[Music] hello and welcome to another piano peak lesson so today I'm going to show you a really nice chord progression which you can use to help learn how to improvise the reason it's so good for this is because it stays within the same key but it also has enough variation to stay interesting so I'll start by showing you the chords and then we'll go over some things you can use to begin improvising with so here they are [Music] so you can hear that it has a really nice sound and it's actually very easy to play so it's just a four chord progression and the first chord is an E minor seven which we play like this the second chord is a d9 and all we have to do to get that is move the bottom note from our a minor seven down by one half step our next chord is an F major seven and to get this we do exactly the same thing we just did we move the bottom note down by one half-step so first three chords just go like this and finally for our last court we need to move all of the notes down to the white notes below and this gives us an E minor 7 so altogether we should have this [Music] so practice that until you can play it fairly comfortably and also if you want a slightly more advanced variation another option would be to play the last chord like this instead this is actually called an E altered and you can just put this in every now and again or maybe alternate between the two but if you don't want to do that that's completely fine so once you've got those chords under your fingers you're free to start improvising over the top a good starting point would be to use the a minor blues scale if you're not sure where this scale comes from then go and check out my lesson on the blues scale you can get some nice sounding things just using the scale alone so here's a quick example to give you some ideas [Music] if you want to make it slightly more advanced you could use the a Dorian scale [Music] another quick example using this [Music] you can really go as basic or advanced as you want with this progression that's what makes it so great so just play around and see what you can come up with one last thing you might want to check out is a backing track I made just to go this video it consists of just drums and bass with no piano playing this exact chord progression so you'll have room to play your chords and practice improvising I'll give you a preview so you can hear it and also to give you some ideas for your own improvisation so here it is [Music] [Applause] [Music] so definitely go and check out that backing track I'll put the link in the description below and I hope you found this lesson useful if you did give it a thumbs up and subscribe for more if you have any questions just leave them in the comment box below and I'll see you in another video
