lives my family's in remembering and and getting over the loss of towns wow this is beautiful [Music] my days they are the highway kind they only come to leave but to leave in I don't mind it's a coming that I crave for the Sun upon the ground stand the throne with shadow watch it grow into a night fill a spinning sky [Music] time among the pine-trees felt like breath of air usually I just why you were not there [Music] cheerful little did you know it's a nice little ditty the definite dark side any great yeah ladies and gentlemen my new friend and my idol Willie Nelson well the first the first time I heard the song Pancho and Lefty we were doing a session and Merle Haggard and I out here on the hill and we've done a lot of good songs we really hadn't found the one that we thought was really the one we were looking forward to do the title song the album you know hemorrhoid got sleepy so Marilla went to bed and we kept looking for songs and my daughter Lana I played your copy of Pancho and Lefty in fact she went home and got it and brought it back and I listened to it I said no this is what me and we're all out of date so I went over to the condo who knocked on the door 4:00 in the morning woke up Merle and said let's go do this song he said what song I said Paul JR left he said Pancho and whoo and I'm dragging him out of bed and we go over there and he does it in his sleep but I thought he did pretty good so anyway that's the story on how we were lucky enough to find Pancho Atlantic I'm glad you did and tonight I get to be Merle [Music] with it on the road my friend he's gonna keep you free and clean bear you wear your skin like are your breath his heart as kerosene burnt your mama's only boy but her favorite one it seems she began to cry and when you said goodbye psyche into your dreams Pancho was a bandit boys sports was fast his polish to you war is gone outside his prints we're all game honest world to field honcho met his match you know deserts down in Mexico nobody heard his diet that's who [Music] all the federales say could I have anything we only let him slip away [Music] kindness I asked lefty he can't sing the blues all night long like he used to a dusted poncho bit down south indeed I've been left his mouth the day they lay poor poncho love lefty split for Ohio where he got the bread to go hard ain't nobody knows and all the federales said they could I had him in a day they only let him slip away at a kindness awesome [Music] oh it's still about your fellow lefties living in a cheap hotel the desert squad Cleveland's cool and so the story in dirt oh did you say a few he only did what he had to do and now he's cruel [Music] [Applause] [Music] anything let him slip away I require a simple [Music] so long I reckon the sizable [Music] there's so much I guess to say about towns I first saw him in New York City it was probably about 1968 I'd gone up there to be a folk singer so I met him and got to see him him play a show at Gerdes folk city and I really never seen anyone like that before I thought he was the ghost of Hank Williams with a with a twist you know and and I became a huge fan of his and followed just about everything that he did and I did record a couple of town songs at Pancho and Lefty and and then this next song that I've asked mr. Earle to do with me I do want to say also one thing I I got to know Townes more through my friendship with guy and his wife Susanna who's sitting down here at the front table one of my favorite towns lines was he said there were two kinds of music there was the blues and there was ippity doo-dah and even when he did a slightly upbeat happy song there was still the blues in it and I guess that's what I I loved about his songs because they always spoke the truth kick it off there [Music] if I need you would you come to me would you please my if you need I would swim c4 to meet you will the nightfall in the mine with lies [Music] and new sunrise if you [Music] if I needed you would you burn me would you come if you need me I would I would swim the seas only you think [Music] ladies with me now since I showed her how to lay her Lily hand in mine lube and lil agree she's a sight to see and a treasure for the poor to find if I needed you would you come to me would you come to me and ease my pain if you needed me I would come to you I'd swim the Seas for to ease your pain [Music] [Laughter] [Music] mr. Rodney Crowell thank you thank you I first met towns I think it's 1972 and guy had a Volkswagen minibus / truck double cab Volkswagen pickup yes and so I meant a towns had these white patent leather square-toed Beatle boots that he was so proud of and first thing he did is he took me to the cleaners pitching quarters after he got about $10 off I'm he says I got a new song and the story I got is that Susanna and towns towns was driving guys truck home and guy was asleep I think elsewise he would write this song but Susanna and towns wrote this song [Music] I'm in the houseboat in heaven to sail them beeping holy sea I am building the houseboat in him and it's welcome aboard you sweet sweet pea ah the bath she is made of solid silver and uh she is made of solid gold well she's not too much floatie but Jesus babe the head and two though [Music] so I'm bill to save Limpy bamboo Lizzy I [Music] and it's welcome aboard - sweet sweet pea [Music] [Music] so I know it's mine - whatever much like home so I'm headed to the solution in my Ruby study to hear some man in him to save me who