uh well tonight we are going to be observing the lord's supper which we have not done yet this year i don't believe i think this is the first time well did we do it before covet 19 i think we did so good we this isn't the first time but it's been long overdue uh due to the covet 19 and the social distancing and all that sort of thing we have not been able to gather together and and and do this so we're looking forward to that as part of the service tonight and also on that note i'll be saying more about this this is our covid friendly version of the uh the elements here and so hopefully we can open that up without spilling it all over kids may need help you know i can just see it now you can tear this thing in and we'll baptize the auditorium and communion juice hopefully not but we'll give more instructions about that later lots of things we're learning this year all right so that'll be part of the service in a little bit then after the service uh we're excited to have matt and phoebe martel join with us they're here tonight and looking forward to that they came through our starting point class and as well as tony did and uh the modines they're all part of the same class uh and so we're looking forward to them joining and if there's others who are wondering how do you get involved in our baptist church or what is church membership or how do i serve any of those kinds of questions we'd love to sign you up for the next starting point class and there's no obligation as far as you don't have to join when you go through the class but it's a great orientation to what our church is about what does it mean to be a baptist what does it mean to be a church member and just get your questions answered and if god leads you to join with us then we would rejoice and if the lord does not see fit to do so will we rejoice in his will wherever that is so if you have questions about that let me know but we will be having another starting point class starting soon and we'll get those dates to you uh very very shortly all right then the life group leaders will meet with me just very briefly in my office right after the service tonight as we just get ready for the next the next series a small group life group series this last one was was a blessing on one another and all the different aspects there of our relationships and i trust that this next one will be as well so life group leaders can meet me if you have a couple of moments and then this friday october 2nd is the baby shower for connie berghardt glad that we can do this and glad for god's blessing on the that five o'clock will be the hayride six o'clock is the service we had said we're going to need to limit the uh group originally for the hayride but the the mandate order changed praise the lord and now we can have more people in one place uh so it looks like uh come one come all for the hayride we should be okay on the uh on the limit there so hay rides for anybody who wants to come on that at five then there will be coffee and not coffee cider and donuts and a campfire service at six so we'll look forward to that this coming sunday teen church will be next wednesday october 7th i know they enjoy that appreciate pastor cj and the good work there and what god's doing in our teens so teams making out of that and then let's continue to be praying for these uh regular requests but start starting off here with rex and mary cobb these are our missionaries of the month they are our baptist bible translators in texas at the ba the baptist bible translators institute i have a great ministry they're preparing missionaries for the mission field be praying for them and we'll hear an update from them uh later then uh uh we have a couple of requests that came in via email john and gene modine wrote they're thankful the lord's direction and the decisions they've uh had to make as far as health uh john will be having radiation treatment for a few weeks in october and uh we just need to be praying for him as he goes through those treatments that god would have his hand upon him and give healing there and then from dorothy bank i asked prayer for gene who is here tonight and going to be having outpatient surgery on friday morning to repair some damage behind the cornea had laser procedure done monday afternoon in preparation for the surgery so we need to pray that this will go well and then he has several um after-surgery procedures that he has to follow for the next three months i think you have to have your head down is that what it is or you can't have your head up or have to have a head up that's what okay so if he's walking around with his nose in the air you know give him give him a break sorry no i had a boss who had that surgery and he he had to have his head down and he had to have his head down for like uh three months and so he had special equipment with a special mirror so he could walk around and see and uh i don't know how you do that so we'll be praying for you brother uh that you'll be able to uh do what you need to do there to get a good recovery on that surgery all right and then keep praying for gary koski amy sent out an update uh gary has been home for six days now is doing fine he went outside and took a small walk yesterday in the in the morning and a longer walk at night with abby he's still having problems with sleeping and with headaches his eye is not better yet he can only use one eye he does have a appointment at the kellogg eye center on october 12th and we're hoping that they can know what to do with the eye and how to make that progress there he's not going to back to work anytime soon recovery is a long journey he has a ct scan but not until november 5th then he'll see his head doctor on november 9th this is the doctor that will be able to tell us when gary come back to work so let's be praying for him as he's still in this journey but wow praise the lord for the answers to prayer so far with brother gary just being able to be home and going for a walk and so forth is just a great victory and answer to prayer keep