin to make it something crazy remember I talked about say you're gonna fill up a pitcher you open the tap and you put water and you let the water run and I was trying to give the analogy of this is what it means to be filled with the Spirit of God don't think that the water that runs over the side is wasted what runs over the side is what essentially is what Jesus talked about the bubbling up of the Living Waters that would proceed out of one's belly and out of one's mouth the things that in other words one one is filled up with the spirit this is what comes out it is not the things of a man or the wisdom of men but it is the things of God whether it's the Word of God as in the Rhema the things that we we have taken into ourselves by the spirit and prophesying is the same way but in the New Testament I remember dr. Scott describing it as a bubbling forth of God's Word but I want you to think of it this way if these people will were filled with the spirit think of a vessel that has been filled to the brim and is overflowing and it is the overflow that is now flowing out and being expressed to the people and that's probably you know I'm sorry any any pictorial sense is going to even Teeter on blasphemy but I'm trying to give an idea that after this event which people tend to camp out on they spoke with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance and they don't really pay attention to Peters sermon because here is for the first time something being laid out so clear and he doesn't say let try and explain to you that Jesus said we would receive this promise and he says know something that Yolanda all understand because the bulk of these were there for the feast of Pentecost bringing their harvest probably also paying taxes by the way but he says something that they would all know this is that which was spoken of by the Prophet Joel and he goes on to say I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh I ask you a question what a brilliant sorry you might say welcome I don't know how else to call this what a brilliant selection I don't think that Peters just on his own in in in the flesh in the character that we have known would have been able to just make a beeline to the exact place to say this is that and yet here mister bigmouth cut straight to the chase you're not drunk this is the fulfillment of what was spoken of by the Prophet Joel and he goes on to say I will show wonders in heaven above and continue on not pick up in my revised gonna take a break soon but I was he gotta you gotta do what you got to do here speaking of the last day when he says before that great and notable day of the Lord come speaking of the last day verse 21 it shall come to pass and everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved you that are Israelites listen to what I have to say Jesus of Nazareth a man attested to you by God with deeds of power among you by miracles which is Dunamis 1411 Dunamis and wonders and sign Dunamis I Kai Thoreau see wonders and signs Samoyeds you remember I said John loves that word he used it so much in his writing signs that God did through him among you as you yourselves know this man handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law but God raised him up having freed him from death because it was impossible for him to be held in its power for David says concerning him I saw the Lord always before me he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken therefore my heart was glad my tongue rejoiced moreover my flesh will live in hope for you will not abandon my soul to Hades or let your Holy One experience corruption you have made known to me the ways of life you will make me fall with gladness with your presence fellow Israelites I may say to you confidently that our ancestor David that he both died and was buried and his tomb is with us to this day since he was a prophet he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that would put one of his descendants on the throne now stop right there David is a prophet by the words of Peter it's time to kind of get rid of all the woowoo stuff here because we read about David and David as as flesh and blood as you can get king of Israel and yet as earthy and as earthly and as fleshy as you can find in the Bible called a prophet for seeing this David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah saying he was not abandoned to Hades nor did his flesh experience corruption this Jesus God raised up and all of that we are witnesses of being therefore exalted at the right hand of God having received from the father the promise of the Holy Spirit he has poured out this that you both see and hear therefore being at the right hand of God exalted and having received of the father the promise of the Holy Ghost he hath shed forth this which ye now see and here Peter doesn't say I'm so great I spent time with the Lord I'm so great I'm so knowledgeable I'm so whatever he says this is this is what you're hearing and seeing right now you read between the lines again there's glory to God Peter is not taking any part of this insane good preaching huh keep breathing for David did not ascend into the heavens but he himself says the Lord said to my lord sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool therefore let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah this Jesus whom you crucified now when they heard this they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles brothers what should we do they were pricked in their heart said to Peter and the rest of the Apostles men and brethren what should we do and I want you to read this very very carefully because doctrines have been made erroneously out of this one verse Peter said unto them repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost and I say the reason why I say heirs have an entire denomination has been founded upon this one verse who baptized and they are Jesus only people that's all there's no father there is no Holy Ghost there's only Jesus in fact I remember encountering a group of these that had been unfortunately indoctrinated by some poor who could barely read English sorry it may read as you and I read it to be baptized in the name of Jesus but believe you me Peter was there when Christ gave the Great Commission so whether it is by omission and is assumed Christ's words to the disciples you will baptize in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit but an entire denomination has been formed on us but what I want you to see is that these people who heard this sermon coming out of the mouth of Peter pricked in their heart and asked what should they do Peter says repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost that is verse 38 and here I want to make sure that you just put somewhere in your margin the gift durian not carries Motta durian the gift of the Holy Spirit I want to ask you a question and perhaps it's not recorded for us but I don't read anywhere these men only asked what shall we do what do we do now Wow I can't believe we just heard what we heard what are you supposed to do now repent and be baptized every one of you and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit for the promise is unto you and to your children and all