A Visit with Jim Gates: Legendary Nevada County Cattle Rancher

come on yeah where's your where's the hey well there ain't any yet but there will be [Laughter] if I had a bale of hay they did claim Ritenour pocket [Music] there's people came across the plains 1871 and you go up here to grouse Ridge and there's looney meadows and alderman meadows and all them places up there are named for my people we've been we've been running cows since the day we got here and this is what I choose to do and it's I'm I'm as free as I'm going to get out here you know I'm my own boss I get up yeah I saved my own boss the cows were my reactron bosses but you know 16-hour days but you know it's what I choose to do you know [Music] in this country we've got a weak have in the fall time and there's real good reasons for that first off we live in Mediterranean climate here it usually starts raining sometime in the fall but the only time there's a surplus of grass is in the spring so the babies have got to be big enough to eat the grass when it's here most cows are bred for their cattle to go in the feedlot and they won't work at all out here [Music] without sounding arrogant I'm gonna stand here and tell you that if I live long enough okay you're going to be going be able to go up there to person II knees and this is Nevada County red dirt right here okay and we're going to be able to go up there to person easy to see South Dakota black dirt because it'll put that much carbon back in the ground yeah [Music] the next thing and I want to do is I want a mobile bat house out here and a bat house is gonna just go with the cattle and at night the cows eventually learn to get close to the bat house because the cows wishes our tail and all those flies go up in the air but a certain amount of them never come back down and I mean you look at this red cow right here I don't know 300 flies on her right there we let the bats take care of them [Music] oh yes yes yes [Music]