praying for amy and gary and the family keep praying for carol shepherd with her ongoing needs and and she's getting closer to her surgery that procedure they have to do uh pray for ruth riley with her ongoing health needs there and the treatments and for patience and strength for her let's say praying for hunter haskell as uh he's not out of the woods by any means and needs our prayer as that we need to see some some answers they need to see some answers on what to do next with hunter uh so let's pray about that and then for cindy wicked as she's recovering from knee surgery uh and marie place and so many others who can't be with us we need to keep upholding them in in our prayer all right well let's take a moment now for prayer before we sing our next song lord we thank you that we can be here tonight thank you for your goodness and mercy in our lives or thank you for safety for my family and i as we traveled and the good visit you gave us down south with my parents and we pray god that you would just have your hand upon that ministry thank you for what you're doing down there in south carolina although we thank you for our church here we pray that you would bless our missionaries the cobs and the institute there in texas would they be able to prepare many missionaries for vibrant effective efficient service in their respective fields and lord we pray for for the modines with the radiation treatments upcoming you give strength to john as that can be exhausting and would you give healing and grant lord just your mercy in the whole situation that you be glorified and work through it although we pray for the gene beck that you would bless with this eye surgery lord i pray that you would just give him grace with the recovery as uh that there will be some challenges there we pray that this will go well for him lord we thank you for the answers to prayer with gary koski we pray that you continue to strengthen him help his eye to be able to make a full recovery as well and we just pray that you'd continue to use this in the koski family and give give continued healing and strength and and your grace to all involved there lord we pray for carol shepard as she's gearing up for a surgery here soon very important and we pray that you give her peace and the strength that she needs to be able to go through that and and and and see a full recovery lord help ruth thank you for her patience and her her health journey give her strength lord and uh continue to use this trial in her life and the lives that she's touching lord we pray for the haskell family we pray that you'd give tim and julia wisdom and peace as uh it's just so tough when you have plans and then things change your plans and and there's questions and you don't know all the answers it can just be so so difficult uh what we pray for peace for tim and julia and your direction and guidance and we pray for healing and wisdom there with hunter and that you'd have your hand upon that little guy lord i help cindy wicked as she's recovering from her surgery give her the strength that she needs and we thank you lord for the blessing that she's been to our church or have we had about marie place give her strength uh give her peace and and bless her son lyle and uh those that she's so burdened for uh lord would you continue to use marie she's been such a blessing or we pray for our country we pray that you would just send revival to our country lord none of us i i don't think any of us here are looking to the election uh to be the savior of our country uh lord we are looking to you to to help us to turn us back to you but lord the election is important and we pray that your will would be done and that you would be merciful to our nation as you have been so many times lord we pray that you'd be merciful yet again and that you would just continue to help us to be good stewards of the freedoms that we have and the country that you've given to us lord i pray that you would unify us around your word and may we just be valiantly prayerful in these days for our country and and for all that is uh that is going on in the unseen realm lord we see what we can see we don't see the spiritual battle and we pray that you would continue to keep this this country open for the gospel and that you would protect our freedoms lord and help us not to take those freedoms and squander them may we be faithful and filled with faith lord in these days thank you lord for what you're doing we pray this in jesus name amen going on in 2020 sometimes it feels like you just can't get away from it huh but praise the lord we have a hiding place in our savior let's stand together and we'll sing hiding in thee let's take advantage of that space in christ and hide in him [Music] indeed [Music] is [Music] is [Applause] is is i'm [Music] oh my [Music] me amen we are hiding in him well we're gonna go to the book of proverbs again and as this is the lord's supper uh night i wanted to have the uh our focus be not just from proverbs but but segway into the lord's supper and so as we look at proverbs we'll be specifically looking at the matter of remembering our savior through the book of proverbs now this is uh not the book of psalms all right if it was psalms you've got all kinds of of direct passages about the crucifixion the messiah prophetic passages the book of psalms as a great help as as you've got isaiah and psalms and and so many different uh passages of scripture that help us flesh out the crucifixion story and so forth um and you might ask is the crucifixion of christ mentioned in the book of proverbs well directly no it's not are parts of the passion weak mentioned in the book of proverbs well no not directly and not really indirectly either is christ mentioned in the book of proverbs well again if we were dealing with the book of psalms the answer would be yes yes and yes but this is this is not the book of psalms the book of proverbs however there is that which will help us here i believe uh most people say oh christ is mentioned in the book of proverbs in