hey everybody I'm Rick Beato on today's episode we're gonna discuss one of my favorite bands of all time ac/dc now I have never discussed them really on here I did one video where I did the solo two back and black but I don't discuss them because I can't play any of their music on here otherwise the videos get blocked so what I've done is I have created tracks from scratch to discuss what makes ac/dc so cool the first tune I'm going to talk about is back in black so let's create the rhythm track first [Music] like [Music] okay I'm ready for a tank okay first we're gonna track the guitars now I know I'm playing a Les Paul I actually don't have my SG here my brother has my SG so I'm gonna have to make do but I'll make it sound close enough so here we go so guitars I'm gonna record with my old JCM 2000 from I think 1999 through my hundred watt cabinet with greenbacks in it I think this is going to get a great ac/dc style sound let's check it out so the first rent starts with a lot of down beats and then then that goes to rest he goes to an upbeat there and then at the end of the phrase the climbing ref has a three figure which propels it into the next phrase didn't you did you - did you - did your DJ listen then you're back to the straight field let's check out the chorus next first we have to play it [Applause] [Music] [Music] to talk about this chorus I want to bring in an old friend of mine JJ Zeller he's a drummer that I used to play with years and years ago he lives in Philadelphia and yeah I have a video related to drums I was called up JJ and s a do check this out what do you think about this so I have JJ here with me so JJ let's talk about back in black about this chorus figure yeah it was interesting because you were pointing out the guitar rhythms have a lot of upbeat emphases to them but the drums are really just straight quarter notes almost all the time in one sense it's simple what they're doing but it's it's very cool because it created such a signature sound and feel for them you talked about the four against three feel I want you to talk about that for a second what's interesting about back in black is that the drums are staying on the quarter note you know one two three and four but the you know the guitar riff starts the pattern on the and of one but then it's subdividing the sixteenth notes every third sixteenth note you're getting the accent so it's like one and two E and three E and ah then he then he also plays another quick little lick on the end of four a which sets him up for the next pattern the next the next bar basically because it's like one two three four three a four on all those upbeats create a rhythmic dissonance this part Rhett's as soon as you hear it it drives you so yeah it's very hip how they did that how they mastered that and just made it their own thing so another great thing in the chorus of back in black is the use of a pedal tone in the bass they do this all the time this is a great example and it creates a lot of tension so you've got instead of rest you have their beat so as you get these chords [Music] then he goes to the [Music] the bass actually starts the chorus with the drum so it's so its feet then the guitar enters on the upbeat listen then pedal on a now goes together with a guitars pedal [Music] it also uses the same thing right here we go [Music] decadent edited a death detective da boom bah that triplet trip and attended oh but that identity down highway to hell is another great example of this upbeat against down beat up beating the guitars against down beating the drums let's check it out every guitar riff that he's playing doesn't it doesn't start on the downbeat or anything like that everyone starts on the upbeat so it's one two three four one bad bad on it so everyone is starting on an upbeat which again it's subtle it's simple but it's it's just it's just really cool [Music] [Music] might have just noticed that the bass and the chorus here is also playing a pedal just like back in black except it's on a this time and it has it upbeat accent down down da da da down down down up down so it's up down so the kick drum is hitting there on one with the guitars and bass doing the upbeat accent but the pedal tone on there let's check it out a and then D over a pedal another one down down upbeat accent like their except the drums actually play with it because it's at the end of the phrase [Music] so JJ this also fits that same four against three pattern you want to talk about that so a classic kind of four over three feel when it starts on beat one one two three four that got that got out at at that but for Enda yeah that one's kind of interesting because the drums are playing more at like it's not really double time but the way the pattern is against it it's actually on the second bar then add in it then that that bad add up out pop badda-badda so this part of the verse and shoot to thrill also has the same type of pedal tone as back in black and highway to hell so it's going so it's got that G over a to D over a it creates that same kind of excitement as in the other two songs [Applause] [Music] once again this chorus has these up beats against the down beats in the drum check it out [Applause] [Music] down up so it's up-down so the guitar hits on the up and the kick hits in the down and the bass is pedaling right through it that up-down is what propels the groove and all of these ac/dc saws you don't really even realize that that downbeats happening right after the ear is is keying in on the high frequency information the guitars [Applause] [Music] all of these things as syncopated guitars against the straight drums the pedal points in the bass all of these things make ac/dc and and we haven't even talked about the vocals yet make ac/dc one of the most original bands in rock and roll that's all for now please subscribe here to my everything music YouTube channel if you're interested in the Beato book go to my website at wwlp.com and if you want to support the channel even more you should check out the Beato club you can find information about it on my website as well thanks for watching