that are afar off even as many as the Lord our God shall call and with many other words did he testify and exhort saying save yourselves from this untoward generation then they that gladly received his word were baptized the same day they were added unto them about 3,000 Souls they continued steadfastly in the Apostles doctrine and fellowship in the breaking of bread and in prayers I'm going to ask you a question which is super important it started with 120 Peter stands up and he preaches this sermon and it closes right here with about 3,000 souls were added all the people did they asked what should we do repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost do you read anywhere just right here where I have stopped do you read anywhere thus far where it says you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost and speak in tongues are you reading it like that does your Bible read like that are we reading the same Bible because if you have a different version let me know no okay all righty because all it says here is they had a response just as the disciples obeyed the words of Christ and went to tarry these had a response to the preaching and world-beating to that response to ask what should we do and they're told repent and be baptized and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost but I do not read of this the 3,000 that were added I don't read that there's anything strange about these folks fear came upon every soul many wonders and signs were done by the apostles and all that believed were together and had all things in common there's your first picture of the Koinonia community sold their possessions and goods and parted them to all men as every man had need and they continuing daily with one Accord in the temple and breaking bread from house to house did eat their meat with gladness and with thing was a part praising God and having favor with all the people and the Lord added to the church daily such as should be safe do you read anywhere that the three thousand had the same initial experience as the hundred and twenty do you yes or no that's right but when you read it in a sloppy fashion people would have you convinced now I'm gonna say this to you pretty important omission if three thousand of these spoke with other tongues pretty important omission or maybe it wasn't considered that important it just says they shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost well that thought for a minute you keep reading and we have Peter and John going into the temple and the beggar who is sitting by the gate beautiful asking for alms and Peter's response to that one silver and gold have I none but such as I have I give thee in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk in took him by the right hand lifted him up immediately his feet and his ankle bones received strength leaping up stood up walked entered with them into the temple walking leaping and praising God okay now the cool religious leaders are gonna come and call them out on this deed and what is so interesting is that if you read this account all they did was heal this man and people are wandering by what power did they do this and again here comes more preaching out of the mouth of the same one who before he is sermon and before standing up and talking about casting Lots it doesn't seem like he had that much eloquence here's another very eloquent straight to the point clarity organized thoughts when I say God gave this gift for a purpose Pentecost is the feast of harvest this became the harvest of souls and the equipment given to be able to communicate the things of God there'll be other points that will be important prayer language maybe one of them organize thought now as all of what Peter says here he's brought before the religious leaders high priests and others and they asked him by what power by what name have you done this speaking of healing the man then Peter filled with the Holy Ghost said unto them ye rulers of the people and elders of Israel if we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man but by what means he has made whole be it known unto you and here we go again and all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth whom you crucified whom God raised from the dead even by him doth this man stand here before you whole Peter taking an ounce of credit thus far no glory to God this is the stone which was set at nought of you builders which has become the head of the corner neither is there salvation in any other for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men they marveled like I circled these two words in my Bible because I like these two greek words i grommet oi the a in front puts it in Reverse a grommet or would be someone who is grammar or well versed and ignorant either your thigh y'all know what that means right that's what it said unlearned and ignorant when they saw this they marveled this is why I was having a conversation with some of the other day and we were discussing what manner of people God will choose I pick anybody he likes and maybe like Peter and John unlearned and ignorant there's even more glory for God it's even more glorious this person who is well educated you might vacillate a little bit on whether it's their good education that gives them this ability to be this precise and clear and eloquent someone was just a plain idiot as the Greek says about Peter and John they're marveled they took knowledge of them that they had been with Jesus and beholding the man which was healed standing with them they could say nothing against it the proof is in the pudding right there when they've commanded them to go a side of the council they conferred amongst himself saying what shall we do to these men for that indeed a notable miracle had been done by them is manifest all them that dwell in Jerusalem we cannot deny it think of how corrupt this is but if that if it spread no further among the people let us straightly threaten them that they speak henceforth to no man in this name they called them commanded them to not speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus Peter and John answered and said unto them and here we have this which I was trying to reference earlier whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God judge ye for we cannot but Speak the things which we have seen and heard what did Christ say he shall be witnesses of me anything sound crazy thus far because thus far just sounds like men who were exposed to Jesus Christ and doing exactly what he said they would do you shall be wait in Jerusalem until you be endued with power and a high because after that time you be witnesses of me starting first here at Jerusalem and then to the other most far-flung corners of the earth we cannot but Speak the things which we have seen and heard so when they had further threatened them they let them go finding nothing how they might punish them because of the people for all men glorified God for that which was done the man was about 40 years old on whom this miracle of healing was showed and that's an important detail by the way you know I don't sometimes I think we read past these little things but to be a witness to be someone who will be taken legitimately they put premiums