uh proverbs 18 22 where it says a man that hath friends must show himself friendly and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother and uh that is oftentimes taken as a an illusion to christ well uh technically it's not it's not a direct uh or indirect illusion to christ certainly that's a truism about christ that he sticks closer than a brother but that's not that's not a prophecy about christ or anything that is a proverb it is it is uh talking that technically there are people who stick closer some friends are closer to you than a brother christ would be one of those uh so where can we go to the book of proverbs to learn about christ all right well there is nothing specifically stated about redemption in proverbs nothing specifically about the cross nothing specifically given about the sacrificial sacrificial ritual of the mosaic law nothing about god's covenant with his people uh this is a book of wisdom literature and it concerns practical life the practical practice of life but there is much that points us to christ and when we get into proverbs 8 and 9 which we are poised and ready to do uh you'll see some of that that definitely is picturesque of of christ but we're not there yet tonight we're going to jump around in several passages here in the book of proverbs and one of the principle themes that you see in proverbs is this that there is a contrast between the way of the fool and the way of the wise they say how does that tie in to christ and proverbs well uh some verses i want to think about here that you may have read many times in the book of proverbs and never thought about the lord jesus and if you didn't i wouldn't blame you because i can't say when i read these verses i think about the lord jesus but tonight i think we'll be able to see a tie all right proverbs 10 verse 13 in the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding now just hang with me we'll tie this together so in the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found but a rod is for the back of him that hat is void of understanding verse 10 of chapter 17 says a reproof entereth more into a wise man than a hundred stripes into a fool think about these proverbs 19 25 says smite a scorner and the simple will beware and it goes on i know what you're thinking now wait a minute i thought we were supposed to see christ in this well keep looking i think you can proverbs 19 29. judgments are prepared for scorners and stripes for the back of fools proverbs 22 15 foolishness is bound in the heart of a child but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him and one more here and we could have done more but we'll stop with this one proverbs 26 and verse 3 a whip for the horse a bridle for the ass and a rod for the fool's back now i hopefully you see where i'm going here when you look at these verses about the fool getting beat okay the fool getting into a mess of trouble and getting the stripes across his back of course that's a pretty harsh punishment uh and we think about our folly we think about our lives we think about the sins that we've committed and the consequences that we reaped as a result of those sins and none of it's been fun and we think boy was i was i dumb to get involved in that and look at the mess i got and look at the consequences and the stripes if you will though they not may not have been physical stripes across the back uh many of us have experienced those stripes of sorts of the chastisement of god for whom the lord loveth he chasteneth and so forth and you see here in these verses that it is clear in the proverbs and again there was more that i could have put in i just put a few in here but there is a correlation between a fool and his folly and stripes or judgment now what does this have to do with christ and how do we see christ in this well isaiah 53 and verse 3 helps us and through the rest of the passage isaiah said he is despised and rejected of men a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief and we hid as it were our faces from him he was despised and we esteemed him not surely he hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows yet we did esteem him stricken smitten of god and afflicted but he was wounded for our transgressions he was bruised for our iniquities the chastisement of our peace was upon him and with his stripes we are healed all we like sheep have gone astray we have turned everyone to his own way and the lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all he was oppressed and he was afflicted yet he opened not his mouth he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb so he opened openeth not his mouth he was taken from prison and from judgment and who shall declare his generation for he was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people was he stricken and he made his grave with the wicked and with the rich in his death because he had done no violence neither was there any deceit in his mouth yet it pleased the lord to bruise him he hath put him to grief when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin he shall see his seed he shall prolong his days and the pleasure of the lord shall prosper in his hand he shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many for he shall bear their iniquities therefore will i divide him a portion with the great and he shall divide the spoil with the strong because he hath poured out his soul unto death and he was numbered with the transgressors and he bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors does the proverbs teach us directly of christ no there's no prophecy of christ there's no mention of the messiah but as we see we will see some glimpses of him in proverbs 8 and 9 as we talk about wisdom that's not the only chapters that you can go to to see glimpses of of christ you can go to some of the passages that are wins worthy these ones that are already read to us about the rod about the stripes about the folly about smiting a scorner about the judgment for scorners and stripes for the back of the