is he I [Music] and it's welcome overdue sweet sweet [Music] [Music] [Applause] and that silly so I get to introduce you to Lyle Lovett when asked about the song in an interview town said the song should be screamed not some Steve Earle's gonna have [Music] it's called lungs [Music] launching in your lungs to my narcolepsy let my feeding better he breathes up the time it's passing breath I've taken breath I get brave the day as my boys stand mine ones who live in decision [Music] ha fingers walk doctors down - on midnight gather up the cold you family fool it's on moonlight if you stop to take it home your hands are turn to butter you better leave this dream won't try to find another salvation sad and cross yourself hold the devil will stand burned up on the Shelf kill the region cancer to see the river and its mouth take the waters prisoner fill the skies screams and crass bathing fiery answers [Music] how Jesus was known son levers on the concept strangers cried for interns and dirty of the doorstep and I for one in you for two ain't got the time for outside I keep your injured looks to you will tell the world we try [Music] one one of the most innovative and influential performers and producers in the history of country music music produced great artists from Louis Armstrong to Townes Van Zandt Jack cowboy Clinton thank you live good guy and Steve and Peter to help me on this this was always one of my favorite songs of Tanja's I produced his first album and this was on it like this was a title song for the sake of the song well I kind of over produced it a little bit I have been known to over produce a few things here we go [Music] oh I does she sing her sad songs to me I'm not the one to tenderly bring her soft sympathy I've just begun to see my way clear and it's plain I stop I will fall I can lay down a tear for a pain just a tear and that song but what does she want me to do she says that she knows that moment sir and I suppose is true then on she goes to say I don't care and she knows that I do or maybe she just has to sing for the sake of the song and who do I think that I am to decide that she's wrong [Music] she liked to think I was cruel but she knows that's alive or I would be no more than a two mile out her to crawl over me my sorrow is real even though I can't change my plan [Music] she could see how I feel and I know that she'd understand [Music] but it's only to herself that she's life she'd like to pretend there's something that she should defend with her bride but I won't stand stand here and be the friend from she must hide [Music] maybe she just has the same for the sake of the song and who do I think that I and to decide that she's wrong [Music] Newtown for about 35 years I guess and this is one of the first songs I think I ever heard him sing and and maybe the first song he ever wrote or at least one of them this is absolutely seamless if you're a writer this is what you won't be copying how would you take it too bad [Music] if you feeling I'm feeling if you feel an unloving if you feeling alone don't you take is too bad it ain't you to blame babe lot is something kind of came me out of all of this living that we got left to do [Music] oh and if you go searching for ammo for reason well you won't have the time [Applause] and it takes just for talking about the places you've been babe about the faces you've seen be on house off the time flies past your window at night and we just can't have that girl cuz it's a sad lonesome cold world and a man needs a warm and by his side and whisper sweet words his ears birthday dream roses and plaything and a sweetness of springtime and the sound of the rain [Music] well Steve Earl is going to lead us a little rousing closer yeah one of towns is strong suits you guys have been wonderful thanks for helping us do this [Music] we just stop we just want to uh we just want to leave you with one thought towns was known to take a drink once in a while and you know but if if he if he was around somebody who he thought was drinking too much this is what he had to say what was it oh well when he was talking to a friend that decided to had quit drinking and so the friend this mutual friend of ours I was trying to decide in front of towns whether to start drinking again or not pounds was trying to talk him out of drinking again and so he got a very serious look on his face and said well if nothing else you'll have cleaner heartaches [Laughter] [Music] I'm gonna listen [Music] you may check away Bello people they treat you if you make a claim bellow people there were treat you all the dead white bread [Music] well it's bad news from Houston have my friends well it's bad news from Houston have my friends of that why don't you steal away [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] if you see Carolina's tears [Music] if you see Carol to [Music] stealing [Music] thank you questions or comments visit us at PBS online at pbs.org gee thanks Jack Clemons I love it Rodney Crowell any new hair it's Willie Nelson Jake Tim Van Damme man it's a quick he steamed Erlang Peter lon maybe Raphael and interpret our where Lord I'm gonna ramble til I get back to where I came real Lord I'm gonna ramble til I get back to where I know white freight liner is gonna haul wait my going out on highway this engineer big trucks whine whine I'm going on a highway I said Kitty a big white freight liner won't you steal away my big white freight liner won't you steal away [Music] [Applause]
