Abigail is a new horror Thriller and comedy vampire film written by Steven Shields and Guy Buck directed by Matt bettinelli Alin and Tyler gillet AKA radio silence who are behind other films such as ready or not scream as in Scream 5 and just last year Scream 6 the film is about a group of criminals who kidnap the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure they Retreat to an isolated Mansion unaware that they're locked inside with no normal little girl I found Abigail to be a fun watch there is a lot I liked about this film but I didn't love it as much as others have what I think carries the film is the great cast and their amazing performances everyone showed a lot of effort and I could tell that they were all having a lot of fun participating in this film The standouts for me would be Melissa Barrera who was also in the two recent scream films and Dan Stevens they both nailed it as their characters other cast members are William catlet Katherine Newton Kevin Durand Jin Carlo Esposito and Angus cloud from Euphoria who sadly passed away last year by the way there is an in memory of Angus Cloud at the end of the film before the closing credits role of the actor's autograph within a cloud which I thought was an emotional and lovely tribute the characters of the group are the typical brains and Bones lot at first pretending to be nobodies but are all really somebodies with big revealing backgrounds later on in the film I found them all to be a mixture of intentionally likable and dislikable individuals a variety of self-aware and over-the-top personas but never at the level of being a cartoon character like how I felt in ready or not they all have fine chemistry as well but I very much liked the chemistry between Melissa barrera's character and Abigail it has this occasional parent and daughter connection I thought it was touching and relevant when it comes to the character struggles to loneliness of course I cannot forget to mention Alicia Weir as Abigail who I thought was amazing we shows a lot of effort in her unsetting performance from a lot of physicality particularly the ballet scenes for the music and horror scenes that gives Abigail a lot of personality when it comes to the subgenre of vampire horror I thought the film did a good choice of not going into too much detail about the recognizable strengths and weaknesses of vampires because let's be honest by this point now we pretty much know the basics and with this film it's pretty brief and subtle when the group tries problem solving of how to fight against Abigail what I thought was interesting though and different was how manipulation was used and it is already a familiar Trope of vampire horror but in this film I liked it when someone gets bitten by Abigail and eventually they do turn then Abigail herself gets to control them both physically and emotionally some viewers may not agree with me with his creative choice but I found it to be different and self-aware unless there is another vampire film that does this Trope please let me know in the comments what I found scary the most on a level of horror was the excellent production sets with so much detail that it looks and feels to be creepy and obviously Gothic in addition I liked how characters come across unexpected hidden rooms and objects that helps to develop the story plus the impressive makeup from Abigail herself and other vampires eyes and teeth also the amount of blood now when I went in I was expecting a lot of it because it's radio silence they really really do like this style and mostly from blood explosions as well oh boy there is a lot in this film and it's very entertaining to watch the film has decent Pac in and kills it also does a decent job on genres and tones from an action Heist murder mystery and eventually a vampire horror comedy speaking of the comedy now I'm about to get into my negatives I thought some of it was fine I did actually chuckle a couple times from Dan Steven sarcasm but some of it was trying way too hard for example someone draws a penis on someone else's head while they're asleep wow funny stuff I've never seen that before another example would be oh no the gate behind the door is locked I can't open it I don't believe it right as a setup I'm going to run towards that gate and try and open it then as a payoff I'm then going to realize oh yeah it's locked it cannot be opened wow comedy genius I was not expecting that look I saw this on a Monday afternoon not many people at the cinema as expected but there was one guy behind me who was laughing his ass off a lot so good for him my biggest issue with Abigail was the second half of the story I thought the first half was pretty strong and I was hooked to just seeing the group trying to fight against Abigail while she was hunting them down but with the second half without spoiling I wasn't really a fan of a couple of directions the script went for when it comes to a decision and then flipping over the main threat of the story look some may not agree with me with this but I felt that it lost the concentration of experiencing the expected from the concept and instead it felt to be still a very gory but safe and undeserving Direction but still I thought Abigail was a decent watch great cast strong technical elements and a story that has an enjoyable setup but a letdown execution feel free to check this one out now in UK Cinemas I'm going to give Abigail three stars out of five thank you so much for watching I hope you've enjoyed this video and please let me know your thoughts about the film in the comments below I appreciate the like subscribe and support as always until next time