fools and you say now wait a minute you're tying that in with what the lord did and i'll be honest with you when i was first approaching this passage i was like i can't make this correlation this just it sounds blasphemous it just sounds wrong to see christ in proverbs 10 13 and proverbs 17 10 in proverbs 19 25 in proverbs 19 29 22 15 and 26 3 a whip for the horse a bridle for the ass and a rod for the fool's back that's what christ became according to isaiah 53 he became sin for us who knew no sin how many times in chapter 53 did we see it was our transgressions he was numbered with the transgressors all of this he was bruised for our iniquities the theme all the way through chapter 53 of isaiah is he bore unbearable punishment that was not his to bear it was ours he became a murderer for the murderers if you will and that he took the murderer's punishment not that he became a murderer but i think you know what i'm saying he became that sin he became guilty he took our guilt he stood before god in the place of the murderer and in that sense he became the murderer and it was laid on him he became the liar he became dare i say it it sounds horrible the fool that was whipped in proverbs 26 3. he became the folly he took all of the stripes what did the proverbs show us of christ will they show us our awful sin and the folly which he bore on account of that sin when we look at proverbs and we look at the fool we're tempted to try to distance ourselves from that no that's not me no friend you and i we all qualify and have qualified as sinners we have tasted our share of folly we have been the proverbs fool more than we would like to admit and to think that jesus received my stripes the whip of proverbs 26 3 the bridle and the rod for the fool's back he took it uh the the rod of correction that drives foolishness far from me he took all of that uh smite uh the the smiting of proverbs 19 25 he was smitten the judgment that was prepared for scorners and stripes for the back of the fools he took that our awful sin and our folly was laid on him the stripes he bore from a rod meant for us it's very clear god can't sin he knew no sin the bible says it here in isaiah 53 he made his grave with the wicked and with the rich in his death because he had done no violence neither was any deceit in his mouth yet it pleased the lord to bruise him why did it please the lord to bruise him when there was nothing wrong no violence no deceit done in his mouth because we were fools we were sinners and the stripes needed to be administered our awful sin and our folly he bore our stripes he bore from the rod that was meant for us and i see also romans 5 8 what god commendeth has loved toward us and that while we were yet sinners the proverbs word for sinner is fools while we were yet fools why we got sinners christ died for us oh what love that passage talks about how for scarcely for a just man some might some might die i mean we we may you do hear about people who die for noble causes praise god for our military and our first responders and so many people who have gone out there and given their lives dying in noble causes jesus died for sinners he died for folly he died for scorners he died for those who have wallowed in folly and deserved that beating on the back from the rod and the stripes it's hard to even see it as a noble cause unless you're god and you created every one of these in your own image and you're you're in the business of reconciling them to yourself and you have such a love as to pour it out through the giving of your own son therefore i will divide a portion with the great and he shall divide the spoil with the strong because he hath poured out his soul unto death he was numbered with the transgressors and he bear the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors our awful sin and folly our the rod that we deserved the stripes that we should have born he took out of a demonstration of his love he identified with our sin and the consequences of it and tonight this is this is what we'll remember this is why we're here tonight to observe the lord's supper to remember his love for us and to see our sin for what it is we need to see our sin as the shameful folly that deserves stripes as proverbs so teaches us and we should be humbled by the demonstration of jesus christ to take those stripes for us well we do this tonight in remembrance of him as as the proverbs even the proverbs can be of help as we remember what christ has done for us i i would ask are you are you living for folly christ died for it are you pursuing the way of the wise or are you pursuing the way of fools are you humbled by christ's love for you oh he is so good we're going to take the next few minutes here to uh look at the familiar passage in first corinthians 11 and starting in verse 23. jesus instituted this lord's supper with his disciples as he gathered those who are closest to him in the upper room this is one of the last things that he did with his disciples before he was crucified and buried and rose again and he wanted to make sure that in the busyness of life his disciples would not forget him god made us god knows all he knows our weakness and he knows our propensities and he knows we are apt to forget we sing a song prone to wander how i feel it prone to leave the god i love here's my heart lord take and seal it seal it for thy quartz above we need help staying on course and we need to be reminded over and over and over daily of what jesus has done for us as we remember the lord and we will observe the lord's table here in a moment this is not a time of receiving grace it's a time of remembering the grace that we've already received because he did come he did die he was buried and he rose again he conquered sin death and hell and when you received him by grace through faith i trust each one of you there's been a day in your life where you recognize i'm a sinner i deserve the judgment of god that place of eternal torment called hell i need jesus he died for me he took my punishment he took