I live in a small town in the middle of the Midwest when I say small I mean small I don't think our population has ever broken a thousand it's a quaint and peaceful little town that's basically the reason I chose to live here that and the fact that I was born and raised here my father works at our local post office which is basically just a kiosk in a parking lot my mother was a stay-at-home mom but hey that's a job too especially considering how awful I was as a child I on the other hand once I was almost finished with high school worked as a bagger at her only supermarket the pay wasn't all that great but the work was easy and after a few months I worked my way up the chain to cashier and eventually became one of the store managers as soon as I graduated high school our town in its desperate desire to expand and attract new residents constructed a brand-new apartment structure which I was super thrilled about I was finally able to move out on my own don't get me wrong my parents are great but you got to know when to leave the nest since the apartment complex was trying to acquire new tenants the rent was relatively cheap so I jumped at the chance I moved into my small one-bedroom apartment as soon as I could a year or so past and I finished up another routine shift at the market I had just left the store late in the evening and was walking across the dark parking lot to my car when I first noticed it the fog it was faint in most areas and was only truly noticeable when you looked down a stretch of road I thought nothing of it because who would everyone has seen fog before I made it home not long after 8:00 a TV dinner and unceremoniously fell asleep on my couch I woke early in the morning to my phone vibrating on my coffee table thinking I was late for work I jumped up in a panic and grabbed my phone I looked down and saw that my boss was calling me he told me that the store was going to be closed today and when I asked him why he told me to look out the window I laughed thinking there would be five feet of snow outside but when I drew my blinds I saw it well I should say didn't see it I didn't see anything there was a massive layer of fog outside my window it was so dense that I couldn't even see the parking lot to my own apartment I stared amazed by what I was seeing like I said before everyone has seen fog but I had never seen fog like this my boss told me that he tried to get to work but almost crashed just trying to leave his house he said it was too risky to try to make the trip to the store so resigned to keeping it closed until the fog lifted I agreed with him partly because he was right driving through this would earn you a one-way ticket to the hospital and partly because I didn't feel like working today the store doesn't get that many customers anyways especially during the middle of the week after I hung up with my boss I called my parents to see how they were doing my mother told me they were just going to stay home and wait out the fog and I told him I would do the same but to give me a call if they needed anything I spent the rest of the day cleaning my apartment and watching TV occasionally I would get up and peek out of my window only to be greeted by an immense wall of white after looking out of the window for the third time I sat back down and turned on the Weather Channel there was zero mention of any heavy fog across the entire network this struck me as odd maybe this fog was just a spontaneous act of nature that even The Weather Channel didn't know about day turned to night and since there wasn't much to do I ended up going to bed early that night however after I turned everything off and was just about to lay down in my bed I heard a knock on my door this startled me as I wasn't expecting any visitors I walked over to my door and looked through the peephole doing so just made me feel silly as I couldn't see anything through this damn fog I considered opening the door but hesitated and instead I called out asking who was there a male voice on the other side of the door responded he said that he was trying to get home but got lost through the fog so he pulled into my complex I asked what he wanted and what he said next made me very nervous he said he wanted me to open the door not that he wanted to use my phone or for me to give him directions no he just wanted me to open my door I told him I didn't feel comfortable opening my door for a stranger and the man stopped speaking a minute or two later whoever it was on the other side began violently hitting my door trying to break it down he began screaming for me to open my door instead i double-checked the deadbolt and took a step back after a few minutes the assault ended and I found myself sitting on my couch keeping a close eye on my door in windows I didn't sleep that night eventually the morning came and I checked in my window once again the fog hadn't dissipated in the slightest I attempted to call my boss an hour before work but was met with a busy signal I figured that since he had told me the store would remain closed until the fog let up that meant no work today either so I showered and ate some breakfast still trying to process what had happened the previous night I tried to call my parents next but again it was no use it seemed that no calls were going through now the day dragged on and for the most part was uneventful then once night started to fall in my town is when I started to hear them the screams it sounded like hundreds of people screaming outside they sounded like people in agony with shrieking their only respite from the pain I tried to look out of my window once again to see if I could spot any of these people walking around but it was useless then suddenly the scream stopped the silence that replaced them was eerie like when the power goes out in your house at night a few hours passed and I spent them sitting nervously on my couch trying desperately to take my mind off the strange occurrences by watching TV even though I was very freaked out having stayed awake all the previous night was beginning to take its toll on me and against my will I fell asleep I was awoken in the middle of the night two loud knocks on my door which happened to be right next to the couch I rested on my I shot open as I stared at my door I didn't want to get up I just laid there wide-eyed the knock sounded a few more times then stopped my plan was to just ignore whoever it was until they went away but then I heard something I didn't expect to hear someone on the other side of the door called out my name it was a man's voice but it sounded different to the one I had heard previously then after a moment the man identified himself he said that he was a police officer that he was just stopping by to check on the tenants I didn't respond he then proceeded to ask if I could open the door and let him in I thought about it for a moment what if he really was a police officer then I thought about the previous encounter the man on the other side of the door grew more aggressive as he began to demand that I open the door or else I'd be in trouble I thought about it but by that point I was too scared to move that's when the banging started the banging rattled my door over and over again I waited in fear that my door would give away at any moment then a few minutes later the banging stopped I quickly got up from my couch and dashed to my bedroom I locked the door behind me and laid in bed keeping an eye on my door hours passed and even though I tried to stay awake my eyelids shut and I woke up a few hours later that morning when I woke up I looked out of my window expecting to see that familiar fog but instead I could see cars in the parking lot and a few buildings across the street the fog had finally lifted the first thing I did was call my parents and I breathed the sigh of relief when they both answered I asked if they were all right and they told me they were fine that they spent the last few days playing dominoes and watching soap operas I asked them if they heard anything weird but they told me they didn't that it was quiet both nights I told them both that I loved them and I would call them later a week has passed since then and everything had seemingly returned to normal in my small town I had asked my co-workers and boss if they experienced anything weird during the fog but they all told me the same thing that apart from the fog it was quiet and uneventful for those couple of days I'm not sure why I was the only one to experience the strange sounds maybe I just hallucinating the whole event or something I don't know but if any of you out there live in a small town and experienced a strange heavy fog stay inside and whatever you do do not open your door no matter who or what might be knocking outside you [Music]