on ages how old you could be to be a priest or the age of a witness if you ever called into a courtroom the things that they would take as true versus someone who was either too old and maybe too frail or too young and too juvenile however you want to put that all these little details are put there for a purpose now as I said everything is very organized and you begin to look at the courage of just of the man that we know as I said from the Gospel accounts Peter who that's um maybe some you know I won't deny you but look how that turned out right but here is a different individual full of courage because they will indeed come and arrest and put them in prison and again it is repeated over and over again should we obey God rather than man you keep reading and you have the record of after in the sixth chapter the close of the event where they chose more individuals and verse seven says the Word of God increased the number of disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith and then starts the Chronicle if you will of Stephen and then we have Stephen speaking and again his record his speech everything that he is saying which is organized there's nothing he's not spouting off and trying to impress the people with an unknown language he's communicating to the people and making his point in a tongue which they obviously understood because it cost him his life just put to death right there stoned and of course we have the beginning of the encounter with Saul the Apostle Paul and then I want you to go and read with me in the eighth chapter because this is about where the gospel is now beginning to be spread outside of the epicenter of where they were there for thee that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word and selling vitamins that was added by the translators I'm sure then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ unto them and the people with one Accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake hearing and seeing the miracles which he did for unclean spirits crying with a loud voice came out of many that were possessed with them and many taken with palsies that were lame were healed and there was great joy in that city there was a certain man called Simon which before time in the same city used sorcery bewitched the people of Samaria giving out that himself was some great one to whom they all gave heed from the least to the greatest saying this man is a great power of God it's the great power of God and to him they had regard because of the long time he had bewitched them with sorceries but when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ they were baptized both men and women then Simon himself believed also this is a very important record because it says he believed also I'm just reading King James we all know what the word believe is truly so just read it just like it is right now then Simon himself believed also and when he was baptized continued with Philip and one be holding the miracles and signs which were done now Simon believed and he was baptized does that mean that he was now a good guy there's all these subtle things that are recorded now when the Apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the Word of God they sent to them Peter and John who when they were come down prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Ghost for as yet he was fallen upon none of them only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus this is where the seven second definite work of grace people say you see there were two separate acts and the second act is the one that definitely seals the deal hold that thought for a minute then they lead their hands on them and they received the Holy Ghost and when Simon saw that through the laying on of the Apostles hands the Holy Ghost was given he offered them money saying give me also this power that on whomsoever I lay hands he may receive the Holy Ghost but Peter said unto Him thy money perish with thee because thou has thought the gift Dorion of God may be purchased with money now I ask you thus far let me actually I'll finish reading because it's important to finish the whole sum here verse 21 that that's how that thou hast neither part nor a lot in this matter for the heart is not right in the sight of God repent therefore in this thy wickedness and pray God if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee for I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity then answered Simon said pray to the Lord for me that none of these things which she have spoken come upon me and they when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord returned to Jerusalem and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans now ask you one thing Simon believed at pewter I'm sorry it says Simon believed and he was baptized but it also says that he thought that he could buy the gift these that came and says they prayed because as of yet the Holy Ghost was not fallen upon them they won't be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus as I said this has prompted people to say somehow that there are two separate works and as I said this is definition at least in part of the second definite work of grace people who say well see the the first part is believing in the second part is this event that happens but in either event I ask a question of you is it recorded here at all that these upon whom the Holy Ghost had fallen or that they had received does it record anywhere that these who receive does it record of them speaking in tongues yes or no that's what I said now that may have happened but it's not recorded if this was the emphasis each time that this happened this would be the undercurrent being record nutz recorded in diverse places I believe for a purpose you've got Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch he's reading Isaiah and he doesn't understand and you know the passage where he says how can I know what's how do how can I understand this except a man explained it to me and he goes on philip ii explained to him what it means and he began to preach of the scriptures he began to preach to him about Jesus and he says to him you know here's water what hinders me from being baptized he says if you believe with all thine heart that thou mayest and he answered and said I believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God he commanded the chariot to stand still they went down both into the water both Philip and the eunuch and he baptized him and when they were come out of the water the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip that the eunuch saw him no more and he went on his way rejoicing does it record anything more of any type of experience about this eunuch no just he was baptized here that's it and the emphasis here is that the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip we're not we don't really care about what happened the eunuch right I'm trying to make a point if you read carefully you began to see that just a careful reading and sorting this out begins to make clear why there's so much confusion not every event records the same thing take a look at the record in chapter 9 of Paul and if you want me to continue you better get on the telephone [Music] [Music]