my folly he took my stripes he took the smiting that i deserved for my folly i trust that there's been a time in your life where you received him as lord and savior by faith and if you have then this is a privilege that we have and a responsibility as we have as christians to come together and solemnly and soberly remember what he did for us and to praise him and to teach our children that this is this is the most important thing in our life is to know jesus first corinthians 11 verse 23 says for i have received the lord that which also i delivered unto you that the lord jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks he break it and said take eat this is my body which is broken for you this do in remembrance of me after the same manner also he took the cup when he had stopped saying this cup is the new testament in my blood this dew as oft as ye drink it in remembrance of me for as often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup you do show the lord's death till he come wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the lord unworthily shall be guilty of the body and blood of the lord but let a man examine himself and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup for he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinketh damnation to himself not discerning the lord's body for this cause many for this cause many are weak and sickly among you and many sleep for if we would judge ourselves we should not be judged but when we are judged we are chastened to the lord that we should not be condemned with the world wherefore my brethren when ye come together tarry one for another and if any man hunger let him eat at home that ye come not together unto condemnation and the rest will i set an order when i come paul lays out here that this is not a baptist buffet we have those two those are for fellowship and those are good this isn't a get together this was not a time where you know the the rich people had the best food and the poor people had the crumbs now this was a time where everybody got the same thing the unleavened bread and the juice the juice being a picture of his blood that was shed and the bread being a picture of his body that was broken and this is to be done in remembrance of him again this was not a means of grace so therefore we don't call it a sacrament a sacrament means sacrifice there's no sacrifice taking place tonight the sacrifice took place all those years ago he said it is finished and how dare we say it's not finished and try to do it again no there's no sacrifice going on tonight we are remembering a sacrifice that took place a job that was done he said it is finished and we celebrate the finished work here tonight that we know that we have a home in heaven based on the shed blood of jesus christ his death burial and resurrection i would invite you if you have been saved and uh scripturally baptized if you're a member of this church or another church of like faith and practice i recognize some maybe between churches but uh you've been attending here uh that's fine uh but if you're if you're saved and baptized uh and and and and right standing with the lord we invite you to partake tonight uh there is that verse that i'll just remind us of again where it says wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the lord unworthily shall be guilty of the body and blood of the lord but let a man examine himself and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup so it gives us a caution that we should not eat unworthily but then it says don't say oh i'm unworthy i'll just walk away it says no fix the problem get right with the lord deal with the sin confess and forsake and have mercy and and the bible says that we can walk in the light if you've stepped out of the light into darkness you can step back in and so tonight what we will do is we will have one of our deacons will stand and lead in prayer and then after he has prayed uh we will have i'll have the piano play silently and normally the men pass out uh uh the jews and the cracker and so forth uh but they won't be doing that tonight but i still want us to have a time of quiet prayer and so we'll have the panel play silently and we'll have a time of personal fellowship with the lord and that's a time where you can ask the lord to search your heart and say lord search me o god and try me and see if there be any wicked way in me now we don't search ourselves we ask the lord to search us that's important the holy spirit is not a condemner uh he the the the the devil is the accuser of the brethren the holy spirit will bring to light those things that need to be dealt with but we're not going on a witch hunt that can easily happen in a time like this where we get all introspective and oh am i in sin is there something unworthy am i going to be in trouble with god no you just pray and you say lord search me and you allow god to bring to light those things that need to be dealt with and you deal with those things as he brings them to light and after we've taken some time to pray then i will uh i will read another verse and we will receive the bread or the juice as it is appropriate and and then uh i'll pray again but i trust this this will be a time where we it's meaningful and and kids i hope it's meaningful to you as well i remember being a little kid and to be involved in lord supper and at first you don't really know what's going on but you catch more and more and more and it's important for you to have that relationship now as far as the practical when we open this up there is a first layer that will remove the wafer and then a second layer that will open for the juice i recommend kids be careful don't open the juice any earlier than you have to the longer that things open the more chance of spill there is it also is good if you don't rip the whole tab off leave it leave it connected so that we don't have tabs all over the place all right just leave it connected and if we can we'll be able to put that back and it'll be collected after the service
